The article presents information related to monitoring of earthquakes. It reports that the first recorded attempts to monitor earthquakes were made in China in the second century AD. But many centuries passed before such devices did any more than acknowledge that an earthquake had occurred. During the past 200 years, people have attempted to measure earth movements, often using a pendulum with some method of marking how much the earth around it had moved. Seismometers keep track of where quakes strike and how much energy they give off.
