One of the major evolutionary trends in flowering plants is the evolution of unisexual flowers (male or female) from perfect flowers. This transition has occurred repeatedly in many taxa and has generated a wonderful array of variation in sexual expression among species. Theoretical studies have proposed a number of mechanisms to explain how this level of variation could be maintained in natural systems. One possible mechanism is the female compensation hypothesis, which predicts that female mutants require an increase in their seed fitness in order to invade a hermaphroditic system. Using Geranium maculatum, I tested this hypothesis and showed that female mothers produced more and larger seeds than hermaphroditic mothers even though they were indistinguishable in their vegetative traits and the flower production. Seeds from females were also more likely to germinate and produced seedlings with larger above-and below ground biomass. These seedlings were more likely to flower than those from hermaphrodites in at least one of the two populations studied. Combined, these results indicated that females in G. maculatum did compensate for their loss of male function by producing more and better seeds than hermaphrodites. This provides a mechanism for the maintenance of female plants in this species. Inbreeding depression and selfing rates were investigated in Schiedea membranacea (Caryophyllaceae), a hermaphroditic species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Most theoretical models predict high inbreeding depression in outcrossing hermaphroditic species and low inbreeding depression in inbreeding species. Although high outcrossing rates and high levels of inbreeding depression are characteristic of many species of Schiedea, self- fertilization is common among relatives of hermaphroditic S. membranacea, and high selfing rates and low levels of inbreeding depression were predicted in this species. Sixteen individuals grown in the greenhouse were used to produce selfed and outcrossed progeny. Inbreeding depression, which was evident throughout the stages measured (percentage viable seeds per capsule, mean seed mass, percentage seed germination, percentage seedling survival, and biomass after 8 mo), averaged 0.70. Inbreeding depression among maternal families varied significantly for all measured traits and ranged from -0.12 to 0.97. Using isozyme analysis, the multilocus selfing rate varied from 0.13 to 0.38 over 4 yr. Contrary to the initial prediction of high selfing and low inbreeding depression based on phylogenetic relationships within Schiedea, low selfing rates and high levels of inbreeding depression were found in S. membranacea. These results indicate that outcrossing is stable in this species and maintained by high levels of inbreeding depression. The influence of outcrossing and pollination biology on the maintenance of hermaphroditism was studied for Schiedea lydgatei (Caryophyllaceae: Alsinoideae), a species endemic to Moloka'i in the Hawaiian Islands. Schiedea lydgatei is the only hermaphroditic species in an otherwise dimorphic clade and hermaphroditism is likely the result of a reversal from a gynodioecious ancestor. Both wind and native moths in the family Pyralidae are responsible for pollination in S. lydgatei. Outcrossing rates were generally high (0.80), especially in years when the greatest number of plants were flowering. The combination of high outcrossing rates and substantial inbreeding depression indicates that at present females would not be favored in the population. Pollination by both wind and insects is consistent with the hypothesis that hermaphroditism is the result of a relatively recent reversal, as the ancestor of S. lydgatei was probably wind pollinated and gynodioecious with few females in the populations. A shift from wind to predominately insect pollination on Moloka'i may have resulted in increased outcrossing rates and prevented the expression of high inbreeding depression among progeny of hermaphrodites, a condition that would select against females and favor a reversal to hermaphroditism. Because few females were likely to have been present in ancestral populations that colonized Moloka'i, founder effect is another potential explanation for loss of females. In either case, current high levels of outcrossing prevent re-establishment of females in populations of S. lydgatei. The evolution of gynodioecy from hermaphroditism involves modifications of floral structure such that male or female fitness is enhanced in hermaphrodites and females, respectively. We present an analysis of structural specialization of flowers of Ocotea tenera, in order to evaluate gender system evolution in this tropical tree species. Significant morphological and anatomical variation was found between high fruiting and low or nonfruiting trees. Female flowers were significantly smaller than hermaphroditic flowers, produced no viable pollen, and made relatively greater allocation to structures that increase female fitness. Hermaphroditic flowers were significantly larger than female flowers, produced copious quantities of pollen, and made relatively greater allocation to male structures. Analyses indicated that changes in allometries between whole-flower growth and growth of reproductive structures may have occurred, which enhance function of the flower and plant as a male or female. Efficiency of nutrient allocation for reproduction is argued to be a factor driving gender system evolution in Ocotea tenera. We estimated rates of self-fertilization and inbreeding depression in the hermaphroditic perennial Arabis fecunda. Crosses were made on mesh-bagged wild plants, yielding 12 plants producing self-, outcross-, and naturally fertilized seeds that were then grown in a greenhouse. Analysis of variance indicated aboveground dry weight at 160 days differed among pollination treatments, but mean seed weight, number of seeds per fruit, and days to germination did not. For dry weight, selfed progeny have 9.4% reduction and naturally pollinated progeny a 3.7% reduction compared to outcrossed progeny, suggesting a 39% selfing rate in Arabis. Significant inbreeding depression and a mixed mating system are evidence that the deleterious effects of self-fertilization are maintained through high rates of mildly deleterious mutation. Significant maternal-parent-by-pollination-treatment interactions for mean seed weight and dry weight are consistent with inbreeding depression caused by deleterious recessives and varying past maternal inbreeding.

Several workers have suggested that the rarity of androdioecy (the presence of males and hermaphrodites in a breeding population) in nature is due to the large fitness gain required by male plants in order to be maintained by selection. As part of an ongoing investigation of this hypothesis, we tested the effects of selfing on fitness in functionally androdioecious populations of Datisca glomerata. We compared progeny from self-fertilizations, cross-fertilizations with pollen from male plants only, cross-fertilizations with pollen from hermaphrodite plants only, and open-pollinated flowers for several measures of progeny fitness including seed weight, germination rate, and seedling weight. Significant inbreeding depression was observed for androdioecious populations of D. glomerata for both seed and seedling weights. However, no significant differences were observed across treatments for seed germination percentages. The observation of significant levels of inbreeding depression in this study, combined with prior evidence of threefold greater pollen production by males, may at least partially account for the large fitness increase required by males to be maintained by selection.

The selfing rate of hermaphrodites, inbreeding depression, and relative fecundity of females compared to hermaphrodites were estimated for a gynodioecious population of Chionographis japonica var. kurohimensis to test the models for the evolution of gynodioecy. In spite of the high level of selfing of hermaphrodites, significant amounts of inbreeding depression were found in seed germination and seedling growth. In addition, females produced more fertilized ovules than hermaphrodites. Nevertheless, the conditions theoretically required for maintaining gynodioecy were not satisfied even if the combined effect of these two factors was considered. Additional causes for the evolution of gynodioecy, including biparental inbreeding, are discussed.

The evolution of many floral traits, including monoecy and dichogamy, has been attributed to selection for avoidance of self-fertilization. If this explanation is correct, monoecy and dichogamy should be uncommon among self-incompatible species because physiological barriers prevent self-fertilization in such species. In fact, self-fertility was independent of sexual system in a sample of 588 hermaphroditic and monoecious angiosperms. Overall, dichogamy was also equally common among self-incompatible and self-compatible species. When the different forms of dichogamy were analyzed separately, only intrafloral protogyny was associated with self-compatibility. This form of dichogamy is less common among angiosperms than intrafloral protandry, which is probably less effective at reducing self-fertilization. Thus, avoidance of self-fertilization has probably been less important in the evolution of monoecy and most forms of dichogamy than other factors, such as avoidance of pollen-pistil interference, and flexibility of resource allocation to male and female functions.

This study documents the comparative success of seeds and seedlings of the perennial gynodioecious-gynomonoecious weed, Silene vulgaris, in the greenhouse. The importance of experimental design is stressed by comparing two different statistical analyses of the data. Seeds were obtained from artificial pollinations in the field: self-fertilization of hermaphrodites, and cross-fertilizations of both hermaphrodites and females. One-way analysis of variance using progeny type (selfed hermaphrodites, outcrossed hermaphrodites, and outcrossed females) as the treatment effect for each seed and seedling variable showed statistically discernable differences among progeny from different cross types. The significance of this type of ANOVA resulted from a reduced error term and positively-biased F ratios. A factorial design showed no significant differences due to type of progeny in seed mass, days to germination, leaf number, area, or biomass at six weeks of age. There were, however, significant differences among seeds attributable to maternal parent for all seed and seedling variables. A higher proportion of seeds from outcrossed individuals germinated compared to that from self-fertilization. When the data were analyzed to include and partition all sources of variation, differences among offspring appeared during germination, rather than during later development. Seed mass, cross type, and sex of maternal parent all significantly affected the likelihood of germination; however, they had decreasing predictive power, respectively. Inbreeding depression in Silene vulgaris may help maintain gynodioecy; however, the pleiotropic effects of both nuclear and cytoplasmic genes for sex expression also may affect fitness and the maintenance of females.
