A 5-year-old spayed female German shepherd dog was referred for diagnostic evaluation and treatment of progressive exophthalmos, conjunctival hyperemia, and protrusion of the third eyelid of the left eye. Computed tomography revealed a retrobulbar mass of the orbit, exhibiting radio attenuation consistent with adipose tissue and well-defined margins. No evidence of metastasis was detected on thoracic radiographs or abdominal ultrasound. Cytological evaluation of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirates was inconclusive. A ventral transpalpebral anterior orbitotomy approach facilitated excision of the abnormal retrobulbar tissue. Histopathology revealed mature adipose cells compatible with a lipoma. The patient regained normal appearance and function 3 months after surgery. Key clinical message: While rare, consider a lipoma as a differential diagnosis for a retrobulbar mass. The ventral transpalpebral orbitotomy has been described in only 3 cases in the veterinary literature, and this is the only known report of utilizing this approach for excision of a neoplastic condition., (Copyright and/or publishing rights held by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.)

Multicentric B-cell lymphoma with extensive retrobulbar involvement was diagnosed in a 6-year-old Nubian goat that was presented with conjunctival swelling and exophthalmos. Serologic testing for bovine leukemia virus (BLV) was negative. Postmortem computed tomography aided in identification of the extent of soft tissue and bone lesions.

A 4-year-old Holstein cow presented with severe bilateral exophthalmos. A complete blood cell count revealed late stage lymphoma; the agar gel immunodiffusion test for enzootic bovine leukosis was positive. The cow was euthanized 1 wk after presentation. Necropsy revealed generalized lymphadenopathy and tumors in most organs. Final diagnosis was lymphosarcoma.

Six cases of ocular lymphocystis, a virus disease, are described. Lymphocystis is generally known as a benigh, unique, giant cell disease of fishes causing nodules on the skin and fins. It has been studied extensively because of the virus-host cell relationship that results in extreme size and lack of quick cellular destruction or stimulation to neoplasia. Lymphocystis cells were found behind or in one or both eyes and were also found on the cornea or adjacent skin surfaces. A retrobulbar mass produced extreme exophthalmos. Uveal (choroid and iris) masses were present in most cases. Optic nerve involvement was also seen. It is probable that the virus reached the eye by the blood with the resulting masses forming in situ rather than by direct extension from skin lesions.
