This volume is dedicated to the memory of Harold Widom (1932–2021), an outstanding mathematician who has enriched mathematics with his ideas and ground breaking work since the 1950s until the present time. It contains a biography of Harold Widom, personal notes written by his former students or colleagues, and also his last, previously unpublished paper on domain walls in a Heisenberg–Ising chain. Widom's most famous contributions were made to Toeplitz operators and random matrices. While his work on random matrices is part of almost all the present-day research activities in this field, his work in Toeplitz operators and matrices was done mainly before 2000 and is therefore described in a contribution devoted to his achievements in just this area. The volume contains 18 invited and refereed research and expository papers on Toeplitz operators and random matrices. These present new results or new perspectives on topics related toWidom's work.

This book features a collection of up-to-date research papers that study various aspects of general operator algebra theory and concrete classes of operators, including a range of applications. Most of the papers included were presented at the International Workshop on Operator Algebras, Toeplitz Operators, and Related Topics, in Boca del Rio, Veracruz, Mexico, in November 2018. The conference, which was attended by more than 30 leading experts in the field, was held in celebration of Nikolai Vasilevski's 70th birthday, and the contributions are dedicated to him.

This volume contains selected papers authored by speakers and participants of the 2013 Arbeitstagung, held at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany, from May 22-28. The 2013 meeting (and this resulting proceedings) was dedicated to the memory of Friedrich Hirzebruch, who passed away on May 27, 2012. Hirzebruch organized the first Arbeitstagung in 1957 with a unique concept that would become its most distinctive feature: the program was not determined beforehand by the organizers, but during the meeting by all participants in an open discussion. This ensured that the talks would be on the latest developments in mathematics and that many important results were presented at the conference for the first time. Written by leading mathematicians, the papers in this volume cover various topics from algebraic geometry, topology, analysis, operator theory, and representation theory and display the breadth and depth of pure mathematics that has always been characteristic of the Arbeitstagung.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the Conference on Operator Theory and its Applications held in Gothenburg, Sweden, April 26-29, 2011. The conference was held in honour of Professor Victor Shulman on the occasion of his 65th birthday. The papers included in the volume cover a large variety of topics, among them the theory of operator ideals, linear preservers, C•-algebras, invariant subspaces, non-commutative harmonic analysis, and quantum groups, and reflect recent developments in these areas. The book consists of both original research papers and high quality survey articles, all of which were carefully refereed. ​

This volume is a collection of papers devoted to the 70th birthday of Professor Vladimir Rabinovich. The opening article (by Stefan Samko) includes a short biography of Vladimir Rabinovich, along with some personal recollections and bibliography of his work. It is followed by twenty research and survey papers in various branches of analysis (pseudodifferential operators and partial differential equations, Toeplitz, Hankel, and convolution type operators, variable Lebesgue spaces, etc.) close to Professor Rabinovich's research interests. Many of them are written by participants of the International workshop “Analysis, Operator Theory, and Mathematical Physics” (Ixtapa, Mexico, January 23–27, 2012) having a long history of scientific collaboration with Vladimir Rabinovich, and are partially based on the talks presented there.The volume will be of great interest to researchers and graduate students in differential equations, operator theory, functional and harmonic analysis, and mathematical physics.​

The theory of operators stands at the intersection of the frontiers of modern analysis and its classical counterparts; of algebra and quantum mechanics; of spectral theory and partial differential equations; of the modern global approach to topology and geometry; of representation theory and harmonic analysis; and of dynamical systems and mathematical physics. The present collection of papers represents contributions to a conference, and they have been carefully selected with a view to bridging different but related areas of mathematics which have only recently displayed an unexpected network of interconnections, as well as new and exciting cross-fertilizations. Our unify­ ing theme is the algebraic view and approach to the study of operators and their applications. The complementarity between the diversity of topics on the one hand and the unity of ideas on the other has been stressed. Some of the longer contributions represent material from lectures (in expanded form and with proofs for the most part). However, the shorter papers, as well as the longer ones, are an integral part of the picture; they have all been carefully refereed and revised with a view to a unity of purpose, timeliness, readability, and broad appeal. Since this topic is maybe less known to the operator theory community we mention that the support vector method is a general approach to function estimation problems. See [63, p. 26]. We note that the above list and the given references are by no way exhaustive. We refer to the first section of the paper of S. Saitoh in the present volume for another (and mainly different) list of topics where reproducing kernel spaces appear. Quite often a given question is best understood in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (for instance when using Cauchy's formula in the Hardy space H) 2 and one finds oneself as Mr Jourdain of Moliere'Bourgeois Gentilhomme speaking Prose without knowing it [48, p. 51]: Par ma foil il y a plus de quarante ans que je dis de la prose sans que l j'en susse rien.

Partial differential equations constitute an integral part of mathematics. They lie at the interface of areas as diverse as differential geometry, functional analysis, or the theory of Lie groups and have numerous applications in the applied sciences. A wealth of methods has been devised for their analysis. Over the past decades, operator algebras in connection with ideas and structures from geometry, topology, and theoretical physics have contributed a large variety of particularly useful tools. One typical example is the analysis on singular configurations, where elliptic equations have been studied successfully within the framework of operator algebras with symbolic structures adapted to the geometry of the underlying space. More recently, these techniques have proven to be useful also for studying parabolic and hyperbolic equations. Moreover, it turned out that many seemingly smooth, noncompact situations can be handled with the ideas from singular analysis. The three papers at the beginning of this volume highlight this aspect. They deal with parabolic equations, a topic relevant for many applications. The first article prepares the ground by presenting a calculus for pseudo differential operators with an anisotropic analytic parameter. In the subsequent paper, an algebra of Mellin operators on the infinite space-time cylinder is constructed. It is shown how timelike infinity can be treated as a conical singularity.

This is a collection of contributed papers which focus on recent results in areas of differential equations, function spaces, operator theory and interpolation theory. In particular, it covers current work on measures of non-compactness and real interpolation, sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalites, the HELP inequality, error estimates and spectral theory of elliptic operators, pseudo differential operators with discontinuous symbols, variable exponent spaces and entropy numbers. These papers contribute to areas of analysis which have been and continue to be heavily influenced by the leading British analysts David Edmunds and Des Evans. This book marks their respective 80th and 70th birthdays.

This volume contains twenty-one solicited articles by speakers at the IWOTA 2009 workshop, ranging from expository surveys to original research papers, each carefully refereed. The contributions reflect recent developments in operator theory and its applications. Consistent with the topics of recent IWOTA meetings, IWOTA 2009 was designed as a comprehensive, inclusive conference covering all aspects of theoretical and applied operator theory, ranging from classical analysis, differential and integral equations, complex and harmonic analysis to mathematical physics, mathematical systems and control theory, signal processing and numerical analysis. The conference brought together international experts for a week-long stay at Hotel Real de Minas, in an atmosphere conducive to fruitful professional interactions. These Proceedings reflect the high quality of the papers presented at the conference.

The present book is a memorial volume devoted to Peter Jonas. It displays recent advances in modern operator theory in Hilbert and Krein spaces and contains a collection of original research papers written by many well-known specialists in this field. The papers contain new results for problems close to the area of research of Peter Jonas: Spectral and perturbation problems for operators in inner product spaces, generalized Nevanlinna functions and definitizable functions, scattering theory, extension theory for symmetric operators, fixed points, hyperbolic matrix polynomials, moment problems, indefinite spectral and Sturm-Liouville problems, and invariant subspace problems. This book is written for researchers and postgraduates interested in functional analysis and differential operators.

Paul Richard Halmos, who lived a life of unbounded devotion to mathematics and to the mathematical community, died at the age of 90 on October 2, 2006. This volume is a memorial to Paul by operator theorists he inspired. Paul'sinitial research,beginning with his 1938Ph.D. thesis at the University of Illinois under Joseph Doob, was in probability, ergodic theory, and measure theory. A shift occurred in the 1950s when Paul's interest in foundations led him to invent a subject he termed algebraic logic, resulting in a succession of papers on that subject appearing between 1954 and 1961, and the book Algebraic Logic, published in 1962. Paul's?rst two papers in pure operator theory appeared in 1950. After 1960 Paul's research focused on Hilbert space operators, a subject he viewed as enc- passing?nite-dimensional linear algebra. Beyond his research, Paul contributed to mathematics and to its community in manifold ways: as a renowned expositor, as an innovative teacher, as a tireless editor, and through unstinting service to the American Mathematical Society and to the Mathematical Association of America. Much of Paul's in?uence?owed at a personal level. Paul had a genuine, uncalculating interest in people; he developed an enormous number of friendships over the years, both with mathematicians and with nonmathematicians. Many of his mathematical friends, including the editors ofthisvolume,whileabsorbingabundantquantitiesofmathematicsatPaul'sknee, learned from his advice and his example what it means to be a mathematician.

This monograph offers a self-contained introduction to the regularity theory for integro-differential elliptic equations, mostly developed in the 21st century. This class of equations finds relevance in fields such as analysis, probability theory, mathematical physics, and in several contexts in the applied sciences. The work gives a detailed presentation of all the necessary techniques, with a primary focus on the main ideas rather than on proving all the results in their greatest generality. The basic building blocks are presented first, with the study of the square root of the Laplacian, and weak solutions to linear equations. Subsequently, the theory of viscosity solutions to nonlinear equations is developed, and proofs are provided for the main known results in this context. The analysis finishes with the investigation of obstacle problems for integro-differential operators and establishes the regularity of solutions and free boundaries. A distinctive feature of this work lies in its presentation of nearly all covered material in a monographic format for the first time, and several proofs streamline, and often simplify, those in the original papers. Furthermore, various open problems are listed throughout the chapters.

This volume is dedicated to the memory of Sergey Naboko (1950-2020). In addition to original research contributions covering the vast areas of interest of Sergey Naboko, it includes personal reminiscences and comments on the works and legacy of Sergey Naboko's scientific achievements. Areas from complex analysis to operator theory, especially, spectral theory, are covered, and the papers will inspire current and future researchers in these areas.

This book is dedicated to Victor Emmanuilovich Katsnelson on the occasion of his 75th birthday and celebrates his broad mathematical interests and contributions.Victor Emmanuilovich's mathematical career has been based mainly at the Kharkov University and the Weizmann Institute. However, it also included a one-year guest professorship at Leipzig University in 1991, which led to him establishing close research contacts with the Schur analysis group in Leipzig, a collaboration that still continues today.Reflecting these three periods in Victor Emmanuilovich's career, present and former colleagues have contributed to this book with research inspired by him and presentations on their joint work. Boris Pavlov (1936-2016), to whom this volume is dedicated, was a prominent specialist in analysis, operator theory, and mathematical physics. As one of the most influential members of the St. Petersburg Mathematical School, he was one of the founders of the Leningrad School of Non-self-adjoint Operators. This volume collects research papers originating from two conferences that were organized in memory of Boris Pavlov: “Spectral Theory and Applications”, held in Stockholm, Sweden, in March 2016, and “Operator Theory, Analysis and Mathematical Physics – OTAMP2016” held at the Euler Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, in August 2016. The volume also includes water-color paintings by Boris Pavlov, some personal photographs, as well as tributes from friends and colleagues.

This book is the proceeding of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA) held in July 2018 in Shanghai, China. It consists of original papers, surveys and expository articles in the broad areas of operator theory, operator algebras and noncommutative topology. Its goal is to give graduate students and researchers a relatively comprehensive overview of the current status of research in the relevant fields. The book is also a special volume dedicated to the memory of Ronald G. Douglas who passed away on February 27, 2018 at the age of 79. This volume is devoted to Joseph A. (Joe) Ball's contributions to operator theory and its applications and in celebration of his seventieth birthday.Joe Ball's career spans over four and a half decades, starting with his work on model theory and related topics for non-contractions and operators on multiply connected domains. Later on, more applied operator theory themes appeared in his work, involving factorization and interpolation for operator-valued functions, with extensive applications in system and control theory. This monograph is devoted to covering the main results in the qualitative theory of symplectic difference systems, including linear Hamiltonian difference systems and Sturm-Liouville difference equations, with the emphasis on the oscillation and spectral theory. As a pioneer monograph in this field it contains nowadays standard theory of symplectic systems, as well as the most current results in this field, which are based on the recently developed central object - the comparative index. The book contains numerous results and citations, which were till now scattered only in journal papers. The book also provides new applications of the theory of matrices in this field, in particular of the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse matrices, orthogonal projectors, and symplectic matrix factorizations. This volume, which is dedicated to Heinz Langer, includes biographical material and carefully selected papers. Heinz Langer has made fundamental contributions to operator theory. In particular, he has studied the domains of operator pencils and nonlinear eigenvalue problems, the theory of indefinite inner product spaces, operator theory in Pontryagin and Krein spaces, and applications to mathematical physics. His works include studies on and applications of Schur analysis in the indefinite setting, where the factorization theorems put forward by Krein and Langer for generalized Schur functions, and by Dijksma-Langer-Luger-Shondin, play a key role. This book provides comprehensive information on the main aspects of Bernstein operators, based on the literature to date. Bernstein operators have a long-standing history and many papers have been written on them. Among all types of positive linear operators, they occupy a unique position because of their elegance and notable approximation properties. This book presents carefully selected material from the vast body of literature on this topic. In addition, it highlights new material, including several results (with proofs) appearing in a book for the first time. To facilitate comprehension, exercises are included at the end of each chapter. The book is largely self-contained and the methods in the proofs are kept as straightforward as possible. This book gathers contributions written by Daniel Alpay's friends and collaborators. Several of the papers were presented at the International Conference on Complex Analysis and Operator Theory held in honor of Professor Alpay's 60th birthday at Chapman University in November 2016. Spectral theory is an important part of functional analysis.It has numerous appli­ cations in many parts of mathematics and physics including matrix theory, func­ tion theory, complex analysis, differential and integral equations, control theory and quantum physics. In recent years, spectral theory has witnessed an explosive development. There are many types of spectra, both for one or several commuting operators, with important applications, for example the approximate point spectrum, Taylor spectrum, local spectrum, essential spectrum, etc. The present monograph is an attempt to organize the available material most of which exists only in the form of research papers scattered throughout the literature. The aim is to present a survey of results concerning various types of spectra in a unified, axiomatic way. The central unifying notion is that of a regularity, which in a Banach algebra is a subset of elements that are considered to be'nice'. A regularity R in a Banach algebra A defines the corresponding spectrum aR(a) = {A E C : a -,\ rJ. R} in the same way as the ordinary spectrum is defined by means of invertible elements, a(a) = {A E C : a -,\ rJ. Inv(A)}. Axioms of a regularity are chosen in such a way that there are many natural interesting classes satisfying them. At the same time they are strong enough for non-trivial consequences, for example the spectral mapping theorem.

This volume is devoted to the life and work of the applied mathematician Professor Erhard Meister (1930-2001). He was a member of the editorial boards of this book series Operator The­ ory: Advances and Applications as well as of the journal Integral Equations and Operator Theory, both published by Birkhauser (now part of Springer-Verlag). Moreover he played a decisive role in the foundation of these two series by helping to establish contacts between Birkhauser and the founder and present chief editor of this book series after his emigration from Moldavia in 1974. The volume is divided into two parts. Part A contains reminiscences about the life of E. Meister including a short biography and an exposition of his professional work. Part B displays the wide range of his scientific interests through eighteen original papers contributed by authors with close scientific and personal relations to E. Meister. We hope that a great part of the numerous features of his life and work can be re-discovered from this book.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Israel Gohberg (1928–2009) – one of the great mathematicians of our time – who inspired innumerable fellow mathematicians and directed many students. The volume reflects the wide spectrum of Gohberg's mathematical interests. It consists of more than 25 invited and peer-reviewed original research papers written by his former students, co-authors and friends. Included are contributions to single and multivariable operator theory, commutative and non-commutative Banach algebra theory, the theory of matrix polynomials and analytic vector-valued functions, several variable complex function theory, and the theory of structured matrices and operators. Also treated are canonical differential systems, interpolation, completion and extension problems, numerical linear algebra and mathematical systems theory.

This volume is dedicated to our teacher and friend Hans Triebel. The core of the book is based on lectures given at the International Conference'Function Spaces, Differential Operators and Nonlinear Analysis'(FSDONA--01) held in Teistungen, Thuringia / Germany, from June 28 to July 4,2001, in honour of his 65th birthday. This was the fifth in a series of meetings organised under the same name by scientists from Finland (Helsinki, Oulu), the Czech Republic (Prague, Plzen) and Germany (Jena) promoting the collaboration of specialists in East and West, working in these fields. This conference was a very special event because it celebrated Hans Triebel's extraordinary impact on mathematical analysis. The development of the mod­ ern theory of function spaces in the last 30 years and its application to various branches in both pure and applied mathematics is deeply influenced by his lasting contributions. In a series of books Hans Triebel has given systematic treatments of the theory of function spaces from different points of view, thus revealing its interdependence with interpolation theory, harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, nonlinear operators, entropy, spectral theory and, most recently, anal­ ysis on fractals. The presented collection of papers is a tribute to Hans Triebel's distinguished work. The book is subdivided into three parts: • Part I contains the two invited lectures by O.V. Besov (Moscow) and D.E. Edmunds (Sussex) having a survey character and honouring Hans Triebel's contributions.

Operator theory, system theory, scattering theory, and the theory of analytic functions of one complex variable are deeply related topics, and the relationships between these theories are well understood. When one leaves the setting of one operator and considers several operators, the situation is much more involved. There is no longer a single underlying theory, but rather different theories, some of them loosely connected and some not connected at all. These various theories, which one could call'multidimensional operator theory', are topics of active and intensive research.The present volume contains a selection of papers in multidimensional operator theory. Topics considered include the non-commutative case, function theory in the polydisk, hyponormal operators, hyperanalytic functions, and holomorphic deformations of linear differential equations.The volume will be of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians, electrical engineers and theoreticalphysicists.

The current volume gives an update on recent developments in the theory of pseudo-differential operators and related topics. The results collected here were presented at the Pseudo-Differential Operators and Related Topics (PSORT) 2024 Conference at Ghent University, Belgium, and cover a wide range of topics in pseudo-differential operators, microlocal analysis, time-frequency analysis, and related applications.

The present monograph serves as a natural extension of the prior 2-volume monograph with the same title and by the same authors, which encompassed findings up until 2014. This four-volume project encapsulates the authors'decade-long research in the trending topic of nonstandard function spaces and operator theory. One of the main novelties of the present book is to develop the extrapolation theory, generally speaking, in grand Banach function spaces, and to apply it for obtaining the boundedness of fundamental operators of harmonic analysis, in particular, function spaces such as grand weighted Lebesgue and Lorentz spaces, grand variable exponent Lebesgue/Morrey spaces, mixed normed function spaces, etc. Embeddings in grand variable exponent Hajłasz-Sobolev spaces are also studied. Some applications to the approximation theory and boundary value problems of analytic functions are presented as well. The book is aimed at an audience ranging from researchers in operator theory and harmonic analysis to experts in applied mathematics and post graduate students. In particular, we hope that this book will serve as a source of inspiration for researchers in abstract harmonic analysis, function spaces, PDEs and boundary value problems.

The book captures a fascinating snapshot of the current state of results about the operator-norm convergent Trotter-Kato Product Formulæ on Hilbert and Banach spaces. It also includes results on the operator-norm convergent product formulæ for solution operators of the non-autonomous Cauchy problems as well as similar results on the unitary and Zeno product formulæ.After the Sophus Lie product formula for matrices was established in 1875, it was generalised to Hilbert and Banach spaces for convergence in the strong operator topology by H. Trotter (1959) and then in an extended form by T. Kato (1978). In 1993 Dzh. L. Rogava discovered that convergence of the Trotter product formula takes place in the operator-norm topology. The latter is the main subject of this book, which is dedicated essentially to the operator-norm convergent Trotter-Kato Product Formulæ on Hilbert and Banach spaces, but also to related results on the time-dependent, unitary and Zeno product formulæ. The book yields a detailed up-to-date introduction into the subject that will appeal to any reader with a basic knowledge of functional analysis and operator theory. It also provides references to the rich literature and historical remarks.

This book is a tribute to the achievements of Ilya Spitkovsky in operator theory, pseudo-differential and integral equations, factorization theory and many other related topics. Ilya Spitkovsky started his career under the guidance of Mark Krein in Odessa, Ukraine. During these years, Ilya's rigorous and clear style of doing mathematics matured. Since 1990 Ilya Spitkovsky has been a professor of mathematics at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he has taught a wide range of courses, including linear algebra, real, complex, and functional analysis. He has authored more than 300 publications, including four research monographs, and edited eight books of proceedings. Ilya Spitkovsky is currently a member of the editorial board of five international journals. Since 2013 he is a professor of the Division of Science and Mathematics New York University Abu Dhabi, UAE. With this volume, the authors of the articles join the large family of people who congratulate Ilya Spitkovsky on his anniversary. It is their wish that the contributions in this volume offer inspiring insights to researchers working in these fields.

This book establishes a comprehensive theory to treat square roots of elliptic systems incorporating mixed boundary conditions under minimal geometric assumptions. To lay the groundwork, the text begins by introducing the geometry of locally uniform domains and establishes theory for function spaces on locally uniform domains, including interpolation theory and extension operators. In these introductory parts, fundamental knowledge on function spaces, interpolation theory and geometric measure theory and fractional dimensions are recalled, making the main content of the book easier to comprehend. The centerpiece of the book is the solution to Kato's square root problem on locally uniform domains. The Kato result is complemented by corresponding Lᵖ bounds in natural intervals of integrability parameters. This book will be useful to researchers in harmonic analysis, functional analysis and related areas.
