The article discusses the medical, surgical and catheter-based approaches to prevention of stroke in patients with non-rheumatic atrial fibrillation. Medical treatment of atrial fibrillation such as warfarin, combined antiplatelet therapy and direct thrombin inhibitors and surgical and cathether ablation of atrial fibrillation are discussed. It is concluded that left atrial appendage occlusion by catheter technique is a safe alternative for patients, who cannot tolerate blood-thinning treatment.
