We establish new local and global estimates for evolutionary partial differential equations in classical Banach and quasi-Banach spaces that appear most frequently in the theory of partial differential equations. More specifically, we obtain optimal (local in time) estimates for the solution to the Cauchy problem for variable-coefficient evolutionary partial differential equations. The estimates are achieved by introducing the notions of Schrödinger and general oscillatory integral operators with inhomogeneous phase functions and prove sharp local and global regularity results for these in Besov–Lipschitz and Triebel–Lizorkin spaces.

It was observed recently in work of Bez, Buschenhenke, Cowling, Flock and the first author, that the euclidean Brascamp–Lieb inequality satisfies a natural and useful Fourier duality property. The purpose of this paper is to establish an appropriate discrete analogue of this. Our main result identifies the Brascamp–Lieb constants on (finitely-generated) discrete abelian groups with Brascamp–Lieb constants on their (Pontryagin) duals. As will become apparent, the natural setting for this duality principle is that of locally compact abelian groups, and this raises basic questions about Brascamp–Lieb constants formulated in this generality. This paper proposes a fairly general new point of view on the question of asymptotic stability of (topological) solitons. Our approach is based on the use of the distorted Fourier transform at the nonlinear level; it does not rely only on Strichartz or virial estimates and is therefore able to treat low-power nonlinearities (hence also nonlocalised solitons) and capture the global (in space and time) behaviour of solutions.

As a result of field fringing, the capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor differs from that predicted by the textbook formula. Using singular perturbations and conformal mapping techniques, we calculate the leading-order correction to the capacitance in the limit of large aspect ratio. We establish new Strichartz estimates for orthonormal families of initial data in the case of the wave, Klein–Gordon and fractional Schrödinger equations. Our estimates extend those of Frank–Sabin in the case of the wave and Klein–Gordon equations, and generalize work of Frank et al. and Frank–Sabin for the Schrödinger equation. Due to a certain technical barrier, except for the classical Schrödinger equation, the Strichartz estimates for orthonormal families of initial data have not previously been established up to the sharp summability exponents in the full range of admissible pairs. We obtain the optimal estimates in various notable cases and improve the previous results.

Let $\mathbb {S}^{d-1}$ denote the unit sphere in Euclidean space $\mathbb {R}^d$, $d\geq 2$, equipped with surface measure $\sigma _{d-1}$. An instance of our main result concerns the regularity of solutions of the convolution equation $$\begin{align*}a\cdot(f\sigma_{d-1})^{\ast {(q-1)}}\big\vert_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}}=f,\text{ a.e. on }\mathbb{S}^{d-1}, \end{align*}$$where $a\in C^\infty (\mathbb {S}^{d-1})$, $q\geq 2(d+1)/(d-1)$ is an integer, and the only a priori assumption is $f\in L^2(\mathbb {S}^{d-1})$. We prove that any such solution belongs to the class $C^\infty (\mathbb {S}^{d-1})$. In particular, we show that all critical points associated with the sharp form of the corresponding adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on $\mathbb {S}^{d-1}$ are $C^\infty $-smooth. This extends previous work of Christ and Shao [4] to arbitrary dimensions and general even exponents and plays a key role in the companion paper [24].

For a complex function $F$ on $\mathbb{C}$ , we study the associated composition operator $T_{F}(f):=F\circ f=F(f)$ on Wiener amalgam $W^{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\;(1\leqslant p. We have shown $T_{F}$ maps $W^{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ to $W^{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ if and only if $F$ is real analytic on $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ and $F(0)=0$. Similar result is proved in the case of modulation spaces $M^{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. In particular, this gives an affirmative answer to the open question proposed in Bhimani and Ratnakumar (J. Funct. We prove certain L2(ℝn) bilinear estimates for Fourier extension operators associated to spheres and hyperboloids under the action of the k-plane transform. As the estimates are L2-based, they follow from bilinear identities: in particular, these are the analogues of a known identity for paraboloids, and may be seen as higher-dimensional versions of the classical L2(ℝ2)-bilinear identity for Fourier extension operators associated to curves in ℝ2. We consider the global behaviour for large solutions of the Dirac–Klein–Gordon system in critical spaces in dimension $1+3$ . In particular, we show that bounded solutions exist globally in time and scatter, provided that a controlling space–time Lebesgue norm is finite. A crucial step is to prove nonlinear estimates that exploit the dichotomy between transversality and null structure, and furthermore involve the controlling norm.
