Aims: Carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199) is a standard tumor marker, and recent studies have found elevated in CA199 levels in patients with diabetes. However, there is no systematic measurement and comparison of serum CA199 levels in patients with diabetes and cancer. Here, a detailed description of the changes in serum CA199 levels in patients with type 2 diabetes and various cancers was explored. Methods: A total of 5,641 participants were screened for clinical laboratory test results of serum CA199 levels over the past three years (2020–2023). This study included 2,464 healthy controls, 688 patients with type 2 diabetes, and 2,489 patients with 16 different types of cancer. Each type of cancer had more than 30 independent serum CA199 level test results. The serum CA199 levels were compared between cancer groups, type 2 diabetes patients, and healthy controls. Additionally, the CA199 levels of cancer patients were compared with those of patients with type 2 diabetes. Results: The serum CA199 levels of esophagus cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, rectum cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, liver cancer, gastric cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, intracranial tumors, and nasopharyngeal laryngeal cancer were found to be elevated compared to healthy controls (P < 0.01). In addition, the serum CA199 levels of patients with type 2 diabetes were also significantly elevated compared to healthy controls (P < 0.01). Moreover, the degree of elevation in serum CA199 levels in patients with type 2 diabetes was not significantly different from that observed in some types of cancer, such as esophagus cancer (P = 0.163), breast cancer (P = 0.927), prostate cancer (P = 1.000), bladder cancer (P = 0.406), Lymphoma (P = 0.975), thyroid cancer (P = 1.000), intracranial tumors (P = 0.161), nasopharyngeal and laryngeal cancer (P = 1.000). Conclusions: Serum CA199 levels also increase in type 2 diabetes, and the magnitude of the increase is similar to that seen in some cancers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) represents one of the principal tumors of the head and neck. Human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) are considered risk factors for the development and the clinical prognosis of LSCC. High levels of p16INK4a are suggested as a surrogate marker of HPV or EBV infection in some head and neck tumors but in LSCC is still controversial. Furthermore, pRb expression may be considered an additional biomarker but it has not been clearly defined. This work aimed to compare the expression of pRb and p16INK4a as possible biomarkers in tumor tissues with and without infection by EBV or different genotypes of HPV from patients with LSCC. Methods: Tumor samples from 103 patients with LSCC were previously investigated for the presence and genotypes of HPV using the INNO-LiPA line probe assay and for the infection of EBV by qPCR. p16 INK4a and pRb expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Results: Of the 103 tumor samples, expression of p16INK4a was positive in 55 (53.4%) and of this, 32 (56.1%) were positive for HPV whereas 11 (39.3%) were EBV positive but both without a significantly difference (p > 0.05). pRb expression was positive in 78 (75.7%) and a higher frequency of this expression was observed in HPV negative samples (87.0%) (p = 0.021) and in high-risk HPV negative samples (85.2%) (p = 0.010). No difference was observed when comparing pRb expression and EBV infection status (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our results support the suggestion that p16INK4a is not a reliable surrogate marker for identifying HPV or EBV infection in LSCC. On the other hand, most of our samples had pRb expression, which was more frequent in tumors without HPV, suggesting that pRb could indicate HPV negativity. However, more studies with a larger number of cases are required, including controls without LSCC and evaluating other molecular markers to determine the real role of p16INK4a and pRb in LSCC. Background: This study used the revised nursing outcomes classification (NOC) outlined in our previous study, "Core nursing outcomes for otorhinolaryngology head-neck," for telephone follow-up of patients who had laryngeal carcinoma surgery in China. This randomized controlled trial aimed to compare nurse-led telephone follow-up according to the revised NOC with traditional telephone follow-up. Methods: A total of 100 postoperative patients were recruited from March 2018‒March 2020. Patients were randomly assigned to nurse-led telephone follow-up groups as either revised NOC follow-up (n = 51) or traditional follow-up (n = 49). The investigated outcomes included nursing outcomes, quality of life, and self-care abilities. Results: The baseline characteristics of patients were well balanced. We noted that improvements in nursing outcomes in the intervention group were significantly better than for those in the control group (P = 0.018), primarily regarding psychosocial health (P < 0.001) and health knowledge and behavior (P < 0.001). Moreover, patient outcomes in the intervention group were associated with greater improvements in quality of life than those in the control group (P < 0.001), especially for social conditions (P < 0.001), emotional health (P < 0.001), functional status (P < 0.001), and additional attention (P = 0.001). Finally, compared with the control group, significant improvements were observed in self-care abilities in the intervention group (P = 0.002), mainly regarding general self-care abilities (P = 0.016) and development self-care abilities (P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study found that nurse-led telephone follow-up according to the revised NOC improved nursing outcomes, quality of life, and self-care abilities. Trial registration: ChiCTR2100045941. Background: The core nursing outcomes for laryngeal carcinoma in China needed further screening and revision. This study aimed to evaluate and revise a questionnaire according to the "Core Nursing Outcomes for Otorhinolaryngology Head-Neck" of the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC, 5th Edition), and determine suitable postoperative nursing outcomes for patients with laryngeal carcinoma in China. Methods: The commonly used postoperative nursing outcomes for laryngeal carcinoma were screened using a questionnaire given to 93 nurses. An initial expert consultation questionnaire was constructed to discuss the indicators for each nursing outcome. A total of 20 experts were identified using the Delphi method, and their recommendations and revisions on the selected nursing outcomes were collected. Results: A total of 14 postoperative core nursing outcomes and 69 indicators were identified for postoperative patients with laryngeal carcinoma, which are subordinate to 4 domains of the NOC: "Physiologic Health", "Psychosocial Health", "Health Knowledge & Behavior", and "Perceived Health". Conclusions: The screening and revision of the NOC outcomes and indicators of the Delphi method could be applied to assess the effect of nursing intervention and the quality of the nursing service in China. Background: To facilitate priority-setting in health policymaking, we compiled the best available information to estimate the adult mortality (>30 years) burden attributable to 13 metabolic, lifestyle, infectious, and environmental risk factors in Taiwan. Methods: We obtained data on risk factor exposure from nationally representative health surveys, cause-specific mortality from the National Death Registry, and relative risks from epidemiological studies and meta-analyses. We applied the comparative risk assessment framework to estimate mortality burden attributable to individual risk factors or risk factor clusters. Results: In 2009, high blood glucose accounted for 14,900 deaths (95% UI: 11,850-17,960), or 10.4% of all deaths in that year. It was followed by tobacco smoking (13,340 deaths, 95% UI: 10,330-16,450), high blood pressure (11,190 deaths, 95% UI: 8,190-14,190), ambient particulate matter pollution (8,600 deaths, 95% UI: 7,370-9,840), and dietary risks (high sodium intake and low intake of fruits and vegetables, 7,890 deaths, 95% UI: 5,970-9,810). Overweight-obesity and physical inactivity accounted for 7,620 deaths (95% UI: 6,040-9,190), and 7,400 deaths (95% UI: 6,670-8,130), respectively. The cardiometabolic risk factors of high blood pressure, high blood glucose, high cholesterol, and overweight-obesity jointly accounted for 12,120 deaths (95% UI: 11,220-13,020) from cardiovascular diseases. For domestic risk factors, infections from hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) were responsible for 6,300 deaths (95% UI: 5,610-6,980) and 3,170 deaths (95% UI: 1,860-4,490), respectively, and betel nut use was associated with 1,780 deaths from oral, laryngeal, and esophageal cancer (95% UI: 1,190-2,360). The leading risk factors for years of life lost were similar, but the impact of tobacco smoking and alcohol use became larger because the attributable deaths from these risk factors occurred among young adults aged less than 60 years. Conclusions: High blood glucose, tobacco smoking, and high blood pressure are the major risk factors for deaths from diseases and injuries among Taiwanese adults. Background: Although Helicobacter Pylori (HP) was detected in some cases of chronic laryngitis, the results were not confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). By this time, it has not been found in laryngeal lesions by in house PCR, the most sensitive method for detecting the genome tracks. Regarding the previous results and also few numbers of studies about the presence of HP in benign laryngeal lesions, specifically by PCR, we aimed to investigate the presence of HP in benign laryngeal lesions by in-house PCR.Methods: The samples were taken from 55 patients with benign laryngeal lesions and frozen in -20°C. One milliliter (ml) of lysis buffer was added to 100 mg (mg) of each sample and the tube was placed in 56°C overnight.Then DNA extraction was carried out.Results: To find HP DNA, in-house PCR was performed that revealed 5 positive results among 55 patients with benign laryngeal lesions. Of them, 3 were polyp, 1 was nodule and 1 was papilloma.Conclusion: Although the number of positive results was not a lot in this study, it was in contrast with previous studies which could not find any HP tracks in benign laryngeal lesions by other methods. More studies about the prevalence of HP in benign laryngeal lesions improve judging about the effect of this infection on benign laryngeal lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
