Fjords are deep nearshore zones that connect watersheds and oceans, typically behaving as an estuary. In some fjords, strong katabatic winds in winter (also known as Arctic outflow wind events) can lead to cooling and reoxygenation of subsurface waters, with effects lasting until the following autumn, as observed in 2019 in Bute Inlet, British Columbia, Canada. We used high-resolution, three-dimensional ocean model summer simulations to investigate the mechanisms allowing for the persistence of these cool, oxygen-rich subsurface conditions in Bute Inlet. The slow residual circulation underneath the brackish outflow (and consequent slow advection) in this long, deep fjord is a main reason why the cold subsurface water mass stays in place until conditions change in autumn (i.e., start of stronger wind mixing and reduced freshwater forcing). Another mechanism is a positive feedback provided by the presence of this subsurface water mass, since it further reduces the already weak residual circulation. These findings are applicable to any similar long, deep fjord that experiences katabatic winds in winter, and they could have implications not only for the preservation of water masses but other possible subsurface features (e.g., pollutant spills, planktonic larvae). Furthermore, the identification of mechanisms that permit persistent cold and oxygenated conditions is key to understanding potential areas of ecological refugia in a warming and deoxygenating ocean. Fjords are common geomorphological coastal features in the mid- and high-latitudes, carved by glacial erosion. These deep nearshore zones connect watersheds and oceans, typically behaving as an estuary. Many fjords in the world have shown concerning warming and deoxygenation trends in their deep waters, sometimes at faster rates than the open ocean. While that is the case in several fjords of British Columbia (BC), Canada, some of the same fjords have shown that strong Arctic outflow wind events in winter can lead to cooling and reoxygenation of subsurface waters, with effects lasting until the following autumn. The latter was observed in Bute Inlet, BC in 2019. We used a high-resolution, three-dimensional ocean model to investigate the mechanisms allowing for the persistence of these subsurface conditions through the year. The presence of the subsurface cold water mass reduced the already weak residual circulation, changing its vertical structure from three to four layers. The reduction of mixing and advection allowed for the water mass to stay in place until autumn conditions arrived (i.e., strong wind mixing and reduced freshwater forcing). The balance between ocean mixing and stratification influences primary productivity through light limitation and nutrient supply in the euphotic ocean. Here, we apply a hierarchical clustering algorithm (Ward's method) to four factors relating to stratification (wind energy, freshwater index, water-column-averaged vertical eddy diffusivity, and halocline depth), as well as to depth-integrated phytoplankton biomass, extracted from a biophysical ocean model of the Salish Sea. Running the clustering algorithm on 4 years of model output, we identify distinct regions of the model domain that exhibit contrasting wind and freshwater input dynamics, as well as regions of varying water-column-averaged vertical eddy diffusivity and halocline depth regimes. The spatial regionalizations in physical variables are similar in all 4 analyzed years. We also find distinct interannually consistent biological zones. In the northern Strait of Georgia and Juan de Fuca Strait, a deeper winter halocline and episodic summer mixing coincide with higher summer diatom abundance, while in the Fraser River stratified central Strait of Georgia, shallower haloclines and stronger summer stratification coincide with summer flagellate abundance. Cluster-based model results and evaluation suggest that the Juan de Fuca Strait supports more biomass than previously thought. Our approach elucidates probable physical mechanisms controlling phytoplankton abundance and composition. Wind-driven upwelling is an important control on surface nutrients and water properties in stratified lakes and seas. In this study, a high-resolution biophysical coupled model is used to investigate upwelling in the Strait of Georgia on the Canadian Pacific coast. The model is forced with surface winds from a high-resolution atmospheric forecast and has been tuned in previous studies to reproduce extensive observations of water level, temperature, salinity, nutrients and chlorophyll with competitive skill relative to similar models of the study region. A total of 5 years of hourly surface nitrate and temperature fields are analyzed in order to characterize the dominant upwelling patterns of the basin. A prevailing along-axis wind pattern steered by mountainous topography produces episodic upwelling along the western shore during the spring and fall southeasterlies and along the eastern shore during the summer northwesterlies, as indicated by positive nitrate anomalies. Principal component analysis reveals that these cross-axis upwelling patterns account for nearly one-third of the surface nitrate variance during the summer productive season. By contrast, nearly half of the surface temperature variance over the same period is dominated by a single, combined mixing and diurnal heating–cooling pattern. The principal components associated with these patterns correlate with along-axis wind stress in a manner consistent with these physical interpretations. The cross-axis upwelling response to wind is similar to other dynamically wide basins where the baroclinic Rossby deformation radius is smaller than the basin width. However, the nitrate anomaly during upwelling along the eastern shore is stronger in the northern basin, which may be indicative of an along-axis pycnocline tilt or an effect of the background along-axis stratification gradient due to the Fraser River. Ocean acidification threatens to reduce pH and aragonite saturation state (ΩA) in estuaries, potentially damaging their ecosystems. However, the impact of highly variable river total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) on pH and ΩA in these estuaries is unknown. We assess the sensitivity of estuarine surface pH and ΩA to river TA and DIC using a coupled biogeochemical model of the Strait of Georgia on the Canadian Pacific coast and place the results in the context of global rivers. The productive Strait of Georgia estuary has a large, seasonally variable freshwater input from the glacially fed, undammed Fraser River. Analyzing TA observations from this river plume and pH from the river mouth, we find that the Fraser is moderately alkaline (TA 500-1000μmolkg-1) but relatively DIC-rich. Model results show that estuarine pH and ΩA are sensitive to freshwater DIC and TA, but do not vary in synchrony except at high DIC:TA. The asynchrony occurs because increased freshwater TA is associated with increased DIC, which contributes to an increased estuarine DIC:TA and reduces pH, while the resulting higher carbonate ion concentration causes an increase in estuarine ΩA. When freshwater DIC:TA increases (beyond ~1.1), the shifting chemistry causes a paucity of the carbonate ion that overwhelms the simple dilution/enhancement effect. At this high DIC:TA ratio, estuarine sensitivity to river chemistry increases overall. Furthermore, this increased sensitivity extends to reduced flow regimes that are expected in future. Modulating these negative impacts is the seasonal productivity in the estuary which draws down DIC and reduces the sensitivity of estuarine pH to increasing DIC during the summer season. Ocean acidification threatens to reduce pH and aragonite saturation state (ΩA) in estuaries, potentially damaging their ecosystems. We assess the sensitivity of estuarine surface pH and ΩA to river chemistry using a 1-dimensional, biogeochemical-coupled model of the Strait of Georgia on the Canadian Pacific coast and generalize the results in the context of global rivers. The productive Strait of Georgia estuary has a large, seasonally variable freshwater input from the glacially fed, undammed Fraser River. Analyzing TA and pH observations from this river and its estuary, we find that the Fraser is moderately alkaline (TA 500-1350 μmol kg-1) but relatively DIC-rich, especially during winter (low flow). Model results show that estuarine pH and ΩA, while sensitive to freshwater DIC and TA, do not vary in synchrony. Instead, rivers with high DIC and TA produce lower estuarine pH due to an increased estuarine DIC : TA ratio, but higher estuarine ΩA because of DIC contributions to the carbonate ion. This estuarine pH sensitivity decreases with increasing mean river TA, but the zone of maximum pH sensitivity also moves to higher salinity which could impact a larger areal extent of the estuary. Many temperate rivers, such as the Fraser, are expected to experience weaker freshets and stronger winter flows under climate change, reducing the extent of the river plume and the impact of river chemistry in much of the estuary. However, increasing carbon in rivers will move the highest sensitivity zone to higher salinities that cover larger areas under present-day flow regimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
