In the present work, a stability analysis of the bottom boundary layer under solitary waves based on energy bounds and non-modal theory is performed. The instability mechanism of this flow consists of a competition between streamwise streaks and two-dimensional perturbations. For lower Reynolds numbers and early times, streamwise streaks display larger amplification due to their quadratic dependence on the Reynolds number, whereas two-dimensional perturbations become dominant for larger Reynolds numbers and later times in the deceleration region of this flow, as the maximum amplification of two-dimensional perturbations grows exponentially with the Reynolds number. By means of the present findings, we can give some indications on the physical mechanism and on the interpretation of the results by direct numerical simulation in Vittori & Blondeaux (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 615, 2008, pp. 433-443) and Özdemir et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 731, 2013, pp. 545-578) and by experiments in Sumer et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 646, 2010, pp. 207-231). In addition, three critical Reynolds numbers can be defined for which the stability properties of the flow change. A fundamental study has been conducted to understand the front characteristics and the mixing in the flow of density currents over rough surfaces. A large-eddy simulation (LES) has been performed for lock-exchange release density currents over rough walls to shed light on the unsteady mixing processes. A volume-penalization method, which is a special case of the immersed-boundary method, has been implemented to realize the bottom-mounted rough topology. In this study, the LES has been conducted in a channel with a lower wall covered with three-dimensional cube- and pyramid-shaped roughness elements, such that all cases have the same base area, but differences in the roughness solidity and volume fraction of roughness. Both cases of identical roughness elements and those with randomness in height have been considered. The maximum roughness height for all cases is kept at a constant fraction (10 %) of the total channel height. The study focuses on the instantaneous mixing processes in lock-exchange release currents over rough surfaces. An important contribution of the work is that qualitative and quantitative analysis has been conducted to demonstrate additional mixing mechanisms due to the presence of surface roughness that enhances dilution of the current. Enhanced mixing due to roughness is related to the strength of the shear layer resulting from the roughness, and hence depends on friction Reynolds number (ReT). Flow over bottom topography at critical Froude number is examined with a focus on steady, forced solitary wave solutions with algebraic decay in the far field, and their stability. Using the forced Korteweg-de Vries (fKdV) equation the weakly nonlinear steady solution space is examined in detail for the particular case of a Gaussian dip using a combination of asymptotic analysis and numerical computations. Non-uniqueness is established and a seemingly infinite set of steady solutions is uncovered. Non-uniqueness is also demonstrated for the fully nonlinear problem via boundary-integral calculations. It is shown analytically that critical flow solutions have algebraic decay in the far field both for the fKdV equation and for the fully nonlinear problem and, moreover, that the leading-order form of the decay is the same in both cases. The linear stability of the steady fKdV solutions is examined via eigenvalue computations and by a numerical study of the initial value fKdV problem. It is shown that there exists a linearly stable steady solution in which the deflection from the otherwise uniform surface level is everywhere negative. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider a non-local version of the Cahn–Hilliard equation characterized by the presence of a fractional diffusion operator, and which is subject to fractional dynamic boundary conditions. Our system generalizes the classical system in which the dynamic boundary condition was used to describe any relaxation dynamics of the order-parameter at the walls. The proposed fractional dynamic boundary condition appears to be more general in the sense that it incorporates non-local effects which were completely ignored in the classical approach. We analyse acoustic streaming flows using an arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) perspective. The formulation stems from an explicit separation of time scales resulting in two subproblems: a first-order problem, formulated in terms of the fluid displacement at the fast scale, and a second-order problem, formulated in terms of the Lagrangian flow velocity at the slow time scale. Following a rigorous time-averaging procedure, the second-order problem is shown to be intrinsically steady, and with exact boundary conditions at the oscillating walls. Also, as the second-order problem is solved directly for the Lagrangian velocity, the formulation does not need to employ the notion of Stokes drift, or any associated post-processing, thus facilitating a direct comparison with experiments. Because the first-order problem is formulated in terms of the displacement field, our formulation is directly applicable to more complex fluid–structure interaction problems in microacoustofluidic devices. We consider the dynamics of an axisymmetric, partially wetting droplet of a one-component volatile liquid. The droplet is supported on a smooth superheated substrate and evaporates into a pure vapour atmosphere. In this process, we take the liquid properties to be constant and assume that the vapour phase has poor thermal conductivity and small dynamic viscosity so that we may decouple its dynamics from the dynamics of the liquid phase. This leads to a so-called 'one-sided' lubrication-type model for the evolution of the droplet thickness, which accounts for the effects of evaporation, capillarity, gravity, slip and kinetic resistance to evaporation. By asymptotically matching the flow near the contact line region and the bulk of the droplet in the limit of a small slip length and commensurably small evaporation and kinetic resistance effects, we obtain coupled evolution equations for the droplet radius and volume. The predictions of our asymptotic analysis, which also include an estimate of the evaporation time, are found to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations of the governing lubrication model for a broad range of parameter regimes. Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ be a domain in $\mathbb{R}^{m}$ with nonempty boundary. In Ward [‘On essential self-adjointness, confining potentials and the $L_{p}$-Hardy inequality’, PhD Thesis, NZIAS Massey University, New Zealand, 2014] and [‘The essential self-adjointness of Schrödinger operators on domains with non-empty boundary’, Manuscripta Math.150(3) (2016), 357–370] it was shown that the Schrödinger operator $H=-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}+V$, with domain of definition $D(H)=C_{0}^{\infty }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$ and $V\in L_{\infty }^{\text{loc}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$, is essentially self-adjoint provided that $V(x)\geq (1-\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{2}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}))/d(x)^{2}$. Here $d(x)$ is the Euclidean distance to the boundary and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{2}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$ is the nonnegative constant associated to the $L_{2}$-Hardy inequality. The conditions required for a domain to admit an $L_{2}$-Hardy inequality are well known and depend intimately on the Hausdorff or Aikawa/Assouad dimension of the boundary. We study a free boundary problem for the Fisher-KPP equation: ut = uxx + f(u) (g(t) < x < h(t)) with free boundary conditions h′(t) = −ux(t, h(t)) − α and g′(t) = −ux(t, g(t)) + β for 0 < β < α. This problem can model the spreading of a biological or chemical species, where free boundaries represent the spreading fronts of the species. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of bounded solutions. There are two parameters α0 and α* with 0 < α0 < α* which play key roles in the dynamics. We consider a single server system accepting two types of retrial customers, which arrive according to two independent Poisson streams. The service station can handle at most one customer, and in case of blocking, type i customer, i=1, 2, is routed to a separate type i orbit queue of infinite capacity. Customers from the orbits try to access the server according to the constant retrial policy. We consider coupled orbit queues, and thus, when both orbit queues are non-empty, the orbit queue i tries to re-dispatch a blocked customer of type i to the main service station after an exponentially distributed time with rate μi. If an orbit queue empties, the other orbit queue changes its re-dispatch rate from μi to $\mu_{i}^{\ast}$. We consider both exponential and arbitrary distributed service requirements, and show that the probability generating function of the joint stationary orbit queue length distribution can be determined using the theory of Riemann (–Hilbert) boundary value problems. For exponential service requirements, we also investigate the exact tail asymptotic behavior of the stationary joint probability distribution of the two orbits with either an idle or a busy server by using the kernel method. A cross-diffusion system modelling the information herding of individuals is analysed in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions. The variables are the species' density and an influence function which modifies the information state of the individuals. The cross-diffusion term may stabilize or destabilize the system. Furthermore, it allows for a formal gradient-flow or entropy structure. Exploiting this structure, the global-in-time existence of weak solutions and the exponential decay to the constant steady state is proved in certain parameter regimes. This approach does not extend to all parameters. We investigate local bifurcations from homogeneous steady states analytically to determine whether this defines the validity boundary. This analysis shows that generically there is a gap in the parameter regime between the entropy approach validity and the first local bifurcation. Next, we use numerical continuation methods to track the bifurcating non-homogeneous steady states globally and to determine non-trivial stationary solutions related to herding behaviour. In summary, we find that the main boundaries in the parameter regime are given by the first local bifurcation point, the degeneracy of the diffusion matrix and a certain entropy decay validity condition. We study several parameter limits analytically as well as numerically, with a focus on the role of changing a linear damping parameter as well as a parameter controlling the cross-diffusion. We suggest that our paradigm of comparing bifurcation-generated obstructions to the parameter validity of global-functional methods could also be of relevance for many other models beyond the one studied here. We construct a ‘structure invariant’ of a one-ended, finitely presented group that describes the way in which the factors of its JSJ decomposition over two-ended subgroups fit together. For hyperbolic groups satisfying a very general condition, these invariants completely reduce the problem of classifying such groups up to quasi-isometry to a relative quasi-isometry classification of the factors of their JSJ decomposition. Under some additional assumption, our results extend to more general finitely presented groups, yielding a far-reaching generalisation of the quasi-isometry classification of some 3–manifolds obtained by Behrstock and Neumann.The same approach also allows us to obtain such a reduction for the problem of determining when two hyperbolic groups have homeomorphic Gromov boundaries. We develop a modulus method for surface families inside a domain in the Heisenberg group and we prove that the stretch map between two Heisenberg spherical rings is a minimiser for the mean distortion among the class of contact quasiconformal maps between these rings which satisfy certain boundary conditions. Linear stability of a laminar boundary-layer flow in a streamwise corner can only be treated with an ansatz that considers two-dimensional eigenfunctions with inhomogeneous boundary conditions in cross-flow directions. It is common practice to use Sommerfeld's radiation condition with a certain wavenumber β at the lateral domains of the integration domain which are at the same time the far-field domains for each wall. So far, this radiation condition has been exclusively used in a 'symmetrical' way, i.e. with the same β on either far-field boundary plane. This has led to wave patterns that either enter or leave the corner region from the lateral sides for β <0 or β > 0 respectively. Here, an 'asymmetric' use of Sommerfeld's radiation condition is suggested, i.e. β <0 on one far side of the corner and β >0 on the other. With this modification, waves enter the corner area from one side and leave it through the other, i.e. they travel obliquely through the corner. In contrast to before, their amplification rate is always symmetric with respect to β = 0 and there is no amplification-rate increase or decrease due to information that either continuously enters the corner from both sides or continuously leaves it through the far sides. The present analysis also shows that the inviscid corner modes are unaffected by the parameters of the far-field radiation boundary conditions. Nevertheless, superposition of two oppositely running single waves obtained by the modified application of the radiation condition leads to a similar wave pattern to that in the case with β < 0 on both sides; however, with a slightly smaller amplification rate and a strictly streamwise propagation direction. Within the framework of variational modelling we derive a one-phase moving boundary problem describing the motion of a semipermeable membrane enclosing a viscous liquid, driven by osmotic pressure and surface tension of the membrane. Rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection, the flow in a rotating fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above, is used to analyse the transition to the geostrophic regime of thermal convection. In the geostrophic regime, which is of direct relevance to most geo- and astrophysical flows, the system is strongly rotating while maintaining a sufficiently large thermal driving to generate turbulence. We directly simulate the Navier-Stokes equations for two values of the thermal forcing, i.e. Ra=1010 and Ra=5×1010, at constant Prandtl number Pr=1, and vary the Ekman number in the range Ek=1.3×10-7 to Ek=2×10-6, which satisfies both requirements of supercriticality and strong rotation. We focus on the differences between the application of no-slip versus stress-free boundary conditions on the horizontal plates. The transition is found at roughly the same parameter values for both boundary conditions, i.e. at Ek≈9×10-7 for Ra=1×1010 and at Ek≈3×10-7 for Ra=5×1010. However, the transition is gradual and it does not exactly coincide in Ek for different flow indicators. In particular, we report the characteristics of the transitions in the heat-transfer scaling laws, the boundary-layer thicknesses, the bulk/boundary-layer distribution of dissipations and the mean temperature gradient in the bulk. The flow phenomenology in the geostrophic regime evolves differently for no-slip and stress-free plates. For stress-free conditions, the formation of a large-scale barotropic vortex with associated inverse energy cascade is apparent. For no-slip plates, a turbulent state without large-scale coherent structures is found; the absence of large-scale structure formation is reflected in the energy transfer in the sense that the inverse cascade, present for stress-free boundary conditions, vanishes. The accuracy of existing impedance boundary conditions is investigated, and new impedance boundary conditions are derived, for lined ducts with inviscid shear flow. The accuracy of the Ingard-Myers boundary condition is found to be poor. Matched asymptotic expansions are used to derive a boundary condition accurate to second order in the boundary layer thickness, which shows substantially increased accuracy for thin boundary layers when compared with both the Ingard-Myers boundary condition and its recent first-order correction. Closed-form approximate boundary conditions are also derived using a single Runge-Kutta step to solve an impedance Ricatti equation, leading to a boundary condition that performs reasonably even for thicker boundary layers. An observed, spectacular and puzzling distinctive feature of wall-bounded flows transitioning to/from turbulence is the large-scale ordered coexistence of laminar and turbulent flow over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. In their article, Chantry et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 791, 2016, R8) circumvent the problem of turbulence modulation in genuine plane Couette flow by replacing no-slip boundary conditions at the walls with effective stress-free conditions constraining the interior part of the flow only. In so doing, they are able to collect relevant information on the laminar-turbulent patterning. The approach is then adapted to plane Poiseuille and pipe flow, giving to it a more universal value. Taking advantage of the stress-free conditions, they derive reduced models efficient at capturing the laminar-turbulent coexistence. A nonlinear stability analysis of the viscous circular Couette flow to axisymmetric finite-amplitude perturbations under axial periodic boundary conditions is developed. The analysis is based on investigating the properties of a reduced Arnol'd energy- Casimir function Ard of Wang (Phys. Fluids, vol. 2, 2009, 084104). A weighted kinetic energy of the perturbation, which has a form of ΔArd, the difference between the reduced Arnol'd function and its base flow value, is used as a Lyapunov function. We show that all the inviscid flow effects as well as all the viscous-dependent terms that are related to the flow boundaries vanish. The evolution of ΔArd depends only on the viscous effects of the perturbation's dynamics inside the flow domain. The requirement for the temporal decay of ΔArd leads to two novel sufficient conditions for the nonlinear stability of the circular Couette flow in response to axisymmetric perturbations. The linearized version of these conditions for infinitesimally small perturbations recovers the recent linear stability results by Kloosterziel (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 652, 2010, pp. 171-193). By examining the nonlinear stability conditions, we establish a definite operational region of the viscous circular Couette flow that is independent of the fluid viscosity. In this region of operation, the flow is nonlinearly stable in response to perturbations of any size, provided that the initial total circulation function is above a minimum level determined by the operational conditions of the base flow. Comparisons with historical studies show that our results shed light on the experimental measurements of Wendt (Ing.-Arch., vol. 4, 1933, pp. 577-595) and extend the classical nonlinear stability results of Serrin (Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal., vol. 3, 1959, pp. 1-13) and Joseph & Hung (Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal., vol. 44, 1971, pp. 1-22). When the flow is nonlinearly stable and evolves axisymmetrically for all time, then it always decays asymptotically in time to the circular Couette flow determined uniquely by the set-up of the rotating cylinders. Finally, we derive upper-bound estimates on the decay rate of finite-amplitude perturbations for the solid-body rotation flow between two coaxial rotating cylinders and for the circular Couette flow. We demonstrate via numerical simulations that the theoretical upper bound is relevant to the dynamics of various axisymmetric perturbations tested, where it is strictly obeyed. We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with periodic boundary conditions and time-independent forcing. For this type of flow, we derive adjoint equations whose trajectories converge asymptotically to the equilibrium and travellingwave solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. Using the adjoint equations, arbitrary initial conditions evolve to the vicinity of a (relative) equilibrium at which point a few Newton-type iterations yield the desired (relative) equilibrium solution. We apply this adjoint-based method to a chaotic two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow. A convergence rate of 100% is observed, leading to the discovery of 21 new steady-state and travelling-wave solutions at Reynolds number Re = 40. Some of the new invariant solutions have spatially localized structures that were previously believed to exist only on domains with large aspect ratios. We show that one of the newly found steady-state solutions underpins the temporal intermittencies, i.e. high energy dissipation episodes of the flow. More precisely, it is shown that each intermittent episode of a generic turbulent trajectory corresponds to its close passage to this equilibrium solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A mechanical system consisting of water covered by brash ice and a body freely floating near equilibrium is considered. The water occupies a half-space into which an infinitely long surface-piercing cylinder is immersed, thus allowing us to study two-dimensional modes of the coupled motion, which is assumed to be of small amplitude. The corresponding linear setting for time-harmonic oscillations reduces to a spectral problem whose parameter is the frequency. A constant that characterises the brash ice divides the set of frequencies into two subsets and the results obtained for each of these subsets are essentially different. For frequencies belonging to a finite interval adjacent to zero, the total energy of motion is finite and the equipartition of energy holds for the whole system. For every frequency from this interval, a family of motionless bodies trapping waves is constructed by virtue of the semi-inverse procedure. The potential for anticipated destruction of a counter-rotating vortex pair using the linear optimal perturbation of the Crow instability is assessed. Direct numerical simulation is used to study the development of the Crow instability and the subsequent evolution of the flow up to 30 characteristic times at a circulation-based Reynolds number of 1000. The conventional development of the instability leads to multiple contortions of the vortices including the linear growth of sinusoidal deformation, vortex linking and the formation of vortex rings. A new evolution stage is identified, succeeding this well-established sequence: the vortex rings undergo periodic oscillation. Two complete periods are simulated during which the vortical system is hardly altered, thereby demonstrating the extraordinary resilience of the vortices. The possibility of preventing these dynamics using the linear optimal perturbation of the Crow instability, the adjoint mode, is analysed. By appropriately setting the forcing amplitude, the lifetime of the vortices until their loss of coherence is reduced to approximately 13 characteristic times, which is less than half that of the natural Crow behaviour observed with infinitesimal forcing. The dynamics of the flow induced by the linear optimal perturbation that enable this result are connected to processes already known to efficiently alter vortical flows, in particular transient growth and four-vortex dynamics. We present a high-order upwind finite volume element method to solve optimal control problems governed by first-order hyperbolic equations. The method is efficient and easy for implementation. Both the semi-discrete error estimates and the fully discrete error estimates are derived. Optimal order error estimates in the sense of $L^{2}$-norm are obtained. To simulate a glacial lake outburst flood, we employ a comprehensive physically based general two-phase mass flow model (Pudasaini, 2012). This model accounts for a strong interaction between the solid and fluid phases and incorporates buoyancy and other dominant physical aspects of the mass flows such as enhanced non-Newtonian viscous stress, virtual mass force and generalized drag. Our real two-phase mass flow simulation describes explicit evolution of the solid and fluid phases and the debris bulk as a whole, akin to torrential debris flows or debris floods during glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). The emptying of a lake following rapid collapse of a restraining dam, the consequent downslope motion of a mixed solid–fluid mass, and the tendency of the mass to form extruding plumes are analyzed in detail for different flow configurations, volumes, conduit geometries and boundary conditions. The solid and fluid phases evolve completely differently and reveal fundamentally different dynamical behaviours. During the flow, the relatively long fluid tail follows the solid-rich dense frontal surge head. The bulk debris develops into a frontal and side levee as derived from the initial frontal moraine dam. Results show that our high-resolution, unified simulation strategies and the advanced model equations can be applied to study the flow dynamics of a wide range of geophysical mass flows such as snow and rock–ice avalanches, debris flows and flash floods as well as GLOFs. Density dependent Markov population processes in large populations of size N were shown by Kurtz (1970), (1971) to be well approximated over finite time intervals by the solution of the differential equations that describe their average drift, and to exhibit stochastic fluctuations about this deterministic solution on the scale √N that can be approximated by a diffusion process. Here, motivated by an example from evolutionary biology, we are concerned with describing how such a process leaves an absorbing boundary. Initially, one or more of the populations is of size much smaller than N, and the length of time taken until all populations have sizes comparable to N then becomes infinite as N → ∞. Under suitable assumptions, we show that in the early stages of development, up to the time when all populations have sizes at least N1-α for 1/3 < α < 1, the process can be accurately approximated in total variation by a Markov branching process. Thereafter, it is well approximated by the deterministic solution starting from the original initial point, but with a random time delay. Superhydrophobic surfaces can entrap gas pockets within their grooves when submerged in water. Such a mixed-phase boundary is shown to result in an effective slip velocity on the surface, and has promising potential for drag reduction and energy-saving in hydrodynamic applications. The target flow regime, in most such applications, is a turbulent flow. Previous analyses of this problem involved direct numerical simulations of turbulence with the superhydrophobic surface modelled as a flat boundary, but with a heterogeneous mix of slip and no-slip boundary conditions corresponding to the surface texture. Analysis of the kinematic data from these simulations has helped to establish the magnitude of drag reduction for various texture topologies. The present work is the first investigation that, alongside a kinematic investigation, addresses the robustness of superhydrophobic surfaces by studying the load fields obtain from data from direct numerical simulations (DNS). The key questions at the focus of this work are: does a superhydrophobic surface induce a different pressure field compared to a flat surface? If so, how does this difference scale with system parameters, and when does it become significant that it can deform the air-water interface and potentially rapture the entrapped gas pockets? To this end, we have performed DNS of turbulent channel flows subject to superhydrophobic surfaces over a wide range of texture sizes spanning values from L+ = 6 to L+ = 155 when expressed in terms of viscous units. The pressure statistics at the wall are decomposed into two contributions: one coherent, caused by the stagnation of slipping flow hitting solid posts, and one time-dependent, caused by overlying turbulence. The results show that the larger texture size intensifies the contribution of stagnation pressure, while the contribution from turbulence is essentially insensitive to L+. The two-dimensional stagnation pressure distribution at the wall and the pressure statistics in the wall-normal direction are found to be self-similar for different L+. The scaling of the induced pressure and the consequent deformations of the air-water interface are analysed. Based on our results, an upper bound on the texture wavelength is quantified that limits the range of robust operation of superhydrophobic surfaces when exposed to high-speed flows. Our results indicate that when the system parameters are expressed in terms of viscous units, the main parameters controlling the problem are L+ and a Weber number based on inner dimensions; We obtain good collapse when all our results are expressed in wall units, independently of the Reynolds number. We consider Hele-Shaw flows driven by injection of a highly shear-thinning power-law fluid (of exponent n) in the absence of surface tension. We formulate the problem in terms of the streamfunction ψ, which satisfies the p-Laplacian equation ∇·(|∇ψ|p−2∇ψ) = 0 (with p = (n+1)/n) and use the method of matched asymptotic expansions in the large n (extreme-shear-thinning) limit to find an approximate solution. The results show that significant flow occurs only in (I) segments of a (single) circle centred on the injection point, whose perimeters comprise the portion of free boundary closest to the injection point and (II) an exponentially small region around the injection point and (III) a transition region to the rest of the fluid: while the flow in the latter is exponentially slow it can be characterised in detail. We consider a two-layer fluid of finite depth with a free surface and, in particular, the surface tension at the free surface and the interface. The usual assumptions of a linearized theory are considered. The objective of this work is to analyse the effect of surface tension on trapped modes, when a horizontal circular cylinder is submerged in either of the layers of a two-layer fluid. By setting up boundary value problems for both of the layers, we find the frequencies for which trapped waves exist. Then, we numerically analyse the effect of variation of surface tension parameters on the trapped modes, and conclude that realistic changes in surface tension do not have a significant effect on the frequencies of these. A major obstacle in designing a perfect cloak for objects in shallow-water waves is that the linear transformation media scheme (also known as transformation optics) requires spatial variations of two independent medium properties. In the Maxwell’s equation and for the well-studied problem of electromagnetic cloaking, these two properties are permittivity and permeability. Designing an anisotropic material with both variable permittivity and variable permeability, while challenging, is achievable. On the other hand, for long gravity waves, whose governing equation maps one-to-one to the single polarization Maxwell’s equations, the two required spatially variable properties are the water depth and the gravitational acceleration; in this case changing the gravitational acceleration is simply impossible. Here we present a nonlinear transformation that only requires the change in one of the medium properties, which, in the case of shallow-water waves, is the water depth, while keeping the gravitational acceleration constant. This transformation keeps the governing equation perfectly intact and, if the cloak is large enough, asymptotically satisfies the necessary boundary conditions. We show that with this nonlinear transformation an object can be cloaked from any wave that merely satisfies the long-wave assumption. Of concern is the stability and bifurcation analysis of a free boundary problem modelling the growth of multi-layer tumours. A remarkable feature of this problem lies in that the free boundary is imposed with nonlinear boundary conditions, where a Gibbs–Thomson relation is taken into account. By employing a functional approach, analytic semigroup theory and bifurcation theory, we prove that there exists a positive threshold value γ* of surface tension coefficient γ such that if γ > γ* then the unique flat stationary solution is asymptotically stable under non-flat perturbations, while for γ < γ* this unique flat stationary solution is unstable and there exists a series of non-flat stationary solutions bifurcating from it. More and more experimental evidence demonstrates that the slip boundary condition plays an important role in the study of nano- or micro-scale fluid. We propose a homogenization approach to study the effective slippage problem. We show that the effective slip length obtained by homogenization agrees with the results obtained by the traditional method in the literature for the simplest Stokes flow; then we use our approach to deal with two examples which seem quite hard by other analytical methods. We examine two- and three-dimensional drops steadily sliding down an inclined plate. The contact line of the drop is governed by a model based on the Navier-slip boundary condition and a prescribed value for the contact angle. The drop is thin, so the lubrication approximation can be used. In the three-dimensional case, we also assume that the drop is sufficiently small (its size is smaller than the capillary scale). These assumptions enable us to determine the shape of the drop and derive an asymptotic expression for its velocity. For three-dimensional drops, this expression is matched to a qualitative estimate of Kim et al. (J. Colloid Interface Sci., vol. 247, 2002, pp. 372–380) obtained for arbitrary drops, i.e. not necessarily thin and small. We consider a diffuse interface model of tumour growth proposed by A. Hawkins-Daruud et al. ((2013) J. Math. Biol.67 1457–1485). This model consists of the Cahn–Hilliard equation for the tumour cell fraction ϕ nonlinearly coupled with a reaction–diffusion equation for ψ, which represents the nutrient-rich extracellular water volume fraction. The coupling is expressed through a suitable proliferation function p(ϕ) multiplied by the differences of the chemical potentials for ϕ and ψ. The system is equipped with no-flux boundary conditions which give the conservation of the total mass, that is, the spatial average of ϕ + ψ. Here, we prove the existence of a weak solution to the associated Cauchy problem, provided that the potential F and p satisfy sufficiently general conditions. Then we show that the weak solution is unique and continuously depends on the initial data, provided that p satisfies slightly stronger growth restrictions. Also, we demonstrate the existence of a strong solution and that any weak solution regularizes in finite time. We examine the effect of a kinetic undercooling condition on the evolution of a free boundary in Hele-Shaw flow, in both bubble and channel geometries. We present analytical and numerical evidence that the bubble boundary is unstable and may develop one or more corners in finite time, for both expansion and contraction cases. This loss of regularity is interesting because it occurs regardless of whether the less viscous fluid is displacing the more viscous fluid, or vice versa. We show that small contracting bubbles are described to leading order by a well-studied geometric flow rule. Exact solutions to this asymptotic problem continue past the corner formation until the bubble contracts to a point as a slit in the limit. Lastly, we consider the evolving boundary with kinetic undercooling in a Saffman-Taylor channel geometry. The boundary may either form corners in finite time, or evolve to a single long finger travelling at constant speed, depending on the strength of kinetic undercooling. We demonstrate these two different behaviours numerically. For the travelling finger, we present results of a numerical solution method similar to that used to demonstrate the selection of discrete fingers by surface tension. With kinetic undercooling, a continuum of corner-free travelling fingers exists for any finger width above a critical value, which goes to zero as the kinetic undercooling vanishes. We have not been able to compute the discrete family of analytic solutions, predicted by previous asymptotic analysis, because the numerical scheme cannot distinguish between solutions characterised by analytic fingers and those which are corner-free but non-analytic. We construct a representation of each finitely aligned aperiodic k-graph Λ on the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}^{\rm ap}$ with basis indexed by aperiodic boundary paths in Λ. We show that the canonical expectation on $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}^{\rm ap})$ restricts to an expectation of the image of this representation onto the subalgebra spanned by the final projections of the generating partial isometries. We then show that every quotient of the Toeplitz algebra of the k-graph admits an expectation compatible with this one. Using this, we prove that the image of our representation, which is canonically isomorphic to the Cuntz–Krieger algebra, is co-universal for Toeplitz–Cuntz–Krieger families consisting of non-zero partial isometries. The behaviour of two-dimensional finite blobs of conducting viscous fluid in a Hele-Shaw cell subject to an electric field is considered. The time-dependent free boundary problem is studied both analytically using the Schwarz function of the free boundary and numerically using a boundary integral method. Various problems are considered, including (i) the behaviour of an initially circular blob of conducting fluid subject to an electric point charge located arbitrarily within the blob, (ii) the delay in cusp formation on the free boundary in sink-driven flow due to a strategically placed electric charge and (iii) the stability of exact steady solutions having both hydrodynamic and electric forcing. We develop a mathematical model for a three-phase free boundary problem in one dimension that involves interactions between gas, water and ice. The dynamics are driven by melting of the ice layer, while the pressurized gas also dissolves within the meltwater. The model incorporates the Stefan condition at the water–ice interface along with Henry's law for dissolution of gas at the gas–water interface. We employ a quasi-steady approximation for the phase temperatures and then derive a series solution for the interface positions. A non-standard feature of the model is an integral free boundary condition that arises from mass conservation owing to changes in gas density at the gas–water interface, which makes the problem non-self-adjoint. We derive a two-scale asymptotic series solution for the dissolved gas concentration, which because of the non-self-adjointness gives rise to a Fourier series expansion in eigenfunctions that do not satisfy the usual orthogonality conditions. We consider the nonlinear optimisation of the mixing of a passive scalar, initially arranged in two layers, in a two-dimensional plane Poiseuille flow at finite Reynolds and Péclet numbers, below the linear instability threshold. We use a nonlinear-adjoint-looping approach to identify optimal perturbations leading to maximum time-averaged energy as well as maximum mixing in a freely evolving flow, measured through the minimisation of either the passive scalar variance or the so-called mix-norm, as defined by Mathew, Mezić & Petzold (Physica D, vol. 211, 2005, pp. 23–46). We show that energy optimisation appears to lead to very weak mixing of the scalar field whereas the optimal mixing initial perturbations, despite being less energetic, are able to homogenise the scalar field very effectively. For sufficiently long time horizons, minimising the mix-norm identifies optimal initial perturbations which are very similar to those which minimise scalar variance, demonstrating that minimisation of the mix-norm is an excellent proxy for effective mixing in this finite-Péclet-number bounded flow. By analysing the time evolution from initial perturbations of several optimal mixing solutions, we demonstrate that our optimisation method can identify the dominant underlying mixing mechanism, which appears to be classical Taylor dispersion, i.e. shear-augmented diffusion. The optimal mixing proceeds in three stages. First, the optimal mixing perturbation, energised through transient amplitude growth, transports the scalar field across the channel width. In a second stage, the mean flow shear acts to disperse the scalar distribution leading to enhanced diffusion. In a final third stage, linear relaxation diffusion is observed. We also demonstrate the usefulness of the developed variational framework in a more realistic control case: mixing optimisation by prescribed streamwise velocity boundary conditions. The current study tested the boundary conditions of ethical decision-making by increasing cognitive load. This manipulation is believed to hinder deliberation, and, as we argue, reduces the cognitive capacity needed for a self-serving bias to occur. As telling a lie is believed to be more cognitively taxing than telling the truth, we hypothesized that participants would be more honest under high cognitive load than low cognitive load. 173 participants anonymously rolled a die three times and reported their outcomes - of which one of the rolls would be paid out - while either under high or low cognitive load. For the roll that determined pay, participants under low cognitive load, but not under high cognitive load, reported die rolls that were significantly different from a uniform (honest) distribution. The reported outcome of this roll was also significantly higher in the low load condition than in the high load condition, suggesting that participants in the low load condition lied to get higher pay. This pattern was not observed for the second and third roll where participants knew the rolls were not going to be paid out and where therefore lying would not serve self-interest. Results thus indicate that having limited cognitive capacity will unveil a tendency to be honest in a situation where having more cognitive capacity would have enabled one to serve self-interest by lying. To study the glaciological processes controlling the mass budget of Greenland's peripheral glaciers and ice caps, field measurements were carried out on Qaanaaq ice cap, a 20 km long ice cap in northwestern Greenland. In the summer of 2012, we measured surface melt rate, ice flow velocity and ice thickness along a survey route spanning the ice margin (200ma.s.l.) to the ice-cap summit (1110ma.s.l.). Melt rates in the ablation area were clearly influenced by dark materials covering the ice surface, where degree-day factors varied from 5.44mmw.e. K-1 d-1 on a clean surface to 8.26mmw.e. K-1 d-1 in the dark regions. Ice velocity showed diurnal variations, indicating the presence of surface-meltwater induced basal sliding. Mean ice thickness along the survey route was 120 m, with a maximum thickness of 165 m. Ice velocity and temperature fields were computed using a thermomechanically coupled numerical glacier model. Modelled ice temperature, obtained by imposing estimated annual mean air temperature as the surface boundary condition, was substantially lower than implied by the observed ice velocity. This result suggests that the ice dynamics and thermodynamics of the ice cap are significantly influenced by heat transfer from meltwater and changing ice geometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an experimental study of turbulent thermal convection with smooth and rough surface plates in various combinations. A total of five cells were used in the experiments. Both the global $\mathit{Nu}$ and the $\mathit{Nu}$ for each plate (or the associated boundary layer) are measured. The results reveal that the smooth plates are insensitive to the surface (rough or smooth) and boundary conditions (i.e. nominally constant temperature or constant flux) of the other plate of the same cell. The heat transport properties of the rough plates, on the other hand, depend not only on the nature of the plate at the opposite side of the cell, but also on the boundary condition of that plate. It thus appears that, at the present level of experimental resolution, the smooth plate can influence the rough plate, but cannot be influenced by either the rough or the smooth plates. It is further found that the scaling of $\mathit{Nu}$ with $\mathit{Ra}$ for all of the smooth plates is consistent with the classical $1/ 3$ exponent. But the scaling exponent for the global $\mathit{Nu}$ for the cell with both plates being smooth is definitely less than $1/ 3$ (this result itself is consistent with all previous studies at comparable parameter range). We revisit the American put and call option valuation problems. We derive analytical formulas for the option prices and approximate ordinary differential equations for the optimal exercise boundaries. Numerical simulations yield accurate option prices and comparable computational speeds when benchmarked against the binomial method for calculating option prices. Steady streaming flow from oscillating sessile bubbles at walls is the centrepiece of many microstreaming experiments. A complete asymptotic theory of the flow is developed, requiring only the oscillatory driving frequency and material parameters as input, and properly accounting for bubble and wall boundary conditions. It is shown that mixed-mode streaming of neighbouring bubble oscillation modes is responsible for the robustness of the generic ‘fountain’ vortex pair flow pattern, and that the pattern reverses for high frequencies when wall-induced streaming becomes dominant. We investigate Cartan subalgebras in nontracial amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras ${\mathop{M{}_{1} \ast }\nolimits}_{B} {M}_{2} $ over an amenable von Neumann subalgebra $B$. First, we settle the problem of the absence of Cartan subalgebra in arbitrary free product von Neumann algebras. Namely, we show that any nonamenable free product von Neumann algebra $({M}_{1} , {\varphi }_{1} )\ast ({M}_{2} , {\varphi }_{2} )$ with respect to faithful normal states has no Cartan subalgebra. This generalizes the tracial case that was established by A. Ioana [Cartan subalgebras of amalgamated free product ${\mathrm{II} }_{1} $factors, arXiv:1207.0054]. Next, we prove that any countable nonsingular ergodic equivalence relation $ \mathcal{R} $ defined on a standard measure space and which splits as the free product $ \mathcal{R} = { \mathcal{R} }_{1} \ast { \mathcal{R} }_{2} $ of recurrent subequivalence relations gives rise to a nonamenable factor $\mathrm{L} ( \mathcal{R} )$ with a unique Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. Recent results published by Gugenberger et al. on surface diffusion (Phys. Rev. E, vol. 78, 2008, 016703), show that the sharp-interface limit of the phase field models often adopted in the literature fails to produce the appropriate boundary conditions. With this knowledge, we consider the sharp-interface limit of phase field models for binary fluids, obtained carefully, where hydrodynamic equations are coupled to phase field evolution based on Cahn–Hilliard or Allen–Cahn theories, in a variety of guises, and unify and contrast their forms and behaviours in the sharp-interface limit. In particular, a tensorial mobility model is analysed, which allows the bulk fluids in the outer region to satisfy classical Navier–Stokes type equations to all orders in the Cahn number.
