We fabricate gas-atomized particles by inductively melting electrode rods of HoB2-x (x = -0.3, 0, 0.3, and 1.0) and investigate the effect of non-stoichiometry on the phase fraction, microstructure, and physical properties. Shifting the stoichiometric ratio of the electrode rod to the B (Ho)-rich side increases HoB4 (Ho) phase in the resulting atomized particles. Even if the atomized particles contain 15-20 weight percent (wt.%) of the impurity phase, the influence of which on the physical properties is less severe: the maximum value of the magnetic entropy change is only reduced by 10% compared to HoB2.0 particles. We further find that the ductile Ho phase exists so as to fill the space between the brittle HoB2 phases in the atomized particles, which may be beneficial to the mechanical properties of the particles. Our findings suggest that it would be better to use the Ho-rich electrode rods than the stoichiometric ones to produce HoB2-x particles with more suitable properties as a magnetic refrigerant for magnetic refrigeration systems.

We studied Gr\"uneisen parameter ({\gamma}G) to investigate lattice anharmonicity in a layered BiS2-based superconductor system REO1-xFxBiS2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd), where in-plane chemical pressure was tuned by substituting the RE elements. With increasing in-plane chemical pressure, bulk modulus remarkably increases, and a high {\gamma}G is observed for RE = Nd. The dependence of {\gamma}G on in-plane chemical pressure exhibits a good correlation with Tc, and a higher Tc is achieved when {\gamma}G is large for RE = Nd. In addition, {\gamma}G shows a slight decrease by a decrease of F concentration (x) in REO1-xFxBiS2. Our results show that the anharmonic vibration of Bi along the c-axis is present in REO1-xFxBiS2, and the enhancement of the anharmonicity is positively linked to superconducting Tc and pairing mechanisms., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Processing magnetocaloric materials into magnetic refrigerants with appropriate shapes is essential for the development of magnetic refrigeration systems. In this context, the impact of processing on the physical properties of magnetocaloric materials is one of the important issues. Here, we investigate the crystallographic, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of gas-atomized particles of the intermetallic compound ErCo$_{2}$, a giant magnetocaloric material for low-temperature applications. The results demonstrate that the physical properties of ErCo$_{2}$ are significantly changed by atomization and subsequent thermal annealing. In the as-atomized particles, the magnetic transition temperature increases from 34 to 56 K and the phase transition changes from first order to second order. The thermal annealing shifts the transition temperature back to the original one and restores the first-order phase transition characteristic. The changes in magnetic properties are closely related to those in crystallographic properties, suggesting the importance of the magneto-structural coupling. The magnetic entropy change $-\Delta S_{M}$ of the particles can be tuned in size, shape, and peak temperature depending on the annealing conditions. The peak value of $-\Delta S_{M}$ varies in the range of 9--33 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ for a magnetic field change of 0--5 T. For performing successful measurements within limited experimental time, efficient use of preliminary data plays a crucial role. This work shows that a simple feedforward type neural networks approach for learning preliminary experimental data can provide quick access to simulate the experiment within the learned range. The approach is especially beneficial for physical properties measurements with scanning on multiple axes, where derivative or integration of data are required to obtain the objective quantity. Due to its simplicity, the learning process is fast enough for the users to perform learning and simulation on-the-fly by using a combination of open-source optimization techniques and deep-learning libraries. Here such a tool for augmenting the experimental data is proposed, aiming to help researchers to decide the most suitable experimental conditions before performing costly experiments in real. High-pressure techniques open exploration of functional materials in broad research fields. An established diamond anvil cell with a boron-doped diamond heater and transport measurement terminals has performed the high-pressure synthesis of a cubic Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ superconductor. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ phase is stable in the pressure range of P>5 GPa in a decompression process. Transport measurement terminals in the diamond anvil cell detect a metallic nature and superconductivity in the synthesized Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ with a maximum onset transition temperature of 13.3 K at 5.6 GPa. The observed pressure-T$_{c}$ relationship is consistent with that from the first-principles calculation. The observation of superconductivity in Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ opens further materials exploration under high temperature and pressure conditions.

The processing of promising magnetocaloric materials into spheres is one of the important issues on developing high-performance magnetic refrigeration systems. In the present study, we achieved in producing spherical particles of a giant magnetocaloric compound HoB2 by a crucible-free gas atomization process, despite its high melting point of 2350 C. The particle size distribution ranges from 100 to 710 micrometers centered at 212-355 micrometers with the highest yield of 14-20wt% of total melted electrode, which is suitable for magnetic refrigeration systems. The majority of the resulting particles are mostly spherical with no contamination during the processing, while unique microstructures are observed on the surface and inside. These spherical particles exhibit sharp magnetic transitions and huge magnetic entropy change of 0.34 J cm^{-3} K^{-1} for a magnetic field change of 5 T at 15.5 K. The high sphericality and the high magnetocaloric performance suggest that the HoB2 gas-atomized particles have good potential as magnetic refrigerants for use in magnetic refrigerators for hydrogen liquefaction., Comment: 6pages(double column), 6 figures

Analysis of XRD diffraction patterns is one of the keystones of materials science and materials research. With the advancement of data-driven methods for materials design, candidate materials can be quickly screened for the study of a desired physical property. Efficient methods to automatically analyze and identify phases present in a given pattern, are paramount for the success of this new paradigm. To aid this process, the open source python package Xray Estimation and Refinement Using Similarity (XERUS) for semi-automatic/automatic phase identification is presented. XERUS takes advantages of open crystal structure databases, not relying on proprietary databases, to obtain crystal structures on the fly, being then chemical space agnostic. By wrapping around GSASII, it can automatically simulate patterns and calculate similarity measures used for phase identification. Our approach is simple and quick but also applicable to multiphase identification, by coupling the similarity calculations with quick refinements followed by an iterative peak removal process. XERUS is shown in action in four different experimental datasets and also it is benchmarked against a recently proposed deep learning method for a mixture dataset covering the Li-Mn-O-F chemical space. The high-pressure phase of La(O,F)BiS2 exhibits the highest transition temperature among all the BiS2-based superconductors. Various studies, such as the investigation of isotope effects, have been conducted to explain its superconducting mechanism. However, there are very few reports on the electrical transport properties and vibration modes of single-crystalline La(O,F)BiS2 under high pressure. In this study, we developed a diamond anvil cell with dual-probe diamond electrodes to measure the electrical transport properties of La(O,F)BiS2 single crystal and Pb as a manometer at low temperature. Using the developed system, a linear decrease in the transition temperature and phonon hardening was observed under the application of pressure on La(O,F)BiS2 single crystal.

NbBiCh$_3$ (Ch = S, Se) misfit-layered superconducting single crystals were successfully grown using a CsCl/KCl flux for the first time. The obtained crystals had a well-developed habit parallel to the c-plane with a typical width of 1-2 mm and thickness of 10-40 um. The superconducting transition temperatures with zero resistivity of NbBiS$_3$ single crystals obtained from the nominal composition of Nb0.9Bi1.2S3 was 0.31 K, and that value of the NbBiSe$_3$ single crystals grown from the stoichiometry composition (NbBiSe$_3$) was 2.3 K. Sharp decreases in electric resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at approximately 3 K suggested a possible superconducting transition temperature of NbBiSe$_3$. The normal-state anisotropy values of grown NbBiS$_3$ and NbBiSe$_3$ single crystals were 2.2-2.4 and 1.5-1.6, respectively., Comment: 4 figures + 3 figures (Supplementary Materials)

The effects of pressure on the superconducting properties of a Bi-based layered superconductor La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6, which possesses a four-layer-type conducting layer, have been studied through the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The crystal structure under pressure was examined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction at SPring-8. In the low-pressure regime, bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc of ~ 4.5 K was induced by pressure, which was achieved by in-plane chemical pressure effect owing to the compression of the tetragonal structure. In the high-pressure regime above 6.4 GPa, a structural symmetry lowering was observed, and superconducting transitions with a Tc ~ 8 K were observed. We report the fabrication of ErAl2 magnetocaloric wires by a powder-in-tube method (PIT) and the evaluation of magnetic entropy change through magnetization measurements. The magnetic entropy change of ErAl2 PIT wires exhibits similar behavior to the bulk counterpart, while its magnitude is reduced by the decrease in the volume fraction of ErAl2 due to the surrounding non-magnetic sheaths. We find that another effect reduces the magnetic entropy change of the ErAl2 PIT wires around the Curie temperature, and discuss its possible origin in terms of a correlation between magnetic properties of ErAl2 and mechanical properties of sheath material., Comment: This is the version of the article before peer review or editing, as submitted by an author to {insert name of Journal}. We have successfully synthesized the c-axis oriented YBa2Cu4O8 (Y-124) film on a SrTiO3 (1 0 0) substrate via a coprecipitation and a dip-coating method. The precipitations including Y, Ba and Cu ions were obtained using their metal nitrates solution and the aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and oxalic acid. Superconducting transition of the synthesized film was observed at 64-70 K corresponding to bulk Y-124 in the magnetization and resistance measurement. We introduce a novel nanofabrication technique to directly deposit catalyst pads for the chemical vapor deposition synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) at any desired position on a substrate by Gallium focused ion beam (FIB) induced deposition of silicon oxide thin films from the metalorganic Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) precursor. A high resolution in the positioning of the SWCNTs is naturally achieved as the imaging and deposition by FIB are conducted concurrently in situ at the same selected point on the substrate. This technique has substantial advantages over the current state-of-the-art methods that are based on complex and multistep lithography processes.

Ce(O,F)Sb(S,Se)2 single crystals were successfully grown using a CsCl/KCl flux method. The obtained crystals have a plate-like shape with the typical size of 1-2 mm and well-developed ab-plane, which enables X-ray single crystal structural analysis. The Ce(O,F)Sb(S,Se)2 crystallizes in a monoclinic space group, P21/m, with lattice parameters of a = 4.121(7) A, b = 4.109(7) A, c = 13.233(15) A, beta = 97.94(7) deg. It is composed of alternate stacking of Ce-(O,F) and Sb-SSe layers, and the Sb-SSe layer includes selective occupation of Se atoms in its in-plane site. The valence state of Ce is estimated to be Ce3+ by X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy analysis. Single crystals of Nd-substituted LuBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ were successfully grown by the KOH flux method. The single phase of Lu$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$Ba$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ [(Lu,Nd)124] formed at $x = 0.2$. The compound crystallized as orthorhombic Ammm structure with lattice constants of a = 3.835(3) {\AA}, b = 3.879(2) {\AA} and c = 27.195(6) {\AA}. Single crystal structural analysis demonstrated that the Nd ion partially occupied the Lu site. The (Lu,Nd)124 exhibited the superconducting transition at ~75 K in the magnetic susceptibility and resistivity. The $T_c$ and the c-axis of the (Lu,Nd)124 corresponded to Tm124. These results indicate that RE124 equivalent to the one composed of single RE element is obtained by combination of two RE elements., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Candidates for new thermoelectric and superconducting materials, which have narrow band gap and flat bands near band edges, were searched by the high-throughput first-principles calculation from an inorganic materials database. The synthesized SnBi$_2$Se$_4$ among the target compounds showed a narrow band gap of 354 meV, and a thermal conductivity of 1 W/Km at ambient pressure. The sample SnBi$_2$Se$_4$ showed a metal-insulator transition at 11.1 GPa, as predicted by a theoretical estimation. Furthermore, the two pressure-induced superconducting transitions were discovered at under 20.2 GPa and 47.3 GPa. The data-driven search is a promising approach to discover new functional materials.

We report the pressure effect in Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+{\delta} (Bi-2223) single crystal with a small amount of intergrowth of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{\delta} (Bi-2212). Their superconducting transition temperatures Tcs showed a domelike shape as a function of pressure, which showed a good agreement with the general relation between the carrier concentration and Tc. Sulfur-doped SnSe single crystal was successfully synthesized using a melt and slow-cooling method. The chemical composition and valence state of the obtained sample were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The pressure range of a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes was upgraded to 104 GPa using nano-polycrystalline diamond anvil to investigate a pressure effect for the sample. Electrical resistivity measurements of sulfur-doped SnSe single crystal showed the insulator-metal-superconductor transition by applying high pressure up to 75.9 GPa.

Superconducting single crystals of Rb-intercalated FeSe compounds Rb$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ were prepared by using a starting material of Rb$_2$Se as a Rb source. The superconducting properties and the surface microstructures were systematically controlled by varying the cooling rate in the quenching process. The higher cooling rate in the sample provided a higher superconducting transition temperature with highly connected superconducting mesh-like surface structure. One of the ultimate goals of the study of iron-based superconductors is to identify the common feature that produces the high critical temperature (Tc). In the early days, based on a weak-coupling viewpoint, the nesting between hole- and electron-like Fermi surfaces (FSs) leading to the so-called $s\pm$ state was considered to be one such key feature. However, this theory has faced a serious challenge ever since the discovery of alkali-metal-doped FeSe (AFS) superconductors, in which only electron-like FSs with a nodeless superconducting gap are observed. Several theories have been proposed, but a consistent understanding is yet to be achieved. Here we show experimentally that a hole-like band exists in KxFe2-ySe2, which presumably forms a hole-like Fermi surface. The present study suggests that AFS can be categorized in the same group as iron arsenides with both hole- and electron-like FSs present. From field-angle dependent Andreev reflection spectroscopy on single crystals of La(O,F)BiSeS, which belongs to the recently discovered BiCh 2 (Ch = S, Se) based layered superconductors, we found that the superconductivity in La(O,F)BiSeS is highly anisotropic. We measured a superconducting energy gap of 0.61 meV for current injected along c-axis at 1.5 K. Detailed temperature and magnetic field dependent studies of the gap also reveal the presence of unconventional pairing in La(O,F)BiSeS. We show that the observed anisotropic superconducting properties can be attributed to the anisotropy in the superconducting order parameter with a complex symmetry in superconducting La(O,F)BiSeS., Comment: 4 figures, references included

The high anisotropy in RO1-aFaBiS2 (R denotes a rare-earth element) superconductors demonstrates their potential use as intrinsic Josephson junctions, considering the weak coupling among BiS2-PrO(F)-BiS2 (superconducting-normal-superconducting) layers along the c-axis. We grew PrO1-aFaBiS2 single crystals using CsCl/KCl flux. The superconducting anisotropies of the grown single crystals were estimated to be approximately 40-50 from the effective mass model. The c-axis transport properties were characterized using single-crystal s-shaped intrinsic Josephson junctions with a focused ion beam. Along the c-axis, the crystals showed zero resistivity at 2.7 K and a critical current density of 1.33*10^3 A/cm2 at 2.0 K. The current-voltage curve along the c-axis displayed hysteresis. The c-axis transport measurements under a magnetic field parallel to the ab-plane revealed a "lock-in" state due to the Josephson vortex flow, indicating that BiS2 superconductors are promising candidates for intrinsic Josephson junctions., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures

We observed superconductivity ($T_{c}$ $\simeq$2-3 K) in Li$_{x}$RhB$_{y}$ intermetallics wherein $x$ and $y$ vary over a wide compositional range. The crystal structure consists of cubic unit-cell ($a$ $\simeq$ 12.1 \AA ) with centro-symmetric space group $Pn\bar{3}n$. A weak but positive pressure-induced increase of $T_{c}$ was observed. The correlations between the composition and each of the followings were followed over a wide range of $x$ and $y$: the unit-cell dimensions, $T_{c}$ , Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma$, Debye temperature $\theta_{D}$, and critical fields $H$$_{c1}$ and $H$$_{c2}$. The thermal evolution of the electronic specific heat within the superconducting phase was observed to follow a quadratic-in-$T$ behavior. In addition, a paramagnetic Meissner Effect (PME) is manifested during a low-field-cooled magnetization cycle. Single crystal of La(O,F)BiSe2 was successfully grown for the first time by the CsCl flux method. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis clearly showed that La(O,F)BiSe2 crystalizes with space group P4/nmm (lattice parameters a = 4.1408(2) {\AA}, c = 14.1096(6) {\AA}). The structure is composed of alternating BiSe2 and LaO layers. Magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements showed the superconducting transition at 3.6 K, which is higher than that of as-grown La(O,F)BiS2. The structural analysis implies that La(O,F)BiSe2 is potential superconductor having higher Tc under high pressure., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

We present scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on a cleaved surface of the recently discovered superconductor NdO$_{0.7}$F$_{0.3}$BiS$_{2}$ with a transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) of 5.1 K.Tunneling spectra at 4.2 K (below $T_{\mathrm{c}}$) and 22 K (above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$) show a large spectroscopic gap ($\sim$40 mV), which is inconsistent with the metallic nature demonstrated in bulk measurements. Moreover, we find two interesting real-space electronic features. The first feature is a `checkerboard stripe' electronic state characterized by an alternating arrangement of two types of nanocluster. In one cluster, one-dimensional electronic stripes run along one Bi-Bi direction, whereas, in the other cluster, the stripes run along the other Bi-Bi direction. The second feature is a nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity whose microscopic source seems to be atomic defects on the cleaved surface or dopant F atoms., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We succeeded in growing single crystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx with exceptionally high fluorine concentration by using a CsCl flux method. Comparing to conventional flux methods, this method can introduce about double the amount of fluorine into the oxygen site. The obtained single crystal shows the highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc = 57.5 K) in single crystalline iron pnictides. In addition, the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) is almost three times as large as that of previously reported single crystals. This suggests that our single crystals are suitable for investigation of the intrinsic superconducting properties since they have few defects and impurities. Using both the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model and the effective mass model, we demonstrated that a higher fluorine concentration suppresses the anisotropic superconductivity of SmFeAsO1-xFx., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We investigated the crystal structure and superconducting properties of As-grown and high-pressure-annealed PrO0.5F0.5BiS2. We found that the high-pressure annealing generates uniaxial lattice contraction along the c axis. Both As-grown and high-pressure-annealed PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 show bulk superconductivity. The Tc of PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 is clearly enhanced from Tczero = 3.6 K to Tczero = 5.5 K by high-pressure annealing. Unexpectedly, the semiconducting characteristics is relatively enhanced by high-pressure annealing. Namely, we assume that the enhancement of Tc can not be understood by an increase of electron carriers. Having considered these facts, we conclude that the enhancement of Tc correlates with uniaxial lattice contraction along the c axis in PrO0.5F0.5BiS2., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures; The lattice parameter c for the HP sample was revised

Structural phase separation in A$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ system has been studied by different experimental techniques, however, it should be important to know how the electronic uniformity is influenced, on which length scale the electronic phases coexist, and what is their spatial distribution. Here, we have used novel scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) to study the electronic phase separation in K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, providing a direct measurement of the topological spatial distribution of the different electronic phases. The SPEM results reveal a peculiar interconnected conducting filamentary phase that is embedded in the insulating texture. The filamentary structure with a particular topological geometry could be important for the high T$_c$ superconductivity in the presence of a phase with a large magnetic moment in A$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ materials., Comment: 14 pages,3 figures

We use core level and valence band soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SXPES) to investigate electronic structure of new BiS$_{2}$ layered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$. Core level spectra of doped samples show a new spectral feature at the lower binding energy side of the Bi 4${f}$ main peak, which may be explained by core-hole screening with metallic states near the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$). Experimental electronic structure and its ${x}$ dependence (higher binding energy shift of the valence band as well as appearance of new states near $E_{\rm F}$ having dominant Bi 6${p}$ character) were found to be consistent with the predictions of band structure calculations in general. Noticeable deviation of the spectral shape of the states near $E_{\rm F}$ from that of calculations might give insight into the interesting physical properties. Superconductivity is successfully induced by utilizing a battery-like reaction found in a typical Li-ion battery. Excess Fe in FeTe0.8S0.2 is electrochemically de-intercalated by applying a voltage in a citric acid solution. The superconducting properties improve with an increase in the applied voltage up to 1.5 V. This result suggests that an electrochemical reaction can be used as a novel method to develop new superconducting materials., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Correlation between crystal structure and superconducting properties of the BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 was investigated. We have prepared LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 polycrystalline samples with various lattice constants. It was found that the annealing the sample under high pressure generated uniaxial strain along the c axis. Further, the highly-strained sample showed higher superconducting properties. We concluded that the uniaxial strain along the c axis was positively linked with the enhancement of superconductivity in the LaO1-xFxBiS2 system., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We show the observation of the coexistence of bulk superconductivity and ferromagnetism in CeO1-xFxBiS2(x = 0 - 1.0) prepared by annealing under high-pressure. In CeO1-xFxBiS2 system, both superconductivity and two types of ferromagnetism with respective magnetic transition temperatures of 4.5 K and 7.5 K are induced upon systematic F substitution. This fact suggests that carriers generated by the substitution of O by F are supplied to not only the BiS2 superconducting layers but also the CeO blocking layers. Furthermore, the highest superconducting transition temperature is observed when the ferromagnetism is also enhanced, which implies that superconductivity and ferromagnetism are linked to each other in the CeO1-xFxBiS2 system., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

We report $^{77}$Se-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results down to sufficiently low temperatures under magnetic fields parallel to both the $ab$-plane and the c-axis in a paramagnetic/superconducting (PM/SC) phase of K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$. The observation of anisotropy in the orbital part of the Knight shift results in the anisotropy of its spin part increasing on approaching the transition temperature. The anisotropy of the Korringa relation suggests the presence of the weak spin fluctuations with a finite wave vector $\bm{q}$, which induce the magnetic fluctuations along the ab-plane at the Se site. Such fluctuations do not correspond to the stripe $(\pi,0)$ correlation of the Fe moment observed in many Fe-based superconductors, and are not contradictory to weak $(\pi,\pi)$ correlations. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows a field-independent $T_1T \sim const.$ behavior at low temperatures for $H \parallel ab$, which is attributed to the nonzero density of states at the Fermi level and can be explained by the sign-changing order parameter even for nodeless gaps. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ is reproduced well by nodeless models with two isotropic gaps or a single anisotropic gap. The obtained gap magnitude in the isotropic two-gap model is comparable to those obtained in the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for the publication in J. The transport and structural properties of Fe1+yTe1-xSx (x=0, 0.05, and 0.10) crystals were studied in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T. The application of high magnetic fields results in positive magnetoresistance effect with prominent hystereses in the antiferromagnetic state. Polarizing microscope images obtained at high magnetic fields showed simultaneous occurrence of structural transitions. We have successfully synthesized FeSe films by the electrochemical deposition in the electrolyte containing FeCl_{2}\cdot4H_{2}O, SeO_{2} and Na_{2}SO_{4}. The composition ratio of Fe and Se was controlled by the synthesis voltage and pH value. The FeSe film with the composition ratio of Fe : Se = 1 : 1 is fabricated at a voltage of -0.9 V and pH 2.1 in our electrochemical deposition. This sample has a highly crystalline tetragonal FeSe structure and exhibits a superconducting transition at 8.1 K, comparable to FeSe synthesized by other methods.

We investigated pressure effects on transition temperature (Tc) of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2 using a BeCu/NiCrAl hybrid-type clamped piston-cylinder cell. The Tc(onset) was 33K at 0.85 GPa. With increasing pressure, Tc(onset) gradually increased and reached 36.6 K at 2.03 GPa., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We report successful fabrication of multi- and mono-core FeSe wires with high transport critical current density Jc using a simple in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The seven-core wire showed transport Jc of as high as 1027 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The superconducting transition temperature Tczero was observed at 10.5 K in the wire-samples, which is about 2 K higher than that of bulk FeSe. To find good sheath materials that react minimally with the superconducting core of iron-based superconducting wires, we investigated the reaction between polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.92F0.08 and the following seven metals: Cu, Fe, Ni, Ta, Nb, Cr and Ti. Each of the seven metals was prepared as a sheath-material candidate. The interfacial microstructures of SmFeAsO0.92F0.08 and these metal-sheath samples were analysed by an electron probe microanalyzer after annealing at 1000 °C for 20 h. Amongst the seven metal-sheath samples, we found that Cu was the best, because it reacted only very weakly with polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.92F0.08. Moreover, Cu is essential for superconducting wires as a stabilizing material. Metal sheaths made of Fe and Ni do not give rise to reaction layers, but large interdiffusion between these metals and polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.92F0.08 occurs. In contrast, metal sheaths made of Ta, Nb, Cr and Ti do form reaction layers. Their reaction layers apparently prevent electric current from flowing from the sheath material to the superconducting core. In general, through this research, Cu will be expected to be suitable not only as a stabilizing material but also as a sheath material for superconducting Sm-1111 wire fabricated by the ex situ PIT method.

PbO-type Fe chalcogenide has been drawing much attention as the Fe-based superconductor with the most simple crystal structure. Whereas FeSe is an intrinsic superconductor, FeTe, while having a structure analogous to FeSe, exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering. The relationship between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity provides key information to understand better superconductivity in Fe chalcogenides. Furthermore the significant pressure effect on Tc in the Fe-chalcogenide superconductors, which is likely to be correlated with the crystal structure and/or magnetism, is important in elucidating the mechanism of Fe-based superconductivity. We report the successful fabrication of mono- and seven-core superconducting wires of FeSe1-xTex using an in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The reacted layer in these wires were found to have composite structure with composition nearly FeSe and FeTe for the inner and outer layers, although a single layer of composition FeSe0.5Te0.5 was supposed to be formed. The self-field transport Jc values at 4.2 K were found to be 226.2 A/cm2 and 100.3 A/cm2 respectively for mono- and seven-core wires. The Jc's of mono- and seven-core wires dropped rapidly at low fields and then showed a gradual decrease with increasing magnetic fields. In addition, the seven-core wire showed higher Jc than the mono-core wire under higher magnetic fields, indicating that the seven-core wire of FeSe1-xTex superconductor using Fe-diffusion PIT method is advantageous for the superconducting-wire application under high magnetic fields., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

The superconducting FeSe films were successfully fabricated using the electrochemical synthesis. The composition ratio of Fe and Se can be controlled by the electric potential and pH value. We found that the FeSe films deposited at the electric potential -1.75 V and pH 2.3 show the superconducting transition at 3.5 K. We synthesized the new Fe-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2 single crystals. The obtained single crystal exhibited a sharp superconducting transition, and the onset and zero-resistivity temperature was estimated to be 33 and 31.8 K, respectively. A high upper critical field of 192 T was obtained. Anisotropy of superconductivity of K0.8Fe2Se2 was ~3.6. The intrinsic pinning properties of FeSe0.5Te0.5, which is the superconductor with Tc of about 14 K, were studied by the analysis of magnetization curves by the extended critical state model. In the magnetization measurements by SQUID magnetometer, the external magnetic fields were applied parallel and perpendicular to c-axis of the sample. The critical current density Jc's under the perpendicular field of 1 T were estimated by using the Kimishima model as about 1.6 x 10^4, 8.8 x 10^3, 4.1 x 10^3, and 1.5 x 10^3 A/cm2 at 5, 7, 9, and 11 K, respectively, and the temperature dependence of Jc could be fitted with the exponential law of Jc(0)xexp(-{\alpha}T /Tc) up to 9 K and power law of Jc(0)x(1-T / Tc)n near Tc., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

We have performed soft x-ray and ultrahigh-resolution laser-excited photoemission measurements on tetragonal FeSe, which was recently identified as a superconductor. Energy dependent study of valence band is compared to band structure calculations and yields a reasonable assignment of partial densities of states. However, the sharp peak near the Fermi level slightly deviates from the calculated energy position, giving rise to the necessity of self-energy correction. We have also performed ultrahigh-resolution laser photoemission experiment on FeSe and observed the suppression of intensity around the Fermi level upon cooling., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Single-crystalline (Lu, Ca)Ba2Cu3O7-d (Lu(Ca)123) whiskers have been successfully grown using the Te-doping method. X-ray diffraction patterns of Lu(Ca)123 whiskers showed sharp (0 0 l) peaks corresponding to REBa2Cu3O7-d phase (RE = rare earth elements). A huge enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed in tetragonal FeSe superconductor under high pressure. The onset temperature became as high as 27 K at 1.48 GPa and the pressure coefficient showed a huge value of 9.1 K/GPa. The upper critical field Hc2 was estimated to be ~ 72 T at 1.48 GPa. Because of the high Hc2, FeSe system may be a candidate for application as superconducting wire rods. We have investigated the low energy electronic state of a boron-doped diamond thin film by the ultrahigh resolution laser-excited photoemission spectroscopy. We observed a clear shift of the leading edge below 11 K indicative of a superconducting gap opening ($\Delta \sim 0.78$ meV at 4.5 K). The gap feature is significantly broad and the well-defined quasiparticle peak is not recognizable even at the lowest temperature of measurement 4.5 K. Single-crystal whiskers of R1Ba2Cu3Ox (R-123, R= La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu) phase have been successfully grown by the Te- and Ca-doping method. The whiskers were grown from precursor pellets at just below their partial melting (peritectic) temperatures. The nominal composition of the R-123 whiskers is R1+uBa2+vCawCu3Ox (u+v+w=0, w>0) with R and/or Ba sites being substituted by Ca. However, the amount of Te was less than the analytical limit. The critical temperatures of the R-123 whiskers were around 80 K, and among these whiskers those with larger R ionic radii such as Dy, Gd, Eu and Sm require post-annealing in an oxygen atmosphere., R1Ba2Cu3O7-d, whisker, R ionic radius, crystal growth, Ca including R-123 phase, critical temperature, composition. The paper reports the first successful fabrication of MgB2 superconducting tape using a flexible metallic substrate as well as its strong pinning force, which was verified by direct measurement of transport critical current density. The tape was prepared by depositing MgB2 film on a Hastelloy tape buffered with an YSZ layer. The Jc of the tape exceeds 105A/cm2 at 4.2K and 10T, which is considered as a common benchmark for magnet application. The Jc dependence on magnetic field remains surprisingly very small up to 10T, suggesting that the tape has much better magnetic field characteristic than conventional Nb-Ti wires in liquid helium., Comment: 3 page PDF file

A Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d cross-whiskers junction has been successfully discovered as a novel intrinsic Josephson junction without using any technique for micro-fabrication. Two Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d whisker crystals were placed crosswise on a MgO substrate and heated at 850C for 30 min. They were electrically connected at their c-planes. The measurement terminals were made at the four ends of the whiskers. The I-V characteristics of the cross-whiskers junction at 5K were found to show a clear multiple-branch structure with a spacing of approximately 15 mV that is a feature of the intrinsic Josephson junction. The critical current density Jc was estimated to be 1170 A/cm2. The branch-structure was strongly suppressed by the magnetic field above 1kOe., Comment: 4 pages, PDF file
