Search

Time-resolved spectra of six short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs), measured by the Swift telescope, are used to estimate the parameters of a plerion-like model of the X-ray afterglow. The unshrouded, optically thin component of the afterglow is modelled as emanating from an expanding bubble of relativistic, shock-accelerated electrons fuelled by a central object. The electrons are injected with a power-law distribution and cool mainly by synchrotron losses. We compute posteriors for model parameters describing the central engine (e.g. spin frequency at birth, magnetic field strength) and shock acceleration (e.g. power-law index, minimum injection energy). It is found that the central engine is compatible with a millisecond magnetar, and the shock physics is compatible with what occurs in Galactic supernova remnants, assuming standard magnetic field models for the magnetar wind. Separately, we allow the magnetic field to vary arbitrarily and infer that it is roughly constant and lower in magnitude than the wind-borne extension of the inferred magnetar field. This may be due to the expansion history of the bubble, or the magnetization of the circumstellar environment of the sGRB progenitor.

The central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) remains an open and forefront topic in the era of multimessenger astrophysics. The X-ray plateaus appear in some GRB afterglows, which are widely considered to originate from the spindown of magnetars. According to the stable magnetar scenario of GRBs, an X-ray plateau and a decay phase as $\sim t^{-2}$ should appear in X-ray afterglows. Meanwhile, the ``normal'' X-ray afterglow is produced by the external shock from GRB fireball. We analyze the Neil Gehrels \emph{Swift} GRB data, then find three gold samples, which have an X-ray plateau and a decay phase as $\sim t^{-2}$ superimposed on the jet-driven normal component. Based on these features of the lightcurves, we argue that the magnetars should be the central engines of these three GRBs. GRB 060505 was the first well-known nearby (at redshift 0.089) "hybrid" gamma-ray burst that has a duration longer than 2 seconds but without the association of a supernova down to very stringent limits. The prompt $\gamma-$ray flash lasting $\sim 4$ sec could consist of an intrinsic short burst and its tail emission, but the sizable temporal lag ($\sim 0.35$ sec) as well as the environment properties led to the widely-accepted classification of a long duration gamma-ray burst originated from the collapse of a massive star. Here for the $ first$ time we report the convincing evidence for a thermal-like optical radiation component in the spectral energy distribution of the early afterglow emission. In comparison to AT2017gfo, the thermal radiation is $\sim 2$ times brighter and the temperature is comparable at similar epochs. The optical decline is much quicker than that in X-rays, which is also at odds with the fireball afterglow model but quite natural for the presence of a blue kilonova. Our finding reveals a neutron star merger origin of the hybrid GRB 060505 and strongly supports the theoretical speculation that some binary neutron stars can merge ultra-quickly (within $\sim 1$ Myr) after their formation when the surrounding region is still highly star-forming and the metallicity remains low. Following up on a recent study describing a flexible plasma source operated in planar geometry, the performance of a cold atmospheric plasma jet (CAPJ) matrix emanating radially from a soft cylindrical surface in the open air is presented. The plasma device, which has a set of small outlets produced in its side surface, has a length of 12 cm and an outer diameter of 5.4 cm. The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) sustaining the plasma jets is generated in helium flowing between two coaxial electrodes, which are separated by both an insulating tape and a cylindrical wall made of polymer foam. Two operation modes are considered: four equidistant CAPJs at the same axial position (round brush mode) and three aligned CAPJs at constant azimuthal angle (comb mode). All discharges, excited by 15 kHz-AC voltages at 3.8 kV in amplitude, have resulted in uniform lengths and intensities of the jets. Consumed discharge powers of between 0.1 and 1.5 W have been estimated from current-voltage measurements. Optical emission spectroscopy has shown the preponderance of hydroxyl groups, nitrogen molecules, and helium atoms in the active DBD region and the jet afterglow zone. This new design of CAPJ anticipates promising applications for treating the inner surface of hollow and delicate components for activation or healing purposes.

The afterglow of GRB 170817A has been detected for more than three years, but the origin of the multi-band afterglow light curves remains under debate. A classical top-hat jet model is faced with difficulties in producing a shallow rise of the afterglow light curves as observed $(F_{\nu} \propto T^{0.8})$. Here we reconsider the model of stratified ejecta with energy profile of $E(>\Gamma \beta)=E_0(\Gamma \beta)^{-k}$ as the origin of the afterglow light curves of the burst, where $\Gamma$ and $\beta$ are the Lorentz factor and speed of the ejecta, respectively. $k$ is the power-law slope of the energy profile. We consider the ejecta are collimated into jets. Two kinds of jet evolutions are investigated, including a lateral-spreading jet and a non-lateral-spreading jet. We fit the multi-band afterglow light curves, including the X-ray data at one thousand days post-burst, and find that both the models of the spreading and non-spreading jets can fit the light curves well, but the observed angular size of the source and the apparent velocity of the flux centroid for the spreading jet model are beyond the observation limits, while the non-spreading jet model meets the observation limits. Some of the best-fit parameters for the non-spreading jet model, such as the number density of the circumburst medium $\sim10^{-2}$ cm$^{-3}$ and the total jet kinetic energy $E \sim 4.8\times 10^{51}$ erg, also appear plausible. The best-fit slope of the jet energy profile is $k \sim 7.1$. Our results suggest that the afterglow of GRB 170817A may arise from the stratified jet and that the lateral spreading of the jet is not significant., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. GRB160203A is a high redshift long gamma-ray burst presenting a collection of unusual features in the afterglow light curve. We study its optical and X-ray data. We find this event to occur within a constant density medium during the first part of the afterglow. However, after 13 ks we spot some flaring activities in the optical and X-ray light curves. We explain these flares by fluctuation of densities of the surrounding medium. Other scenarios, such as energy injection from a magnetar or variation of microphysical parameters are not supported by the data. We tentatively link these fluctuations to an unusual host galaxy, with gas density similar to the Milky Way and a dense cocoon of matter around a stellar progenitor similar to a Wolf-Rayet star. We present a search for radio afterglows from long gamma-ray bursts using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Our search used the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey, covering the entire celestial sphere south of declination $+41^\circ$, and three epochs of the Variables and Slow Transients Pilot Survey (Phase 1), covering $\sim 5,000$ square degrees per epoch. The observations we used from these surveys spanned a nine-month period from 2019 April 21 to 2020 January 11. We crossmatched radio sources found in these surveys with 779 well-localised (to $\leq 15''$) long gamma-ray bursts occurring after 2004 and determined whether the associations were more likely afterglow- or host-related through the analysis of optical images. In our search, we detected one radio afterglow candidate associated with GRB 171205A, a local low-luminosity gamma-ray burst with a supernova counterpart SN 2017iuk, in an ASKAP observation 511 days post-burst. We confirmed this detection with further observations of the radio afterglow using the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 859 days and 884 days post-burst. Combining this data with archival data from early-time radio observations, we showed the evolution of the radio spectral energy distribution alone could reveal clear signatures of a wind-like circumburst medium for the burst. Finally, we derived semi-analytical estimates for the microphysical shock parameters of the burst: electron power-law index $p = 2.84$, normalised wind-density parameter $A_* = 3$, fractional energy in electrons $\epsilon_{e} = 0.3$, and fractional energy in magnetic fields $\epsilon_{B} = 0.0002$., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The bright scintillation of pure CsI operated at liquid-nitrogen temperature makes of this material a promising dark matter and neutrino detector. We present the first measurement of its quenching factor for nuclear recoils. Our findings indicate it is indistinguishable from that for sodium-doped CsI at room temperature. Additional properties such as light yield, afterglow, scintillation decay properties for electron and nuclear recoils, and energy proportionality are studied over the \mbox{108-165 K} temperature range, confirming the vast potential of this medium for rare-event searches.

The jet composition and radiative efficiency of GRBs are poorly constrained from the data. If the jet composition is matter-dominated (i.e. a fireball), the GRB prompt emission spectra would include a dominant thermal component originating from the fireball photosphere, and a non-thermal component presumably originating from internal shocks whose radii are greater than the photosphere radius. We propose a method to directly dissect the GRB fireball energy budget into three components and measure their values by combining the prompt emission and early afterglow data. The measured parameters include the initial dimensionless specific enthalpy density ($\eta$), bulk Lorentz factors at the photosphere radius ($\Gamma_{\rm ph}$) and before fireball deceleration ($\Gamma_0$), the amount of mass loading ($M$), as well as the GRB radiative efficiency ($\eta_\gamma$). All the parameters can be derived from the data for a GRB with a dominant thermal spectral component, a deceleration bump feature in the early afterglow lightcurve, and a measured redshift. The results only weakly depend on the density $n$ of the interstellar medium when the composition ${\cal Y}$ parameter (typically unity) is specified., Comment: Matching the version published in ApJL

Mergers of double neutron stars (DNSs) could lead to the formation of a long-lived massive remnant NS, which has been previously suggested to explain the AT 2017gfo kilonova emission in the famous GW170817 event. For an NS-affected kilonova, it is expected that a non-thermal emission component can be contributed by a pulsar wind nebula (PWN), which results from the interaction of the wind from the remnant NS with the preceding merger ejecta. Then, the discovery of such a non-thermal PWN emission can provide an evidence for the existence of the remnant NS. Similar to GRB 170817A, GRB 160821B is also one of the nearest short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). A candidate kilonova is widely believed to appear in the ultraviolet-optical-infrared afterglows of GRB 160821B. Here, by modeling the afterglow light curves and spectra of GRB 160821B, we find that the invoking of a non-thermal PWN emission can indeed be well consistent with the observational data. This may indicate that the formation of a stable massive NS could be not rare in the DNS merger events and, thus, the equation of state of the post-merger NSs should be stiff enough., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

We examine the effect of spatial resolution on initial mass ejection in grid-based hydrodynamic simulations of binary neutron star mergers. The subset of the dynamical ejecta with velocities greater than $\sim 0.6$c can generate an ultraviolet precursor to the kilonova on $\sim$hr timescales and contribute to a years-long non-thermal afterglow. Previous work has found differing amounts of this fast ejecta, by one- to two orders of magnitude, when using particle-based or grid-based hydrodynamic methods. Here we carry out a numerical experiment that models the merger as an axisymmetric collision in a co-rotating frame, accounting for Newtonian self-gravity, inertial forces, and gravitational wave losses. The lower computational cost allows us to reach spatial resolutions as high as $4$m, or $\sim 3\times 10^{-4}$ of the stellar radius. We find that fast ejecta production converges to within $10\%$ for a cell size of $20$m. This suggests that fast ejecta quantities found in existing grid-based merger simulations are unlikely to increase to the level needed to match particle-based results upon further resolution increases. The resulting neutron-powered precursors are in principle detectable out to distances $\lesssim 200$Mpc with upcoming facilities. We also find that head-on collisions at the free-fall speed, relevant for eccentric mergers, yield fast and slow ejecta quantities of order $10^{-2}M_\odot$, with a kilonova signature distinct from that of quasi-circular mergers., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We present the discovery of the radio afterglow and near-infrared (NIR) counterpart of the Swift short GRB 200522A, located at a small projected offset of $\approx 1$ kpc from the center of a young, star-forming host galaxy at $z=0.5536$. The radio and X-ray luminosities of the afterglow are consistent with those of on-axis cosmological short GRBs. The NIR counterpart, revealed by our HST observations at a rest-frame time of $\approx2.3$ days, has a luminosity of $\approx (1.3-1.7) \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This is substantially lower than on-axis short GRB afterglow detections, but is a factor of $\approx 8$-$17$ more luminous than the kilonova of GW170817, and significantly more luminous than any kilonova candidate for which comparable observations exist. The combination of the counterpart's color ($i-y = -0.08\pm 0.21$; rest-frame) and luminosity cannot be explained by standard radioactive heating alone. We present two scenarios to interpret the broad-band behavior of GRB 200522A: a synchrotron forward shock with a luminous kilonova (potentially boosted by magnetar energy deposition), or forward and reverse shocks from a $\approx14^{\circ}$, relativistic ($\Gamma_0 \gtrsim 80$) jet. Models which include a combination of enhanced radioactive heating rates, low-lanthanide mass fractions, or additional sources of heating from late-time central engine activity may provide viable alternate explanations. If a stable magnetar was indeed produced in GRB 200522A, we predict that late-time radio emission will be detectable starting $\approx 0.3$-$6$ years after the burst for a deposited energy of $\approx 10^{53}$ erg. Counterparts of similar luminosity to GRB 200522A associated with gravitational wave events will be detectable with current optical searches to $\approx\!250$ Mpc., Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. Radiation transport codes are often used in astrophysics to construct spectral models. In this work we demonstrate how producing these models for a time series of data can provide unique information about supernovae (SNe). Unlike previous work, we specifically concentrate on the method for obtaining the best synthetic spectral fits, and the errors associated with the preferred model parameters. We demonstrate how varying the ejecta mass, bolometric luminosity ($L_{bol}$) and photospheric velocity ($v_{ph}$), affects the outcome of the synthetic spectra. As an example we analyze the photospheric phase spectra of the GRB-SN\,2016jca. It is found that for most epochs (where the afterglow subtraction is small) the error on $L_{bol}$ and $v_{ph}$ was $\sim$5\%. The uncertainty on ejecta mass and K.E. was found to be $\sim$20%, although this can be expected to dramatically decrease if models of nebular phase data can be simultaneously produced. We also demonstrate how varying the elemental abundance in the ejecta can produce better synthetic spectral fits. In the case of SN\,2016jca it is found that a decreasing $^{56}$Ni abundance as a function of decreasing velocity produces the best fit models. This could be the case if the $^{56}$Ni was sythesised at the side of the GRB jet, or dredged up from the centre of the explosion. The Fermi-LAT collaboration presented the second gamma-ray burst (GRB) catalog covering its first 10 years of operations. A significant fraction of afterglow-phase light curves in this catalog cannot be explained by the closure relations of the standard synchrotron forward-shock model, suggesting that there could be an important contribution from another process. In view of the above, we derive the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) light curves from the reverse shock in the thick- and thin-shell regime for a uniform-density medium. We show that this emission could explain the GeV flares exhibited in some LAT light curves. Additionally, we demonstrate that the passage of the forward shock synchrotron cooling break through the LAT band from jets expanding in a uniform-density environment may be responsible for the late time ($\approx10^2$ s) steepening of LAT GRB afterglow light curves. As a particular case, we model the LAT light curve of GRB 160509A that exhibited a GeV flare together with a break in the long-lasting emission, and also two very high energy photons with energies of 51.9 and 41.5 GeV observed 76.5 and 242 s after the onset of the burst, respectively. Constraining the microphysical parameters and the circumburst density from the afterglow observations, we show that the GeV flare is consistent with a SSC reverse-shock model, the break in the long-lasting emission with the passage of the synchrotron cooling break through the Fermi-LAT band and the very energetic photons with SSC emission from the forward shock when the outflow carries a significant magnetic field ($R_{\rm B} \simeq 30$) and it decelerates in a uniform-density medium with a very low density ($n=4.554^{+1.128}_{-1.121}\times 10^{-4}\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$)., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. The nature of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) central engine still remains an enigma. Entities widely believed to be capable of powering the extreme jets are magnetars and black holes. The maximum rotational energy that is available in a millisecond magnetar to form a jet is ~10^52 erg. We identify 8 long GRBs whose jet opening angle corrected energetics of the prompt emission episode are >10^52 erg with high confidence level and therefore, their central engines are expected to be black holes. Majority of these GRBs present significant emission in sub-GeV energy range. The X-ray afterglow light curves of these bursts do not show any shallow decay behaviour such as a plateau, however, a few cases exhibit flares and multiple breaks instead of a single power-law decay. For a minimum mass of the black hole (~2 Msun), we find the efficiency of producing a jet from its rotational energy to range between 2%-270%. Highly energetic jets requiring high efficiencies implies that either the mass of these black holes are much larger or there are, in addition, other sources of energy which power the jet. By considering the Blandford-Znajek mechanism of jet formation, we estimate the masses of these black holes to range between ~2-60 Msun. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are known to be the most violent explosions in the universe, and a variety of correlations between observable GRB properties have been proposed in literature, but none of these correlations is valid for both long GRBs and short GRBs. In this paper we report the discovery of a universal correlation which is suitable for both long and short GRBs using three prompt emission properties of GRBs, i.e. the isotropic peak luminosity $L_{\rm iso}$, the peak energy of the time-integtated prompt emission spectrum $E_{\rm peak}$, and the "high signal" timescale $T_{\rm 0.45}$, $L_{\rm iso} \propto E_{\rm peak}^{1.94} T_{0.45}^{0.37}$. This universal correlation just involves properties of GRB prompt emission and does not require any information of afterglow phase, which can be used as a relatively unbiased redshift estimator. Here we use this correlation to estimate the pseudo-redshifts for short Gamma Ray Bursts and then use Lynden-Bell method to obtain a non-parametric estimate of their luminosity function and formation rate. The luminosity function is $\psi(L_0)\propto{L_0^{-0.63\pm{0.07}}}$ for dim SGRBs and $\psi(L_0)\propto{L_0^{-1.96\pm{0.28}}}$ for bright SGRBs, with the break point $6.95_{-0.76}^{+0.84}\times10^{50} erg/s$. The local formation rate of SGRBs is about 15 events $\rm Gpc^{-3}yr^{-1}$ . This paper is the first report describing how the concentrations of silicon and boron govern the cryogenic scintillation properties of n-type GaAs. It shows that valence band holes are promptly trapped on radiative centers and then combine radiatively with silicon donor band electrons at rates that increase with the density of free carriers. It also presents the range of silicon and boron concentrations needed for efficient light emission under X-ray excitation, which along with its low band gap and apparent absence of afterglow, make scintillating GaAs suitable for the detection of rare, low-energy electronic excitations from interacting dark matter particles. A total of 29 samples from four different suppliers were studied. Luminosities and timing responses were measured for the four principal emission bands centered at 860, 930, 1070, and 1335 nm, and for the total emissions. Excitation pulses of 40 kVp X-rays were provided by a light-excited X-ray tube driven by an ultra-fast laser. Scintillation emissions from 800 to 1350 nm were measured using an InGaAs photomultiplier. Within the concentration ranges of free carriers from 2 x 10^16/cm3 to 6 x 10^17/cm3 and boron from 1.5 x 10^18/cm3 to 6 x 10^18/cm3, nine samples have luminosities > 70 photons/keV and two have luminosities > 110 photons/keV. Other samples in that range have lower luminosities due to higher concentrations of non-radiative centers. In this paper, we present a numerical method to study the predicted lightcurves as a function of viewing angle. We extrapolate the fitting formulae for the mass and velocity of tidal dynamical ejecta across a wide range of mass ratio validated with 66 simulations and use them in the calculations of the kilonova lightcurves. The calculated peak luminosity of a BH-NS merger kilonova is typically about a few times $10^{41}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$, which is always $\lesssim4.5\times10^{41}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$. This corresponds to the AB absolute magnitudes fainter than $\sim -15\ {\rm mag}$ in optical and $\sim -16\ {\rm mag}$ in infrared. Since the projected photosphere area of the dynamical ejecta is much larger than that of the disk wind outflows, the dynamical ejecta usually contribute to the majority of the kilonova emission from BH-NS mergers. The fitted blackbody temperature and the shape of the observed multi-band lightcurves are insensitive to the line of sight. The peak time of the observed multi-band lightcurves, affected by the light propagation effect, is related to the relative motion direction between the dynamical ejecta and the observer. The observed luminosity varies with the projected photosphere area determined by the viewing angles. However, the predicted peak luminosity only varies by a factor of $\sim (2 - 3)$ (or by $\sim1\ {\rm mag}$) for different viewing angles. When the short-duration gamma-ray burst afterglow is taken into account, for an on-axis geometry, the kilonova emission is usually outshone by the afterglow emission and can be only observed in the redder bands, especially in the $K$-band at late times. Compared with GW170817/AT2017gfo, the BH-NS merger kilonovae are optically dim but possibly infrared bright. We analyze the additional effect on planetary atmospheres of recently detected gamma-ray burst afterglow photons in the range up to 1 TeV. For an Earth-like atmosphere we find that there is a small additional depletion in ozone versus that modeled for only prompt emission. We also find a small enhancement of muon flux at the planet surface. Overall, we conclude that the additional afterglow emission, even with TeV photons, does not result in a significantly larger impact over that found in past studies., Comment: Replaced with version to be published in MNRAS

[EN] The first gamma-ray burst detections by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes have been recently announced: GRB 190114C, detected by MAGIC, GRB 180720B and GRB 190829A, observed by H.E.S.S. A dedicated search for neutrinos in space and time coincidence with the gamma-ray emission observed by IACTs has been performed using ANTARES data. The search covers both the prompt and afterglow phases, yielding no neutrinos in coincidence with the three GRBs studied. Upper limits on the energetics of the neutrino emission are inferred. We study, by numerical and analytical means, the evolution of a uniform one-dimensional collisionless plasma initiated between plane absorbing walls. Luminosity of GRB 170817A is much lower than that of other sGRBs. The measurement of the superluminal movement of the radio afterglow emission confirms the presence of the relativistic jet, and the emission features can be well explained by the structured jet model. In this paper, we calculate the luminosity distribution of sGRBs and its evolution with redshift based on the structured (Gaussian) jet model, and find that the typical luminosity increase with redshift, for nearby sGRBs (such as for luminosity distance less than 200 Mpc) the typical gamma-ray luminosity is just around 10^47-10^48 erg s-1, which naturally explains the very low radiation luminosity of GRB 170817A. We derived the detection probability of sGRBs by Fermi-GBM and found that the expected detection rate of sGRBs is only about 1 yr-1 within the distance of several hundred Mpc. We explored the effect of the power-law index {\alpha} of the merger time distribution on the observed characteristics and found that it had little effect on the observed luminosity and viewing-angle distributions. However, it is very interesting that, for different values of {\alpha}, the distributions of the number of observed sGRBs are quite different, so it is possible to determine the value of {\alpha} through observed distributions of the number of sGRBs. We used the Bayesian method to make a quantitative analysis and found that the value of {\alpha} may be identified when the number of observed sGRBs with known redshifts is more than 200. Finally, we compare our results of gamma-ray luminosity distribution with sGRBs with known redshifts, and found that our results are consistent with the observation, which implies that our simulation results can reproduce the observed luminosity distribution well., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. 2020, ApJ, 894, 11

The origin of gamma-ray burst (GRB) X-ray plateau, especially the internal plateau, is still unclear, but it could be related to GRB's central engine of magnetar. It is generally believed that the spin-down power of the magnetar is injected into forward external shock, however we propose here that most of the power will be dissipated behind the GRB jet through larger amplitude electromagnetic wave (LAEMW). Based on this proposal, the relevant physical conditions and observational implications are analyzed and discussed, and various kinds of X-ray light curves could be reproduced. Although it is still a matter of debate about the chromatic multi-band afterglow in the standard external afterglow fireball model, we can explain naturally this feature under this proposal, i.e., the electrons generating the X-ray plateau and emitting the optical afterglow are accelerated by different mechanisms. %Furthermore, we predict that the X-ray emission of spin-down wind could possibly precede the prompt emission of GRB jet if the energy of LAEMW is dissipated first but shock-induced radiation in the jet is produced later. The observations of GW170817/GRB170817A have confirmed that the coalescence of a neutron-star binary is the progenitor of a short gamma-ray burst. In the standard picture of a short gamma-ray burst, a collimated highly relativistic outflow is launched after merger and it successfully breaks out from the surrounding ejected matter. Using initial conditions inspired from numerical-relativity binary neutron-star merger simulations, we have performed general-relativistic hydrodynamic (HD) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations in which the jet is launched and propagates self-consistently. The complete set of simulations suggests that: (i) MHD jets have an intrinsic energy and velocity polar structure with a ``hollow core'' subtending an angle $\theta_{\rm core}\approx4^{\circ}-5^{\circ}$ and an opening angle of $\theta_{\rm jet}\gtrsim10^{\circ}$; (ii) MHD jets eject significant amounts of matter and two orders of magnitude more than HD jets; (iii) the energy stratification in MHD jets naturally yields the power-law energy scaling $E(>\Gamma\beta)\propto(\Gamma\beta)^{-4.5}$; (iv) MHD jets provide fits to the afterglow data from GRB170817A that are comparatively better than those of the HD jets and without free parameters; (v) finally, both of the best-fit HD/MHD models suggest an observation angle $\theta_{\rm obs} \simeq 21^{\circ}$ for GRB170817A., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, submitted

The spin-down energy of millisecond magnetars has been invoked to explain X-ray afterglow observations of a significant fraction of short and long gamma-ray bursts. Here, we extend models previously introduced in the literature, incorporating radiative losses with the spin down of a magnetar central engine through an arbitrary braking index. Combining this with a model for the tail of the prompt emission, we show that our model can better explain the data than millisecond-magnetar models without radiative losses or those that invoke spin down solely through vacuum dipole radiation. We find that our model predicts a subset of X-ray flares seen in some gamma-ray bursts. We can further explain the diversity of X-ray plateaus by altering the radiative efficiency and measure the braking index of newly-born millisecond magnetars. We measure the braking index of GRB061121 as $n=4.85^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$ suggesting the millisecond-magnetar born in this gamma-ray burst spins down predominantly through gravitational-wave emission., Comment: Published in MNRAS

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occurred in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are a special class of sources with outstanding scientific significance. TDEs can generate ultrafast winds, which should almost inevitably collide with the preexisting AGN dusty tori. We perform analytical calculations and simulations on the wind-torus interactions and find such a process can generate considerable X-ray afterglow radiation several years or decades later after the TDE outburst. This provides a new origin for the years delayed X-rays in TDEs. The X-ray luminosity can reach 10^{41-42} erg/s, and the light curve characteristics depend on the parameters of winds and tori. We apply the model to two TDE candidates, and provide lower limits on the masses of the disrupted stars, as well as rigorous constraints on the gas densities of tori. Our results suggest that the observations of the time delay, spectral shape, luminosity and the light curve of the X-ray afterglow can be used to constrain the physical parameters of both TDE winds and tori, including the wind velocity, wind density and torus density., Comment: 13 pages, submitted to ApJ

Binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are one of the proposed origins for both repeating and non-repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs), which associates FRBs with gravitational waves and short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this work, we explore detectability of radio afterglows from BNS mergers and compare it to the observed radio limits on FRB afterglows. We calculate the afterglow flux powered by the two components: a relativistic jet and a slower isotropic ejecta, and quantify the detection probability as a function of the source redshift, observing time, and flux sensitivity. The model parameter distributions inferred from short GRB afterglows are adopted, and viewing angle distributions (uniform spherical, gravitational-wave, on-axis biased) are assumed to reflect different searching scenario. Assuming that FRBs are not strongly beamed, we make comparison to FRBs detected with reported radio limits and find the detection probabilities are 1--10% in general, and hence not a strong constraint on the BNS progenitor model considering the small sample number (20% at 10$��$Jy sensitivity) for the isotropic component that would peak around $\sim$1--10 years after the merger. The detection of GW170817, it's extensive multi-wavelength follow-up campaign, and the large amount of theoretical development and interpretation that followed, have resulted in a significant step forward in the understanding of the binary neutron star merger phenomenon as a whole. One of its aspects is seeing the merger as a progenitor of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRB), which will be the subject of this review. On the one hand, GW170817 observations have confirmed some theoretical expectations, exemplified by the confirmation that binary neutron star mergers are the progenitors of SGRBs. In addition, the multimessenger nature of GW170817 has allowed for gathering of unprecedented data, such as the trigger time of the merger, the delay with which the gamma-ray photons were detected, and the brightening afterglow of an off-axis event. All together, the incomparable richness of the data from GW170817 has allowed us to paint a fairly detailed picture of at least one SGRB. GRB 160325A is the only bright burst detected by AstroSat CZT Imager in its primary field of view to date. In this work, we present the spectral and polarimetric analysis of the prompt emission of the burst using AstroSat, Fermi and Niel Gehrels Swift observations. The prompt emission consists of two distinct emission episodes separated by a few seconds of quiescent/ mild activity period. The first emission episode shows a thermal component as well as a low polarisation fraction of $PF < 37\, \%$ at $1.5\, \sigma$ confidence level. On the other hand, the second emission episode shows a non-thermal spectrum and is found to be highly polarised with $PF > 43\, \%$ at $1.5 \sigma$ confidence level. We also study the afterglow properties of the jet using {\it Swift}/XRT data. The observed jet break suggests that the jet is pointed towards the observer and has an opening angle of $1.2^{\circ}$ for an assumed redshift, $z = 2$. With composite modelling of polarisation, spectrum of the prompt emission and the afterglow, we infer that the first episode of emission originates from the photosphere with localised dissipation happening below it, and the second from the optically thin region above the photosphere. The photospheric emission is generated mainly by inverse Compton scattering, whereas the emission in the optically thin region is produced by the synchrotron process. The low radiation efficiency of the burst suggests that the outflow remains baryonic dominated throughout the burst duration with only a subdominant Poynting flux component, and the kinetic energy of the jet is likely dissipated via internal shocks which evolves from an optically thick to optically thin environment within the jet., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the lowest frequency measurements of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 171205A with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) covering a frequency range from 250--1450 MHz and a period of $4-937$ days. It is the first GRB afterglow detected at 250--500 MHz frequency range and the second brightest GRB detected with the uGMRT. Even though the GRB is observed for nearly 1000 days, there is no evidence of transition to non-relativistic regime. We also analyse the archival ${\it Chandra}$ X-ray data on day $\sim 70$ and day $\sim 200$. We also find no evidence of a jet break from the analysis of combined data. We fit synchrotron afterglow emission arising from a relativistic, isotropic, self-similar deceleration as well as from a shock-breakout of wide-angle cocoon. Our data also allow us to discern the nature and the density of the circumburst medium. We find that the density profile deviates from a standard constant density medium and suggests that the GRB exploded in a stratified wind like medium. Our analysis shows that the lowest frequency measurements covering the absorbed part of the light curves are critical to unravel the GRB environment. Our data combined with other published measurements indicate that the radio afterglow has contribution from two components: a weak, possibly slightly off-axis jet and a surrounding wider cocoon, consistent with the results of Izzo et al. (2019). The cocoon emission likely dominates at early epochs, whereas the jet starts to dominate at later epochs, resulting in flatter radio lightcurves., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

It is generally supposed that a transition from the normal decay phase (decay slope $\sim -1$) to a steeper phase (decay slope $\sim -2$) could be suggested as a jet break. The jet opening angle $\theta_{\rm jet}$ is then calculated from the jet break time of the afterglow light curve. This allows the derivation of the collimation-corrected energy $E_{\rm jet}$ of those GRBs. We extensively searched for the GRBs with jet break features from multi-wavelength afterglow light curves, and 138 GRBs with significant breaks were collected. The jet break times of those GRBs mainly range from 1000 s to $10^6$ s, and the distribution of the collimation-corrected energy $E_{\rm jet}$ peaks at $\sim10^{50}$ erg. We also confirmed the $E_{\rm \gamma,iso}-E_{\rm p,i}$, $E_{\rm jet}-E_{\rm p,i}$ and $E_{\rm \gamma,iso}-\theta_{\rm jet}$ relations, and found $E_{\rm \gamma,iso}-T_{\rm j,z}-E_{\rm p,i}$ relation remains tight with more multi-wavelength data. This tight $E_{\rm \gamma,iso}-T_{\rm j,z}-E_{\rm p,i}$ relation is also conformed by different groups of our selected GRBs in the paper. In addition, another two new and tighter correlations among $E_{\rm jet}-T_{\rm j,z}-E_{\rm p,i}$ are well confirmed for different circumburst mediums in this paper. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to be powered by ultrarelativistic jets. If these jets encounter and accelerate excess electrons and positrons produced by particle dark matter (DM) annihilation, the observed electromagnetic radiation would be enhanced. In this paper, we study GRB afterglow emission with the presence of abundant DM under the weakly interacting massive particle annihilation conditions. We calculate the light curves and spectra of the GRB afterglows with different parameters, i.e., DM density, particle DM mass, annihilation channel, and electron density of the interstellar medium. We find that the effect of DM may become noticeable in the afterglow spectra if the circumburst has a low electron number density ($n \lesssim 0.1~\rm cm^{-3}$) and if the DM has a high number density ($\rho_\chi \gtrsim 10^3~\rm GeV~cm^{-3}$). According to the standard galaxy DM density profile, GRB afterglows with DM contribution might occur at distances of several to tens of parsecs from the centers of massive galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The afterglow of a gamma ray burst (GRB) can give us valuable insight into the properties of its host galaxy. To correctly interpret the spectra of the afterglow we need to have a good understanding of the foreground interstellar medium (ISM) in our own Galaxy. The common practice to correct for the foreground is to use neutral hydrogen (HI) data from the Leiden/Argentina/Bonn (LAB) survey. However, the poor spatial resolution of the single dish data may have a significant effect on the derived column densities. To investigate this, we present new high-resolution HI observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) towards 4 GRBs. We combine the interferometric ATCA data with single dish data from the Galactic All Sky Survey (GASS) and derive new Galactic HI column densities towards the GRBs. We use these new foreground column densities to fit the Swift XRT X-ray spectra and calculate new intrinsic hydrogen column density values for the GRB host galaxies. We find that the new ATCA data shows higher Galactic HI column densities compared to the previous single dish data, which results in lower intrinsic column densities for the hosts. We investigate the line of sight optical depth near the GRBs and find that it may not be negligible towards one of the GRBs, which indicates that the intrinsic hydrogen column density of its host galaxy may be even lower. Observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at Very High Energy (VHE) offer a unique opportunity to investigate particle acceleration processes, magnetic fields and radiation fields in these events. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations have been proven to be a powerful tool providing unique information on the source size of the GRBs at mas scales, as well as their accurate positions and possible expansion speeds. This paper reports on the follow-up observations of GRB 190114C, the first ever GRB detected with high significance at TeV photon energies by the MAGIC telescope, conducted with the East Asia VLBI Network (EAVN) at 22 GHz on three epochs, corresponding to 6, 15 and 32 days after the burst. The derived maps do not show any significant source above 5 sigma. The inferred upper limits on the GRB 190114C flux density at 22 GHz are used here to constrain the allowable two-dimensional parameter space for the afterglow emission. We find that our limits are consistent with most afterglow parameter combinations proposed so far in the literature. This is the first effort for the EAVN to search and monitor a radio transient in the Target of Opportunity mode. In addition to the useful constraints on GRB 190114C radio emission, experience gained from these observations is very helpful for future routine operation of EAVN transient program., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. GRB 190114C is the first binary-driven hypernova (BdHN) fully observed from the initial supernova appearance to the final emergence of the optical SN signal. It offers an unprecedented testing ground for the BdHN theory and it is here determined and further extended to additional gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). BdHNe comprise two subclasses of long GRBs with progenitors a binary system composed of a carbon-oxygen star (CO$_\textrm{core}$) and a neutron star (NS) companion. The CO$_\textrm{core}$ explodes as a SN leaving at its center a newborn NS ($\nu$NS). The SN ejecta hypercritically accretes both on the $\nu$NS and the NS companion. BdHNe I are the tightest binaries where the accretion leads the companion NS to gravitational collapse into a black hole (BH). In BdHN II the accretion onto the NS is lower, so there is no BH formation. We observe the same structure of the afterglow for GRB 190114C and other selected examples of BdHNe I (GRB 130427A, GRB 160509A, GRB 160625B) and for BdHN II (GRB 180728A). In all the cases the explanation of the afterglow is reached via the synchrotron emission powered by the $\nu$NS: their magnetic fields structures and their spin are determined. For BdHNe I, we discuss the properties of the magnetic field embedding the newborn BH, inherited from the collapsed NS and amplified during the gravitational collapse process, and surrounded by the SN ejecta., Comment: 7 figures, 3 tables, submitted to ApJ

Millisecond magnetars are often invoked as the central engine of some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), specifically the ones showing a plateau phase. We argue that an apparent plateau phase may not be realized if the magnetic field of the nascent magnetar is in a transient rapid decay stage. Some GRBs that lack a clear plateau phase may also be hosting millisecond magnetars. We present an approximate analytical solution of the coupled set of equations describing the evolution of the angular velocity and the inclination angle between rotation and magnetic axis of a neutron star in the presence of a co-rotating plasma. We also show how the solution can be generalized to the case of evolving magnetic fields. We determine the evolution of the spin period, inclination angle, magnetic dipole moment and braking index of six putative magnetars associated with GRB 091018, GRB 070318, GRB 080430, GRB 090618, GRB 110715A, GRB 140206A through fitting, via Bayesian analysis, the X-ray afterglow light curves by using our recent model [\c{S}a\c{s}maz Mu\c{s} et al. 2019]. We find that within the first day following the formation of the millisecond magnetar, the inclination angle aligns rapidly, the magnetic dipole field may decay by a few times and the braking index varies by an order of magnitude., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; 9 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

GW170817 was the first ever joint detection of gravitational waves (GW) from a binary neutron star (BNS) merger with the detections of short $\gamma$-ray burst (SGRB) counterparts. Analysis of the multi-band afterglow observations of over more than a year revealed that the outflow from the merger end-product was consistent with structured relativistic jet models with the core of the jet narrowly collimated to half opening angles $\sim5$ deg. In this work, assuming all the BNS mergers produce Gaussian structured jets with properties as inferred for GW170817, we explore the prospects of joint detections of BNS mergers and prompt $\gamma-$ray emission, expected during the current and upcoming upgrades of LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detectors. We discuss three specific observational aspects: 1) the distribution of detected binary inclination angles 2) the distance reach and 3) the detection rates. Unlike GW-only detections, the joint detections are greatly restricted at large inclination angles, due to the structure of the jets. We find that at lower inclination angles (say below 20 deg), the distance reach as well as the detection rates of the joint detections are limited by GW detectability while at larger inclinations (say above 20 deg), they are limited by the $\gamma$-ray detectability., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. The event GW170817/GRB 170817A, discovered via the successful joint observation of its gravitational wave radiation and its multi-wavelength electromagnetic counterparts, was the first definite "smoking-gun" from the merger of two neutron stars (NSs). However, the remnant of the merger remains unknown. Piro et al. recently claimed that a low-significance X-ray variability in GRB 170817A. By systematically comparing the properties of variability in the afterglow of GRB 170817A and X-ray flares in GRB afterglows, we find that this X-ray variability seems to share similar statistical correlations with X-ray flares in GRB afterglows. We further investigate several possible merger product scenarios to see whether they can produce the observed X-ray variability in GRB 170817A. The first scenario invokes a stable magnetar as the central engine producing the later X-ray variability via differential rotation or fall-back accretion onto the NS. The second scenario invokes a black hole as the central engine with a fall-back accretion process. The final scenario is a central engine with a long-lived supra-massive NS. We find that the first two scenarios have difficulty producing the later X-ray variability, which requires either an impractical NS magnetic field or an extraordinarily large stellar envelope and an extremely long accretion timescale. However, the third scenario seems to be consistent with observations, and the later X-ray variability can be produced by the magnetosphere which is expelled following the collapse of the NS with a $B_p\in(3.6, 13.5)\times10^{13}$ G., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. It has been reported that some X-ray spectra of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows cannot be fitted by a simple power law. A blackbody component is added to precisely fit the thermal feature in these spectra. Alternatively, we propose that bremsstrahlung radiation can also be one possible mechanism to explain the thermal component of the GRB X-ray afterglow. In particular, we examine the X-ray afterglow of the ultra-long GRB 130925A in this paper. By our calculation, we find that the X-ray thermal component observed by both Swift-XRT and NuSTAR can be well explained by the bremsstrahlung radiation. Our results indicate that the GRBs with the bremsstrahlung emission in the X-ray afterglow could be born in a metal-rich and dusty environment., Comment: ApJ accepted

The nature of the shallow decay phase in the X-ray afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) is not yet clarified. We analyze the data of early X-ray afterglows of 26 GRBs triggered by Burst Alert Telescope onboard Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and subsequently detected by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and/or Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. It is found that 9 events (including 2 out of 3 very-high-energy gamma-ray events) have no shallow decay phase and that their X-ray afterglow light curves are well described by single power-law model except for the jet break at later epoch. The rest are fitted by double power-law model and have a break in the early epoch (around ks), however, 8 events (including a very-high-energy gamma-ray event) have the pre-break decay index larger than 0.7. We also analyze the data of well-sampled X-ray afterglows of GRBs without LAT detection, and compare their decay properties with those of high-energy and very-high-energy gamma-ray events. It is found that for the GeV/TeV bursts, the fraction of events whose X-ray afterglows are described by single power-law is significantly larger than those for non GeV/TeV GRBs. Even if the GeV/TeV GRBs have shallow decay phase, their decay slope tends to be steeper than non GeV/TeV bursts, that is, they have less noticeable shallow decay phase in the early X-ray afterglow. We present comprehensive multiwavelength radio to X-ray observations of GRB 181201A spanning from $\approx150$ s to $\approx163$ days after the burst, comprising the first joint ALMA-VLA-GMRT observations of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow. The radio and mm-band data reveal a distinct signature at $\approx3.9$ days, which we interpret as reverse shock (RS) emission. Our observations present the first time that a single radio-frequency spectral energy distribution can be decomposed directly into RS and forward shock (FS) components. We perform detailed modeling of the full multiwavelength data set, using Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling to construct the joint posterior density function of the underlying physical parameters describing the RS and FS synchrotron emission. We uncover and account for all degeneracies in the model parameters. The joint RS-FS modeling reveals a weakly magnetized ($\sigma\approx3\times10^{-3}$), mildly relativistic RS, from which we derive an initial bulk Lorentz factor of $\Gamma_0\approx103$ for the GRB jet. Our results support the hypothesis that low-density environments are conducive to the observability of RS emission. We compare our observations to other events with strong RS detections, and find a likely observational bias selecting for longer lasting, non-relativistic reverse shocks. In the crust of a neutron star, global torsional oscillations could occur in two elastic layers. The outer and inner layers are composed of spherical and cylindrical nuclei and of cylindrical holes (tubes) and spherical holes (bubbles), respectively, while between these two layers, a phase of slab-like (lasagna) nuclei with vanishingly small elasticity is sandwiched. In this work, we update systematic calculations of the eigenfrequencies of the fundamental oscillations in the inner layer by newly allowing for the presence of tubes. We find that the frequencies still depend strongly on the slope parameter of the nuclear symmetry energy, L, while being almost independent of the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter. We also find that the fundamental frequencies in the inner layer can become smaller than those in the outer layer because the tube phase has a relatively small shear modulus and at the same time dominates the inner layer in thickness. As a result, we can successfully explain not only the quasi-periodic oscillations originally discovered in the observed X-ray afterglow of the giant flare of SGR 1806–20 but also many others recently found by a Bayesian procedure.

The Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) 180720B is one of the brightest events detected by the Fermi satellite and the first GRB detected by the H.E.S.S. telescope above 100 GeV. We analyse the Fermi (GBM and LAT) and Swift (XRT and BAT) data and describe the evolution of the burst spectral energy distribution in the 0.5 keV - 10 GeV energy range over the first 500 seconds of emission. We reveal a smooth transition from the prompt phase, dominated by synchrotron emission in a moderately fast cooling regime, to the afterglow phase whose emission has been observed from the radio to the GeV energy range. The LAT (0.1 - 100 GeV) light curve initially rises ($F_{\rm LAT}\propto t^{2.4}$), peaks at $\sim$78 s, and falls steeply ($F_{\rm LAT}\propto t^{-2.2}$) afterwards. The peak, which we interpret as the onset of the fireball deceleration, allows us to estimate the bulk Lorentz factor $\Gamma_{0}\sim 150 \ (300)$ under the assumption of a wind-like (homogeneous) circum-burst medium density. We derive a flux upper limit in the LAT energy range at the time of H.E.S.S. detection, but this does not allow us to unveil the nature of the high energy component observed by H.E.S.S. We fit the prompt spectrum with a physical model of synchrotron emission from a non-thermal population of electrons. The 0 - 35 s spectrum after its $E F(E)$ peak (at 1 - 2 MeV) is a steep power law extending to hundreds of MeV. We derive a steep slope of the injected electron energy distribution $N(\gamma)\propto \gamma^{-5}$. Detections of gravitational waves (GWs) may soon uncover the signal from the coalescence of a black hole - neutron star (BHNS) binary, that is expected to be accompanied by an electromagnetic (EM) signal. In this paper, we present a composite semi-analytical model to predict the properties of the expected EM counterpart from BHNS mergers, focusing on the kilonova emission and on the gamma-ray burst afterglow. Four main parameters rule the properties of the EM emission: the NS mass $M_\mathrm{NS}$, its tidal deformability $\Lambda_\mathrm{NS}$, the BH mass and spin. Only for certain combinations of these parameters an EM counterpart is produced. Here we explore the parameter space, and construct light curves, analysing the dependence of the EM emission on the NS mass and tidal deformability. Exploring the NS parameter space limiting to $M_\mathrm{NS}-\Lambda_\mathrm{NS}$ pairs described by a physically motivated equations of state (EoS), we find that the brightest EM counterparts are produced in binaries with low mass NSs (fixing the BH properties and the EoS). Using constraints on the NS EoS from GW170817, our modeling shows that the emission falls in a narrow range of absolute magnitudes. Within the range of explored parameters, light curves and peak times are not dissimilar to those from NSNS mergers, except in the B band. The lack of an hyper/supra-massive NS in BHNS coalescences causes a dimming of the blue kilonova emission in absence of the neutrino interaction with the ejecta., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures. We present a study of 21 dark gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies, predominantly using X-ray afterglows obtained with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory (CXO) to precisely locate the burst in deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of the burst region. The host galaxies are well-detected in F160W in all but one case and in F606W imaging in approx 60 per cent of cases. We measure magnitudes and perform a morphological analysis of each galaxy. The asymmetry, concentration and ellipticity of the dark burst hosts are compared against the host galaxies of optically bright GRBs. In agreement with other studies, we find that dark GRB hosts are redder and more luminous than the bulk of the GRB host population. The distribution of projected spatial offsets for dark GRBs from their host galaxy centroids is comparable to that of optically-bright bursts. The dark GRB hosts are physically larger, more massive and redder, but are morphologically similar to the hosts of bright GRBs in terms of concentration and asymmetry. Our analysis constrains the fraction of high redshift (z greater than 5) GRBs in the sample to approx 14 per cent, implying an upper limit for the whole long-GRB population of less than 4.4 per cent. If dust is the primary cause of afterglow darkening amongst dark GRBs, the measured extinction may require a clumpy dust component in order to explain the observed offset and ellipticity distributions., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The discovery of GW170817, the merger of a binary neutron star (NS) triggered by a gravitational wave detection by LIGO and Virgo, has opened a new window of exploration in the physics of NSs and their cosmological role. Among the important quantities to measure are the mass and velocity of the ejecta produced by the tidally disrupted NSs and the delay - if any - between the merger and the launching of a relativistic jet. These encode information on the equation of state of the NS, the nature of the merger remnant, and the jet launching mechanism, as well as yielding an estimate of the mass available for r-process nucleosynthesis. Here we derive analytic estimates for the structure of jets expanding in environments with different density, velocity, and radial extent. We compute the jet-cocoon structure and the properties of the broadband afterglow emission as a function of the ejecta mass, velocity, and time delay between merger and launch of the jet. We show that modeling of the afterglow light curve can constrain the ejecta properties and, in turn, the physics of neutron density matter. Our results increase the interpretative power of electromagnetic observations by allowing for a direct connection with the merger physics., Comment: ApJ in press. We report the first detection of radio polarization of a GRB afterglow with the first intensive combined use of telescopes in the millimeter and submillimeter ranges for GRB171205A. The linear polarization degree in the millimeter band at the sub-percent level ($0.27 \pm 0.04\%$) is lower than those observed in late-time optical afterglows (weighted average of $\sim 1\%$). The Faraday depolarization by non-accelerated, cool electrons in the shocked region is one of possible mechanisms for the low value. In this scenario, larger total energy by a factor of $\sim 10$ than ordinary estimate without considering non-accelerated electrons is required. The polarization position angle varies by at least 20 degrees across the millimeter band, which is not inconsistent with this scenario. This result indicates that polarimetry in the millimeter and submillimeter ranges is a unique tool for investigating GRB energetics, and coincident observations with multiple frequencies or bands would provide more accurate measurements of the non-accelerated electron fraction., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters; 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

GRB 190114C is an unusual gamma-ray burst (GRB) due to its detection at sub-$TeV$ energies by MAGIC, seen at redshift z = 0.42. This burst is one of the brightest GRB detected by \fermi. A joint GBM-LAT analysis of the prompt emission reveals the presence of sub-$GeV$ spectral cutoff when the LAT \emph{low-energy events} (LLE) data is also examined. A similar high-energy cutoff was likewise reported in GRB 160509A and GRB 100724B earlier, as well as handful of other sources. The cutoff can be explained by the intrinsic opacity due to pair production within the emitting region. GRB 190114C shows a transition from non-thermal to a quasi-thermal-like spectrum and a radiation component that can be attributed to afterglow. Based on spectral analysis, we constrain the site of the prompt emission and $Lorentz$ factor. Knowing that sub-$TeV$ photons are detected in MAGIC, we perceive that the observed spectrum is indeed an overlap from two emission sites, where the emission observed in \fermi is more consistent with prompt emission produced via photospheric dissipation along with a concurrent component from the external shock., Comment: Revised and accepted for publication in the ApJ

For on-axis typical short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs), the forward shock emission is usually so bright that renders the identification of kilonovae (also known as macronovae) in the early afterglow ($t, 20 pages, 5 figures, published in Nature Astronomy

Gamma-ray burst afterglows arise from relativistic collisionless shocks in which the postshock tangled magnetic field $\vec{B}$ is produced by the two-stream and/or Weibel instabilities on plasma skin-depth scales $(c/\omega_p)$. The field is expected to be oriented predominantly within the shock plane ($B_{\perp}$; transverse to the shock normal, $\hat{n}_{\rm{sh}}$), and is often approximated to be completely within it ($B_\parallel\equiv\hat{n}_{\rm{sh}}\,\cdot\,\vec{B}=0$). Current 2D/3D particle-in-cell simulations are limited to short timescales and box sizes $\lesssim10^4(c/\omega_p)\ll R/\Gamma_{\rm{sh}}$ much smaller than the shocked region's comoving width, and cannot probe the asymptotic downstream $\vec{B}$ structure.
