The article discusses the future of journalism as a profession less dependent on investigative journalists such as Ida M. Tarbell, who wrote a seminar series of articles for "McClure's Magazine" on the Standard Oil Company in the early 20th century, and more dependent on a model of network-driven citizen journalism that is based on collaboration with a readership. Topics include the importance of public-interest reporting and criticism of several thinkers such as Jeff Jarvis, Clay Shirky, Jay Rosen, Dan Gillmor, and John Paton who advocate civic journalism and the rise digital networks of journalism.
