Background: Though the relationship between parental smoking and adolescent smoking has been established, gender differences, and mediation of resilience in this relationship are poorly understood. This research aims to investigate the prevalence of adolescent smoking, and to understand how consequences may differ for boys and girls, as well as to explore what role resilience played in this relationship. Methods: Through the school-based cross-sectional survey, a total of 65,898 adolescents were involved in this study, and information were collected by self-reported questionnaire. Participants' smoking status and their parental smoking status were collected by self-made questionnaire, and resilience was assessed by the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10). The multivariate logistic regression was conducted to explore the relationship between parental smoking and adolescent smoking. After that, the path analysis was applied to explore the mediation of resilience in this relationship. Results: Of all participants, the rate of self-report current smoking and biologically verified smoking was 1.4% and 2.0%, respectively. Both self-reported and biologically verified prevalence of smoking among boys were higher than that in girls. There were gender differences in the impact of parental smoking on adolescent smoking: mother smoking had a negative effect on adolescent smoking, and resilience could mitigate this negative effect. Father smoking had no association with girl smoking, while father smoking was positively associated with boy smoking, and resilience was mediated in this association. Conclusions: Our findings suggested smoking prevention in adolescents can be done differently for different genders. Besides, results indicated resilience was important in preventing adolescent smoking. Furthermore, parents quitting smoking can play an important role in preventing adolescent smoking to a certain extent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/aim: Psychotherapy training for medical students and residents in China is still in development. To establish an appropriate training program, understanding medical students' and residents' current knowledge and attitudes toward psychotherapy is needed. Methods: One hundred and forty-nine participants, including medical students, residents, and other health providers (HCPs), self-reported their understanding of 18 types of psychotherapy, negative attitude towards cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and their attitude towards psychological interventions and counseling in primary care (APIC-PC) through an online survey. Results: Participants' understanding of psychotherapy was generally low (M = 26.25, SD = 22.99). Medical students' (M = 34.42, SD = 22.61) and HCPs' (M = 37.25, SD = 30.834) understanding was significantly higher than residents' (M = 20.08, SD = 19.54), F(2, 146) = 8.63, p <.001. Participants from psychiatric departments (M = 33.85, SD = 25.89) understood more psychotherapy than those from non-psychiatric departments (M = 20.98, SD = 19.20), t(147) = 3.46, p <.001. Participants with a bachelor's degree (M = 2.40, SD = 0.976) scored lower on the Negative Attitude Towards CBT Scale than participants with a graduate degree (M = 2.76, SD = 1.00), t(147) = -2.20, p = 0.029. All participants' APIC-PC scores were relatively the same and indicated a neutral to slightly positive attitude towards psychotherapy and counseling practices. However, they showed a slightly negative attitude in the "willingness to counsel" subscale (M = 2.65, SD = 0.93). Conclusion: This study indicated a lack of knowledge of psychotherapy and a lack of psychotherapy courses for medical students and residents, especially those from non-psychiatric departments in China. Our findings suggest an urgent need for psychotherapy and relevant training for Chinese medical students and residents. Background: Considering the extreme shortage of smoking cessation services in China, and the acceptability, feasibility and efficacy of mobile phone-based text message interventions for quitting smoking in other countries, here we propose a study of "the efficacy of mobile phone-based text message interventions ('Happy Quit') for smoking cessation in China". The primary objective of this proposed project is to assess whether a program of widely accessed mobile phone-based text message interventions ('Happy Quit') will be effective at helping people in China who smoke, to quit. Based on the efficacy of previous studies in smoking cessation, we hypothesize that 'Happy Quit' will be an effective, feasible and affordable smoking cessation program in China.Methods/design: In this single-blind, randomized trial, undertaken in China, about 2000 smokers willing to make a quit attempt will be randomly allocated, using an independent telephone randomization system that includes a minimization algorithm balancing for sex (male, female), age (19-34 or >34 years), educational level (≤ or >12 years), and Fagerstrom score for nicotine addiction (≤5, >5), to 'Happy Quit', comprising motivational messages and behavioral-change support, or to a control group that receives text messages unrelated to quitting. Messages will be developed to be suitable for Chinese. A pilot study will be conducted before the intervention to modify the library of messages and interventions. The primary outcome will be self-reported continuous smoking abstinence. A secondary outcome will be point prevalence of abstinence. Abstinence will be assessed at six time points (4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks post-intervention). A third outcome will be reductions in number of cigarettes smoked per day.Discussion/implications: The results will provide valuable insights into bridging the gap between need and services received for smoking cessation interventions and tobacco use prevention in China. Background: Several lines of evidence indicate mitochondrial impairment in the pathophysiology of autism. As one of the most common biomarkers for mitochondrial dysfunction, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number has also been linked to autism, but the relationship between mtDNA copy number and autism was still obscured. In this study, we performed a case-control study to investigate whether mtDNA copy number in peripheral blood cells is related to patients with autism., Methods: Relative mtDNA copy number in peripheral blood cells was measured by using real-time polymerase chain reaction method. The participants in this study included 78 patients with childhood autism and 83 typically developing children., Results: We observed children with autism had significantly elevated relative mtDNA copy number than healthy controls (Beta = -0.173, P = 0.0003). However, there were no significant correlations between mtDNA copy number and clinical features (paternal age, maternal age, age of onset, illness of duration, CARS score and ABC score) in childhood autism., Conclusion: We show that elevated mtDNA copy number in peripheral blood is associated with autism, indicating that there may be mitochondrial dysfunction in children with autism.

Background: Illicit drug use/dependence has been recognized as a major problem. Clinical studies demonstrate that poor sleep quality is associated with increased frequency of drug use and relapse. However, few studies have addressed the issue of sleep quality among illicit drug dependent subjects., Methods: This cross-sectional study explored sleep quality in drug dependent subjects in China. We studied 2178 illicit drug dependent subjects from drug rehabilitation centres in Changsha and 2236 non-drug-using subjects, all of whom completed the self-report Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)., Results: We found that the prevalence of sleep disturbance was much higher in drug users (68.5%, PSQI >5; specifically, 80.24% in heroin users, 54.16% in methamphetamine users and 81.98% in ketamine users with PSQI >5) than non-users (26.4%, PSQI >5). Drug users had approximately twice the sleep latency than nondrug users (37.7 minutes V.S 18.4 minutes). Although drug users and non-users reported similar sleep duration (about 7.4 hours), drug users showed poorer subjective sleep quality and habitual sleep efficiency. They reported more sleep disturbance and need for sleep medications, more daytime dysfunction and poorer subjective sleep quality compared with nondrug users. The total PSQI score positively correlated with the duration of drug use (rp = 0.164, p < 0.001). We also found a link between sleep problems and cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and duration of drug use., Conclusions: Poor sleep quality is common among illicit drug dependent subjects. Long-term substance users had more sleep problems. Future research aiming at quantifying the benefits of treatment interventions should not neglect the influence of sleep problems. Gaining more insight into the impact of sleep quality on the addiction treatment could also help to target future intervention measures more effectively.

Background: Few studies have been previously published about the resting state brain activity in young chronic smokers, although many previous fMRI studies have shown that the task-related activity pattern is altered in chronic smokers., Methods: In the present study, forty-five healthy smokers (age: 27.9 ± 5.6 year) and forty-four healthy non-smoking control subjects (age: 26.3 ± 5.8 year) have been imaged with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and analyzed with the regional homogeneity (ReHo) approach., Results: Compared with healthy controls, decreased ReHo was found in smokers in the right inferior frontal cortex and increased ReHo was found in the left superior parietal lobe (P < 0.01, 35 Voxels,Alphasim corrected)., Conclusions: Our data suggested that, during resting state, neural function is less synchronized in the right inferior frontal cortex and more synchronized in the left superior parietal lobe in chronic smokers compared to non-smokers. The decreased synchronization in the right inferior frontal cortex may reflect lacking of control over reward-related behavior, and the increased synchronization may reflect smoking urges.

Background: The NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase flavoprotein gene (NDUFV2), which encodes a 24 kD mitochondrial complex I subunit, has been reported to be positively associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in different populations., Methods: We genotyped the promoter variants of this gene (rs6506640 and rs1156044) by direct sequencing in 529 unrelated Han Chinese schizophrenia patients and 505 matched controls. Fisher's Exact test was performed to assess whether these two reported single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) confer susceptibility to schizophrenia in Chinese., Results: Allele, genotype and haplotype comparison between the case and control groups showed no statistical significance, suggesting no association between the NDUFV2 gene promoter variants and schizophrenia in Han Chinese., Conclusion: The role of NDUFV2 played in schizophrenia needs to be further studied. Different racial background and/or population substructure might account for the inconsistent results between studies.
