Sea ice formation dominates surface salt forcing in the southern Weddell Sea. Brine rejected in the process of sea ice production results in the production of High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW) that feeds the global overturning circulation and fuels the basal melt of the adjacent ice shelf. The strongest sea ice production rates are found in coastal polynyas, where steady offshore winds promote divergent ice movement during the freezing season. We used the Finite Element Sea ice–ice shelf–Ocean Model (FESOM) forced by output from the regional atmospheric model COSMO-CLM (CCLM) with 14 km horizontal resolution to investigate the role of polynyas for the surface freshwater flux of the southern Weddell Sea (2002–2017). The presence of stationary icescape features (i.e., fast-ice areas and grounded icebergs) can influence the formation of polynyas and, therefore, impact sea ice production. The representation of the icescape in our model is included by prescribing the position, shape and temporal evolution of a largely immobile ice mélange formed between the Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf (FRIS) and a major grounded iceberg based on satellite data. We find that 70 % of the ice produced on the continental shelf of the southern Weddell Sea is exported from the region. While coastal polynyas cover 2 % of the continental shelf area, sea ice production within the coastal polynyas accounts for 17 % of the overall annual sea ice production (1509 km3). The largest contributions come from the Ronne Ice Shelf and Brunt Ice Shelf polynyas and polynyas associated with the ice mélange. Furthermore, we investigate the sensitivity of the polynya-based ice production to the (i) representation of the icescape and (ii) regional atmospheric forcing. Although large-scale atmospheric fields determine the sea ice production outside polynyas, both the treatment of the icescape and the regional atmospheric forcing are important for the regional patterns of sea ice production in polynyas. The representation of the ice mélange is crucial for the simulation of polynyas westward/eastward of it, which are otherwise suppressed/overestimated. Compared to using ERA-Interim reanalysis as an atmospheric forcing data set, using CCLM output reduces polynya-based ice production over the eastern continental shelf due to weaker offshore winds, yielding a more realistic polynya representation. Our results show that the location and not just the strength of the sea ice production in polynyas is a relevant parameter in setting the properties of the HSSW produced on the continental shelf, which in turn affects the basal melting of the Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf. We use a novel sea-ice lead climatology for the winters of 2002/03 to 2020/21 based on satellite observations with 1 km 2 spatial resolution to identify predominant patterns in Arctic wintertime sea-ice leads. The causes for the observed spatial and temporal variabilities are investigated using ocean surface current velocities and eddy kinetic energies from an ocean model (Finite Element Sea Ice–Ice-Shelf–Ocean Model, FESOM) and winds from a regional climate model (CCLM) and ERA5 reanalysis, respectively. The presented investigation provides evidence for an influence of ocean bathymetry and associated currents on the mechanic weakening of sea ice and the accompanying occurrence of sea-ice leads with their characteristic spatial patterns. While the driving mechanisms for this observation are not yet understood in detail, the presented results can contribute to opening new hypotheses on ocean–sea-ice interactions. The individual contribution of ocean and atmosphere to regional lead dynamics is complex, and a deeper insight requires detailed mechanistic investigations in combination with considerations of coastal geometries. While the ocean influence on lead dynamics seems to act on a rather long-term scale (seasonal to interannual), the influence of wind appears to trigger sea-ice lead dynamics on shorter timescales of weeks to months and is largely controlled by individual events causing increased divergence. The nonhydrostatic regional climate model CCLM was used for a long-term hindcast run (2002–2016) for the Weddell Sea region with resolutions of 15 and 5 km and two different turbulence parametrizations. CCLM was nested in ERA-Interim data and used in forecast mode (suite of consecutive 30 h long simulations with 6 h spin-up). We prescribed the sea ice concentration from satellite data and used a thermodynamic sea ice model. The performance of the model was evaluated in terms of temperature and wind using data from Antarctic stations, automatic weather stations (AWSs), an operational forecast model and reanalyses data, and lidar wind profiles. For the reference run we found a warm bias for the near-surface temperature over the Antarctic Plateau. This bias was removed in the second run by adjusting the turbulence parametrization, which results in a more realistic representation of the surface inversion over the plateau but resulted in a negative bias for some coastal regions. A comparison with measurements over the sea ice of the Weddell Sea by three AWS buoys for 1 year showed small biases for temperature around ±1 K and for wind speed of 1 ms-1. Comparisons of radio soundings showed a model bias around 0 and a RMSE of 1–2 K for temperature and 3–4 ms-1 for wind speed. The comparison of CCLM simulations at resolutions down to 1 km with wind data from Doppler lidar measurements during December 2015 and January 2016 yielded almost no bias in wind speed and a RMSE of ca. 2 ms-1. Overall CCLM shows a good representation of temperature and wind for the Weddell Sea region. Based on these encouraging results, CCLM at high resolution will be used for the investigation of the regional climate in the Antarctic and atmosphere–ice–ocean interactions processes in a forthcoming study. For an assessment of the roles of soil and vegetation in the climate system, a further understanding of the flux components of H2O and CO2 (e.g., transpiration, soil respiration) and their interaction with physical conditions and physiological functioning of plants and ecosystems is necessary. To obtain magnitudes of these flux components, we applied source partitioning approaches after Scanlon and Kustas (2010; SK10) and after Thomas et al. (2008; TH08) to high-frequency eddy covariance measurements of 12 study sites covering different ecosystems (croplands, grasslands, and forests) in different climatic regions. Both partitioning methods are based on higher-order statistics of the H2O and CO2 fluctuations, but proceed differently to estimate transpiration, evaporation, net primary production, and soil respiration. We compared and evaluated the partitioning results obtained with SK10 and TH08, including slight modifications of both approaches. Further, we analyzed the interrelations among the performance of the partitioning methods, turbulence characteristics, and site characteristics (such as plant cover type, canopy height, canopy density, and measurement height). We were able to identify characteristics of a data set that are prerequisites for adequate performance of the partitioning methods. SK10 had the tendency to overestimate and TH08 to underestimate soil flux components. For both methods, the partitioning of CO2 fluxes was less robust than for H2O fluxes. Results derived with SK10 showed relatively large dependencies on estimated water use efficiency (WUE) at the leaf level, which is a required input. Measurements of outgoing longwave radiation used for the estimation of foliage temperature (used in WUE) could slightly increase the quality of the partitioning results. A modification of the TH08 approach, by applying a cluster analysis for the conditional sampling of respiration–evaporation events, performed satisfactorily, but did not result in significant advantages compared to the original method versions developed by Thomas et al. (2008). The performance of each partitioning approach was dependent on meteorological conditions, plant development, canopy height, canopy density, and measurement height. Foremost, the performance of SK10 correlated negatively with the ratio between measurement height and canopy height. The performance of TH08 was more dependent on canopy height and leaf area index. In the present study a non-motion-stabilized scanning Doppler lidar was operated on board of RV Polarstern in the Arctic (June 2014) and Antarctic (December 2015- January 2016). This is the first time that such a system measured on an icebreaker in the Antarctic. A method for a motion correction of the data in the post-processing is presented. The wind calculation is based on vertical azimuth display (VAD) scans with eight directions that pass a quality control. Additionally a method for an empirical signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) threshold is presented, which can be calculated for individual measurement set-ups. Lidar wind profiles are compared to total of about 120 radiosonde profiles and also to wind measurements of the ship. The performance of the lidar measurements in comparison with radio soundings generally shows small root mean square deviation (bias) for wind speed of around 1ms-1 (0.1ms-1) and for wind direction of around 10° (1°). The post-processing of the non-motion-stabilized data shows a comparably high quality to studies with motion-stabilized systems. Two case studies show that a flexible change in SNR threshold can be beneficial for special situations. Further the studies reveal that short-lived low-level jets in the atmospheric boundary layer can be captured by lidar measurements with a high temporal resolution in contrast to routine radio soundings. The present study shows that a non-motionstabilized Doppler lidar can be operated successfully on an icebreaker. High-resolution MODIS thermal infrared satellite data are used to infer spatial and temporal characteristics of 17 prominent coastal polynya regions over the entire Arctic basin. Thin-ice thickness (TIT) distributions (≤ 20 cm) are calculated from MODIS ice-surface temperatures, combined with ECMWF ERA-Interim atmospheric reanalysis data in an energy balance model for 13 winter seasons (2002/2003 to 2014/2015; November to March). From all available MODIS swath data, daily thin-ice thickness composites are computed in order to derive quantities such as polynya area and total thermodynamic (i.e., potential) ice production. A gap-filling approach is applied to account for cloud and data gaps in the MODIS composites. All polynya regions combined cover an average thin-ice area of 226:6±36:1x10³ km² in winter. This allows for an average total winter-accumulated ice production of about 1811±293 km³, whereby the Kara Sea region, the North Water polynya (both 15%), polynyas on the western side of Novaya Zemlya (20%), as well as scattered smaller polynyas in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (all combined 12%) are the main contributors. Other wellknown sites of polynya formation (Laptev Sea, Chukchi Sea) show smaller contributions and range between 2 and 5%. We notice distinct differences to earlier studies on pan-Arctic polynya characteristics, originating in some part from the use of high-resolution MODIS data, as the capability to resolve small-scale (> 2 km) polynyas and also large leads are increased. Despite the short record of 13 winter seasons, positive trends in ice production are detected for several regions of the eastern Arctic (most significantly in the Laptev Sea region with an increase of 6.8 km³ yr-1) and the North Water polynya, while other polynyas in the western Arctic show a more pronounced variability with varying trends. We emphasize the role of the Laptev Sea polynyas as being a major influence on Transpolar Drift characteristics through a distinct relation between increasing ice production and ice area export. Overall, our study presents a spatially highly accurate characterization of circumpolar polynya dynamics and ice production, which should be valuable for future modeling efforts of atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions in the Arctic. The quantification of sea-ice production in the Laptev Sea polynyas is important for the Arctic sea-ice budget and the heat loss to the atmosphere. We estimated the ice production for the winter season 2007/2008 (November- April) based on simulations with the regional climate model COSMO-CLM at a horizontal resolution of 5 km and compared it to remote sensing estimates. A reference and five sensitivity simulations were performed with different assumptions on grid-scale and subgrid-scale ice thickness considered within polynyas, using a tile approach for fractional sea ice. In addition, the impact of heat loss on the atmospheric boundary layer was investigated. About 29.1 km³ of total winter ice production was estimated for the reference simulation, which varies by up to C124% depending on the thin-ice assumptions. For the most realistic assumptions based on remote sensing of ice thickness the ice production increases by C39%. The use of the tile approach enlarges the area and enhances the magnitude of the heat loss from polynyas up to C110% if subgrid-scale open water is assumed and by C20% for realistic assumptions. This enhanced heat loss causes in turn higher ice production rates and stronger impact on the atmospheric boundary layer structure over the polynyas. The study shows that ice production is highly sensitive to the thin-ice parameterizations for fractional sea-ice cover. In summary, realistic ice production estimates could be retrieved from our simulations. Neglecting subgrid-scale energy fluxes might considerably underestimate the ice production in coastal polynyas, such as in the Laptev Sea, with possible consequences on the Arctic sea-ice budget. The generation of new data sets of in-situ observations of the (ABL) in the high Arctic is necessary for the verification of regional climate models and process studies of the ABL. We performed measurements of the ABL structure for more than one year (start Oct. 2017, planned until Sept. 2019) at the Russian station Cape Baranov (79°18'N, 101°48'E), which is one of the northernmost observatories in the Arctic.ABL measurements were made using a SODAR (Sound Detection And Ranging), a RASS (Radio Acoustic Sounding System) and large-aperture boundary layer scintillometer (BLS). The SODAR yields vertical profiles of the wind speed, wind direction and the turbulence characteristics with a vertical resolution of 10m and a temporal resolution of 15-20min. The RASS extension allows for the determination of the temperature profile with the same resolution. In addition, the BLS was used to measure line-averaged sensible heat fluxes.Results of the measurements for the first year are presented. The height range of the SODAR wind profiles was typically around 400m (mean data availability 50%), temperature profiles from RASS are generally available for the lower 300m. A stably-stratified ABL is typical for wintertime conditions, but only few strong low-level jets were found. A topographical channeling effect for the wind field can be seen in the lowest 100m with the highest frequency of strong winds (larger than 10 m/s). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Boundary layer fronts (BLFs) associated with the sea ice front are associated with cold air outbreaks and the formation of meso-scale cyclones takes place at these low-level baroclinic zones in many cases. BLFs can also be regions of strong winds and low-level jets. During the aircraft-based experiment LEAST (Lead and ABL Study in the Transpolar System) around Svalbard in March 2014 boundary layer structures were studied in the marginal ice zone north of Svalbard. The research aircraft POLAR 5 of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI, Bremerhaven, Germany) was used.Because of an unusual warm winter in the Svalbard region (temperatures 15K above normal conditions in February 2014) a huge zone of open water extended north of Svalbard. On 13 March 2014, a BLF near the MIZ north of Svalbard associated with a remarkable convergence zone was measured using dropsondes. On the northward side of the BLF, a shallow (300m) cold air outbreak with near-surface temperatures of about -20°C and a southward wind component of 8m/s is observed, while on its southern side a well-mixed layer with -10°C (pot. temperature) associated with a low-level jet of 14m/s and a strong northward wind component (10m/s) is present in the lowest 500m.The regional climate model CCLM (nested in ERA5) is used in a forecast mode to simulate this event. CCLM is run for the whole Arctic with 15km resolution and for the Svalbard area with 5km resolution. The simulated BLF structures are compared with the in-situ measurements. CCLM profiles agree well with observations, but have time shift of 1h. CCLM shows exceptional high frontogenesis in the lowest 500m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
