There is a longstanding principle that the uppermost layer of aquatic sediment is the primary regulator of nutrient loads in the bottom water zone, pertaining to the fact that it is significantly biological in nature and thus the site of a myriad of biota-associated processes. Nevertheless, although this principle is seemingly obvious, there is unusually scant literature corroborating the impact of the uppermost sediment layer on water column nutrient fluxes, in particular soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). It has also been theorized that in certain environments, large bacteria play a major role in phosphorus cycling in the sediment. This challenges the prevailing dogma that the control of bottom water phosphate (PO43-) is mainly attributed to the SRP flux contribution from iron (Fe) oxide-bound P in sediment or remineralisation under anoxia and warming conditions respectively. In this study, elevated temperature as well as anoxic incubation treatments were set up to demonstrate that in response to an increased level of PO43- being released under stressful conditions, the topmost bed sediment layer (TBSL) has an unmistakable impact on P sequestration and stabilisation of the bottom water PO43- fluxes. Likewise, we also show that large filamentous microorganisms residing in the TBSL were seemingly active in polyphosphate (polyP) accumulation during these stress-inducing conditions. This therefore strongly points to a new and important biological sink for the SRP flux at the benthic layer of an aquatic environment.

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) acts as a source of fresh water and dissolved substances for coastal ecosystems. Evaluation of the actual controls on SGD and corresponding chemical fluxes require a closer understanding of the processes that take place in the mixing zone between SGD and the coastal waters. It is hypothesized that artificial infrastructures, like sediment channeling, may ease the hydrological connection between coastal aquifer and coastal bottom water. The resultant, increase of SGD, changes the residence time in the mixing zone, and thereby, reduces the impact of early diagenesis. The present study focuses on the distribution of SGD, including the characterization of different mixing zones in the urbanized Wismar Bay (WB), southern Baltic Sea. Short sediment cores were retrieved for geochemical porewaters and sediment analyses. Surface sea water samples were collected along across-shore transects in the WB. Besides major ions, Ba, Fe, and Mn, the water samples were analyzed for nutrients, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), stable isotopes (H, O, C, S), and Ra isotopes. Sediments were analyzed for C, N, S, Hg contents as well as reactive components (e.g. Fe, Mn, P) by HCl extractions. Organic matter mineralization rates, DIC, and SO4 fluxes for the sediment-water interface were modeled from porewater profiles. Shallow seismic techniques were applied to identify potential litho-morphological controls on SGD. Geochemical porewater data allow identification of active SGD sites in the WB. In the central part, the freshening of porewaters in the top surface sediments indicates the upward flow of SGD originating from a coastal aquifer. The acoustic profiles show that the bottom sediments in the central bay are under local impact of excavation, reducing the sediment thickness above the coastal aquifer. Overall, the impact of SGD on the coastal water body of the WB is diffuse and promoted by local anthropogenic activity. The water isotope composition of porewaters at this site are close to the local meteoric water line at Warnemünde (located 50 km east of the WB), suggesting a discharge of relatively modern fresh waters. The (isotope) hydrochemical composition of the fresh water discharging is controlled by water-rock interactions in the aquifer and modulated by intense diagenesis in the brackish surface sediments. Furthermore, the SGD facilitates the upward migration of elements and enhances their fluxes across the sediment-water interface, e.g. DIC concentrations in the fresh groundwater are further enhanced in the mixing zone, indicating that SGD is a potential source of excess CO2 in the investigated coastal waters.The investigations are supported by the DAAD, DFG RTS Baltic TRANSCOAST, KiSnet project, BONUS SEAMOUNT, FP7 EU Marie Curie career integration grant, DAM-MFG, and IOW.

High-latitude climate variations during Greenland Interstadials (GI) are expected to transfer globally in a complex way through interactions of fast atmospheric as well as slower cryospheric and oceanic processes. Prerequisite for an investigation of the evolution of GI is a climate independent synchronization of the considered paleoenvironmental archives. Measuring and aligning globally common production rate variations of the cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be in different archives provides a tool for such synchronizations and the investigation of environmental gradients in space and time, with minimized uncertainties in the relative timing.A 10Be time-series at < 40-year resolution was measured along with new proxy records down to sub-mm step size from Black Sea sediment core M72/5-22-GC8 around GI-10 (~41 ka BP). We synchronized our 10Be time-series to that from Central Greenland ice cores based on the globally common production rate variations using the globally optimal fit.Comparing the synchronized environmental proxy records points to a bipartite response of the Black Sea sediment record at the onset of GI-10. First, synchronous with the abrupt temperature increase in Greenland, costal sea ice decreases on the Black Sea, reflected by reduced sedimentary ice rafted debris contents. Second and with a lag of ~190 years, abrupt increases in the K/Ti proxy point to enhanced regional precipitation causing higher riverine sediment supply into the basin.This bipartite structure might be connected to both differential thresholds of proxy responses in Black Sea sediments to locally abrupt environmental forcing and/or a bipartite climate transition in the region in response to GI-10. The latter could possibly be explained by an initial fast atmospheric-transmitted warming in the Black Sea region synchronous to the onset of GI-10, followed by a shift from predominantly continental to Mediterranean weather systems ~190 years later, after regional oceanic adjustments. However, further investigations during more GIs are necessary to test the robustness of these results.

The anthropogenically forced expansion of coastal hypoxia is a major environmental problem affecting coastal ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles throughout the world. The Baltic Sea is a semi-enclosed shelf sea whose central deep basins have been highly prone to deoxygenation during its Holocene history, as shown previously by numerous paleoenvironmental studies. However, long-term data on past fluctuations in the intensity of hypoxia in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea are largely lacking, despite the significant role of these areas in retaining nutrients derived from the catchment. Here we present a 1500-year multiproxy record of near-bottom water redox changes from the coastal zone of the northern Baltic Sea, encompassing the climatic phases of the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), the Little Ice Age (LIA), and the Modern Warm Period (MoWP). Our reconstruction shows that although multicentennial climate variability has modulated depositional conditions and delivery of organic matter (OM) to the basin the modern aggravation of coastal hypoxia is unprecedented, and besides gradual changes in the basin configuration, it must have been forced by excess human-induced nutrient loading. The progressive deoxygenation since the beginning of 1900s was originally triggered by the combined effects of gradual shoaling of the basin and warming climate, which amplified sediment focusing and increased the vulnerability to hypoxia. Importantly, the anthropogenic eutrophication of coastal waters in our study area began decades earlier than previously thought, leading to a marked aggravation of hypoxia in the 1950s through fueling primary productivity, while we find no evidence of anthropogenic forcing during the MCA. These results have implications for the assessment of reference conditions for coastal water quality. Furthermore, this study highlights the need for combined use of sedimentological, ichnological, and geochemical proxies in order to robustly reconstruct subtle redox shifts especially in dynamic, non-euxinic coastal settings with strong seasonal contrasts in the bottom water quality.
