Methane (CH4) is a powerful greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 84 times higher than carbon dioxide (CO2) over 20 years. CH4 is produced from many natural and anthropogenic sources which can be further classified as biogenic or thermogenic in origin. The largest biogenic sources result from anaerobic decay such as wetlands, melting permafrost, or the breakdown of organic matter in the guts of ruminant animals. Thermogenic CH4 is generated during the breakdown of organic matter at high temperatures and pressure within the Earth's crust, a process which also produces more complex trace hydrocarbons such as ethane (C2H6) and propane (C3H8). Emissions of thermogenic CH4 are dominated by the fossil fuel energy sector, and the presence of elevated C2H6 along with CH4 can be used to distinguish oil and gas emissions from biogenic sources. This work outlines the development and deployment of an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) outfitted with a fast (1 Hz) and sensitive (1–2 ppb s-1) CH4 & C2H6 sensor and ultrasonic anemometer. The UAV platform is a vertical-takeoff, hexarotor vehicle capable of vertical profiling to 120 m altitude and plume sampling across scales up to 1 km. This system has been used for direct quantification of point sources, as well as distributed emitters such as landfills, with source rates as low as 0.04 kg h-1 and up to 1500 kg h-1. Simultaneous measurements of CH4 and C2H6 mixing ratios, vector winds, and positional data allows for source classification (biogenic versus thermogenic), differentiation, and emission rates without the need for modeling or a priori assumptions about winds, vertical mixing, or other environmental conditions. The UAS has been deployed throughout the Southwest United States for system validation and targeted quantification of various sources emitting at or below the detection limits of other aircraft and satellite systems. This system offers a direct, repeatable method of horizontal and vertical profiling of emission plumes at scales that provide complementary information for regional aerial surveys as well as local ground-based monitoring. Air-sea carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes have recently been reported for the US South Atlantic Bight (SAB), a low-latitude shallow continental shelf bordered landward by abundant salt marshes and rivers. In this study, influences of terrestrial inputs on sea surface partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in the SAB are quantified. After re- moving pCO2 variations due to the annual temperature cycle and air-sea gas ex- change from the in situ pCO2, temperature and gas exchange corrected (TG-corrected) pCO2 is derived. Contributions from the river, marsh, and continental shelf to the TG-corrected pCO2 are then calculated. Findings show that CO2 contributions from the river [ΔpCO2 (river)] are highest close to the coast and decrease with distance off-shore. For example, ΔpCO2 (river) was up to 30 µatm on the inner shelf but averaged only 0--3 µatm on the outer shelf during January and March 2005. CO2 contributions from salt marshes [ΔpCO2 (marsh)] show similar spatial and seasonal distributions as ΔpCO2 (river), with the magnitude of ΔpCO2 (marsh) being about three times as high as that of ΔpCO2 (river). CO2 contributions from within the shelf [ΔpCO2 (shelf)] are highest among the three components. Compared to ΔpCO2 (river) and ΔpCO2 (marsh), ΔpCO2 (shelf) show the smallest onshore-offshore gradients. The global carbon cycle is experiencing continued perturbations via increases in atmospheric carbon concentrations, which are partly reduced by terrestrial biosphere and ocean carbon uptake. Greenhouse gas satellites have been shown to be useful in retrieving atmospheric carbon concentrations and observing surface and atmospheric CO 2 seasonal-to-interannual variations. However, limited attention has been placed on using satellite column CO 2 retrievals to evaluate surface CO 2 fluxes from the terrestrial biosphere without advanced inversion models at low latency. Such applications could be useful to monitor, in near real time, biosphere carbon fluxes during climatic anomalies like drought, heatwaves, and floods, before more complex terrestrial biosphere model outputs and/or advanced inversion modelling estimates become available. Here, we explore the ability of Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) column-averaged dry air CO 2 (XCO 2) retrievals to directly detect and estimate terrestrial biosphere CO 2 flux anomalies using a simple mass-balance approach. An initial global analysis of surface–atmospheric CO 2 coupling and transport conditions reveals that the western US, among a handful of other regions, is a feasible candidate for using XCO 2 for detecting terrestrial biosphere CO 2 flux anomalies. Using the CarbonTracker model reanalysis as a test bed, we first demonstrate that a well-established mass-balance approach can estimate monthly surface CO 2 flux anomalies from XCO 2 enhancements in the western United States. The method is optimal when the study domain is spatially extensive enough to account for atmospheric mixing and has favorable advection conditions with contributions primarily from one background region. We find that errors in individual soundings reduce the ability of OCO-2 XCO 2 to estimate more frequent, smaller surface CO 2 flux anomalies. However, we find that OCO-2 XCO 2 can often detect and estimate large surface flux anomalies that leave an imprint on the atmospheric CO 2 concentration anomalies beyond the retrieval error/uncertainty associated with the observations. The article discusses a study on the use of SCIAMACHY WFM-DOAS XCO2 to determine errors related to reduction of scattering. The study develops a new version of the retrieval algorithm (WFMDv2.2) to enhance the quality of the SCIAMACHY XCO2 data product. It validates the new XCO2 data using ground-based observations from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON). It also compares NOAA's global CO2 modelling and assimilation system CarbonTracker.

The limited available evidence about effects of high CO2 and acidification of our oceans on fish suggests that effects will differ across fish species, be subtle, and interact with other stressors. An experimental framework was implemented that includes the use of (1) multiple marine fish species of relevance to the northeastern USA that differ in their ecologies including spawning season and habitat; (2) a wide yet realistic range of environmental conditions (i.e., concurrent manipulation of CO2 levels and water temperatures), and (3) a diverse set of response variables related to fish sensitivity to elevated CO2 levels, water temperatures, and their interactions. This report is on an array of early life-history responses of summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus), an ecologically and economically important flatfish of this region, to a wide range of pH and CO2 levels. Survival of summer flounder embryos was reduced by 50% below local ambient conditions (7.8 pH, 775ppmpCO2) when maintained at the intermediate conditions (7.4 pH, 1860ppmpCO2), and by 75% below local ambient when maintained at the most acidic conditions tested (7.1 pH, 4715ppmpCO2). This pattern of reduced survival of embryos at higher CO2 levels was consistent among three females used as sources of embryos. Sizes and shapes of larvae were altered by elevated CO2 levels with longer larvae in more acidic waters. This pattern of longer larvae was evident at hatching (although longer hatchlings had less energy reserves) to midway through the larval period. Larvae from the most acidic conditions initiated metamorphosis at earlier ages and smaller sizes than those from more moderate and ambient conditions. Tissue damage was evident in older larvae (age 14 to 28 d post-hatching) from both elevated CO2 levels. Damage included liver sinusoid dilation, focal hyper-plasia on the epithelium, separation of the trunk muscle bundles, and dilation of the liver sinusoids and central veins. Cranial-facial features were affected by CO2 levels that changed with ages of larvae. Skeletal elements of larvae from ambient CO2 environments were comparable or smaller than those from elevated CO2 environments when younger (14d and 21 d post-hatching) but larger at older ages (28 d). The degree of impairment in the early life-stages of summer flounder due to elevated CO2 levels suggests that this species will be challenged by ocean acidification in the near future. Further experimental comparative studies on marine fish are warranted in order to identify the species, life-stages, ecologies, and responses that are most sensitive to increased levels of CO2 and acidity in near-future ocean waters, and a strategy is proposed for achieving these goals. Gross primary productivity (GPP) quantifies the amount of carbon dioxide (CO 2) fixed by plants through photosynthesis. Although as a key quantity of terrestrial ecosystems, there is a lack of high-spatial-and-temporal-resolution, real-time and observation-based GPP products. To address this critical gap, here we leverage a state-of-the-art vegetation index, near-infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIR V), along with accurate photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), to produce a SatelLite Only Photosynthesis Estimation (SLOPE) GPP product for the contiguous United States (CONUS). Compared to existing GPP products, the proposed SLOPE product is advanced in its spatial resolution (250 m versus >500 m), temporal resolution (daily versus 8 d), instantaneity (latency of 1 d versus >2 weeks) and quantitative uncertainty (on a per-pixel and daily basis versus no uncertainty information available). These characteristics are achieved because of several technical innovations employed in this study: (1) SLOPE couples machine learning models with MODIS atmosphere and land products to accurately estimate PAR. (2) SLOPE couples highly efficient and pragmatic gap-filling and filtering algorithms with surface reflectance acquired by both Terra and Aqua MODIS satellites to derive a soil-adjusted NIR V (SANIR V) dataset. (3) SLOPE couples a temporal pattern recognition approach with a long-term Cropland Data Layer (CDL) product to predict dynamic C4 crop fraction. Through developing a parsimonious model with only two slope parameters, the proposed SLOPE product explains 85 % of the spatial and temporal variations in GPP acquired from 49 AmeriFlux eddy-covariance sites (324 site years), with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 1.63 gC m -2 d -1. The median R2 over C3 and C4 crop sites reaches 0.87 and 0.94, respectively, indicating great potentials for monitoring crops, in particular bioenergy crops, at the field level. With such a satisfactory performance and its distinct characteristics in spatiotemporal resolution and instantaneity, the proposed SLOPE GPP product is promising for biological and environmental research, carbon cycle research, and a broad range of real-time applications at the regional scale. There is a widely recognized need to improve our understanding of biosphere-atmosphere carbon exchanges in areas of complex terrain including the United States Mountain West. CO2 fluxes over mountainous terrain are often difficult to measure due to unusual and complicated influences associated with atmospheric transport. Consequently, deriving regional fluxes in mountain regions with carbon cycle inversion of atmospheric CO2 mole fraction is sensitive to filtering of observations to those that can be represented at the transport model resolution. Using five years of CO2 mole fraction observations from the Regional Atmospheric Continuous CO2 Network in the Rocky Mountains (Rocky RACCOON), five statistical filters are used to investigate a range of approaches for identifying regionally representative CO2 mole fractions. Test results from three filters indicate that subsets based on short-term variance and local CO2 gradients across tower inlet heights retain nine-tenths of the total observations and are able to define representative diel variability and seasonal cycles even for difficult-to-model sites where the influence of local fluxes is much larger than regional mole fraction variations. Test results from two other filters that consider measurements from previous and following days using spline fitting or sliding windows are overly selective. Case study examples showed that these windowing- filters rejected measurements representing synoptic changes in CO2, which suggests that they are not well suited to filtering continental CO2 measurements. We present a novel CO2 lapse rate filter that uses CO2 differences between levels in the model atmosphere to select subsets of site measurements that are representative on model scales. Our new filtering techniques provide guidance for novel approaches to assimilating mountain-top CO2 mole fractions in carbon cycle inverse models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyze the transport of pollution across the Pacific during the NASA INTEX-B (Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment Part B) campaign in spring 2006 and examine how this year compares to the time period for 2000 through 2006. In addition to aircraft measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) collected during INTEX-B, we include in this study multi-year satellite retrievals of CO from the Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument and simulations from the chemistry transport model MOZART-4. Model tracers are used to examine the contributions of different source regions and source types to pollution levels over the Pacific. Additional modeling studies are performed to separate the impacts of inter-annual variability in meteorology and dynamics from changes in source strength. Interannual variability in the tropospheric CO burden over the Pacific and the US as estimated from the MOPITT data range up to 7% and a somewhat smaller estimate (5%) is derived from the model. When keeping the emissions in the model constant between years, the year-to-year changes are reduced (2%), but show that in addition to changes in emissions, variable meteorological conditions also impact transpacific pollution transport. We estimate that about 1/3 of the variability in the tropospheric CO loading over the contiguous US is explained by changes in emissions and about 2/3 by changes in meteorology and transport. Biomass burning sources are found to be a larger driver for inter-annual variability in the CO loading compared to fossil and biofuel sources or photochemical CO production even though their absolute contributions are smaller. Source contribution analysis shows that the aircraft sampling during INTEX-B was fairly representative of the larger scale region, but with a slight bias towards higher influence from Asian contributions. Continuous measurements of net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) using the eddycovariance method were made over an agricultural ecosystem in the southeastern US. During optimum environmental conditions, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was the primary climatic factor controlling daytime NEE, accounting for 67 to 89% of variations in NEE. However, soil water content (SWC) was the dominant factor limiting the NEE-PAR response during the peak growth stage, as NEE was significantly depressed when PAR exceeding 1300 µmol photonsm-2 s-1 coincided with a very low soil water content (SWC<0.04m³m-3). Hysteresis was observed between daytime NEE and PAR during periods of water-stress resulting from high vapor pressure deficit (VPD). This is significant since it limits the range of applicability of the Michaelis-Menten equation, and the likes, to determine daytime NEE as a function of PAR. The systematic presence of hysteresis in the response of NEE to PAR suggests that the gap-filling technique based on a non-linear regression approach should take into account the presence of water-limiting field conditions. Observations of CO2 were made in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere in the deep tropics in order to determine the patterns of large-scale vertical transport and age of air in the Tropical Tropopause Layer (TTL). Flights aboard the NASA WB-57F aircraft over Central America and adjacent ocean areas took place in January and February, 2004 (Pre-AURA Validation Experiment, Pre-AVE) and 2006 (Costa Rice AVE, CR-AVE), and for the same flight dates of 2006, aboard the Proteus aircraft from the surface to 15 km over Darwin, Australia (Tropical Warm Pool International Cloud Experiment, TWP-ICE). The data demonstrate that the TTL is composed of two layers with distinctive features: (1) the lower TTL, 350-360K (potential temperature(θ); approximately 12-14 km), is subject to inputs of convective outflows, as indicated by layers of variable CO2 concentrations, with air parcels of zero age distributed throughout the layer; (2) the upper TTL, from θ=~360K to ~390K (14-18 km), ascends slowly and ages uniformly, as shown by a linear decline in CO2 mixing ratio tightly correlated with altitude, associated with increasing age. This division is confirmed by ensemble trajectory analysis. The CO2 concentration at the level of 360K was 380.0(±0.2) ppmv, indistinguishable from surface site values in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) for the flight dates. Values declined with altitude to 379.2(±0.2) ppmv at 390 K, implying that air in the upper TTL monotonically ages while ascending. In combination with the winter slope of the CO2 seasonal cycle (+10.8±0.4 ppmv/yr), the vertical gradient of -0.78 (±0.09) ppmv gives a mean age of 26(±3) days for the air at 390K and a mean ascent rate of 1.5(±0.3) mms-1. The TTL near 360K in the Southern Hemisphere over Australia is very close in CO2 composition to the TTL in the Northern Hemisphere over Costa Rica, with strong contrasts emerging at lower altitudes (<360 K). Both Pre-AVE and CR-AVE CO2 observed unexpected input from deep convection over Amazônia deep into the TTL. The CO2 data confirm the operation of a highly accurate tracer clock in the TTL that provides a direct measure of the ascent rate of the TTL and of the age of air entering the stratosphere.
