The boreal forest is subject to various anthropogenic disturbances, including logging, mining, and hydroelectricity production and transport. These disturbances affect Indigenous communities and the culturally salient species they depend on for the practice of traditional and subsistence activities. Rhododendron groenlandicum (Oeder) Kron & Judd is one such species whose leaves are used to treat various ailments, due to their concentration in biologically active chemicals such as flavonoids. Our objective was to assess the effect of anthropogenic disturbances on the chemical properties of R. groenlandicum on the territories of three Indigenous communities. Leaf samples were collected near mines, under hydroelectric power lines, and in non-disturbed sites. Our results showed that variations in flavonoid concentration were mainly related to territory ( R2 = 0.43, P = 0.0005), while disturbance type had a smaller effect ( R2 = 0.18, P = 0.02). Samples from Nemaska, the northernmost territory with the most open forest stands, had higher concentrations of epicatechin (+23%, P = 0.03). Quercetin-3-glucoside concentrations were lower near mines (−19%, P = 0.01). The effects of disturbances on the chemical signature of R. groenlandicum are complex, and a complete assessment of the consequences of industrial activity on Indigenous landscape value must take into account other culturally salient species.

Climate change and natural resource extraction are transforming boreal forest landscapes, with effects on Indigenous people’s relationship with the land. Collaborative management could enhance the consideration of Indigenous perspectives and limit negative outcomes of environmental change, but it remains the exception rather than the norm. We addressed barriers to involvement of Indigenous people in land management by developing a method to enhance communication and trust, while favouring bottom-up decision-making. We partnered with the Abitibiwinni and Ouje-Bougoumou First Nations (boreal Quebec, Canada) (i) to develop indicators of Indigenous landscape state, (ii) to create a typology of Indigenous hunting grounds, and (iii) to suggest guidelines for sustainable land management in Indigenous contexts. Through participatory mapping and semidirected interviews with 23 local experts, we identified factors influencing Indigenous landscape value. Using open-access data, we developed indicators to measure landscape state according to those values. We identified four types of hunting grounds with k-means clustering, based upon biophysical factors and disturbance history. Our results suggest that land management should aim to reduce differences between hunting ground states and consider the risk of rapid shifts from one state to another.

The skilled labour shortage in the natural resource sector is a major issue in North America, particularly in the Canadian forestry sector. In the province of Quebec alone, 15 000 positions will need to be filled by 2022. At the same time, many Indigenous communities are seeking to develop employment opportunities, as they have high unemployment rates and a young and growing population. But are forestry employers creating an environment conducive to the recruitment, integration, and retention of an Indigenous workforce? We interviewed 22 directors and human resource managers from 19 forestry businesses (16 non-Indigenous and 3 Indigenous) in Quebec, with a view to answering this question. Employer narratives suggest that they have only just begun to see the potential of the Indigenous workforce and put in place diversity management practices. Partnerships between Indigenous communities and forestry businesses, development of alternative training and skill development methods, and awareness-raising among employees and employers were found to favour recruitment, integration, and retention of Indigenous workers. Conversely, according to participants, stereotypes, discrimination, lack of inclusion measures, drug and alcohol use, and lack of training reduce the potential for Indigenous people to join the forestry workforce.

Au Cameroun, les pratiques locales forestières sont parfois en contradiction avec les exigences légales de commercialisation du bois des forêts communautaires (FC). La présente étude visait à évaluer les pratiques locales en fonction des exigences de la grille de légalité N°6 de l’APV FLEGT (Accord de partenariat volontaire ‒ Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade). Des groupes de discussion, des entretiens individuels et des observations terrain ont permis de montrer que les pratiques locales forestières dans les FC pourraient être compatibles avec les exigences de la grille. Toutefois, certaines pratiques contribuent à compromettre la mise en œuvre de l’APV FLEGT dans les FC. Une des options pour réduire les écarts entre les pratiques locales et les vérificateurs de la grille de légalité consisterait à modifier la grille pour mieux distinguer les responsabilités des communautés, des sous-traitants et de l’administration des forêts. Cela permettrait d’amender la loi forestière pour éviter de surcharger les communautés. Une autre option serait de mettre en place une stratégie de commercialisation du bois légal des FC. Les résultats de cette étude pourraient trouver des applications dans les autres pays qui ont mis en œuvre ou qui négocient des APV FLEGT en Afrique, en Asie, en Amérique centrale et en Amérique du Sud.

Selection cutting is used in northern temperate forests where regeneration dynamics are driven by gap formation. By creating openings in the canopy, selection cutting modifies shrub cover, an important criterion in winter habitat selection by snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus Erxleben, 1777), a key species in North American forests. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of selection cuts on snowshoe hare habitat and to evaluate the restoration of habitat quality over time. Occurrence indices for snowshoe hare (fecal pellets and tracks) were modelled according to habitat quality parameters for 22 hardwood stands that were subjected to selection cutting between 1993 and 2007 and 30 untreated stands (15 hardwood and 15 mixedwood) in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec. Model selection based on the Akaike second-order information criterion (AICc) identified lateral cover as the only habitat structure parameter having a positive effect on snowshoe hare abundance in the study sites. Indicators of snowshoe hare presence were highest in untreated mixedwood stands but more abundant in selection cuts than in untreated hardwood stands. The use of selection cuts by snowshoe hare increased with time since logging was performed. We conclude that selection cutting exerted a positive effect on the use of hardwood stands by snowshoe hare.

New high-resolution chemostratigraphy, in combination with updated biostratigraphy, refines the chronostratigraphic resolution of the nearly 2 km thick Ordovician section below Anticosti Island. A total of 1414 horizons, spaced at 1.0–1.5 m intervals, were sampled from the New Associated Consolidated Paper (NACP) drill core and analyzed for major and trace elemental composition by portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer (pXRF). Select micrite and calcareous shale powders were then analyzed for δ13Ccarb (number of samples, N = 364) and 87Sr/86Sr (N = 25). Our results indicate a Floian to early Darriwilian (F3–Dw1) age for the Romaine Formation, a middle Darriwilian to Sandbian (Dw2–Sa1) age for the Mingan Formation, a lower to mid-Katian (Ka1–Ka2) age for the Macasty Formation, an upper Katian (Ka3) age for the lower Vauréal Formation, an uppermost Katian (Ka4) age for the upper Vauréal, and a Hirnantian (H1) age for the Ellis Bay Formation. This integrated chemostratigraphic and biostratigraphic synthesis establishes the position of numerous unconformities, the duration of the intervening depositional sequences, and rates of sedimentation.

To evaluate environmental controls of yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) distribution at its northern distribution limit in eastern Canada, we analyzed abundance, age structure, biomass accumulation rate, and growth sensitivity to climate of this species at 14 sites along a 200 km latitudinal gradient spanning three bioclimatic domains and reaching frontier populations of this species in western Quebec. We observed a large variability in seedling density across domains and presence of sites with abundant yellow birch regeneration within all three bioclimatic domains. Seedling density was positively correlated to mean age and abundance of yellow birch trees in the canopy, while sapling density was positively associated with dryer habitats. Growth patterns of canopy trees showed no effect of declining temperatures along the south–north gradient. Environmental controls of birch distribution at its northern limit were realized through factors affecting birch regeneration and not growth of canopy trees. At the stand scale, regeneration density was strongly controlled by local site conditions and not by differences in climate among sites. At the regional scale, climate variability could be an indirect driver of yellow birch distribution, affecting disturbance rates and, subsequently, availability of suitable sites for regeneration.

The present study investigates the electrocoagulation treatment of two different wastewaters, namely sawmill wastewater and ship waste effluent, charged with organic matter. Monopolar electrode configuration was studied for both types of effluents at current intensity of 2.0 A for a total treatment time of 90 min. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (CODs) removal was very low (12.5% to 13.6%) for sawmill effluent in comparison to 74.7% to 75.4% obtained for ship effluents. Thus, ship effluent was further examined in details for its treatment efficacy in terms of electrode configuration and type, current intensity, treatment time, and pH. It was observed that bipolar electrode configuration using the Al electrode at 0.3 A gave the highest CODsremoval of 77%. Effluent pH increased rapidly in the initial 20 min with a concomitant decrease in CODsconcentration. Electrocoagulated-flocculated ship effluent improved performance relative to simple flocculation with respective removals of 86% of turbidity, 56% of CODs; 69% of total COD (CODt), 90% of oil and grease, 94% of C10-C50hydrocarbons and 89% of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). Residual Al3+concentration in the solution followed a linear trend with treatment time. Meanwhile, the sludge production increased progressively during 60 min of treatment time. Total cost for treatment of ship effluent, including energy, electrodes, and sludge disposal fee is estimated between CAN$1.34 and CAN$2.40m–3.

Growth responses of riparian eastern white cedar trees ( Thuja occidentalis L.) to the double damming of a large lake in the southeastern Canadian boreal forest was analyzed to determine whether the shoreline tree limit is the result of physiological flood stress or mechanical disturbances. The first damming, in 1915, caused a rise in water level of ca. 1.2 m and resulted in the death of the trees that formed the ancient shoreline forest, as well as the wounding and tilting of the surviving trees (by wave action and ice push) that constitute the present forest margin. The second damming, in 1922, did not further affect the water level, but did retard the occurrence of spring high water levels, as well as reduce their magnitude. However, this did not injure or affect the mortality of riparian eastern white cedars. Radial growth was not affected by flooding stress, probably because inundation occurred prior to the start of the growing season (1915–1921) or was of too short duration to adversely affect tree metabolism (after 1921). It follows that (i) the shoreline limit of eastern white cedar is a mechanical rather than a physiological limit, and (ii) disturbance-related growth responses (e.g., ice scars, partial cambium dieback, and compression wood) are better parameters than ring width for the reconstruction of long-term water level increases of natural, unregulated lakes.

In the Quebec Appalachians, disruption, imbrication, and thrusting of the Taconian foreland basin sequence are responsible for the development of chaotic units within the turbiditic sequence of the Caradocian Sainte-Rosalie Group, the main lithologic assemblage of the parautochthonous zone. These chaotic units have been termed olistostromes or tectonosomes on the basis of field criteria and following Pini's (1999) classification. Olistostromal units containing blocks of the middle mudstone (Utica Shale) and upper turbidite units (Ste-Rosalie Group) of the foreland basin and spanning the Caradocian N. gracilis, C. americanus, O. ruedemanni, and C. spiniferus graptolite zones were deposited and incorporated into the Sainte-Rosalie Group. Disruption of more competent beds of the flyschic sequence and fault stacking and slicing of older rock units occurred along major thrust faults and now form structurally aligned corridors or tectonosomes. Graptolites and new chitinozoan data from both olistostromes and tectonosomes indicate older ages (early Late Ordovician) than the flysch units of Sainte-Rosalie Group (mid Late Ordovocian). Lithological, stratigraphic, and structural criteria indicate that tectonosome slices are imbricated foreland basin rocks that are correlative to the Black River, Trenton, Utica, Sainte-Rosalie, and Lorraine groups of the Laurentian platform. Thermal maturation data indicates that disruption of the autochthonous sequence, and folding and thrusting of the entire foreland basin sequence, must have occurred shortly after their deposition. Contrary to what had been suggested, blocks in the olistostromes and tectonosomes were not derived from the allochthonous Chaudière thrust sheet, even though it presently marks the southern contact with the parautochthonous zone. Imbrication of the foreland basin sequence must have occurred before emplacement of the Chaudière thrust sheet.

The post-Taconian units in the Quebec and northern New Brunswick Appalachians constitute the Gaspé Belt and geological studies have mostly focussed on its eastern Quebec segment. Biostratigraphic data indicate that the succession in southern Quebec is no older than Late Silurian and extends into the Early Devonian. Two distinct stratigraphic assemblages are present. The first assemblage (Saint-Luc, Cranbourne, and Lac Aylmer formations, and Glenbrooke Group) unconformably overlies the Humber and Dunnage zones. The units show a basal alluvial conglomerate that passes progressively to deeper marine facies upsection, which have recorded a post-Late Silurian transgressive event. The second assemblage (Saint-Francis Group and Frontenac Formation) is faulted against either Dunnage units or autochthonous post-Taconian units. It locally unconformably overlies units of the Dunnage Zone; the succession shows progressively deeper marine conditions upsection and also has recorded a post-Late Silurian transgressive event. The biostratigraphic framework suggests that some of the units that were assumed to be vertically stacked are rather laterally equivalent. Independant evidence supports the hypothesis that the Gaspé Belt in southern Quebec formed after the collapse of the Taconian orogen in Late Silurian time. This event is ascribed to the Salinian Orogeny. The framework from southern Quebec is incorporated in a regional scenario. The Gaspé Belt experienced a Pridolian–Lochkovian sea-level rise. In Pragian time, shallower marine conditions were established in southern Quebec, whereas in the Gaspé Peninsula, the shallower conditions only occurred in early Emsian time.

The Gaspé Belt in the Restigouche area comprises three successions separated by a Late Silurian (Salinic) disconformity and an Early Devonian angular unconformity. The lower, Upper Ordovician to Lower Silurian sequence consists of siliciclastic turbidites of the Boland Brook and Whites Brook formations (Grog Brook Group), overlain by calcareous turbidites of the Pabos and White Head formations (Matapédia Group), and slope and shelf deposits of the Upsalquitch and Limestone Point formations (lower Chaleurs Group). Above the Salinic disconformity, the upper Chaleurs Group and the Dalhousie Group record a transgressive–regressive cycle. The former comprises Pridolian carbonate rocks of the West Point Formation and overlying Pridolian to Lochkovian sedimentary rocks of the Indian Point Formation. The Chaleurs Group is conformably overlain by Lochkovian to early Emsian subaerial volcanic rocks of the Dalhousie Group (Val d'Amour Formation), which is unconformably overlain by alluvial–lacustrine deposits of the late Emsian Campbellton Formation. Acadian orogenesis began during the Emsian and is characterized by open to closed folding, heterogenous cleavage development, and reverse and strike-slip faults. The Salinic orogeny is manifested in extensional block faulting, within-plate volcanism, and uplift and deep erosion of Early Silurian strata. Early Devonian high-level intrusion of the Matapédia Group, White Head clasts in Indian Point conglomerate, and thermal maturation data all indicate an extended period of Late Silurian – Early Devonian uplift in parts of the Restigouche area. Thermal maturities of West Point and Indian Point strata are within the oil and condensate windows and suggest potential for hydrocarbons in the study area.

Chitinozoan studies recently carried out in the “Appalachian Forelands and St. Lawrence Platform” National Geoscience Mapping Program (NATMAP) project have confirmed the regional biostratigraphic value of a number of chitinozoan species and led to a better documentation of their stratigraphic and geographic distribution in eastern Canada. The typical Darriwilian microfaunas first described from the Table Head Group of western Newfoundland and containing Conochitina chydaea are now recognised in the Rivière Ouelle Formation at Les Méchins, Gaspé Peninsula. In the Upper Ordovician successions of the St. Lawrence Platform at Neuville and in the Charlevoix area, Quebec, Conochitina primitiva is indicative of the multidens–pre-americanus graptolite zonal range, Hercochitina duplicitas of the americanus Zone, and Hercochitina spinetum and Acanthochitina cancellata characterize the ruedemanni – lower spiniferus zonal interval. The occurrence of Cyathochitina vaurealensis and Hercochitina crickmayi in turbidite deposits of the Grog Brook Group of northwestern New Brunswick confirms the minimal facies dependence of these two Richmondian index species. Eisenackitina dolioliformis, characteristic of the late Aeronian and Telychian successions of Arctic Canada, Gaspé Peninsula, and Anticosti Island, is now recognised in samples from the Upsalquitch Formation of northwestern New Brunswick and the Cabano Formation of the Rimouski area in Quebec. The palynological data from Devonian successions of the Matapedia Valley, the Rimouski area, and the Beauce – Eastern Townships region show that the succession of Lower Devonian chitinozoan assemblages of the Forillon Peninsula based on short-ranging species can be used in establishing regional correlations in the Gaspé Belt.

Mean annual seed production is assumed to be proportional to basal area for canopy trees, but it is not known if subcanopy trees produce fewer seeds than expected (given their size) because of low light availability. Ovulate cone production was examined for balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) in 1998 and for balsam fir in 2000 in western Quebec using subcanopy stems, near or far from forest edges, or (at one site) planted white spruce trees in fully open conditions. A very simple light model for transmission through mature trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) crowns and through boles near forest edges was developed to account for the effect of light receipt on cone production. The enhanced light near forest edges (e.g., recent clearcuts) leads to about a doubling of cone production for subcanopy stems. The minimum subcanopy height for cone production far from an edge is about 10 m for balsam fir and 14 m for white spruce, with these minima decreasing near edges. By contrast, the minimum height for white spruce in a plantation (full light) is about 3 m. Mélanges are common in the Humber and Dunnage zones of the Quebec Appalachians. Humber Zone mélanges are spatially associated with Taconian nappes and believed to be of tectonic origin. Dunnage Zone mélanges are interpreted as relicts of an Ordovician accretionary prism. The Ruisseau Isabelle Mélange (RIM) in the Gaspé Appalachians was first interpreted as a Dunnage Zone mélange, because of its tectonic position along the Baie Verte – Brompton Line and lithological components, such as dark mudstone, blocks of ultramafic rocks, and greenish chromite-bearing sandstone. The RIM comprises sedimentary rock assemblages (Composite Shale, Black Shale, and Chromite-Bearing Sandstone assemblages), an Exotic Block, a Pebbly Mudstone Assemblage and slivers of Serpentinized Peridotite, and Metamorphic Tectonite. Most mélanges of the Dunnage Zone in the Quebec Appalachians contain partly similar rocks, but their age is not well constrained. Recent work on the RIM and Cap-Chat Mélange of the Humber Zone and new fossil finds in the RIM rock assemblages allow us to conclude that previous distinction between mélanges of the Dunnage and Humber zones on the basis of rock-type associations is not valid. According to the age of the RIM rock assemblages, mélanges in the northern Gaspé Appalachians continued forming after the mid-Caradocian, later than the Dunnage Zone mélanges of southern Gaspé Appalachians. The juxtaposition and structural features of the RIM rock assemblages result from repeated faulting along the Shickshock Sud fault from Late Ordovician to Middle Devonian.

Experiments were conducted to compare the impact of febrile versus nonfebrile lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced bacterial infection at the time of global hemispheric hypoxic ischemia (GHHI) on the neural damage evoked by the GHHI insult. In the first study acute intraperitoneal (i.p.) sterile saline (SS) or LPS Escherichia coli (60 µg/kg) was given to groups of male, conscious Long Evans rats, and core (colonic, Tc) temperatures were monitored over 6 h postinjection. Peak febrile response occurred ~5 h after the LPS E. coli was injected. Upon sacrifice 7 days later, no hemispheric or regional brain damage occurred in the saline or LPS-injected groups of this first study. In the second study, GHHI was applied (ligation of right common carotid artery + 35 min of 12% O2) in groups of anesthetized, male Long Evans rats previously given an acute i.p. injection of sterile saline or 60 µg/kg LPS E. coli 5 h earlier. Temperatures (Tc) were monitored before, during, and 1.5 and 24 h following GHHI. The LPS-injected group was subdivided into a febrile (Tc > 38°C before and (or) after GHHI) and nonfebrile (Tc < 38°C before and after GHHI) subgroups. A significant correlation was found between the peak temperature rise from preinjection control values following drug administration of either saline or LPS E. coli and the resultant hemispheric damage caused by GHHI. Moreover, upon sacrifice 7 days later ipsilateral hemispheric and regional (i.e., hippocampal, thalamic) damage to GHHI of the febrile LPS E. coli group was significantly increased from respective hemispheric, hippocampal, and thalamic damage of the saline and nonfebrile, LPS groups given the same ischemic insult. Results suggest that the heightened Tc of a LPS infection at the time of global ischemia exacerbated the neural damage of GHHI, a finding similar to that reported with heightened core temperatures induced by external heating.Key words: febrile infection, stroke, temperature, neural damage.

Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) breed both on land and on the ice. In January 1991, 36 h of underwater recordings were made from Amet Island, located in ice-covered waters in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. All vocalizations were examined for spectral and temporal structure and then classified into 1 of 7 call types. The majority of calls consisted of guttural "rups" and "rupes" (frequency = 100–3000 Hz), and low-frequency growls (100–500 Hz). Other less common vocalizations were low-frequency clicks (3000 Hz), as well as loud knocks, similar to knocking vocalizations recorded in walrus, and which had not been described previously for grey seals. The total number of vocalizations and the number of specific call types showed seasonal variations. The rate of vocalizations increased with the intensity of social activity and with the number of agonistic behaviors during the progression of the breeding season. Comparisons between night and day showed some changes in the vocal repertoire. Low-frequency clicks were recorded more often during darkness (17.1% of calls) than in daylight (1.9%), and when ice cover was more extensive.

By assaying lysozyme activity after denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of commercial hen egg white lysozyme preparations, minor lysozymal activity was detected as an 18-kDa protein. After electrophoretic purification for microsequencing, the N-terminus sequence of the 18-kDa lysozyme was found to be identical with mature 14.4-kDa hen egg white lysozyme. The 18-kDa hen egg white lysozyme was judged to be glycosylated based on a 3.6-kDa decrease in molecular mass after N-glycosidase F treatment, binding to concanavalin A – Sepharose, and staining with periodate – Schiff's reagent. The minor form corresponded to about 0.3% of lyzozyme molecules.Key words: lysozyme, glycosylation, sequential PAGE, N-terminus microsequencing.
