Traditional methods for modeling growth of free-ranging fish are often limited by missing recapture observations that prevent individual growth estimates for a given time interval. Our purpose is to present a method for modeling growth rates of juvenile steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) that addresses this limitation. Age-1 juvenile steelhead were individually marked with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, released in a Michigan, USA, watershed, and sampled monthly (May–November) with barge electrofishing. Individual growth was modeled using daily water temperature and observed fish sizes as inputs and by determining the proportion of maximum consumption parameter (P) for the bioenergetics equation that provided a minimum residual squared error. Results demonstrate that individual steelhead growth can be accurately modeled using water temperature and a temporally specific P shared by all individuals. Advantages of using this method to model fish growth include the ability to bridge data gaps where observations are lacking in individual length histories, rigorously test for differences in P across time periods, and estimate variability of P among fish within a given stream reach. Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation de la croissance des poissons libres en nature sont souvent restreintes par le manque d’observations de recaptures qui empêche l’estimation des croissances individuelles pendant un certain intervalle de temps. Notre objectif est de présenter une méthode de modélisation des taux de croissance de jeunes truites arc-en-ciel anadromes (Oncorhynchus mykiss) qui résoud ce problème. Nous avons marqué individuellement des jeunes truites arc-en-ciel anadromes d’âge 1 d’une étiquette PIT (transpondeur intégré passif), les avons libérées dans un bassin versant du Michigan, .-U., et les avons échantillonnés chaque mois (mai–novembre) par pêche électrique sur barge. Provides information on a vegetation history for Isle Royale National Park in Michigan using pollen and spores extracted from two lake sediment cores. Influence that substrate might have had on postglacial vegetation development and dynamics; Application of pollen percentage diagrams, nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination and modern analog analysis; Calculation of pollen percentages using all pollen minus aquatics.

A rhyolite in the Hemlock Formation, a mostly bimodal submarine volcanic deposit that is laterally correlative with the Negaunee Iron-formation, yields a sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U–Pb zircon age of 1874 ± 9 Ma, but also contains inherited Archean zircons as old as 3.8 Ga. This precise age determination for the classic Paleoproterozoic stratigraphic sequence of northern Michigan, the Marquette Range Supergroup (MRS), necessitates modification of previous depositional and tectonic models. Our new data indicate that the Menominee Group, previously ascribed to continental rifting during early, pre-collision phases of the Penokean orogenic cycle, is coeval with arc-related volcanic rocks now preserved as accreted terranes immediately to the south and is more aptly interpreted as a foredeep deposit. We interpret these to be second-order basins created by oblique subduction of the continental margin rather than basins formed on a rifting margin. Along with a recently reported age for the Gunflint Formation in Ontario of 1878 ± 2 Ma, our data suggest that an extensive foredeep in the western Lake Superior region was the locus of iron-formation deposition during arc accretion from the south. Further, we interpret the lower MRS (Chocolay Group), a glaciogenic and shallow-marine succession that lies atop Archean basement, to be equivalent to the upper part of the Huronian Supergroup of Ontario and to represent the original continental rifting and passive-margin phase of the Penokean cycle. The upper MRS (Baraga Group) represents deeper marine basins, dominated by turbidites and lesser volcanic rocks, resulting from increased subsidence and continued collision. A stitching pluton, which cuts correlatives of the Hemlock Formation in a thrust sheet, yielded a U–Pb zircon age of 1833 ± 6 Ma, consistent with other post-tectonic plutons in Wisconsin and northern Michigan, indicating that Penokean convergence lasted no longer than ~40 million years.Une rhyolite de la Formation de Hemlock, un dépôt volcanique sous-marin surtout bimodal qui est latéralement corrélé avec la Formation de fer de Nagaunee, a donné un âge SHRIMP [sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe] U–Pb (zircon) de 1874 ± 9 Ma, mais elle contient des zircons hérités de l'Archéen qui atteignent 3,8 Ga. Bulk chemical data indicate the Fern Creek Formation (Early Proterozoic, Marquette Range Supergroup, Lower Chocolay Group) originated as a glacial till, resolving an old argument about the correct interpretation for diamictite-containing units within the formation. There are poor correlations among SiO[sub 2,] Al[sub 2] O[sub 3,] and K[sub 2] O, and the chemical index of alteration averages 55. These are qualities characteristic of tills and other sediments accumulated in the absence of chemical weathering and transport-induced sorting and inconsistent with an origin as a fluvial deposit (the principal alternate hypothesis). The Archean Carney Lake Gneiss might be the source for at least the lower portions of the Fern Creek Formation. Compositions are similar, and rare earth element trends in the Fern Creek Formation are consistent with derivation from an Archean high-grade terrane. Pegmatites in the gneiss could be the source for monazite, huttonite, and an unnamed fluor-hydroxy-rare earth mineral that occurs in the midsection of the Fern Creek Formation. In addition, mineral and bulk chemical trends are consistent with models involving deep erosion of a complex Archean source, similar to models previously developed for Gowganda tills in the Huronian Supergroup. Samples of the Sturgeon River Quartzite occurring above the Fern Creek Formation were also analyzed.
