At XP2017 in Köln, a panel was convened to discuss the classic 1987 IEEE Software paper by Frederick P. Brooks, "No Silver Bullet: Essence and Accidents in Software Engineering." The ideas presented in his paper have influenced several generations of software developers. Brooks emphasized the notions of essential complexity and accidental complexity, and he offered suggestions for promising approaches to software development. While his approaches are linked to what we now recognize as "agile practices," panelists offered an implicit caveat that they must be done with discipline to avoid increased accidental complexity. Panelists also observed that agile development itself is not a "silver bullet".

In 2001, CHI featured an unusual panel session: Marketing people were actually invited to come to CHI to explain what they did and why it was important to the objectives of SIGCHI. Boyd de Groot, Peter Eikelboom, and Florian Egger organized the session in which I was privileged to participate. As they remarked about how extraordinary it was to have dedicated marketing professionals at CHI, especially in presenter roles, the comments being exchanged among CHI professionals gave me the feeling that I was in a "Dilbert" comic strip, listening to the amusing, outrageous jibes of those characters.

The RESER workshop provides a venue in which empirical software engineering researchers can discuss the theoretical foundations and methods of replication, as well as present the results of specific replicated studies. In 2011, the workshop co-located with the International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM) in Banff, Alberta, Canada. In addition to several outstanding paper sessions, highlights of the 2011 workshop included a keynote address by Dr. Victor R. Basili, in which he addressed the question, "What's so hard about replication of software engineering experiments?" The workshop also featured a joint replication panel session discussing the first cooperative joint replication ever conducted in empirical software engineering research and a planning session for next year's joint replication project addressing Conway's Law.

The nature of the emerging field of web-based simulation is examined in terms of its relationship to the fundamental aspects of simulation research and practice. The presentation, assuming a form of debate, is based on a panel session held at the first International Conference on Web-Based Modeling and Simulation, which was sponsored by the Society for Computer Simulation during 11-14 January 1998 in San Diego, California. While no clear “winner” is evident in this debate, the issues raised here certainly merit ongoing attention and contemplation.

This report describes a panel session on HCI Education held at the HCI'95 Conference. During the debate, expert views were expressed about many of the key issues affecting HCI teachers today, including: how can educators cope with the flood of new HCI ideas? should HCI be fully integrated into software engineering courses or taught in specialist modules? what are the core elements of HCI that all students should learn? there are perceived cultural differences in HCI teaching in the UK, USA and Scandinavia --- are these differences real and are they important? should we be sharing educational materials? can HCI design be taught or are creative designers born not bred?

In today's business world, you need learning management system (LMS) software that's simple enough to be useful and complex enough to be relevant. During the Learning Experts' panel session at Plateau Insights, the European user group conference, respected experts in the learning technologies sphere agreed that the advent of social learning is far from causing the death of the LMS.

To take full advantage of the promise of ubiquitous computing requires the use of location information, yet people should have control over who may know their whereabouts. We present an architecture that achieves these goals for an interesting set of applications. Personal information is managed by User Agents, and a partially decentralized Location Query Service is used to facilitate location-based operations. This architecture gives users primary control over their location information, at the cost of making more expensive certain queries, such as those wherein location and identity closely interact. We also discuss various extensions to our architecture that offer users additional trade-offs between privacy and efficiency. Finally, we report some measurements of the unextended system in operation, focusing on how well the system is actually able to track people. Our system uses two kinds of location information, which turn out to provide partial and complementary coverage.

The Second International Workshop on Games and Software Engineering (GAS 2012) was held in June 2012, collocated with ICSE 2012 in Zurich, Switzerland. GAS 2012 explores issues that crosscut the software engineering and the game engineering communities. Advances in game engineering techniques can be adopted by the software engineering community to develop more engaging applications across diverse domains: education; healthcare; fitness; sustainable activities (e.g., recycling awareness); and so on. Successful computer games feature a property that is not always found in traditional software: they are highly engaging. Engaging games enthrall players and result in users willing to spend increasing amounts of time and money playing them. Nine submissions were accepted for the workshop, which also featured a panel session and an informal poster session.

The purpose of this panel is to introduce the Impact Project to the community, and to engage the community in a broad ranging discussion of the project's goals, approaches, and methods. Some of the project's early findings and directions will be presented.

This panel will discuss the background leading to the decision to develop a Draft Criteria for accreditation of Information Systems programs, the current status of the Draft Criteria, feedback received from presentations at a number of conferences and on a web-based survey, and a brief description of future plans for the project. Time will be allotted for questions from the audience.

Over a period of thirty years there have been many curriculum reforms in the Undergraduate Computer Science curriculum. The ACM/IEEE-CS task force is currently working on the Curriculum 2001. In this struggle to define and develop this dynamic field of computer science, we have the opportunity to identify the foundations and related concepts of mathematics we would like to see in the new CS curriculum and introduce these in CS1 and CS2. Many standard topics of discrete mathematics can encourage the use of mathematical thinking when taught along with the CS courses. The more complex foundations and other theoretical topics may be introduced later in the curriculum. This session will present some of the views and examples in this direction. Our goal is not to eliminate the need of discrete math but to integrate it into the basics of CS so that the student will experience mathematical reasoning in the early stages of the development of CS topics. Currently discrete math is taught as one of the early math requirements and many students do not see the relationship between the programming concepts and these mathematical concepts. An early blend of these ideas of will provide a richer experience to CS majors and the new topics can be learned more quickly if the underlying theoretical concepts are well understood. The programming languages of choice can be introduced in separate laboratory components taken parallel to CS1 and CS2. We hope that we all can agree that CS is not just programming and we have a new discipline that must develop its basic theory rather than depending on other disciplines to do it for us. Someday, the courses we know now as CS1 and CS2 maybe known as University Computing I and II as we now have in some of the other sciences.

A survey of minicomputer data base management systems was conducted to determine the current state of the industry. The results of the survey are highlighted in this paper to provide a broad view of the features of commercially available mini-data base systems. Among the topics presented are hardware requirements, software implementation, data independence, binding, integrity, privacy controls, installation base, availability, and user considerations. In addition, the relationship between the growth of the minicomputer market and mini-DBMS market in the second half of the 70's is emphasized.

Psychological research methods have been used with increasing frequency in work on computer-human interaction. Judging from the state of the literature and from remarks heard in the halls at conferences such as this, the utility and appropriate roles of such methods are not yet clear. Panel members, who are all research psychologists working on issues related to human use of computers, will present a variety of contrasting views on how to go about such research, and on its proper goals. John Gould will describe two different but complimentary approaches, applied research on general design issues, and formative human factors participation in development. John Anderson will discuss the use of formal models of human cognition. Phil Barnard will consider the role of applied research in the discovery of underlying principles to guide design. Tom Landauer will propose that psychological research can be the basis for invention of new “;cognitive tools”. Short synopses of the positions they will take e given below. Panel members hope that the audience will join them in bringing out important differences between the various approaches and methods and arguing their absolute and relative merits.

Good morning. My name is Linnea Cook from Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. This session is a panel session on hardware and software solutions for scientific visualization that are being pursued at some of the large research laboratories in the United States. This panel originated because I saw and other people at Los Alamos saw that we were pursuing different avenues of -- and quite vehemently -- pursuing different avenues of meeting our graphics needs. In Livermore in particular there was real strife for several years over graphics terminals versus graphics workstations. I thought that other people may benefit from seeing why people are pursuing some of the solutions that they are.Today there are five of us who are going to discuss a little bit about what the environment is that we work in and what we're each doing to solve the graphic needs in our environments, and also why we think our solution is the best.Each panelist is going to and make an eight to 10 minute statement to that effect. I will give each panelist a complete introduction when they get up to speak.I suppose I should tell you a little bit about who I am before we get started. My background is in math and computer science. I have a BS/MS in that, and I am currently a group leader for one of the computer science groups that supports one of our large physics divisions at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. Part of the work we do is to support our physicists with good computer graphics and I have been leading the graphics workstation effort for my group.Our first panelist to speak is Gordon Bancroft. He is from NASA Ames and he has a BS in aeronautics. He's been at NASA for six years, and is currently task manager of workstation applications, as part of the fluid dynamics division. He's involved in the creation of applications for visualization of fluid dynamic simulation. He has been involved in some of the procurement that NASA has been doing. Gordon.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. We'll begin the panel session -- HDTV Computer Graphics. I am Koichi Omura at Osaka Municipal University. I am the chair of this panel. At first I'd like to thank SIGGRAPH, giving us the opportunity speaking today.The first presentation is by Mr. Ryou Mochizuki. He is the controller of NHK Engineering Service Corporation. He will discuss the compact disc application of HDTV, and after that he will present the brief introduction of HDTV.

This panel session followed the format announced by SIGSAM Chairman Carl Engelman in the announcement published in SIGSAM Bulletin No. 10 (October 1968). Carl gave a brief (five or ten minutes) introduction to the subject and introduced Professor Joel Moses (M. I. T.). Joel presented an excellent exposition of the recent research accomplishments of the other panel members, synthesizing their work into a single large comprehensible picture. His presentation was greatly enhanced by a series of 27 carefully prepared slides containing critical examples and basic formulas, and was certainly the feature of the show. A panel discussion followed, with some audience participation. Panel members were Dr. W. S. Brown (Bell Telephone Laboratories), Professor B. F. Caviness (Duke University), Dr. Daniel Richardson and Dr. R. H. Risch (IBM).
