The risk of water erosion in mainland China is intensifying due to climate change. A high-precision rainfall erosivity dataset is crucial for revealing the spatiotemporal patterns of rainfall erosivity and identifying key areas of water erosion. However, due to the insufficient spatiotemporal resolution of historical precipitation data, there are certain biases in the estimation of rainfall erosivity in China, especially in regions with complex terrain and climatic conditions. Over the past decade, the China Meteorological Administration has continuously improved its ground-based meteorological observation capabilities, forming a dense network of ground-based observation stations. These high-precision precipitation data provide a solid foundation for quantifying the patterns of rainfall erosivity in China. In this study, we first performed rigorous quality control on the 1-minute ground observation precipitation data from nearly 70,000 stations nationwide from 2014 to 2022, ultimately selecting 60,129 available stations. Using the precipitation data from these stations, we calculated event rainfall erosivity and generated a national mean annual rainfall erosivity dataset with a spatial resolution of 0.25°. This dataset shows that the mean annual rainfall erosivity in mainland China is approximately 1241 MJ·mm·ha−1·h−1·yr−1, with areas exceeding 4000 MJ·mm·ha−1·h−1·yr−1 mainly concentrated in the southern China and southern Tibetan Plateau. Compared to our study, previously released datasets overestimate China's mean annual rainfall erosivity by 31 %~65 %, and there are significant differences in performance across different river basins. In summary, the release of this dataset facilitates a more accurate assessment of the current water erosion intensity in China. Generating spatial crop yield information is of great significance for academic research and guiding agricultural policy. Existing public yield datasets have a coarse spatial resolution, spanning from 1 to 43 km. Although these datasets are useful for analyzing large-scale temporal and spatial change in yield, they cannot deal with small-scale spatial heterogeneity, which happens to be the most significant characteristic of the Chinese farmers' economy. Hence, we generated a 30 m Chinese winter wheat yield dataset (ChinaWheatYield30m) for major winter-wheat-producing provinces in China for the period 2016–2021 with a semi-mechanistic model (hierarchical linear model, HLM). The yield prediction model was built by considering the wheat growth status and climatic factors. It can estimate wheat yield with excellent accuracy and low cost using a combination of satellite observations and regional meteorological information (i.e., Landsat 8, Sentinel 2 and ERA5 data from the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform). The results were validated using in situ measurements and census statistics and indicated a stable performance of the HLM based on calibration datasets across China, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.81 and a relative root mean square error (rRMSE) of 12.59 %. With regards to validation, the ChinaWheatYield30m dataset was highly consistent with in situ measurement data and statistical data (p<0.01), indicated by an r (rRMSE) of 0.72** (15.34 %) and 0.69** (19.16 %). The ChinaWheatYield30m is a sophisticated dataset with both high spatial resolution and excellent accuracy; such a dataset will provide basic knowledge of detailed wheat yield distribution, which can be applied for many purposes including crop production modeling and regional climate evaluation. A high time resolution synchronous sampling method al ong with determination of stable carbon isotopes of gaseous water-soluble organic carbon (WSOCg) and particulate water-soluble organic carbon (WSOCp) was realized in this research through equipment modification and method improvement. It was found that WSOCg has significant higher concentration than WSOCp and a more depleted δ13C. Both concentrations of WSOCp and WSOCg have the seasonal variation characteristics of high in winter (WSOCp=15.7±3.9µg/m³; WSOCg=42.4±6.0µg/m³) and low in summer (WSOCp=5.9±1.8µg/m³; WSOCg=25.2±5.2µg/m³), with greater increase in WSOCp (167%) than that in WSOCg (68%). During wintertime, WSOCp and WSOCg had similar daily variation characteristics of concentration, and opposite daily variation characteristics of δ13C. WSOCp had a bimodal distribution with obvious low value at sunrise and sunset, while δ13C WSOCp had a unimodal distribution with low in daytime (-24.6±1.1‰) and high in nighttime (- 22.3±1.7‰). WSOCg and δ13C-WSOCg had same distribution with high in daytime and (49.3±8.8µg/m³; -27.9±1.1‰) low in nighttime (38.3±4.6µg/m³; -29.9±0.4‰). Combining the δ13C variation characteristics with the synchronous observation results of meteorological conditions, gaseous precursor pollutants, gaseous oxidants, gaseous acids and fine particle components, the restriction factors of WSOC gas-particle distribution mechanism were discussed. The presence of radiation rather than its intensity decided whether generations process of WSOCp and WSOCg are divided, for δ13C-WSOC of two phases showed significant correlation only during daytime. Meteorological conditions, gaseous precursor pollutants, gaseous oxidants and gaseous acids restrict the gas particle distribution of WSOC by affecting the aging process of WSOCp and WSOCg, gas particle conversion ratio of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) and the gas phase and liquid phase generation ratio of WSOCp. At the same time, the gas-particle distribution process of WSOC is strongly related to the formation of secondary inorganic ions (nitrate, sulfate, ammonium), and the gas-particle distribution between gaseous nitrous acid and nitrite. An accurate spatially continuous air temperature data set is crucial for multiple applications in the environmental and ecological sciences. Existing spatial interpolation methods have relatively low accuracy, and the resolution of available long-term gridded products of air temperature for China is coarse. Point observations from meteorological stations can provide long-term air temperature data series but cannot represent spatially continuous information. Here, we devised a method for spatial interpolation of air temperature data from meteorological stations based on powerful machine learning tools. First, to determine the optimal method for interpolation of air temperature data, we employed three machine learning models: random forest, support vector machine, and Gaussian process regression. A comparison of the mean absolute error, root mean square error, coefficient of determination, and residuals revealed that a Gaussian process regression had high accuracy and clearly outperformed the other two models regarding the interpolation of monthly maximum, minimum, and mean air temperatures. The machine learning methods were compared with three traditional methods used frequently for spatial interpolation: inverse distance weighting, ordinary kriging, and ANUSPLIN (Australian National University Spline). Results showed that the Gaussian process regression model had higher accuracy and greater robustness than the traditional methods regarding interpolation of monthly maximum, minimum, and mean air temperatures in each month. A comparison with the TerraClimate (Monthly Climate and Climatic Water Balance for Global Terrestrial Surfaces), FLDAS (Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Land Data Assimilation System), and ERA5 (ECMWF, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, Climate Reanalysis) data sets revealed that the accuracy of the temperature data generated using the Gaussian process regression model was higher. Finally, using the Gaussian process regression method, we produced a long-term (January 1951 to December 2020) gridded monthly air temperature data set, with 1 km resolution and high accuracy for China, which we named GPRChinaTemp1km. The data set consists of three variables: monthly mean air temperature, monthly maximum air temperature, and monthly minimum air temperature. The obtained GPRChinaTemp1km data were used to analyse the spatiotemporal variations of air temperature using Theil–Sen median trend analysis in combination with the Mann–Kendall test. It was found that the monthly mean and minimum air temperatures across China were characterised by a significant trend of increase in each month, whereas monthly maximum air temperatures showed a more spatially heterogeneous pattern, with significant increase, non-significant increase, and non-significant decrease. Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) has altered the radiation balance on Earth and raised environmental and health risks for decades but has only been monitored widely since 2013 in China. Historical long-term PM 2.5 records with high temporal resolution are essential but lacking for both research and environmental management. Here, we reconstruct a site-based PM 2.5 dataset at 6 h intervals from 1960 to 2020 that combines long-term visibility, conventional meteorological observations, emissions, and elevation. The PM 2.5 concentration at each site is estimated based on an advanced machine learning model, LightGBM, that takes advantage of spatial features from 20 surrounding meteorological stations. Our model's performance is comparable to or even better than those of previous studies in by-year cross validation (CV) (R2=0.7) and spatial CV (R2=0.76) and is more advantageous in long-term records and high temporal resolution. This model also reconstructs a 0.25 ∘ × 0.25 ∘ , 6-hourly, gridded PM 2.5 dataset by incorporating spatial features. Deriving large-scale and high-quality precipitation products from satellite remote-sensing spectral data is always challenging in quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), and limited studies have been conducted even using China's latest Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) geostationary satellite. Taking three rainstorm events over South China as examples, a machine-learning-based regression model was established using the random forest (RF) method to derive QPE from FY-4A observations, in conjunction with cloud parameters and physical quantities. The cross-validation results indicate that both daytime (DQPE) and nighttime (NQPE) RF algorithms performed well in estimating QPE, with the bias score, correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error of DQPE (NQPE) of 2.17 (2.42), 0.79 (0.83) and 1.77 mmh-1 (2.31 mmh-1), respectively. Overall, the algorithm has a high accuracy in estimating precipitation under the heavy-rain level or below. Nevertheless, the positive bias still implies an overestimation of precipitation by the QPE algorithm, in addition to certain misjudgements from non-precipitation pixels to precipitation events. Also, the QPE algorithm tends to underestimate the precipitation at the rainstorm or even above levels. Compared to single-sensor algorithms, the developed QPE algorithm can better capture the spatial distribution of land-surface precipitation, especially the centre of strong precipitation. Marginal difference between the data accuracy over sites in urban and rural areas indicate that the model performs well over space and has no evident dependence on landscape. Deriving large-scale and high-quality precipitation products from satellite remote sensing spectral data is always challenging in quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), and limited studies have been conducted even using the China's latest Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) geostationary satellite. Taking three rainstorm events over South China as examples, a Random Forest (RF) model framework for FY-4A QPE during daytime/nighttime is established by using FY-4A multi-band spectral information, cloud parameters, high-density precipitation observations, and physical quantities from reanalysis data. During daytime (nighttime), the probability of detection of the RF model for precipitation is 0.99 (0.99), while the correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error between the retrieved and observed precipitation are 0.77 (0.82) and 1.84 (2.32) mm/h, respectively, indicating that the RF model of FY-4A QPE has high precipitation retrieval accuracy. In particular, the RF model exhibits good spatiotemporal predictive ability for precipitation intensities within the range of 0.5–10 mm/h. For the retrieved accumulated precipitation, the precipitation intensity exhibits a greater impact on the predictive ability of the QPE algorithm than the precipitation duration. Due to the higher density of automatic stations in urban areas, the accuracy of FY-4A QPE over such areas is higher compared with rural areas. Both the accumulated precipitation and the distribution density of automatic stations are more important factors for the predictive ability of the RF model of FY-4A QPE. Although great progress has been made in estimating surface solar radiation (Rs) from meteorological observations, satellite retrieval, and reanalysis, getting best-estimated long-term variations in Rs are sorely needed for climate studies. It has been shown that Rs data derived from sunshine duration (SunDu) can provide reliable long-term variability, but such data are available at sparsely distributed weather stations. Here, we merge SunDu-derived Rs with satellite-derived cloud fraction and aerosol optical depth (AOD) to generate high-spatial-resolution (0.1 ∘) Rs over China from 2000 to 2017. The geographically weighted regression (GWR) and ordinary least-squares regression (OLS) merging methods are compared, and GWR is found to perform better. Based on the SunDu-derived Rs from 97 meteorological observation stations, which are co-located with those that direct Rs measurement sites, the GWR incorporated with satellite cloud fraction and AOD data produces monthly Rs with R2=0.97 and standard deviation =11.14 Wm-2 , while GWR driven by only cloud fraction produces similar results with R2=0.97 and standard deviation =11.41 Wm-2. This similarity is because SunDu-derived Rs has included the impact of aerosols. This finding can help to build long-term Rs variations based on cloud data, such as Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) cloud retrievals, especially before 2000, when satellite AOD retrievals are not unavailable. We developed the WRF-GC model, an online coupling of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) mesoscale meteorological model and the GEOS-Chem atmospheric chemistry model, for regional atmospheric chemistry and air quality modeling. WRF and GEOS-Chem are both open-source community models. WRF-GC offers regional modellers access to the latest GEOS-Chem chemical module, which is state of the science, well documented, traceable, benchmarked, actively developed by a large international user base, and centrally managed by a dedicated support team. At the same time, WRF-GC enables GEOS-Chem users to perform high-resolution forecasts and hindcasts for any region and time of interest. WRF-GC uses unmodified copies of WRF and GEOS-Chem from their respective sources; the coupling structure allows future versions of either one of the two parent models to be integrated into WRF-GC with relative ease. Within WRF-GC, the physical and chemical state variables are managed in distributed memory and translated between WRF and GEOS-Chem by the WRF-GC coupler at runtime. We used the WRF-GC model to simulate surface PM 2.5 concentrations over China during 22 to 27 January 2015 and compared the results to surface observations and the outcomes from a GEOS-Chem Classic nested-China simulation. Both models were able to reproduce the observed spatiotemporal variations of regional PM 2.5 , but the WRF-GC model (r=0.68 , bias =29 %) reproduced the observed daily PM 2.5 concentrations over eastern China better than the GEOS-Chem Classic model did (r=0.72 , bias =55 %). This was because the WRF-GC simulation, nudged with surface and upper-level meteorological observations, was able to better represent the pollution meteorology during the study period. The WRF-GC model is parallelized across computational cores and scales well on massively parallel architectures. In our tests where the two models were similarly configured, the WRF-GC simulation was 3 times more efficient than the GEOS-Chem Classic nested-grid simulation due to the efficient transport algorithm and the Message Passing Interface (MPI)-based parallelization provided by the WRF software framework. WRF-GC v1.0 supports one-way coupling only, using WRF-simulated meteorological fields to drive GEOS-Chem with no chemical feedbacks. This was mainly because our WRF-GC simulation, nudged with surface and upper-level meteorological observations, was able to better represent the spatiotemporal variability of the planetary boundary layer heights over China during the simulation period. Both parent models and the WRF-GC Coupler are parallelized across computational cores and can scale to massively parallel architectures. The WRF-GC simulation was three times more efficient than the GEOS-Chem nested-grid simulation at similar resolutions and for the same number of computational cores, owing to the more efficient transport algorithm and the MPI-based parallelization provided by the WRF software framework. WRF-GC scales nearly perfectly up to a few hundred cores on a variety of computational platforms. Version 1.0 of the WRF-GC model supports one-way coupling only, using WRF-simulated meteorological fields to drive GEOS-Chem with no feedbacks from GEOS-Chem. The development of two-way coupling capabilities, i.e., the ability to simulate radiative and microphysical feedbacks of chemistry to meteorology, is under-way. The main aim of this paper is to update existing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission inventories over China using modern inversion techniques, state-of-the-art chemistry transport modelling (CTM) and satellite observations of SO2. Within the framework of the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) MarcoPolo (Monitoring and Assessment of Regional air quality in China using space Observations) project, a new SO2 emission inventory over China was calculated using the CHIMERE v2013b CTM simulations, 10 years of Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI)/Aura total SO2 columns and the pre-existing Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC v1.2). It is shown that including satellite observations in the calculations increases the current bottom-up MEIC inventory emissions for the entire domain studied (15-55° N, 102-132° E) from 26.30 to 32.60 Tg annum-1, with positive updates which are stronger in winter (~36 % increase). New source areas were identified in the southwest (25-35° N, 100-110° E) as well as in the northeast (40-50° N, 120-130° E) of the domain studied as high SO2 levels were observed by OMI, resulting in increased emissions in the a posteriori inventory that do not appear in the original MEIC v1.2 dataset. Comparisons with the independent Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research, EDGAR v4.3.1, show a satisfying agreement since the EDGAR 2010 bottom-up database provides 33.30 Tg annum-1 of SO2 emissions. When studying the entire OMI/Aura time period (2005 to 2015), it was shown that the SO2 emissions remain nearly constant before the year 2010, with a drift of -0.51 ± 0.38 Tg annum-1, and show a statistically significant decline after the year 2010 of -1.64 ± 0.37 Tg annum-1 for the entire domain. Similar findings were obtained when focusing on the greater Beijing area (30-40° N, 110-120° E) with pre-2010 drifts of -0.17 ± 0.14 and post-2010 drifts of -0.47 ± 0.12 Tg annum-1. The new SO2 emission inventory is publicly available and forms part of the official EU MarcoPolo emission inventory over China, which also includes updated NOx, volatile organic compounds and particulate matter emissions. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) zenith total delay (ZTD) observations canprovide moisture-related information with high spatial and temporal resolution and have beenan important data source of assimilation and forecast system. In this study, the impact ofassimilating ZTD observations within the weather research forecast (WRF) model isevaluated. The ZTD observations from 75 stations of Hubei CORS in central China areobtained during the period of Feb. 28 to Mar. 2, 2018 which precipitation event occurs.Different experiments are implemented including a reference experiment with no dataassimilated, a GNSS experiment with only ZTD data assimilated and a multi-source dataexperiment with ZTD and other meteorological observations assimilated simultaneously. Theresult demonstrates a positive impact on short-range precipitation forecasts whenGNSS ZTD observations are assimilated and the most significant improvementin forecast is obtained when GNSS ZTD data are assimilated together with othermeteorological observations into the WRF model. In addition, we have appliedthe ZTDs derived from WRF forecast products into the real-time precise pointpositioning (RT-PPP) as a constrained condition. The accuracy of WRF-derivedZTDs is assessed against with the post-processed GNSS-derived ZTDs. The resultshows that the WRF-derived ZTDs agree well with the GNSS-derived ZTDs. Theconvergence time of RT-PPP is also discussed, and result indicates that an improvementin convergence time is achieved by comparison with the standard PPP solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global warming is typically evaluated using trends in mean temperature. However, temperature is affected quite differently on sunny and cloudy days, with sunny days typically showing higher maximum temperature and greater diurnal temperature range. Here, we show that global warming is considerably stronger on sunny days. To do so, we evaluated warming trends using observations from meteorological stations in China and distinguish between sunny and cloudy days using rainfall records as a proxy. We find that warming trends on sunny days are about 50% higher than on cloudy days, and that 70-80% of the total temperature increase is contributed by sunny days. The main reason is likely to be a stronger sensitivity of atmospheric emissivity to water vapor on sunny days, which would be dominated by clouds on cloudy days, resulting in a stronger water vapor feedback on sunny days. Our results are consistent with observations that drier regions show stronger warming trends and imply that the anticipated greater frequency of heatwaves under global warming may mostly be attributable to this greater sensitivity of sunny days to the greenhouse forcing.
