A new method for evaluating the pin-point effect of pile yam of carpets before weaving has been introduced. The method has been initially accomplished by presenting a standard method for bundle preparation and consequently the pin-point index is presented by image analysis technique. To this end, yams with different twists are heat set at various times and temperatures. Comparison of the results shows that increasing the twist, time and temperature positively contribute to the pin-point index. In the last section, an adaptive neurofuzzy model (ANFIS) and an artificial neural network model (ANN) have been designed to predict the pin-point index of the heat set yarns based on training with the experimental data. The input parameters are twist, time and temperature, and the output is the pin-point index. The results illustrate that the learning capability of the ANFIS model is superior and its generalization ability is slightly better than that of a standalone ANN model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The creep behaviour of braided cordages made of different high performance fibres, such as ultra high molecular weight extended chain polyethylene (Spectra® and Dyneema®), liquid crystalline polymer (Vectran®) and high tenacity nylon has been studied and then compared both during loading and relaxation phases. Nylon and Vectran® appear to have superior creep behaviour to that of Dyneerna® and Spectra®. The heat setting has been found to improve the creep behaviour of nylon cordages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The tensile behaviour of original and heat-set fine filament and microdenier polyester yarns treated with trichloroacetic acid-chloroform (TCAC) solvent system has been studied. The polyester yarn samples have been treated in a relaxed state with various concentrations of TCAC mixture at room temperature for different durations. It is observed that the TCAC treatment causes significant changes in strength and elongation behaviour of original fine filament and microdenier polyester yarns. The solvent-treated yarns exhibit higher breaking elongation, improved work of rupture and lower tenacity. The improvement in elongation and work of rupture is found to be less in the case of heat-set polyester yarns due to the subsequent TCAC treatment. The influence of treatment time and heat setting temperature on strength, elongation, yield behaviour and work of rupture of TCAC-treated yarns has also been investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
