Introduction: Homonymous quadrantanopsia results from retrochiasmal lesions in the visual pathway. Invasive mole is a benign tumor that arises from myometrial invasion of a hydatidiform mole via direct extension through tissue or venous channels. Cerebral metastasis of invasive mole is rare and there has been no report demonstrating homonymous quadrantanopsia as the first manifestation of metastasis in any trophoblastic neoplasms.Case Presentation: We report the case of a 31-year-old Asian woman who presented with right homonymous inferior quadrantanopsia from the mass effect of a solitary cerebral metastasis from an invasive mole. A magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the brain showed a metastatic tumor in the left occipital lobe. The visual field improved slightly after chemotherapy. There was a reduction in the tumor size and the surrounding edema. This is the first case report demonstrating that homonymous quadrantanopsia should be included in the manifestations of the metastasis of an invasive mole.Conclusions: The presentation of homonymous quadrantanopsia must alert ophthalmologists to conduct a complete medical history and arrange specialist consultation. Background: Despite considerable progress in the development of anticancer therapies, there is still a high mortality rate caused by cancer relapse and metastasis. Dormant or slow-cycling residual tumor cells are thought to be a source of tumor relapse and metastasis, and are therefore an obstacle to therapy. In this study, we assessed the drug resistance of tumor cells in mice, and investigated whether vaccination could promote survival.Methods: The mouse colon carcinoma cell line CT-26 was treated with 5-fluorouracil to assess its sensitivity to drug treatment. Mice with colon tumors were immunized with inactivated slow-cycling CT-26 cells to estimate the efficacy of this vaccine.Results: We identified a small population of slow-cycling tumor cells in the mouse colon carcinoma CT-26 cell line, which was resistant to conventional chemotherapy. To inhibit tumor recurrence and metastasis more effectively, treatments that selectively target the slow-cycling tumor cells should be developed to complement conventional therapies. We found that drug-treated, slow-cycling tumor cells induced a more intense immune response in vitro. Moreover, vaccination with inactivated slow-cycling tumor cells caused a reduction in tumor volume and prolonged the overall survival of tumor-bearing mice.Conclusions: These findings suggest that targeting of slow-cycling tumor cells application using immunotherapy is a possible treatment to complement traditional antitumor therapy. Background: This study aimed to compare clinical features and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the Chinese chronic kidney disease (CKD) 3 population and determined the necessity of the subdivision of CKD3 in Chinese patients with CKD., Methods: Participants with stage 3 CKD (18-74 years of age) were recruited at 39 clinical centers located at 28 cities in 22 provinces of China. The sociodemographic status, medical history, anthropometric measurements, and lifestyle behaviors were documented at entry, and blood and urine samples were collected. The estimated glomerular filtration rate was calculated using the CKD-EPI creatinine equation. The HRQoL was evaluated using the kidney disease quality-of-life instrument. A linear regression model was used to estimate the association between HRQoL and CKD stages (G3b vs G3a)., Results: The levels of intact parathyroid hormone, systolic blood pressure, uric acid, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were statistically significantly higher, whereas the levels of serum bicarbonate and hemoglobin were statistically significantly lower in the G3b group compared with the G3a group. Compared with CKD G3a group, the proportions of subjects with hyperuricemia and anemia were significantly higher in CKD G3b group (61.4% vs. 52.0% and 26.4% vs. 17.9%, respectively, P< 0.01). The HRQoL scores in "physical functioning (PCS)", "symptoms and problems", "effects of the kidney disease" and "burden of the kidney disease" were statistically significantly lower in the CKD G3b group compared with the CKD G3a group (90.88 ± 11.05 vs. 89.30 ± 11.52, 88.29 ± 11.94 vs. 86.49 ± 13.45, 55.86 ± 26.40 vs. 52.10 ± 27.64, 46.56 ± 8.16 vs. 44.51 ± 9.22, respectively, P< 0.01). Further, CKD G3b was associated with a lower score of physical functioning compared with G3a (regression coefficient =-1.12 [95%CI: -2.23, -0.16])., Conclusions: The preliminary results of this study suggested that modest differences existed in many important clinical features and KDQoL between patients with G3a and G3b CKD in a Chinese population. Also, a significant association between CKD3 subdivision of the disease and PCS was detected. Although further work is needed, we can speculate based on these results the CKD3 subdivision may be clinically meaningful for Chinese patients with CKD.

Background: Coronary atherosclerosis, the most common form of coronary artery disease (CAD), is characterized by accumulation of lipid in the walls of coronary arteries. Recent data from clinical trials have showed that high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) has causal role in the pathogenesis and development of coronary atherosclerosis. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is an important regulator of plasma HDL-C. Several genetic mutations in the CETP gene were found to be associated with HDL-C levels. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the association of HDL-C-related CETP polymorphisms and risk of coronary atherosclerosis., Methods: We investigated the association of seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) (rs1800775, rs708272, rs5882, rs1532624, rs1864163, rs7499892, and rs9989419) in the CETP gene with the risk of coronary atherosclerosis and levels of HDL-C in a case-control study in China. Included in the study were 420 patients with coronary atherosclerosis and 424 healthy controls. SNP genotyping was performed by TaqMan allelic discrimination assay and serum lipid levels were measured by standard laboratory methods., Results: Carriers of the AA and GA + AA genotypes of rs708272 had significant lower risks of coronary atherosclerosis (OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.36-0.85, p = 0.003; OR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.50-0.90, p = 0.007, respectively) compared to those with GG genotype. These relations remained significant after adjustment for confounding effects of age, smoking, diabetes and hypertension. The rs1800775 polymorphism was significantly associated with serum levels of HDL-C in healthy controls (p = 0.04). Besides, rs708272 was in close linkage disequilibrium (LD) with rs1800775 in this study., Conclusions: Our findings indicated that CETP rs708272 may be associated with the risk of coronary atherosclerosis and rs1800775 may influence serum HDL-C levels in healthy controls in Chinese.
