Spanning 2500 km along the western margin of North America are 780 Ma dykes, sills, and minor volcanic packages of the Gunbarrel Large Igneous Province. This study focuses on southern (northwestern United States) and central (northern British Columbia) Gunbarrel intrusions and metavolcanics rocks of the Irene and Huckleberry formation (Washington State). Southern Gunbarrel U–Pb ages range from 780 to 769 Ma and new U–Pb zircon dates for the Turah and Rogers Pass sills are 778.6 ± 0.7 and 778.7 ± 0.9 Ma, respectively. Southern Gunbarrel intrusions are medium- to coarse-grained diabases that are moderately evolved basaltic, continental tholeiites. Intrusions display negative Nb–Ta and positive Pb anomalies in normalized multielement plots, and εNd780 values vary from +3.6 to +1.5. The Irene and Huckleberry volcanic rocks are E-MORB in composition with higher εNd780 (+5 to +6) and likely represent partial melts of a mantle plume responsible for the Gunbarrel event. Assuming an Irene and Huckleberry parental magma, mixing models indicate that the southern Gunbarrel magmas were crustally contaminated, but local host rocks are not appropriate crustal contaminants. The modeling points to average upper crust as the crustal contaminant, with an εNd780 of approximately –2. This crustal contaminant likely resides on the craton impinged upon by the mantle plume. The remarkable geochemical homogeneity of Gunbarrel intrusions from the Yukon to Wyoming is best explained if primary, plume-derived E-MORB magmas were contaminated in large magma reservoirs near the plume centre and were then injected laterally into the crust 100s to 1000s of kilometres from the reservoir.

The largely buried basement of the northern Great Plains includes suture zones and terrane boundaries that represent a significant part of the growth of Laurentia in the Proterozoic. Basement exposures in this region east of the Black Hills are rare. In southeastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota, northeastern Nebraska, and northwestern Iowa, small outcrops of the Proterozoic Sioux Quartzite occur. In southeastern South Dakota, Corson diabase sills or dykes have intruded the quartzite. U–Pb ID–TIMS baddeleyite data from a Corson diabase sample yield an upper intercept date of 1149.4 ± 7.3 Ma, suggesting the diabase is related temporally to the Midcontinent Rift (MCR). The similarity in age of this diabase to the Inspiration sill, Pigeon River, Kipling, and Abitibi dykes suggests that early Midcontinent Rift development was not localized within the Nipigon Embayment, but extended along a roughly east–northeast zone from the Abitibi dykes to the Corson diabase. The presence of the Corson intrusions 250 km west of the MCR is hypothesized to represent a failed rift arm within the Superior craton. The greater strength of the Superior craton relative to lithosphere south of the Spirit Lake tectonic zone resulted in a shift of the southwestern rift arm in southern Minnesota along the Belle Plaine fault southeastward to the Iowa border. Alternatively, the apparent northeast trend of known occurrences of the Corson diabase is also consistent with a mantle plume centre explanation for early Midcontinent rifting.

U–Pb dating of detrital zircons, magmatic zircons, and metamorphic zircon overgrowths and titanites from the Priest River complex, USA, reveal the ages of high-grade metasedimentary rocks, intrusive ages of associated igneous rocks, and the timing of Precambrian metamorphic events. Sensitive high-mass resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U–Pb dates of detrital zircons from the Hauser Lake gneiss and Gold Cup Quartzite are predominately Paleoproterozoic with some Archean grains. The Hauser Lake gneiss contains detrital zircons with nearly concordant ages as young as 1511 Ma. Isotope dilution – thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID–TIMS) and chemical abrasion – thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA–TIMS) dating of magmatic zircon from amphibolites in the Hauser Lake Gneiss yield 1470–1430 Ma crystallization ages based on discordant data, with Cretaceous lower intercepts. The U–Pb zircon systematics are very complex and reflect multiple periods of magmatic and metamorphic growth. A combination of mechanical abrasion, chemical abrasion (CA–TIMS), and SHRIMP methods were required to identify the major geochronological components. These data, in addition to one Nd model age, strengthen correlations between the Hauser Lake Gneiss and the lower Belt–Purcell Supergroup and the Gold Cup Quartzite with the Neihart Quartzite, which underlies the Belt–Purcell Supergroup. Four SHRIMP-dated metamorphic zircon overgrowths give concordant Grenville dates with a weighted average of 1127 ± 110 Ma. This Grenville-aged metamorphic event is recorded by many isotopic systems in the Belt–Purcell basin and reflects a static thermal event, possibly driven by magmatism at depth.

The 2.95–2.82 Ga quartzofeldspathic gneisses and granitoids in the Bighorn, western Owl Creek, and northeastern Wind River uplifts in the central Wyoming Province include low-K tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) and high-K granodiorite–granite (GG) rocks. Both types of granitoids were intruded contemporaneously, although TTGs are more abundant in the older gneisses. The TTG suite consists of calcic to marginally calc-alkalic rocks that straddle the boundaries between metaluminous and peraluminous and between ferroan and magnesian compositions. Rare-earth element (REE) patterns of these rocks may be highly fractionated with low heavy rare-earth element (HREE) contents and modest to absent Eu anomalies but may also be less strongly HREE depleted. These rocks do not represent first-generation continental crust: most have unradiogenic Nd and radiogenic 207Pb/204Pb isotopic compositions that require the incorporation of isotopically evolved sources. The GG suite has compositions that are transitional between Archean TTG and modern, continental margin calc-alkalic rocks. The GG suite is characterized by higher alkali contents relative to CaO than the TTG suite and higher K/Na ratios but exhibits a similar range in REE patterns. The Nd, Sr, and Pb isotopic compositions of the GG suite are slightly less variable but lie within the range of those of the TTG suite. We interpret them as having a source similar to that of the TTG, perhaps forming by partial melting of preexisting TTG. The shift from TTG-dominated to GG-dominated continental crust was a gradual transition that took place over several hundred million years. Clearly subduction-related calc-alkalic magmatism is not recognized in the Wyoming Province prior to 2.67 Ga.

The eastern Ferris Mountains and Bear Mountain area of south-central Wyoming contain a complex assemblage of Archean and Proterozoic rock units, including a metasedimentary and metavolcanic supracrustal sequence named the Spanish Mine metamorphic suite, three granitic plutons (Turkey Creek, Ferris Mountains, Bear Mountain), and at least three sets of mafic dikes. The Spanish Mine metamorphic suite was deposited, intruded by mafic sills and (or) dikes, and underwent amphibolite-grade metamorphism and folding just prior to, or synkinematic with, the intrusion of the Turkey Creek metaplutonic suite, U–Pb dated at 2733.5 ± 2 Ma. A second set of mafic dikes intruded the Turkey Creek metaplutonic suite prior to mylonitic shearing and late-stage folding along the Miners Canyon shear zone. These events were followed by intrusion of the Ferris Mountains plutonic suite at ~2717 Ma. The emplacement of the yet undated granite of Bear Mountain records the last phase of Neoarchean magmatism. The timing of magmatism and deformation support a model that the Ferris Mountains basement rocks formed in an arc terrane distinct from the older Wyoming craton and were accreted to the province in the Neoarchean. Intrusion of a third mafic dike set is dated at 2113 ± 15 Ma and may date the silicified, epidote-rich zones that crosscut all of the Archean rock units. Lead isotopic compositions of galena within the Spanish Mine metamorphic suite indicate additional Proterozoic activity and mineralization.

The Sacawee block is a narrow belt of Paleo- to Mesoarchean crust that extends for ~70 km across the northern Granite Mountains. It is composed of the ~3.3 Ga Sacawee orthogneiss, additional calc-alkalic and tonalitic orthogneisses, and the ~2.86 Ga Barlow Gap Group. The Sacawee block basement is characterized by negative εNdvalues and Paleoarchean Nd crustal residence model ages. A broad east–west-trending zone of Neoarchean high strain, which is part of the Oregon Trail structural belt, transects the Sacawee block and was studied at two locations, the Beulah Belle Lake area and West Sage Hen Rocks. U–Pb analyses of magmatic zircon from a sheared amphibolite within the high-strain zone of the Beulah Belle Lake area constrain the age of the Neoarchean deformation to be later than 2688 ± 5 Ma. At West Sage Hen Rocks, metamorphic zircons in a sheared amphibolite provide a direct date on the shear zone of 2649 ± 2.8 Ma. These data, combined with similar ages of deformation from two other shear zones, are interpreted to suggest that the Neoarchean Oregon Trail structural belt is a pervasive feature of the Sacawee block and may represent a deformation front related to accretion. Multiple east–west-trending shear zones within the Sacawee block are evidence for tectonic modification of the crust between ~2.65 and 2.63 Ga and horizontal convergence analogous to modern plate tectonics processes. The Sacawee block is either a rare exposure of ancient basement typical of that which originally underlay much of the Wyoming Province or it is an exotic block that was accreted to the core of the Wyoming Province in Neoarchean time.

The Archean rocks in western Wyoming, including the Teton Range, the northern Wind River Range, and the western Owl Creek Mountains, preserve a record of a 2.68–2.67 Ga orogenic belt that has many of the hallmarks of modern plate tectonics. A 2683 Ma tholeiitic dike swarm is undeformed and unmetamorphosed in the western Owl Creek Mountains. In the Wind River Range, these dikes have been deformed and metamorphosed during thrusting along the west- to southwest-directed Mount Helen structural belt, which was active at the time that the 2.67 Ga Bridger batholith was emplaced. In the northern Teton Range, the Moose Basin gneiss, which contains relict granulite-facies assemblages, appears to have been thrust upon the amphibolite-grade layered gneiss. The syntectonic Webb Canyon orthogneiss was intruded into the thrust at or before 2673 Ma. We interpret these relations, along with isotopic data indicating that the layered gneiss in the Teton Range consists of juvenile components, to indicate that the western Wyoming Province was the site of active margin tectonics at 2.68–2.67 Ga. This involved a magmatic arc in the present Wind River Range and back-arc spreading in the Owl Creek Mountains. The immature, juvenile layered gneiss in the Teton Range probably represents an accretionary prism or fore-arc basin onto which high-pressure rocks containing a mature sedimentary sequence were thrust at 2.67 Ga. Although it may be questioned as to when modern-style plate tectonics began in other cratons, it was certainly operating in the Wyoming Province by 2.67 Ga.

Neoarchean supracrustal sequences in the south-central Wyoming Province are exposed as relatively small belts in Laramide uplifts. Some sequences are composed of materials derived mainly from pre-existing Wyoming province crust, but others are dominated by juvenile components. The latter include the Miners Delight Formation in the Wind River Range, the Rattlesnake Hills Group in the Granite Mountains, and the Bradley Peak succession in the Seminoe Mountains. U–Pb zircon dates from interbedded metavolcanic rocks suggest that these supracrustal belts are of at least two different ages: ca. 2.67 and ca. 2.72 Ga. We identify a time of contractional deformation and accretion of some of these supracrustal packages to the southern Wyoming Province at ~2.65–2.63 Ga. Magmatism is nearly synchronous with deformation. Some granitoids intrude the Wyoming Province basement, as well as the juvenile rocks thrust onto this basement; these have Nd isotopic compositions indicating that these plutons assimilated some old continental basement during ascent. Plutons intruding the supracrustal rocks located farther from the margin do not show this continental influence. The time scale and geologic processes of deposition, contractional deformation, and plutonism appear analogous to Phanerozoic examples of oceanic terrane accretion, such as formed the Klamath Mountains Province of California and Oregon. We conclude that a major episode of Neoarchean crustal growth involved both the lateral accretion of juvenile terranes and the intrusion of arc magmas formed from mantle-derived and (or) juvenile crustal sources and was driven by geologic processes very similar to modern plate tectonics.

Local preservation of 3.6–3.0 Ga gneisses and widespread isotopic evidence for crust of this age incorporated into younger plutons indicates that the Wyoming Province was a [Formula: see text] 100 000 km2 middle Archean craton, which was modified by late Archean magmatism and tectonism and Proterozoic extension and rifting. On the basis of differences in late Archean histories, the Wyoming Province is subdivided into five subprovinces: three in the Archean core, (1) the Montana metasedimentary province, (2) the Bighorn subprovince, and (3) the Sweetwater subprovince, and two Archean terrains that may be allochthonous to the 3.0 Ga craton, (4) the Sierra Madre – Medicine Bow block, and (5) the Black Hills – Hartville block. A thick, fast lower crustal layer, imaged by Deep Probe, corresponds geographically with the Bighorn subprovince and may be an underplate associated with ca. 2.70 Ga mafic magmatism. The Sweetwater subprovince is characterized by an east–west tectonic grain that was established by three or more temporally related, late Archean, pulses of basin development, shortening, and arc magmatism. This tectonic grain, including the 2.62 Ga Oregon Trail structure, controlled the locations and orientations of Proterozoic rifting and Laramide uplifts. The present-day lithospheric architecture of the Wyoming Province is the result of cumulative processes of crustal growth and tectonic modification; lithospheric contrasts have apparently persisted for billions of years. If there has been any net crustal growth of the Wyoming Province since 3.0 Ga, it has involved a combination of mafic underplating and arc magmatism.

Structural mapping and U-Pb dates from mafic sills in the Perma culmination of west-central Montana constrain the timing of a major rifting event in the early history of the Belt basin. Magmatic zircon from the Plains and Paradise mafic sills within the Prichard Formation yielded U-Pb ages of 1469 ± 2.5 and 1457 ± 2 Ma, respectively. The older sill invaded unconsolidated, wet sediments at a depth of less than 1.6 km, and its emplacement is coeval with widespread soft-sediment folding, mud diapirism, and bathymetric collapse of the basin between members E and F of the Prichard Formation. The youngest sill intruded near the base of the exposed section after significant accumulation of sediment had occurred in the basin. Correlation of these data with recent geochronologic results from the Moyie sills in British Columbia and Purcell lava in Montana suggests that the rifting and subsidence event was basin-wide, and that at least two thirds of the deposition of the Belt Supergroup occurred between ~1470 and 1440 Ma. These results support a continental rift model for the formation of the Belt basin.

New U–Pb zircon dates on diabase, diorite, and migmatites within a large magmatic complex in east-central Idaho have refined the age and tectonic setting of the East Kootenay orogeny that affected the Belt basin ca. 1370 Ma. These data show that a large volume of mafic magma was injected into the basin in east-central Idaho and followed shortly thereafter by its own felsic differentiate and granitic plutons and metamorphism of the host sediments ca. 1370 Ma. These data show that the magmatic complex and associated gneisses in east-central Idaho are not pre-Belt basement, but contemporaneous in age with the Belt basin. Nd isotopic analysis of the magmatic rocks establishes that they are not derived from known Proterozoic or Archean basement terranes, but could have formed from the host Yellowjacket Formation or juvenile 1.7 Ga crust. Nd isotopic composition of gneisses and the Yellowjacket Formation are interpreted to support previous correlations between these rocks and the Belt Supergroup. Metamorphic barometry on 1370 Ma migmatites intercalated with the magmatic complex constrain the metamorphism to pressures of 450 MPa (14 km) initially and show that pressure increased to 650 MPa (20 km) before the end of metamorphism, which is consistent with magma intrusion into the bottom of the basin, followed by basin subsidence and sediment loading. We postulate that the East Kootenay orogeny is a pulse of bimodal magmatism, basin rifting, and renewed subsidence and sedimentation that shortly preceded the end of deposition in the Belt basin.
