Aim: To explore from the perspective of women the nature of basic existential conditions while living with systemic lupus erythematosus., Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus has an unpredictable disease course and is documented to cause an existential rearrangement of life. The significance of changes in existential conditions and related experiences are unclear in the context of nursing and women with systemic lupus erythematosus., Design: A qualitative design guided by Van Manen's hermeneutic-phenomenological methodology., Method: Individual in-depth interviews with 15 women diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus and of various ages, disease durations and severities were undertaken from September 2013 - October 2015. Data were analysed following van Manen's phenomenological approach and using drawing as an interpretive tool., Findings: The main existential experience was interpreted as a person "moving with the waves of systemic lupus erythematosus" constituted by the themes "oscillating between presence and absence of systemic lupus erythematosus," "recognizing space and bodily possibilities and limitations" and "being enriched through relationships and activities." When systemic lupus erythematosus was flaring, well-being was threatened and a laborious time to escape the feeling of a setback-in-life persisted long after the disease was medically under control., Conclusion: Daily life with systemic lupus erythematosus is conditioned by a prominent need to be in existential motion, related to the absence and presence of systemic lupus erythematosus. The experience of a setback-in-life by illness might challenge well-being and indicates that periods of disease flares or disturbing symptoms are critical time points to provide support., (© 2018 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

The spread of the emerging pathogen Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 serovar A in Danish anguilliculture is reported. Serovar A was originally isolated in a Spanish eel farm in 2000 and occurred in Denmark in the summer of 2004, affecting eels of 5-10 g body weight cultured in fresh water. The Danish eels showed clinical signs different from those reported for Spanish eels, such as severe haemorrhages in the head and gill region with necrosis of the soft tissues. Danish isolates were biochemically and serologically identical to Spanish serovar A strains and also highly virulent for eels by both intraperitoneal injection and immersion challenges. Vaccination with Vulnivaccine, a vaccine against V. vulnificus serovar E, cross-protected eels against serovar A. The LD(50) for experimentally infected vaccinated animals was significantly higher than for non-vaccinated animals.

A total of 38 strains of atypical Aeromonas salmonicida, three oxidase-negative but otherwise typical Aer. salmonicida, three typical Aer. salmonicida, and two reference strains, isolated from several countries and fish species were examined with respect to rRNA gene restriction patterns (ribotypes) and plasmid profiles. Most epidemiologically unrelated strains had different ribotypes, whereas isolates from the same outbreak were identical. All strains, except one, carried one or more large plasmids (> 55 kbp) and all strains, except two, additionally carried one or more smaller plasmids. Many strains isolated from the same outbreak showed different plasmid profiles although some plasmids were identical. The results suggest the existence of several atypical Aer. salmonicida. It also seems that ribotypes are stable properties for these bacteria while the plasmids are more labile.

One hundred and twenty-nine strains of Vibrio anguillarum serovar O2 and 14 strains of Vibrio ordalii were ribotyped and examined for plasmid contents. A total of 35 different ribotypes were detected. The V. anguillarum serovar O2 strains were divided into 32 different ribotypes. The V. ordalii strains showed three different ribotypes, clearly distinct from those of the V. anguillarum strains. Ribotypes were separated into seven clusters, of which one comprised the V. ordalii strains. Clustering of the strains indicated a genetic difference between North European and South European V. anguillarum O2 strains. Sero-subgroups O2a and O2b shared ribotypes; however, three of the clusters did not include O2a strains. All V. ordalii strains had a plasmid of 32 kb. This plasmid was not detected in any of the V. anguillarum strains. Seventeen different plasmid profiles with 17 different sized plasmids were detected among the V. anguillarum strains. Most of the plasmids were small (< 6 kb) and found in several strains. Except for one South European strain, plasmids were detected only in the North European strains of V. anguillarum O2.

A total of 130 strains of the fish pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida isolated in Denmark, Norway, Scotland, Canada and the USA were examined. The strains originated from farmed salmonid fish. The biochemical, physiological and serological characteristics, antibiotic resistance patterns and cell surface-related properties were compared. Aeromonas salmonicida was found to be remarkably consistent in general cultural and biochemical characteristics. It is noteworthy that the strains were positive in the fermentation of L-arabinose and were negative in the fermentation of D-arabinose. All the strains were highly proteolytic. It was observed, however, that 5% of the strains did not digest calf and trout serum and the production of haemolysin and degradation of casein by the same strains were delayed compared with the other strains. Common to all of the rough strains were auto-aggregation and ability to bind the dyes Coomassie brilliant blue and Congo red and the majority of these strains were highly hydrophobic. The strains were tested for their susceptibility to 22 antibacterial agents. Antibiotic resistance profiles of Aer. salmonicida indicated that resistance to the quinolones and oxytetracycline was increasing and that multi-resistant strains were found in several countries. The variation found in antibiograms could have potential as epidemiological markers in certain geographic areas.

An analysis of the effect of growth conditions on the growth (O.D. values) of five Vibrio anguillarum strains showed that the optima were as follows: pH 7, temperature 25 degrees C, NaCl concentration 2%, and O.D. estimates increased with the incubation time. The independent parameters, as well as their interactions significantly influenced the growth of Vibrio anguillarum (P less than 0.0001). Only the strain-salinity interaction was not always statistically significant. A restriction of the parameters to a level relevant for Danish marine recipients showed that pH and NaCl concentration (salinity) might be of minor importance while the temperature was always of high significance. The possible impact of these observations on local conditions is discussed.

Five E. coli strains carrying K99 antigen isolated from the intestines of calves which had succumbed to diarrhoea and six K88-positive strains isolated from fatal cases of diarrhoea in piglets were examined for their mannose-resistant haemagglutination (MRHA) capacity against pig erythrocytes. The bovine strains showed a geometric mean MRHA-titre of 1/18 and the porcine strains one of 1/45. Similar experiments were carried out after addition of the following antibiotics in doubling dilutions: ampicillin, chloramphenicol, colistin, dihydrostreptomycin, gentamicin, neomycin, polymyxin B and oxytetracycline. Colistin and polymyxin B had a marked concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on MRHA. Neomycin and gentamicin also inhibited MRHA but to a lesser degree. Chloramphenicol, dihydrostreptomycin and oxytetracycline showed no effect. With ampicillin, a trend was found for the ratio values to be inversely proportional to the concentration. This suggests that this antibiotic has an enhancing effect on the haemagglutination.
