Background: An open fracture of the tibia is one of the most common and dangerous type of open fractures. In the management of these injuries, the primary focus is on reducing the infection rate, as this is crucial for achieving the best clinical outcomes. This study aims to explore how provisional external fixation duration influences the rates of infection and union in open tibial shaft fractures. Methods: A retrospective study with a total of 55 patients who received temporary external fixation. Groups A (less than 12 days), B (12–24), C (25–36), and D (more than 36) were the four groups into which they were split according to the conversion time. Results: 12.8%, 18.2%, 50%, and 100% of the infections were found in Groups A, B, C, and D, respectively. Significant (P < 0.05) differences were found throughout the four groups. The conversion time from external to definitive fixation was found to have a relationship with the occurrence of an infection (P = 0.004). A higher prevalence of infection was observed over time. However, no association was observed between infection and antibiotic duration or initial debridement time (P = 0.689 and P = 0.963, respectively). Conclusions: Results of this study demonstrate that the likelihood of infection increases when the change from external fixation to definitive internal fixation is delayed. Background: Antibiotics are a key commodity for global health, and inadequate access is a major contributor to global mortality. COVID-19 has refocused attention on global pharmaceutical value chains and the need for sustainable and secure production and supply of key products, including antibiotics. Production of antibiotics and their active pharmaceutical ingredients is capital- and technology-intensive, however, and value chains are dominated by a limited number of countries. China is known to be one of the largest producers, but its position in global value chains has not previously been analyzed. This is important for discussions about equitable and resilient global supplies, including through global instruments such as the pandemic treaty. Methods: This study utilizes data from the International Trade Center database to analyze global and Chinese export trade patterns in the antibiotic industry from 2002 to 2021, along with trends in comparative advantage. The antibiotic trade data included in this study covers different antibiotic products, including some tuberculosis drugs, while other types of antimicrobial drugs (such as antivirals, antiparasitics) are excluded. Results: The export share of antibiotic ingredients from China increased from 9.0% in 2002 to 44.5% in 2021. China is the largest exporter of antibiotic ingredients (with a strong comparative advantage). Additionally, the export share of antibiotic medicines increased from 0.5% in 2002 to 6.5% in 2021, making it the 7th largest exporter of antibiotic medicines (though with a comparative disadvantage). The proportion of antibiotic medicines in China's exports is gradually increasing, though the country's antibiotic industry is expected to remain in the upstream-to-midstream segments of the global supply chain in the short term. China's export market for antibiotic medicines is fragmented, focusing on developing countries, though European (17.9% in 2021) and North American markets (13.1% in 2021) are increasing in importance. China's weight in global antibiotic exports, particularly of antibiotic ingredients, creates dependencies for countries reliant on China, and for Chinese companies reliant on certain overseas markets. Conclusions: China is central to global antibiotic manufacturing. Policies promoting the reshaping of global supply chains and reshoring of critical medicines will likely create challenges for Chinese exporters, though are unlikely to alter the global supply structure in the short term. This has implications for Chinese policymakers, including strengthening innovation, quality, international competitiveness, and diversifying markets. Equally, China's huge manufacturing capability, cost advantages, and rapid scientific and technological progress, make the country an inevitable and important part of future arrangements to ensure equitable global antibiotic access. Mentha haplocalyx Briq. (M. haplocalyx), a notable member of the Lamiaceae family, occupies a significant role in the realm of health foods and botanical medicines. Traditionally, it has been employed to address various diseases, including colds, coughs, fever, indigestion, asthma, and influenza. Recent phytochemical investigations have identified the presence of terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, anthraquinones, alkanes, and polysaccharides in M. haplocalyx, with terpenoids being the primary bioactive constituents. Notably, both in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated its diverse health benefits, such as neuroprotective, anti-asthmatic, anti-inflammatory, gut health improvement, hypoglycemic, anti-aging, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant effects. Additionally, M. haplocalyx is a rich source of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins, further underscoring its nutritional value. A thorough literature review was conducted using databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) to consolidate existing knowledge on M. haplocalyx. This review synthesizes recent advancements in the botany, traditional uses, nutritional value, phytochemistry, health benefits, and research on the edible uses of M. haplocalyx. Furthermore, the commercial potential and future research opportunities for M. haplocalyx are briefly explored, with the goal of fostering continued interest in this multifunctional plant and inspiring future research and commercial endeavors. Background: Nocardiosis is an opportunistic infection that has a low prevalence rate, its clinical manifestations are atypical and can be easily misdiagnosed as other diseases. The correct diagnosis and treatment are frequently delayed by various factors. In this case report, we present a pediatric patient with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders who developed Nocardia farcinica pneumonia complicated by pneumocystis jiroveci infection. Case presentation: An 8-year-old girl with chest pain and cough was admitted to the hospital. She suffered from Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders and had been taking methylprednisolone and tacrolimus orally for 3 years. She was admitted to the hospital for tests and was diagnosed with acute pneumonia. Despite empiric antibiotic treatment, her condition gradually worsened. Respiratory distress developed, and she needed to use a ventilator for breathing. The symptoms she exhibited led us to suspect the presence of a tumor. Etiological tests later confirmed the co-infection of Nocardia farcinica and Pneumocystis jiroveci. After treatment, the child's lung infection eventually resolved. Conclusion: The Nocardia bacteria and Pneumocystis jiroveci are widely distributed in the environment, possess the capability of systemic dissemination, and exhibit significant resistance to specific treatments. Immunotherapy is a novel treatment approach for malignant tumors, which has opened a new journey of anti-tumor therapy. Although some patients will show a positive response to immunotherapy, unfortunately, most patients and cancer types do not achieve an ideal response to immunotherapy. Therefore, it is urgent to search for the pathogenesis of sensitized immunotherapy. This review indicates that Fusobacterium nucleatum, Coprobacillus cateniformis, Akkermansia muciniphila, Bifidobacterium, among others, as well as intestinal microbial metabolites are closely associated with resistance to anti-tumor immunotherapy. While natural products of pectin, inulin, jujube, anthocyanins, ginseng polysaccharides, diosgenin, camu-camu, and Inonotus hispidus (Bull).Fr. P. Karst, Icariside I, Safflower yellow, Ganoderma lucidum, and Ginsenoside Rk3, and other Chinese native medicinal compound prescriptions to boost their efficacy of anti-tumor immunotherapy through the regulation of microbiota and microbiota metabolites. However, current research mainly focuses on intestinal, liver, and lung cancer. In the future, natural products could be a viable option for treating malignant tumors, such as pancreatic, esophageal, and gastric malignancies, via sensitizing immunotherapy. Besides, the application characteristics of different types, sources and efficacy of natural products in different immune resistance scenarios also need to be further clarified through the development of future immunotherapy-related studies. Carbapenem resistance among bacteria, especially Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii, constitutes a dreadful threat to public health all over the world that requires developing new medications urgently. Carbapenem resistance emerges as a serious problem as this class is used as a last-line option to clear the multidrug-resistant bacteria. Arthrospira maxima (Spirulina) is a well-known cyanobacterium used as a food supplement as it is rich in protein, essential minerals and vitamins and previous studies showed it may have some antimicrobial activity against different organisms. Biosynthesized (green) zinc oxide nanoparticles have been investigated by several researchers as antibacterials because of their safety in health. Nanotechnology holds immense promise in revolutionising healthcare, offering unprecedented opportunities in diagnostics, drug delivery, cancer therapy, and combating infectious diseases. This review explores the multifaceted landscape of nanotechnology in healthcare while addressing the critical aspects of safety and environmental risks associated with its widespread application. Beginning with an introduction to the integration of nanotechnology in healthcare, we first delved into its categorisation and various materials employed, setting the stage for a comprehensive understanding of its potential. We then proceeded to elucidate the diverse healthcare applications of nanotechnology, spanning medical diagnostics, tissue engineering, targeted drug delivery, gene delivery, cancer therapy, and the development of antimicrobial agents. The discussion extended to the current situation surrounding the clinical translation and commercialisation of these cutting-edge technologies, focusing on the nanotechnology-based healthcare products that have been approved globally to date. We also discussed the safety considerations of nanomaterials, both in terms of human health and environmental impact. We presented the in vivo health risks associated with nanomaterial exposure, in relation with transport mechanisms, oxidative stress, and physical interactions. Moreover, we highlighted the environmental risks, acknowledging the potential implications on ecosystems and biodiversity. Lastly, we strived to offer insights into the current regulatory landscape governing nanotechnology in healthcare across different regions globally. By synthesising these diverse perspectives, we underscore the imperative of balancing innovation with safety and environmental stewardship, while charting a path forward for the responsible integration of nanotechnology in healthcare. Background: Melaleuca species (family Myrtaceae) are characterized by their wide-ranging applications as antimicrobials and in skin-related conditions. Herein, we estimated the volatile profile and biological significance of M. rugulosa (Link) leaves for the first time supported by a dereplication protocol. Materials and methods: Volatile components were extracted using hydrodistillation (HD), supercritical fluid (SF), and headspace (HS) techniques and identified using GC/MS. The variations among the three extracts were assessed using principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). The extracted volatiles were tested for radical scavenging activity, anti-aging, and anti-hyperpigmentation potential. Finally, disc diffusion and broth microdilution assays were implemented to explore the antibacterial capacity against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Results: The yield of the SF technique (0.8%) was three times higher than HD. GC/MS analysis revealed that the oxygenated compounds are the most proponents in the three extracts being 95.93% (HD), 80.94% (HS), and 48.4% (SF). Moreover, eucalyptol (1,8-cineol) represents the major component in the HD-EO (89.60%) and HS (73.13%) volatiles, while dl-α-tocopherol (16.27%) and α-terpineol (11.89%) represent the highest percentage in SF extract. Regarding the bioactivity profile, the HD-EO and SF-extract showed antioxidant potential in terms of oxygen radical absorbance capacity, and β- carotene assays, while exerting weak activity towards DPPH. In addition, they displayed potent anti-elastase and moderate anti-collagenase activities. The HD-EO exhibited potent anti-tyrosinase activity, while the SF extract showed a moderate level compared to tested controls. OPLS-DA and dereplication studies predicted that the selective antibacterial activity of HD-EO to S. aureus was related to eucalyptol, while SF extract to C. perfringens was related to α-tocopherol. Conclusions: M. rugulosa leaves are considered a vital source of bioactive volatile components that are promoted for controlling skin aging and infection. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the antimicrobial effectiveness of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) incorporated to different orthodontic bonding systems. Additionally, the review investigated the impact of AgNPs on the bonding properties of these materials. The hypothesis posed that the addition of AgNPs would enhance the antimicrobial efficacy of orthodontic bonding systems while maintaining their bonding properties. The systematic review employed a PICO-based search strategy, targeting in vitro studies focusing on the integration of nano silver particles into orthodontic bonding systems with potential antimicrobial activity. The intervention involved the use of nano silver in orthodontic bonding systems, with a comparison to systems lacking nano silver. The primary outcomes assessed were antimicrobial activity and shear bond strength (SBS). The search process, conducted without publication date restrictions, yielded 551 potential articles: 34 from PubMed, 360 from PubMed Central, 42 from Embase, 54 from Scopus, and 61 from Web of Science. Ultimately, a qualitative synthesis was conducted on 13 papers. The PRISMA diagram, visually represented the search strategy, screening process, and inclusion criteria. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO CRD42023487656 to enhance transparency and adherence to systematic review guidelines. Quality assessment of the included studies was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, revealing that the 13 articles meeting the inclusion criteria demonstrated a high level of evidence. Seven studies were included in the meta-analysis regarding shear bond strength. In summary, the synthesized findings from these studies strongly underscore the promising potential of orthodontic materials modified with AgNPs. These materials exhibit effective resistance against cariogenic bacteria without compromising bonding properties below clinical acceptability. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the clinical management and effectiveness of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in patients with pyogenic spinal infections. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 17 patients diagnosed with pyogenic spinal infections and treated at our institution between October 2022 and February 2024. The cohort included 8 males and 9 females, with a mean age of 63.59 ± 10.18 years (range: 41–71 years). The infections comprised 9 epidural abscesses, 6 intervertebral space infections, and 2 deep abscesses. All patients underwent open surgical procedures and mNGS-based bacterial identification using intraoperative pus or tissue specimens, in addition to conventional blood bacterial cultures. Clinical outcomes were assessed using CRP, PCT, WBC inflammatory markers, and VAS scores postoperatively. Results: All 17 patients with pyogenic spinal infections underwent open surgery and mNGS bacterial detection at our institution. Among the 17 patients, mNGS yielded positive results in 14 cases (82.4%), significantly higher than the 5.9% positivity rate of conventional bacterial cultures (p < 0.001). The mNGS test time was notably shorter than conventional cultures (1.0 vs. 5.88 days, p < 0.001). Postoperative antibiotic therapy was adjusted based on mNGS findings. There were significant reductions in postoperative VAS, WBC, PCT, and CRP values compared to preoperative levels (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing is effective in managing pyogenic spinal infections by facilitating rapid and sensitive detection of pathogens. One of the most significant medical advancements of the 20th century was the discovery of antibiotics, which continue to play a vital tool in the treatment and prevention of diseases in humans and animals. However, the imprudent use of antibiotics in all fields of One-Health and concerns about antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens have raised interest in antibiotic use restrictions on a global scale. Despite the failure of conventional antimicrobial agents, only about 15 new antibiotics have been introduced clinically since year 2000 to date. Moreover, there has been reports of resistance to some of these new antibiotics. This has necessitated a need to search for alternative strategies to combat antimicrobial resistant pathogens. Thus, this review compiles and evaluates the approaches—natural compounds, phage treatment, and nanomaterials—that are being used and/or suggested as the potential substitutes for conventional antibiotics. Background: Biofilm formation is an essential virulence factor that creates a highly protected growth mode for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) to survive in any hostile environment. Antibiotic sub-minimal inhibitory concentration (sub-MIC) may modulate the biofilm formation ability of bacterial pathogens, thereby affecting bacterial pathogenesis and infection outcomes. Intense antimicrobial therapy to treat biofilm-associated infections can control the pathogenic infection aggravation but cannot guarantee its complete eradication. Objective: This study aimed to assess the sub-MICs effect of 5 different antimicrobial classes on biofilm-forming capacity among Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates using three different biofilm quantitation techniques. Methods: In this study, the effects of 5 different antimicrobial agents, namely, azithromycin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, and imipenem, at sub-MICs of 12.5%, 25%, and 50% were tested on 5 different clinical isolates of S. aureus. The biofilms formed in the absence and presence of different antimicrobial sub-MICs were then assessed using the following three different techniques: the crystal violet (CV) staining method, the quantitative PCR (qPCR) method, and the spread plate method (SPM). Results: Biofilm formation was significantly induced in 64% of the tested conditions using the CV technique. On the other hand, the qPCR quantifying the total bacterial count and the SPM quantifying the viable bacterial count showed significant induction only in 24% and 17.3%, respectively (Fig. 1). The difference between CV and the other techniques indicates an increase in biofilm biomass without an increase in bacterial growth. As expected, sub-MICs did not reduce the viable cell count, as shown by the SPM. The CV staining method revealed that sub-MICs of imipenem and ciprofloxacin had the highest significance rate (80%) showing an inductive effect on the biofilm development. On the other hand, doxycycline, azithromycin, and gentamicin displayed lower significance rates of 73%, 53%, and 47%, respectively. Conclusion: Exposure to sub-MIC doses of antimicrobial agents induces the biofilm-forming capacity of S. aureus via increasing the total biomass without significantly affecting the bacterial growth of viable count. Background: Effective endodontic treatment requires the use of a root canal sealer with optimal properties to ensure a hermetic seal, prevent reinfection, and promote healing. Despite the availability of various sealers, a standardized evaluation system still needs to be improved. Objectives: To develop a Clinical Utility Index (CUI) that systematically evaluates and ranks root canal sealers based on their sealing ability, antimicrobial efficacy, flow rate, and solubility. Methods: The CUI was developed through a structured process involving expert identification, panel discussions, and the establishment of scoring criteria. Five sealers were evaluated (Sealers A, B, C, D, and E). Mean values for the core properties were calculated, and sealers were ranked accordingly. The total CUI for each sealer was computed based on the assigned scores for each property. Results: Sealer B achieved the highest CUI at 95%, demonstrating superior performance across all core properties. Sealer C followed with a CUI of 80%, while Sealer A ranked third with 60%. Sealers D and E showed the lowest performance, with CUIs of 30% and 35%, respectively, highlighting deficiencies in multiple properties. Discussion: The CUI provides a comprehensive evaluation framework for root canal sealers, facilitating informed decision-making by practitioners. Sealer B's high CUI underscores the importance of balancing sealing ability, antimicrobial effect, flow rate, and solubility. The results align with existing literature emphasizing the critical role of these properties in endodontic success. Conclusion: The CUI offers a robust and balanced method for evaluating root canal sealers, aiding in selecting the most suitable sealer based on empirical data. Antibacterial bone cements (ABCs), such as antibiotic-loaded bone cements (ALBCs), have been widely utilized in clinical treatments. Currently, bone cements loaded with vancomycin, gentamicin, tobramycin, or clindamycin are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. However, traditional ALBCs exhibit drawbacks like burst release and bacterial resistance. Therefore, there is a demand for the development of antibacterial bone cements containing novel agents to address these defects. In this review, we provide an overview and prospect of the new antibacterial agents that can be used or have the potential to be applied in bone cement, including metallic antibacterial agents, pH-switchable antibacterial agents, cationic polymers, N-halamines, non-leaching acrylic monomers, antimicrobial peptides and enzymes. Additionally, we have conducted a preliminary assessment of the feasibility of bone cement containing N-halamine, which has demonstrated good antibacterial activities. The conclusion of this review is that the research and utilization of bone cement containing novel antibacterial agents contribute to addressing the limitations of ALBCs. Therefore, it is necessary to continue expanding the research and use of bone cement incorporating novel antibacterial agents. Background: No clinical trials have evaluated the antimicrobial activity and substantivity of gel formulations containing chlorhexidine (CHX) and cymenol. Objective: To compare the in situ antimicrobial effect and substantivity of a new 0.20% CHX + cymenol gel (test) with the current 0.20% CHX gel formulation (control) on salivary flora and dental plaque biofilm up to seven hours after a single application. Methods: A randomised-crossover clinical trial was conducted with 29 orally healthy volunteers participating in the development of Experiments 1 (saliva) and 2 (dental plaque biofilm). All subjects participated in both experiments and were randomly assigned to receive either the test or control gels. Samples were collected at baseline and five minutes and one, three, five, and seven hours after a single application of the products. The specimens were processed using confocal laser scanning microscopy after staining with the LIVE/DEAD® BacLight™ solution. Bacterial viability (BV) was quantified in the saliva and biofilm samples. The BV was calculated using the DenTiUS Biofilm software. Results: In Experiment 1, the mean baseline BV was significantly reduced five minutes after application in the test group (87.00% vs. 26.50%; p < 0.01). This effect was maintained throughout all sampling times and continued up to seven hours (40.40%, p < 0.01). The CHX control followed the same pattern. In Experiment 2, the mean baseline BV was also significantly lower five minutes after applying the test gel for: (1) the total thickness of biofilm (91.00% vs. 5.80%; p < 0.01); (2) the upper layer (91.29% vs. 3.94%; p < 0.01); and (3) the lower layer (86.29% vs. 3.83%; p < 0.01). The reduction of BV from baseline was observed for the full-thickness and by layers at all sampling moments and continued seven hours after application (21.30%, 24.13%, and 22.06%, respectively; p < 0.01). Again, the control group showed similar results. No significant differences between test and control gels were observed in either saliva or dental plaque biofilm at any sampling time. Conclusions: A 0.20% CHX + cymenol gel application demonstrates potent and immediate antimicrobial activity on salivary flora and de novo biofilm. This study aimed to design sustained released biodegradable calcium carbonate nanoparticles loaded with chlorhexidine (CHX-loaded NPs) and to investigate the early osteogenic differentiation and antimicrobial effects on the important bacteria involved in infections of dental implants. The microemulsion method was used to prepare the calcium carbonate nanoparticles loaded with chlorhexidine. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized using conventional methods. The release pattern determination and the biodegradation test were performed for the prepared nanoparticles. For the early osteogenic differentiation test of the prepared nanoparticles, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was detected in human dental pulp stem cells (HDPSCs). The antimicrobial effects of the nanoparticles were evaluated against Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The sizes of free calcium carbonate nanoparticles and CHX-loaded NPs were 105 ± 1.63 and 118 ± 1.47 nm and their zeta potentials were − 27 and − 36, respectively. A 50% degradation of nanoparticles was achieved after 100 days. These nanoparticles showed a two-stage sustained release pattern in vitro. Microscopic images revealed that the morphology of free calcium carbonate nanoparticles primarily took on a spherical calcite form, while CHX-loaded NPs predominantly exhibited a cauliflower-like vaterite polymorph. The nanoparticles increased the activity of ALP in cells in two weeks significantly (p < 0.05). Antimicrobial and antibiofilm results showed an efficient effect of the prepared nanoparticle against the studied bacteria. Calcium carbonate nanoparticles are an efficient multifunctional vector for chlorhexidine and can be used as a bioactive antibacterial agent against various oral microorganisms to prevent implant infections. Natural products derived from various sources, including plants, have garnered significant interest as alternative therapeutic options. Among these, Tualang honey, extracted from the nectar of Tualang trees (Koompassia excelsa (Becc.) Taub.), has a long history of traditional use due to its therapeutic properties. This review aims to examine the pharmacological activities of Tualang honey, encompassing both in vitro and in vivo studies. A systematic search was conducted in multiple databases, including PubMed, Springer, Scopus, Wiley, and Science Direct, up until December 2022 to identify relevant studies on the pharmacological activities of Tualang honey. Two independent reviewers were involved in article selection, followed by data extraction and assessment of methodological quality using Syrcle's risk of bias tool. 123 articles were included, collectively describing the pharmacological activities of Tualang honey, including antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antinociceptive, neuroprotective effects, and others. The emergence of Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are becoming a major worldwide health concern, encouraging the development effective alternatives to conventional antibiotics. The study identified P. aeruginosa and assessed its antimicrobial sensitivity using the Vitek-2 system. Carbapenem-resistant genes were detected through Polymerase chain reaction (PCR). MDR- P. aeruginosa isolates were used to biosynthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). A study involving 78 P. aeruginosa isolates revealed that 85.8% were MDR, with meropenem and amikacin showing effectiveness against 70% of the isolates. The most prevalent carbapenemase gene was blaOXA-48, present in 83% of the isolates. Majority of the isolates formed biofilms, and biosynthesized TiO2NPs were able to reduce biofilm formation by 94%. TiO2NPs exhibited potent antibacterial action against MDR-Gram-negative bacilli pathogens and showed synergistic activity with antibiotics, particularly piperacillin, with a significant fold increase in areas (283%). A new local strain of P. aeruginosa, identified as ON678251 in the World GenBank, was found capable of producing TiO2NPs. Our findings demonstrate the potential of biosynthesized TiO2NPs to manage antibiotic resistance and regulate the formation of biofilms. This presents a promising direction for the creation of novel antimicrobial agents or substitutes for use in clinical settings, particularly in the management of isolates capable of resisting multiple drugs. Background: Antimicrobial agents (AMAs) are essential for treating infections. A part of AMAs chelate with metal cations (MCs), reducing their blood concentrations. That drug-drug interaction could lead to a reduction of therapeutic efficacy and the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. However, prescriptions ordering concomitant intake (co-intake) of AMAs and MCs are frequently seen in clinical settings. A method for preventing such prescriptions is urgently needed. Methods: We implemented pop-up alerts in the hospital's ordering and pharmacy dispensation support system to notify the prescriptions ordering co-intake of AMAs and MCs for physicians and pharmacists, respectively. To assess the effectiveness of the pop-up alerts, we investigated the number of prescriptions ordering co-intake of AMAs and MCs and the number of pharmacist inquiries to prevent co-intake of AMAs and MCs before and after the implementation of pop-up alerts. Results: Before the implementation of pop-up alerts, 84.5% of prescriptions containing AMA and MCs ordered co-intake of AMAs and MCs. Implementing pop-up alerts time-dependently reduced the proportion of prescriptions ordering co-intake of AMAs and MCs to 43.8% and 29.5% one year and two years later, respectively. The reduction of tetracycline-containing prescriptions was mainly significant. Before the implementation of pop-up alerts, the proportion of prescriptions in which pharmacists prevented co-intake of AMAs and MCs was 3.4%. Implementing pop-up alerts time-dependently increased proportions of such prescriptions to 20.9% and 28.2% one year and two years later. Conclusion: Implementing pop-up alerts reduced prescriptions ordering co-intake of AMAs and MCs and accelerated pharmacists to prevent co-intake of AMAs and MCs. Objective: To develop a novel calcium silver zeolite (Ca-Ag-Zeo) and assess its biocompatibility, physiochemical properties and antimicrobial effects. Methods: Ca-Ag-Zeo was synthesized using ion-exchange method with calcium chloride, silver nitrate and Zeolite X (Zeo). Silver zeolite X (Ag-Zeo) and Zeo were set as control. The chemical structure, morphology, crystal structure and elemental composition of Ca-Ag-Zeo was characterized by X-ray diffraction spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. Its biocompatibility on the human gingival fibroblasts was assessed by cell counting kit-8 assay. Its physiochemical properties were determined by the released calcium and silver ion using Inductive Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometry for up to 12 weeks. The antimicrobial properties on Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and Candida albicans were assessed by minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) or minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) assay. Results: Ca-Ag-Zeo with a hexagonal cage structure was synthesized. As for biocompatibility, the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (± SD in mg/mL) of Ca-Ag-Zeo, Ag-Zeo and Zeo in human gingival fibroblasts were 0.52 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.01 and 3.35 ± 0.58, respectively (Zeo > Ca-Ag-Zeo > Ag-Zeo; p < 0.05). As for physiochemical properties, the accumulated ion release (± SD in mg) of Ca-Ag-Zeo, Ag-Zeo and Zeo were 0.011 ± 0.003, 0 and 0 for calcium ion, respectively (Ca-Ag-Zeo > Ag-Zeo, Zeo; p < 0.001), and 0.213 ± 0.032, 0.209 ± 0.019 and 0 for silver ion, respectively (Ca-Ag-Zeo, Ag-Zeo > Zeo; p < 0.001). As for anti-microbial ability, the MBC/MFC (mg/mL) of Ca-Ag-Zeo, Ag-Zeo and Zeo were 32, 16 and > 256 against Streptococcus mutans; 32, 16, > 256 against Lactobacillus acidophilus; 16, 16, and 256 against Lactobacillus casei; 0.25, 0.125; and 2, 1, > 256 against Candida albicans, respectively. Background and objectives: Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is one of the main retrograde filling materials that is used today as a root end filling material and perforation repair material. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the antibacterial and antifungal properties of four types of bio-ceramic materials, AGM MTA, Ortho MTA, Pro root MTA and Cem cement for oral and dental health. Methods: In this study, the antibacterial activity of four types of bio-ceramic materials against two bacterial strains of Enterococcus faecalis (ATTC 29212), Escherichia coli (ATTC 35318) and antifungal activity against Candida albicans (ATTC 10231) were investigated using the well diffusion method. Results: In the context of the relationship between the type of microorganism and the diameter of the growth inhibitory zone for each type of bio-ceramic material, there was no significant difference for Enterococcus faecalis, and a significant difference was observed for Escherichia coli and Candida albicans (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results show that each of the bio-ceramic materials AGM, Pro root, Cem cement and Ortho have antibacterial and antifungal properties. AGM MTA bio-ceramic material on Candida albicans fungus and Ortho MTA bio-ceramic material had the most effect on Escherichia coli bacteria. Background: Enhancing the antibacterial properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) dental resins is crucial in preventing secondary infections following dental procedures. Despite the necessity for such improvement, a universally applicable method for augmenting the antibacterial properties of PMMA without compromising its mechanical properties and cytotoxicity remains elusive. Consequently, this study aims to address the aforementioned challenges by developing and implementing a composite material known as zinc oxide/graphene oxide (ZnO/GO) nanocomposites, to modify the PMMA. Methods: ZnO/GO nanocomposites were successfully synthesized by a one-step procedure and fully characterized by TEM, EDS, FTIR and XRD. Then the physical and mechanical properties of PMMA modified by ZnO/GO nanocomposites were evaluated through water absorption and solubility test, contact angle test, three-point bending tests, and compression test. Furthermore, the biological properties of the modified PMMA were evaluated by direct microscopic colony count method, crystal violet staining and CCK-8. Results: The results revealed that ZnO/GO nanocomposites were successfully constructed. When the concentration of nanocomposites in PMMA was 0.2 wt. %, the flexural strength of the resin was increased by 23.4%, the compressive strength was increased by 31.1%, and the number of bacterial colonies was reduced by 60.33%. Meanwhile, It was found that the aging of the resin did not affect its antibacterial properties, and CCK-8 revealed that the modified PMMA had no cytotoxicity. Conclusion: ZnO/GO nanocomposites effectively improved the antibacterial properties of PMMA. Background: cultivated and wild plants are used to treat different ailments. The Astragalus genus is found in temperate and dry climates; thus, it is found in Egypt and the arab world. Astragalus caprinus has a good amount of bioactive chemicals, which may help explain its therapeutic effects in reducing the risk of consequences from disease. Method: The phytochemical investigation of the herb and roots of Astragalus caprinus L. included the analytical characterization for the petroleum ether components by GC/MS, unsaponifiable matter (unsap. fraction), and fatty acids (FAME) investigation by GLC analysis. Main flavonoids were chromatographically isolated from ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts. In vitro antimicrobial activity has been tested against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans for different plant extracts, the Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumonia, the fungus Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger, and the Escherichia coli bacterium. Metabolite cytotoxicity was examined using the MTT assay against HepG-2 (human liver carcinoma) and MCF-7 (breast carcinoma). Results: Identifying the important components of the herb and root petroleum ether extracts was achieved. Using column chromatography, luteolin, cosmosiin (apigenin-7-O-glucoside), and cynaroside (luteolin-7-O-glucoside) were separated and identified using UV, NMR, and Mass Spectroscopy. Root extracts displayed potential antimicrobial activity against most of the tested pathogens. Both extracts (herb and roots) were active against the MCF-7 cell line and HepG-2 cell line with IC50 62.5 ± 0.64 and 72.4 ± 2.3 µg/ml, and 75.9 ± 2.5 and 96.8 ± 4.2 µg/ml, respectively. Conclusion: Astragalus caprinus seems to be a promising source of bioactive compounds that could potentially aid in preventing disease complications and address common health issues in developing countries. Objective: Patients with mild oral and maxillofacial space infection (OMSI) usually need only antimicrobial therapy. However, surgical intervention is eventually needed after using antibiotics for a period. The objective of this study was to explore the risk factors for drug therapy failure in OMSI. Subjects and methods: A retrospective case‒control study was designed. From August 2020 to September 2022, patients at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Ninth People's Hospital who were diagnosed with OMSI were retrospectively reviewed. The outcome variable was surgical intervention after the use of antibiotics. We collected common biological factors, including demographic characteristics, routine blood test results, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and composite indicators, such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR). The χ2 test and binary logistic regression were used to examine the association between biological factors and the outcome variable. Results: Forty-six patients were included in this study. Further surgical intervention was needed in 20 patients (43.5%). The NLR showed a significant association with further surgical drainage (p = 0.01). A binary logistic regression equation was found by using stepwise regression based on the Akaike information criterion (R2 = 0.443), which was associated with sex (odds ratio [OR], 0.216; p = 0.092), NLR (OR, 1.258; p = 0.045), red blood cell (RBC) count (OR, 4.372; p = 0.103) and monocyte (MONO) count (OR, 9.528, p = 0.023). Receiver operating characteristic analysis produced an area under the curve for NLR of 0.725 (p = 0.01) and for the binary logistic regression model of 0.8365 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Surgical interventions are needed in some mild OMSI patients when antimicrobial therapy fails to stop the formation of abscesses. The binary logistic regression model shows that NLR can be used as an ideal prognostic factor to predict the outcome of antimicrobial therapy and the possibility of requiring surgical intervention. Statement of clinical relevance: Using simple, inexpensive, and easily achieved biological parameters (such as routine blood test results) and composite indicators calculated by them (such as NLR) to predict whether surgical intervention is needed in the future provides a reference for clinical doctors and enables more cost-effective and efficient diagnosis and treatment. Background: Cymbopogon is a member of the family Poaceae and has been explored for its phytochemicals and bioactivities. Although the antimicrobial activities of Cymbopogon spp. extracts have been extensively studied, comprehensive analyses are required to identify promising compounds for the treatment of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, this study investigated the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of Cymbopogon spp. ethanolic extracts in every single organ. Methods: Ethanolic extracts were obtained from three Indonesian commercial species of Cymbopogon spp., namely Cymbopogon citratus (L.) Rendle, Cymbopogon nardus (DC.) Spatf., and Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt. The leaf, stem, and root extracts were evaluated via metabolite profiling using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). In silico and in vitro analyses were used to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the Cymbopogon spp. ethanolic extracts. In addition, bioactivity was measured using cytotoxicity assays. Antioxidant assays were performed using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis [3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) to determine toxicity to Huh7it-1 cells using a tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Finally, the antimicrobial activity of these extracts was evaluated against Candida albicans, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli using a well diffusion assay. Results: GC–MS analysis revealed 53 metabolites. Of these, 2,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)- phenol (27.87%), alpha-cadinol (26.76%), and 1,2-dimethoxy-4-(1-propenyl)-benzene (20.56%) were the predominant compounds. C. winterianus and C. nardus leaves exhibited the highest antioxidant activity against DPPH and ABTS, respectively. Contrastingly, the MTT assay showed low cytotoxicity. C. nardus leaf extract exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, whereas C. winterianus stem extract showed the highest activity against B. substilis. Furthermore, computational pathway analysis predicted that antimicrobial activity mechanisms were related to antioxidant activity. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that the leaves had strong antioxidant activity, whereas both the leaves and stems showed great antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, all Cymbopogon spp. ethanolic extracts showed low toxicity. Background: Lepionurus sylvestris Blume has a long history of folklore medicinal usage against various ailments. However, studies on these plants were neglected particularly their pharmacological potential. Methods: The crude extract was identified using LC-MS analysis. In vitro assays were carried out to determine the properties of antioxidant, anti-microbial, and anti-cancer. Further, network pharmacology was proposed to evaluate the potential targets of the compounds against breast cancer and type II diabetes. Molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulation were used to determine the potential compounds for the drug formulation of diabetes. Results: Various bioactive compounds were identfied using LC-MS and Galiposin, Fujikinetin, Boeravinone B, 4-Deoxybryaquinone, and Norbaeocystin were described for the first time from the plant. Determination of antioxidant potential showed that the IC50 value of ABTS, DPPH, and phosphomolybdate was 24.33 µg/ml, 37.81 µg/ml, 60.35 µg/ml, and reducing power assays 1.185. The antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli was determined, and the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) was found to be 5.3 mg/ml, 3.47 mg/ml, 3.33 mg/ml, and 2.7 mg/ml respectively, revealing the extracts as effective antibacterial agents. The IC50 values for the plant extract were determined to be 26 µg/ml, 30.52 µg/ml, and 24.39 µg/ml for HeLa, MCF-7, and K-562 cells, respectively, and the increasing concentration of the plant extract increased LDH release. Furthermore, the in silico network pharmacology, molecular docking which had the highest docking score for GAPDH and HIF-1 target proteins of -9.3 kcal/mol, and − 11.3 kcal/mol binding affinities, and molecular dynamic simulation analysis revealed the bioactive compound Boeravinone B present in the plant was significant for the treatment of various ailments. Background: The wound healing process, restoring the functionality of the damaged tissue, can be accelerated by various compounds. The recent experimental analysis highlights the beneficial effects of phytochemicals in improving skin regeneration and wound healing. In traditional medicine, one of the widespread plants used for treating different injuries or skin afflictions is Galium aparine L. (GA). Besides, previously reported chemical compounds of GA suggested its therapeutic effects for the wound healing process, yet its regulatory effects on the cellular and molecular stages of the wound healing process have not been investigated. Methods: In the present study, the phytochemical profile of the GA extract was analyzed using HPTLC fingerprinting, and further scientific evaluation of its phytochemicals was done. The wound-healing effects of GA extract were explored at the cellular and molecular levels while accounting for cell toxicity. The wound closure enhancing effect, antibacterial activity, and antioxidant activity were assessed. Results: The HPTLC fingerprinting of the GA extract proved its previously reported phytochemical profile including phenols, flavonoids, tannins, plant acids, ergot alkaloids, flavonoids, anthraquinones, terpenoids, sterols, salicin, lipophilic compounds, saponins, iridoids, and heterocyclic nitrogen compounds. Antimicrobial assessment, of the extract, indicated the more susceptibility of S. aureus to the inhibitory effects of GA rather than E. coli and S. epidermidis. DPPH test results revealed the antioxidant property of GA extract, which was comparable to ascorbic acid. The results of the viability assay showed no cytotoxicity effects on human umbilical endothelial cell (HUVEC) and normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cell lines treated with different concentrations of whole plant extract and cell viability increased in a dose-dependent manner. The results of the scratch assay showed improved cell migration and wound closure. Conclusions: This study shows the anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, and in vitro wound healing wound-healing effects of GA hydroalcoholic extract, which aligns with its use in traditional medicine. No cytotoxicity effects were shown. The results from this study can be the basis for further investigations such as animal models and phytochemical studies. Further evaluation of its effects on mechanisms and signaling pathways involved in the wound healing processes such as angiogenesis and cell proliferation can provide novel insights into the potential therapeutic effects of the GA extract. Background: Streptococcus mutans has been implicated as a primary causative agent of dental caries and one of its important virulence properties is an ability to form biofilm on tooth surfaces. Thus, strategies to prevent and control S. mutans biofilms are requested. The present study aimed to examine the eradication of S. mutans planktonic and biofilm cells using riboflavin (Rib)-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) enhanced by postbiotic mediators derived from Lactobacillus species. Materials and methods: Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Rib and postbiotic mediators were determined. The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm effects of Rib-mediated aPDT (Rib plus blue light), Rib-mediated aPDT in combination with postbiotic mediators derived from Lactobacillus casei (LC) (aPDT+ LC), and Rib-mediated aPDT in combination with postbiotic mediators derived from Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) (aPDT+ LP) were evaluated. The anti-virulence potential of Rib-mediated aPDT, aPDT+ LC, and aPDT+ LP were assessed by measuring the expression of the gtfB gene using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) at the highest concentrations of Rib, LC, and LP, at which the S. mutans had proliferation as the same as in the control (non-treated) group. Results: According to the results, the MIC doses of LC, LP, and Rib were 64 µg/mL, 128 µg/mL, and 128 µg/mL, respectively, while the MBC values of LC, LP, and Rib were 128 µg/mL, 256 µg/mL, and 256 µg/mL, respectively. Rib-mediated aPDT, aPDT+ LP, and aPDT+ LC showed a significant reduction in Log10 CFU/mL of S. mutans compared to the control group (4.2, 4.9, and 5.2 Log10 CFU/mL, respectively; all P < 0.05). The most destruction of S. mutans biofilms was observed after treatment with aPDT+ LC followed by aPDT+ LP and Rib-mediated aPDT (77.5%, 73.3%, and 67.6%, respectively; all P < 0.05). The concentrations of 31.2 µg/mL, 62.5 µg/mL, and 62.5 µg/mL were considered as the highest concentrations of LC, LP, and Rib, respectively, at which S. mutans replicates as same as the control group and were used for gtfB gene expression assay using qRT-PCR during Rib-mediated aPDT, aPDT+ LP, and aPDT+ LC treatments. Gene expression results revealed that aPDT+ LP and aPDT+ LC could decrease the gene expression level of gtfB by 6.3- and 5.7-fold, respectively (P < 0.05), while only 5.1-fold reduction was observed after Rib-mediated aPDT (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that aPDT+ LP and aPDT+ LC hold promise for use as a treatment to combat S. mutans planktonic and biofilms growth as well as anti-virulence as a preventive strategy to inhibit biofilms development via reduction of gtfB gene expression. Background: Plant-derived compounds have chemopreventive properties to be used as alternative medicine. Pericarp of Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn.), a tropical fruit in Southeast Asia contains a phytochemical α-mangostin (α-MG) that demonstrates potent anticancer effects against various types of cancer. α-MG has been reported to be the most effective agent in human cancer cell lines. The objectives of this study were to develop oral gel formulations containing α-MG and determine their (1) anticancer activity, (2) anti-HPV-16 and antimicrobial activities, (3) nitric oxide (NO) inhibitory activity, and (4) wound healing effect. Methods: Formulations of oral gel containing α-MG were developed. Anticancer activity on SCC-25 was assessed. Apoptotic induction was determined using flow cytometry technique. Antiviral activity against HPV-16 pseudovirus and antimicrobial activity against S. mutans, P. gingivalis and C. albicans were investigated. NO inhibition was carried out. Fibroblast cell migration was determined by in vitro scratch assay. Results: The formulation of 1% α-MG in orabase gel demonstrated anticancer activity by promoting apoptosis in SCC-25. The induction of apoptotic activity was dose dependent with pronounced effect in late apoptosis. The formulation appeared to reduce cell viability of oral keratinocytes (OKC). At CC50 it showed an inhibition against HPV-16 pseudovirus infection. The formulation had no antimicrobial activity against S. mutans, P. gingivalis and C. albicans. No significant NO inhibitory activity and wound healing effects were found. Conclusions: 1% α-MG in orabase gel exhibited anticancer activity by inducing apoptosis although low level of cytotoxicity observed in OKC was present. Fresh ginger is more hydrating than dried ginger, highly skilled at heating the Middle-jiao, alleviating pain, halting bleeding, and managing diarrhea. Dried ginger possesses the ability to alleviate coldness when consumed in a heated form, as well as to alleviate diarrhea when consumed in a heated form. It thrives in warm conditions and has a tendency to revert back to its warm nature. The moisture content of baked ginger is inferior to that of dried ginger, but it is highly effective in alleviating pain, bleeding, and diarrhea by warming the Middle-jiao. However, modern pharmacological research has not fully acknowledged the clinical medicinal value of ginger and consequently, fails to provide accurate guidance for clinical medication. This situation has a negative impact on the contemporary advancement of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The research on modernizing ginger is conducted by analyzing and considering the prospects. It is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory and incorporates the comprehensive perspective of TCM philosophy. The growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance endangers both human and animal life, necessitating the urgent discovery of novel antimicrobial solutions. Medicinal plants hold promise as sources of potential antimicrobial compounds. In this study, we investigated the phytochemical constituents and microbicidal capabilities of the ethanolic extract from Nigella sativa (black seed). Gas chromatography analysis (GC) identified 11 compounds, among them thymoquinone, and thymol, contributing to antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Antimicrobial assays demonstrated notable inhibition zones against broad spectra of bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter, and Bacillus subtilis, along with potent antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger, Penicillium, and Candida albicans. Notably, when combined with antibiotics, the extract displayed exceptional synergistic antimicrobial efficacy. The black seed extract demonstrated membrane-damaging activity and disrupted virulence factors that protect microbes from antimicrobial agents, including the formation of bacterial biofilm and protease secretion. Thymoquinone, the primary active constituent of the extract, exhibited similar antimicrobial and ant virulence properties. In silico analysis targeting key regulators of quorum sensing and biofilm formation in P. aeruginosa, such as RhlG, LasR, and PqsR, showed a remarkable affinity of thymol and thymoquinone for these targets. Moreover, the N. sativa extract exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxicity against both the promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania tropica parasites, hinting at potential antiparasitic activity. Wound is defined as the damage to biological tissues including skin, mucous membranes and organ tissues. The acute wound heals in less than 4 weeks without complications, while a chronic wound takes longer than 6 weeks to heal. Wound healing occurs in 4 phases, namely, coagulation, inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling phases. Triclosan and benzalkonium chloride are commonly used as skin disinfectants in wound healing. However, they cause allergic contact dermatitis and antibiotic resistance. Medicinal plants are widely studied due to the limited availability of wound healing agents. The present review included six commonly available medicinal plants in Malaysia such as Aloe barbadensis Miller, Carica papaya Linn., Centella asiatica Linn., Cymbopogon nardus Linn., Ficus benghalensis Linn. and Hibiscus rosa sinensis Linn. Various search engines and databases were used to obtain the scientific findings, including Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed Central and Research Gate. The review discussed the possible mechanism of action of medicinal plants and their active constituents in the wound healing process. Background: One of the most widely used medicinal plants in Iranian traditional medicine, Rosa × damascena Herrm. (mohammadi flower) that the people of Kashan use as a sedative and to treat nervous diseases and constipation. In this research, the yield, chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of this plant were evaluated for the first time from Azaran region, Kashan. Methods: The essential oil was extracted by means of hydrodistillation (Clevenger), and its chemical compounds were identified and determined by GC/MS. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was determined by the diffusion method in agar, the minimum growth inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum concentration capable of killing bacterial/fungal microorganisms (MBC/MFC). Results: The results showed that the yield of essential oil was 0.1586 ± 0.0331% (w/w). Based on the results of the chemical composition analysis of R. x damascena essential oil, 19 different compounds (98.96%) were identified. The dominant and main components of the essential oil were oleic acid (48.08%), palmitic acid (15.44%), stearic acid (10.17%), citronellol (7.37%) and nonadecane (3.70%). Based on the results of diffusion in agar, the highest zone of inhibition against Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) was ~ 9.5 mm. The strongest inhibitory activity of R. x damascena essential oil against Gram-negative Proteus mirabilis (ATCC 43071) was with the diameter of the inhibition zone (~ 9 mm), which was equal to the strength of rifampin (~ 9 mm). Conclusion: Therefore, this essential oil is a promising natural option rich in fatty acids, which can be a potential for the production of natural antimicrobials against infectious diseases, especially urinary tract infections. Background: Tissue conditioners are used for treating and improving the tissues supporting complete dentures. On the other hand, recent advances in nanotechnology have revolutionized various fields of science, including dentistry. The present study aimed to investigate novel antimicrobial applications of copper oxide nanoparticle-based tissue conditioner used in complete prostheses. Methods: The present experimental study included 126 tissue conditioner samples with different concentrations of copper oxide nanoparticles (20%, 10%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, 0.625%, and 0% w/w). The samples were incubated with Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans in 24-well plates for 24 h. Then, samples from the wells were re-incubated for 24 h, and the microorganisms were counted. Results: The culture media containing E. faecalis and P. aeruginosa showed significantly different growth between different nanoparticle concentrations following 24 h (P < 0.001), showing a reduction in bacterial growth with increased nanoparticle concentration. Both bacteria did not show any growth at the 20% concentration. However, C. albicans showed significant differences in growth between different nanoparticle concentrations following 48 h (P < 0.001), showing a reduction in growth with increased nanoparticle concentration. Also, the least growth was observed at the 20% concentration. Conclusions: In conclusion, the CuO nanoparticles were prepared using a green synthesis methon in the suitable sizes. Iron nanoparticles comprise a significant class of inorganic nanoparticles, which discover applications in various zones by prudence of their few exciting properties. This study achieved the green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) by black cumin seed (Nigella sativa) extract, which acts as a reducing and capping agent. The iron nanoparticles and black cumin extract were synthesized in three different concentrations: (01:01, 02:04,01:04). UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, FTIR, and AFM characterized the synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles. UV-visible spectra show the maximum absorbance peak of 01:01 concentration at 380 nm. The other concentrations, such as 02:04, peaked at 400 nm and 01:04 at 680 nm, confirming the formation of iron oxide nanoparticles. AFM analysis reveals the spherical shape of iron oxide nanoparticles. The XRD spectra reveal the (fcc) cubic crystal structure of the iron oxide nanoparticles. The FTIR analysis's peaks at 457.13, 455.20, and 457.13 cm-1 depict the characteristic iron nanoparticle synthesis. Background: Biosurfactants are amphiphilic compounds produced by various microorganisms. Current research evaluates diverse types of biosurfactants against a range of oral pathogens. Objectives: This systematic review aims to explore the potential of microbial-derived biosurfactants for oral applications. Methodology: A systematic literature search was performed utilizing PubMed-MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases with designated keywords. The results were registered in the PROSPERO database and conducted following the PRISMA checklist. Criteria for eligibility, guided by the PICOS framework, were established for both inclusion and exclusion criteria. The QUIN tool was used to assess the bias risk for in vitro dentistry studies. Results: Among the initial 357 findings, ten studies were selected for further analysis. The outcomes of this systematic review reveal that both crude and purified forms of biosurfactants exhibit antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties against various oral pathogens. Noteworthy applications of biosurfactants in oral products include mouthwash, toothpaste, and implant coating. Conclusion: Biosurfactants have garnered considerable interest and demonstrated their potential for application in oral health. This is attributed to their surface-active properties, antiadhesive activity, biodegradability, and antimicrobial effectiveness against a variety of oral microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. Background: Antibiotic consumption is a driver for the increase of antimicrobial resistance. The objective of this study is to analyze variations in antibiotic consumption and its appropriate use in Brazil from 2014 to 2019. Methods: We conducted a time series study using the surveillance information system database (SNGPC) from the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency. Antimicrobials sold in retail pharmacies were evaluated. All antimicrobials recorded for systemic use identified by the active ingredient were eligible. Compounded products and formulations for topic use (dermatological, gynecological, and eye/ear treatments) were excluded. The number of defined daily doses (DDDs)/1,000 inhabitants/day for each antibiotic was attributed. The number of DDDs per 1,000 inhabitants per day (DDIs) was used as a proxy for consumption. Results were stratified by regions and the average annual percentage change in the whole period studied was estimated. We used the WHO Access, Watch, and Reserve (AWaRe) framework to categorize antimicrobial drugs. Results: An overall increase of 30% in consumption from 2014 to 2019 was observed in all Brazilian regions. Amoxicillin, azithromycin and cephalexin were the antimicrobials more consumed, with the Southeast region responsible for more than 50% of the antibiotic utilization. Among all antimicrobials analyzed 45.0% were classified as watch group in all Brazilian regions. Conclusion: We observed a significant increase in antibiotics consumption from 2014 to 2019 in Brazil restricted to the Northeast and Central West regions. Background: In the region of Piedmont, in Northern Italy, formal monitoring of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs has been in place since 2012. The objective of our study was to provide an updated assessment of AMS programs operating in our region, and to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stewardship activities. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted to investigate AMS programs implemented in acute-care trusts participating in a broader healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prevention and control program, promoted by the regional health department. Within this program, structure, process, and outcome indicators of AMS programs were investigated, using a previously developed scoring system. Differences between scores prior to (2019) and during the pandemic (2021) were assessed. Linear regression was used to assess whether the 5-year trends (2017–2021) in outcome measures in relation to structure and process scores were statistically significant. Compound annual growth rates (CAGR) for each outcome were calculated to illustrate changes in outcome rates over time. Results: All public trusts in the Region (20) and a small number of private institutions (3) provided data for this study. A modest, non-significant improvement was found for 2021 structure, process, and total scores compared to respective 2019 scores. A significant improvement was found concerning the definition of a formal mission statement, whereas significantly less trusts included monitoring adherence to antimicrobial policy or treatment guidelines in their programs. Overall consumption of antibiotics for systemic use saw an increase in 2021, with 2021 recording the highest median overall consumption compared to all previous years considered in this study. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and carbapenem-resistant enterobacteria (CRE) rates decreased over the 5-year period. Significant downwards trends in MRSA rates were identified for high-outlier structure and process groups. Conclusions: Results of this study suggest AMS programs in Piedmont were not set back following the pandemic. This outcome was possible thanks to well-established programs, coordinated within a regional framework. Intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in hospital settings worldwide. The cornerstones of IAI management include rapid, accurate diagnostics; timely, adequate source control; appropriate, short-duration antimicrobial therapy administered according to the principles of pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and antimicrobial stewardship; and hemodynamic and organ functional support with intravenous fluid and adjunctive vasopressor agents for critical illness (sepsis/organ dysfunction or septic shock after correction of hypovolemia). In patients with IAIs, a personalized approach is crucial to optimize outcomes and should be based on multiple aspects that require careful clinical assessment. The anatomic extent of infection, the presumed pathogens involved and risk factors for antimicrobial resistance, the origin and extent of the infection, the patient's clinical condition, and the host's immune status should be assessed continuously to optimize the management of patients with complicated IAIs. Intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are common surgical emergencies and are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in hospital settings, particularly if poorly managed. The cornerstones of effective IAIs management include early diagnosis, adequate source control, appropriate antimicrobial therapy, and early physiologic stabilization using intravenous fluids and vasopressor agents in critically ill patients. Adequate empiric antimicrobial therapy in patients with IAIs is of paramount importance because inappropriate antimicrobial therapy is associated with poor outcomes. Optimizing antimicrobial prescriptions improves treatment effectiveness, increases patients' safety, and minimizes the risk of opportunistic infections (such as Clostridioides difficile) and antimicrobial resistance selection. The growing emergence of multi-drug resistant organisms has caused an impending crisis with alarming implications, especially regarding Gram-negative bacteria. The Multidisciplinary and Intersociety Italian Council for the Optimization of Antimicrobial Use promoted a consensus conference on the antimicrobial management of IAIs, including emergency medicine specialists, radiologists, surgeons, intensivists, infectious disease specialists, clinical pharmacologists, hospital pharmacists, microbiologists and public health specialists. Relevant clinical questions were constructed by the Organizational Committee in order to investigate the topic. The expert panel produced recommendation statements based on the best scientific evidence from PubMed and EMBASE Library and experts' opinions. The statements were planned and graded according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) hierarchy of evidence. On November 10, 2023, the experts met in Mestre (Italy) to debate the statements. After the approval of the statements, the expert panel met via email and virtual meetings to prepare and revise the definitive document. This document represents the executive summary of the consensus conference and comprises three sections. The first section focuses on the general principles of diagnosis and treatment of IAIs. The second section provides twenty-three evidence-based recommendations for the antimicrobial therapy of IAIs. Background: The historical use of Laurus nobilis L., the plant is native to the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for its aromatic leaves, which are used as a flavoring agent in cooking and for their potential therapeutic properties. Methods: The purpose of the current investigation was to characterize the essential oil composition of the fresh L. nobilis leaves from Palestine by using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), p-nitrophenyl butyrate, and 3,5-dinitro salicylic acid (DNSA) methods were employed to estimate the antioxidant, antiobesity, and antidiabetic effects of the essential oil. While MTS assay were used to evaluate their antiproliferative activities on panels of cell lines. Moreover, the docking studies were aided by the Prime MM GBSA method for estimating binding affinities. Results: The GC-MS investigation demonstrated that the fresh L. nobilis leaves essential oil has a variety of chemicals, about 31 different biochemicals were identified, and the major compounds were 1,8-cineole (48.54 ± 0.91%), terpinyl acetate (13.46 ± 0.34%), and α-terpinyl (3.84 ± 0.35%). Furthermore, the investigated oil demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against all tested bacterial and candidal strains and significantly inhibited the growth of MCF-7 cancerous cells more than the chemotherapeutic drug Doxorubicin. Furthermore, it contains robust DPPH free radicals, as well as porcine pancreatic α-amylase and lipase enzymes. Using the 1,8-cineole compound as the predominant biomolecule found in the L. nobilis essential oil, molecular docking studies were performed to confirm these observed fabulous results. The molecular docking simulations proposed that these recorded biological activities almost emanated from its high ability to form strong and effective hydrophobic interactions, this led to the getting of optimal fitting and interaction patterns within the binding sites of the applied crystallographic protein targets. Conclusion: The results of these experiments showed that the fresh L. nobilis leaves essential oil has outstanding pharmacological capabilities, making this oil a potential source of natural medications. Background: The chemical composition and biological activities of Eucalyptus essential oils (EOs) have been documented in numerous studies against multiple infectious diseases. The antibacterial activity of individual Eucalyptus EOs against strains that cause ear infections was investigated in our previous study. The study's antibacterial activity was promising, which prompted us to explore this activity further with EO blends. Methods: We tested 15 combinations (9 binary combinations and 6 combinations of binary combinations) of Eucalyptus EOs extracted by hydrodistillation from eight Tunisian Eucalyptus species dried leaves against six bacterial strains responsible for ear infections: three bacterial isolates (Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and three reference bacteria strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, ATTC 9027; Staphylococcus aureus, ATCC 6538; and Escherichia coli, ATCC 8739). The EOs were analyzed using GC/FID and GC/MS. The major compounds, as well as all values obtained from the bacterial growth inhibition assay, were utilized for statistical analysis. Results: The antibacterial activity of the EO blends exhibited significant variation within Eucalyptus species, bacterial strains, and the applied methods. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), based on the diameters of the inhibition zone, facilitated the identification of two major groups and ten subgroups based on the level of antibacterial activity. The highest antibacterial activity was observed for the mixture of EOs extracted from E. panctata, E. accedens, and E. cladoclayx (paac) as well as E. panctata, E. wandoo, E. accedens, and E. cladoclayx (pwac) using the disc diffusion method. Additionally, significant activity was noted with EOs extracted from E. panctata, E. wandoo (pw) and E. panctata, E. accedens (pa) using the broth microdilution method. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that certain EO combinations (paac, pwac, pw, and pa) could be considered as potential alternative treatment for ear infections due to their demonstrated highly promising antibacterial activities. Background: Treatment of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) infections in low-resource settings is challenging particularly due to limited treatment options. Colistin is the mainstay drug for treatment; however, nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity make this drug less desirable. Thus, mortality may be higher among patients treated with alternative antimicrobials that are potentially less efficacious than colistin. We assessed mortality in patients with CRE bacteremia treated with colistin-based therapy compared to colistin-sparing therapy. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using secondary data from a South African national laboratory-based CRE bacteremia surveillance system from January 2015 to December 2020. Patients hospitalized at surveillance sentinel sites with CRE isolated from blood cultures were included. Multivariable logistic regression modeling, with multiple imputations to account for missing data, was conducted to determine the association between in-hospital mortality and colistin-based therapy versus colistin-sparing therapy. Results: We included 1 607 case-patients with a median age of 29 years (interquartile range [IQR], 0–52 years) and 53% (857/1 607) male. Klebsiella pneumoniae caused most of the infections (82%, n=1 247), and the most common carbapenemase genes detected were blaOXA-48-like (61%, n=551), and blaNDM (37%, n=333). The overall in-hospital mortality was 31% (504/1 607). Patients treated with colistin-based combination therapy had a lower case fatality ratio (29% [152/521]) compared to those treated with colistin-sparing therapy 32% [352/1 086]) (p=0.18). In our imputed model, compared to colistin-sparing therapy, colistin-based therapy was associated with similar odds of mortality (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.78-1.33, p=0.873). Conclusion: In our resource-limited setting, the mortality risk in patients treated with colistin-based therapy was comparable to that of patients treated with colistin-sparing therapy. Given the challenges with colistin treatment and the increasing resistance to alternative agents, further investigations into the benefit of newer antimicrobials for managing CRE infections are needed. Background: The formation of white spots, which represent early carious lesions, is a major issue with fixed orthodontics. The addition of remineralizing agents to orthodontic adhesives may prevent the formation of white spots. The aim of this study was to produce a composite orthodontic adhesive combined with nano-bioactive glass-silver (nBG@Ag) for bracket bonding to enamel and to investigate its cytotoxicity, antimicrobial activity, remineralization capability, and bond strength. Methods: nBG@Ag was synthesized using the sol-gel method, and characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with an attenuated total reflectance attachment (ATR-FTIR). The cytotoxicity test (MTT) and antimicrobial activity of adhesives containing 1%, 3%, and 5% (wt/wt) nBG@Ag were evaluated, and the shear bond strength of the adhesives was measured using a universal testing machine. Remineralization was assessed through microhardness testing with a Vickers microhardness tester and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistical analyses were conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene test, one-way ANOVA, Robust-Welch test, Tukey HSD method, and two-way ANOVA. Results: The biocompatibility of the adhesives was found to be high, as confirmed by the lack of significant differences in the cytotoxicity between the sample and control groups. Discs made from composites containing nBG@Ag exhibited a significant reduction in the growth of Streptococcus mutans (p < 0.05), and the antibacterial activity increased with higher percentages of nBG@Ag. The shear bond strength of the adhesives decreased significantly (p < 0.001) after the addition of nanoparticles, but it remained above the recommended value. The addition of nBG@Ag showed improvement in the microhardness of the teeth, although the differences in microhardness between the study groups were not statistically significant. The formation of hydroxyapatite deposits on the tooth surface was confirmed through SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Conclusion: Adding nBG@Ag to orthodontic adhesives can be an effective approach to enhance antimicrobial activity and reduce enamel demineralization around the orthodontic brackets, without compromising biocompatibility and bond strength. Background: Biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles using microorganisms are a fabulous and emerging eco-friendly science with well-defined sizes, shapes and controlled monodispersity. Copper nanoparticles, among other metal particles, have sparked increased attention due to their applications in electronics, optics, catalysis, and antimicrobial agents. Results: This investigation explains the biosynthesis and characterization of copper nanoparticles from soil strains, Niallia circulans G9 and Paenibacillus sp. S4c by an eco-friendly method. The maximum reduction of copper ions and maximum synthesis CuNPs was provided by these strains. Biogenic formation of CuNPs have been characterized by UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray analysis and transmission electron microscopy analysis. Using UV-visible spectrum scanning, the synthesised CuNPs' SPR spectra showed maximum absorption peaks at λ304&308 nm. TEM investigation of the produced CuNPs revealed the development of spherical/hexagonal nanoparticles with a size range of 13–100 nm by the G9 strain and spherical nanoparticles with a size range of 5–40 nm by the S4c strain. Functional groups and chemical composition of CuONPs were also confirmed. The antimicrobial activity of the biosynthesized CuNPs were investigated against some human pathogens. CuNPs produced from the G9 strain had the highest activity against Candida albicans ATCC 10,231 and the lowest against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027. CuNPs from the S4c strain demonstrated the highest activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 10,231 and the lowest activity against Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 13,883. Conclusion: The present work focused on increasing the CuNPs production by two isolates, Niallia circulans G9 and Paenibacillus sp. S4c, which were then characterized alongside. The used analytics and chemical composition techniques validated the existence of CuONPs in the G9 and S4c biosynthesized nano cupper. CuNPs of S4c are smaller and have a more varied shape than those of G9 strain, according to TEM images. In terms of antibacterial activity, the biosynthesized CuNPs from G9 and S4c were found to be more effective against Candida albicans ATCC 10,231 and E. coli ATCC 10,231, respectively. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), AYURVEDA and Indian medicine are essential in disease prevention and treatment. Kelisha capsule (KLSC), a TCM formula listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, has been clinically proven to possess potent antibacterial properties. However, the precise antimicrobial mechanism of KLSC remained unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the dual antibacterial mechanism of KLSC using network pharmacology, molecular docking, and experimental validation. By analyzing the growth curve of Escherichia coli (E. coli), it was observed that KLSC significantly inhibited its growth, showcasing a remarkable antibacterial effect. Furthermore, SEM and TEM analysis revealed that KLSC damaged the cell wall and membrane of E. coli, resulting in cytoplasmic leakage, bacterial death, and the exertion of antibacterial effects. The network pharmacology analysis revealed that KLSC exhibited an effect on E. coli ATP synthase, thereby influencing the energy metabolism process. The molecular docking outcomes provided evidence that the active compounds of KLSC could effectively bind to the ATP synthase subunit. Subsequently, experimental findings substantiated that KLSC effectively suppressed the activity of ATP synthase in E. coli and consequently decreased the ATP content. This study highlighted the dual antibacterial mechanism of KLSC, emphasizing its effects on cell structure and energy metabolism, suggesting its potential as a natural antibacterial agent for E. coli-related infections. Background: The plant roots excrete a large number of organic compounds into the soil. The rhizosphere, a thin soil zone around the roots, is a hotspot for microbial activity, making it a crucial component of the soil ecosystem. Secondary metabolites produced by rhizospheric Sphingomonas sanguinis DM have sparked significant curiosity in investigating their possible biological impacts. Methods: A bacterial strain has been isolated from the rhizosphere of Datura metel. The bacterium's identification, fermentation, and working up have been outlined. The ethyl acetate fraction of the propagated culture media of Sphingomonas sanguinis DM was fractioned and purified using various chromatographic techniques. The characterization of the isolated compounds was accomplished through the utilization of various spectroscopic techniques, such as UV, MS, 1D, and 2D-NMR. Furthermore, the evaluation of their antimicrobial activity was conducted using the agar well diffusion method, while cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT test. Results: The extract from Sphingomonas sanguinis DM provided two distinct compounds: n-dibutyl phthalic acid (1) and Bis (2-methyl heptyl) phthalate (2) within its ethyl acetate fraction. Furthermore, the 16S rRNA gene sequence of Sphingomonas sanguinis DM has been registered under the NCBI GenBank database with the accession number PP422198. The bacterial extract exhibited its effect against gram-positive bacteria, inhibiting Streptococcus mutans (12.6 ± 0.6 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (10.6 ± 0.6 mm) compared to standard antibiotics. Conversely, compound 1 showed a considerable effect against phytopathogenic fungi such as Alternaria alternate (56.3 ± 10.6 mm) and Fusarium oxysporum (21.3 ± 1.5 mm) with a MIC value of 17.5 µg/mL. However, it was slightly active against Klebsiella pneumonia (11.0 ± 1.0 mm). Furthermore, compound 2 was the most active metabolite, having a significant antimicrobial efficacy against Rhizoctonia solani (63.6 ± 1.1 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (16.7 ± 0.6 mm), and Alternaria alternate (20.3 ± 0.6 mm) with MIC value at 15 µg/mL. In addition, compound 2 exhibited the most potency against hepatocellular (HepG-2) and skin (A-431) carcinoma cell lines with IC50 values of 107.16 µg/mL and 111.36 µg/mL, respectively. Conclusion: Sphingomonas sanguinis DM, a rhizosphere bacterium of Datura metel, was studied for its phytochemical and biological characteristics, resulting in the identification of two compounds with moderate antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. Background: Medicinal plants play a major role in the delivery of healthcare, particularly among the rural population of Ethiopia. Plant extracts and their bioactive compounds have been utilized for the treatment of several diseases. This study was aimed at evaluating the antibacterial activity, antioxidant capacity, and phytochemical content of selected medicinal plants used in Dibatie district, western Ethiopia. Methods: Study plants were collected, shade dried, pulverized, extracted by maceration in 80% ethanol, and subjected to antibacterial, antioxidant, and phytochemical tests. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using 96-well microplates and nutrient broth microdilution. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Phytochemical screening was conducted using standard test methods. Results: The ethanolic extract of Polystachya steudneri Rchb.f. pseudobulbs was the most active against gram-negative Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Shigella flexneri, with MIC values of 8 ± 0, 11 ± 5, 3 ± 1, 3 ± 1, and 2 ± 0 mg/mL, respectively. The ethanolic extract of P. steudneri was also the most effective against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Enterococcus faecalis, with MIC values of 8 ± 0, 8 ± 0, 3 ± 1, and 16 ± 0 mg/mL, respectively. Ethanolic extracts of Gnidia involucrata Steud. ex A.Rich. stems and roots were effective antioxidants, with respective 50% DPPH free radical inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 168.68 and 181.79 µg/mL, followed by that of P. steudneri (IC50 = 203.11 µg/mL). The study plants contained alkaloids, anthocyanins, anthraquinones, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, steroids, tannins, and terpenoids. Conclusions: This study confirmed the antibiotic, antioxidant, and phytochemical constituents of the investigated plants and suggested further investigations that may lead to bioactive lead compounds.
