A low-profile multi-polarized MIMO ultra-wideband antenna suitable for body-centric communications is reported. MIMO configuration is achieved using the symmetric heptagonal monopole (SHM) antenna, a mirrored SHM antenna, an asymmetric ruby-shaped monopole (ARSM) antenna, and a mirrored ARSM antenna placed over the modified C-shaped ground plane (MCGP). The proposed antenna elements are designed to achieve resonance for the entire ultra-wideband frequency range. The SHM antenna is coupled with a co-planar waveguide to produce linear polarization. An ARSM antenna generates circular polarization utilizing an asymmetric geometry both in the radiator and a truncated ground plane. Both the SHM antenna and an ARSM antenna are aligned face-to-face over an MCGP plane and good isolation >15 dB is realized between the antenna elements. The gain and total efficiency for linear polarized and the circularly polarized antennas are 3.05–4.8 dBi/48–66% and from 2.8 to 5 dBic/52 to 70.5%, respectively. This paper presents a pattern diversity UWB antenna for Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) communications. Pattern diversity antenna comprises two antenna elements with directional and omnidirectional patterns suitable for off-body and on-body communications respectively. Several broad-banding techniques such as Co-Planar waveguide, parasitic patches, and cavity resonant techniques are incorporated in microstrip antenna to achieve an ultra-wideband of 7.5 GHz (3.1 to 10.6 GHz) with a directional pattern. Monopole radiator topology is utilized to achieve a UWB frequency range of 2.6–10.6 GHz with an omnidirectional pattern. Pattern diversity is achieved using an orthogonal arrangement of the antenna elements in a compact size of 40 mm × 34 mm, maintaining the isolation >20 dB between the antennas. Gain varies from 2.2 to 4.6 dBi and 2.5 to 7.5 dBi for omnidirectional and directional antenna respectively. The simulated radiation efficiency for the directional antenna and the omnidirectional antenna are 74–86% and 52–66.5% respectively. The proposed design provides a good diversity performance in the entire UWB bandwidth with ECC<0.1 and a diversity gain of approximately 10 dB. This paper proposes a unique, first of its kind fabrication technique for the making of textile antennas. A novel method that provides scope for automation in textile antenna production is presented here. A completely integrated textile antenna fabrication method that eliminates the tasks of positioning and fastening of the various components of a patch antenna is discussed. The technique employs multilayer weaving for the production of a wearable antenna on a cotton substrate. Silver yarn is used for the conductive regions of the textile antenna. Two layers of woven cotton serve to isolate the radiating patch from the ground plane of the antenna. The designed antenna was chosen to operate at the frequency of 2.45 GHz for Wireless Local Area Network. The built prototype resonated at 2.43 GHz with a |S11|of 218.62 dB. This paper presents the design of a compact, planar, single layer, tri-section ultra-wideband (UWB) branch-line (BL) coupler. The prototype offers 10 dB return loss characteristics from 3.1 to 13.7 GHz. Over a major portion of the band, phase imbalance of ±10° is achieved. The method of deploying multi stage impedance feed has been used to achieve improved bandwidth. To enhance the power output through the coupled port throughout the operating band, ring shaped slots have been introduced in the ground plane beneath the series arms. A novel planar printed phase shifter design is proposed in this paper. The design is developed with microstrip–conductor-backed coplanar waveguide– microstrip (MP–CBCPW–MP) transition line with different defected ground structures (DGS). The differential phase shift can be controlled by altering the DGS dimensions. Three prototypes with DGS dimensions 5 × 10, 10 × 20, and 10 × 30 mm2, are employed at the finite ground plane to achieve 5°, 20°, and 30° shift in phase respectively and are validated with the phase delay relation. The prominent effect of the transition region is to confine the field area. The resonance is at 700 MHz with a bandwidth of 400 MHz (0.4–0.8 GHz). The proposed phase shifter can be used for broadcasting applications. An ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency-selective surface (FSS) exhibiting band rejection characteristic is presented in this paper. The proposed unit cell has the size of 14 × 14 mm2 which is approximately 0.18 × 0.18 λo, where λo corresponds to free space wavelength at the lower cut-off frequency. The proposed UWB FSS consists of a single-layer substrate and provides 20 dB attenuation level for a wide bandwidth of 7.53 GHz at the normal incidence. The proposed FSS is polarization independent and also provides angular-independent operation for the EM wave incidences of 15°, 30° and 45° with 11.5 dB attenuation over a wide range from 4 to 14 GHz. This paper presents the design, testing, and analysis of a clover structured monopole antenna for super wideband applications. The proposed antenna has a wide impedance bandwidth (−10 dB bandwidth) from 1.9 GHz to frequency over 30 GHz. The clover shaped antenna with a compact size of 50 mm × 45 mm is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a thickness of 1.6 mm. Parametric study has been performed by varying the parameters of the clover to obtain an optimum wide band characteristics. Furthermore, the prototype introduces a method of achieving super wide bandwidth by deploying fusion of elliptical patch geometries (clover shaped) with a semi elliptical ground plane, loaded with a V-cut at the ground. The proposed antenna has a 14 dB bandwidth from 5.9 to 13.1 GHz, which is suitable for ultra wideband (UWB) outdoor propagation. The prototype is experimentally validated for frequencies within and greater than UWB. Transfer function, impulse response, and group delay has been plotted in order to address the time domain characteristics of the proposed antenna with fidelity factor values. Phase shifters are indispensable microwave components. In this paper, a dual-frequency, passive, analog, and reciprocal phase shifter is proposed, deploying the phase-delay characteristics of complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR). A transmission line is loaded with a pair of CSRR in the ground plane and the phase variations are compared with an ideal transmission line. The proposed phase shifter operates in the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) and wireless local area network (WLAN) bands, providing a phase of 180° at 2.4 GHz and 90° at 5.4 GHz for beam steering applications.
