This article uses the life and writings of Martin Crusius (1526–1607), professor of Latin and Greek at the university of Tübingen, to explore the methods and tools of early modern ethnographers. For decades Crusius recorded contemporary Greek life under Ottoman rule by investigating a broad array of visual, material, textual, and oral evidence and by mustering various scholarly methods. The documentary record that Crusius compiled demonstrates that early modern ethnography was one among many period forms of knowledge making in which tropes and techniques from several fields and disciplines came together fruitfully. This article argues that Pindar refers to cyclic Trojan epics as fixed poems known to his audiences and discusses why this matters for our understanding of his poetry. Section I claims that Isthmian 4 alludes to the Aethiopis as the work of Homer. Section II examines how Nemean 10 closely engages with the Cypria. Section III argues that Nemean 6 and Isthmian 8 signal an intertextual engagement with the Aethiopis and the Cypria. A conclusion assesses how far we can extrapolate from the preceding arguments to generalize about Pindar's relationship to Trojan epic and then suggests one particular way in which recognizing allusions to lost epic can enrich our understanding of his preserved lyric. An unusual ancient Greek lament form, hitherto overlooked by students of the subject, displays the following syntax: parallel sentences with verb in initial position (Vi) expressing the loss, followed by the grammatical subject (S). Sometimes the same verb was used in each of the parallel lines. ViS parallelism is a subliterary syntax reflecting a very old style. A number of Greek authors adopted this syntax to represent or allusively echo the form. Examples, although relatively scarce, are spread through a diverse range of ancient literature spanning at least six centuries, from the second century BC to the fourth century AD, with earlier echoes as far back as Homer. Kubeia and its congeners are often translated as 'playing dice' or 'dicing' because kuboi are 'dice'. But sometimes kubeia has nothing to do with 'dice' (kuboi) at all, and so ought often to be translated simply as 'gambling'. Pollux explains the nature of the word clearly in book 7, and his position is supported by earlier authors such as Theopompus, Diphilus, Isocrates, Xenophon and Aeschines. Not only is it possible to 'gamble' (kubeuein) with knucklebones (astragaloi) as well as cubic dice (kuboi), it is also possible to 'gamble' (kubeuein) by folding leather straps, by spinning coins and by guessing about small objects hidden in the hand; it is even possible to 'gamble' (kubeuein) during a cock-fight. The mistaken belief that the word means 'dicing' has affected not only centuries of translations and interpretations, but also the editing of texts since at least the early 19th century, as is shown regarding a crux in Aeschines' Against Timarchus. The article focuses on archaeological research and excavation efforts launched in Eleia, including Triphylia, Greece from 2009 to 2010. A study of the post-Byzantine and later churches was launched in the historical settlement of Taxiarches. An investigation on the spatial extent, building types and chronological span of the Mycenaean settlement of the so-called acropolis in Kakovatos was conducted in 2009. It provides an update on the continuing excavation in the southeast complete of Olympia.

This article is the first publication of a Greek inscription from Akmoneia in Phrygia, dated to A.D. 6/7. The monument is an honorific stele for a priestess by the name of Tatia, and was voted by a body of ‘Greek and Roman women’. As a document of collective political activity by a female corporate group, the inscription has no real parallels in either the Greek or Roman world. The monument is set in the context of the Roman mercantile presence in central Phrygia in the late Republican and early Imperial periods, and some proposals are offered concerning the identity and significance of the honouring body.
