The fabrication of hollow spheres with well defined size and morphology has been attracting much attention due to their unique structures and related physicochemical properties. Among the synthetic methods, the template-directed method is particularly interesting and extensively employed to fabricate hollow spheres due to templates available of essentially any size, shape, and chemistry. As a result, a new monodispersed cationic polystyrene (PS) template in this paper was fabricated by using 2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyltrimethylammonium chloride as co-monomer via emulsifier-free polymerization. The template not only can easily be tuned to the size, but can combine the advantages of hard-templating and soft-templating methods. Subsequently, we used cationic PS particles as templates to prepare hollow silica spheres – the results indicated that cationic templates can attract the assembly of tetraethylorthosilicate hydrolyzate on their surface and that the dissolution of templates can be done in the system of silica encapsulation by modification of the reaction conditions. Environmental context: β-Blockers are important chiral pharmaceuticals found as micropollutants in environmental waters as a result of incomplete removal during wastewater treatment. Because they display enantioselective toxicity, it is necessary to include chiral information in an environmental risk assessment. We have developed an analytical method using mesoporous silica for extracting β-blockers in water samples before their specific chiral analysis. The extraction and preconcentration of chiral β-blockers in environmental water was evaluated by solid-phase extraction (SPE) employing an SBA-15 ordered mesoporous silica functionalised with alkyl chains of different length. The materials were characterised by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm measurements and elemental analysis. Important parameters influencing extraction efficiency, including the type and amount of sorbent and the breakthrough volume, were optimised. The results obtained showed that the organic chain length played an important role in the behaviour of these sorbents. Under optimised conditions, using 200 mg SBA-15-C8 as sorbent, a simple analytical method based on off-line SPE coupled to chiral capillary electrophoresis with diode array detection (SPE-chiral CE-DAD) was developed. Method detection and quantification limits were lower than 0.6 and 1.9 µg L −1 respectively for all enantiomers, with a preconcentration factor of 500-fold. The method was successfully applied to the chiral analysis of atenolol, metoprolol, pindolol and propranolol in river and sewage water samples. Satisfactory recoveries (between 86 ± 2 and 98 ± 1 %) and repeatability (relative standard deviation (RSD) < 9 %, n = 3) were obtained. Metoprolol was detected in sewage water at a concentration of 10.7 and 9.9 µg L−1 and an enantiomeric fraction of 0.52 and 0.48 for the first- and the second-migrating enantiomers respectively. These results emphasise the importance of enantioselective analysis for environmental risk assessment. The contact of small solid particles and macroscopic flat planes with aqueous electrolyte solutions results in the accumulation of ions at the interface and the formation of the electrical interfacial layer. Analysis of well-defined monocrystal surfaces, which are the building blocks of a single particle, leads to a better understanding of surface reactions and mutual interactions of adjacent crystal planes on average surface properties of particles. We analyse inner surface potential (obtained by single-crystal electrode) and zeta-potential data (obtained by streaming potential measurements) that were obtained on identical samples. Among the systems for which comparable surface and zetapotentials are available, measured inner surface potential data for sapphire (0001), haematite (0001) and rutile (110) show the expected behaviour based on the face-specific surface chemistry model, whereas the slopes for rutile (110) and quartz (0001) do not. Isoelectric points for sapphire (0001), haematite (0001) and rutile (100) are in conflict with the standard model that implies consistent behaviour of surface potential and diffuse layer potential. For the two former systems, previous results from the literature suggest that the charge of interfacial water can explain the discrepancy. The water layer could also play a role for quartz (0001), but in this case, the discrepancy would simply not be noticed, because both point of zero potential and isoelectric point are low. Along with data on silver halides, it can be concluded that six-ring water structures on solids may generate the electrokinetic behaviour that is typical of inert surfaces like Teflon. Silica-based porous materials are popular adsorbents and have achieved marked success. However, one of the main challenges is surface functionalization for obtaining better removal performances. Therefore, in this paper we developed a hollow silica adsorbent with a well-defined morphology via a sodium silicate route. Compared with the conventional silica-based porous adsorbents prepared by the modified Stöber method, the synthesized hollow silica support exhibits many advantages such as low-cost silica source, and using only industrial commodities as starting materials and water as solvent. Excitedly, the resulting matrix can be used as a powerful separation tool to deal with environmental pollution because it is easy to separate from wastewater simply by centrifugation without any modification. The experimental results of absorption and separation on the neutral red indicate that low-cost hollow silica supports can evidently increase dye loading and decrease the rate of dye desorbed in comparison to conventional hollow silica adsorbents obtained via the Stöber method. We exhibit the first example of constructing high ordered macroporous silica adsorbent by using a low-cost silica source. This silica-based macroporous material can be useful as a powerful separation tool to deal with environmental pollution because it is easy to separate simply by centrifugation without any modification. Interestingly, the absorption and separation for neutral red show that it can increase absorbent amount of dye and decrease the rate of dye desorbed in comparison to conventional hollow silica obtained via the Stöber method. The preparation of hollow silica spheres via the sodium silicate route presents many advantages such as a low-cost silica source, and an environmentally friendly reaction system. Unfortunately, it is extremely hard to prepare the well-defined hollow silica spheres by using sodium silicate as the silica source owing to its rapid, disordered precipitation under the acid catalysis. As a result, we, in this paper, report a facile, economic, one-pot pathway for preparation of the ordered hollow silica spheres by employing a sodium silicate precursor. In this approach, the cationic polystyrene (CPS) templates can be first prepared via emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization by using the cationic monomer vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride, then, the silica shells were attached on the surfaces of CPS particles via electrostatic interaction, finally CPS particles were in situ dissolved and removed by adding toluene to create ordered hollow silica spheres. Some modern techniques and instruments, including the transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller theory were employed to monitor and characterize the resulting hollow silica spheres. High turfgrass wear resistance and recovery are the most sought after characteristics in turfgrass species when used for sports turf, but they are also very important in home gardens and public parks. Several wear resistance investigations have been conducted in field conditions in recent years, but these investigations involved the use of machinery and techniques that are not able to segregate the plant wounding and death effects from soil compaction effects that are generally associated with turfgrass wear. The same can be said of wear recovery investigations, with an extensive use of agronomical machinery for field trials. This study focussed on the wear resistance and recovery of mature swards of Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. var. dactylon × C. transvaalensis Burt-Davy cv. Tifway 419, Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr. cv. Zeon and Paspalum vaginatum Swartz. cv. Salam and a typical sports-type mix of Lolium perenne L. (cvv. Speedster 35% and Greenway 35%) + Poa pratensis L. (cvv. SR2100 15% and Greenknight 15%). The goal of this trial was to evaluate turfgrass wear resistance and recovery devoid of climatic and soil effects and thus, sward growing, wear simulation and recovery were conducted in controlled environment. Furthermore, wear simulation was conducted with FIFA-approved, numerical control machinery (Lisport). Wear resistance and recovery data was plotted against results from laboratory investigations on key tissue constituents. Zoysia matrella proved to be the most wear resistant, but the slowest in recovery, whereas the bermudagrass hybrid showed the exact opposite behaviour. Lignin and carbohydrate concentrations proved to be the two factors most closely correlated with wear resistance and recovery respectively. These two classes of compounds were present in an equilibrium that was species specific, with a frequent mutual exclusion between lignin and starch concentrations that deserves further investigation at the intra-specific level. The intrinsic resistance of plant tissue to several biomechanical stresses, including tensile stress, is a decisive factor in determining the wear resistance of a turfgrass species. Lignin, dry matter, starch, sugars and silica are some of the tissue constituents that have been associated with leaf and stem mechanical resistance, whereas little information is available concerning stolons and rhizomes. These organs not only enable C4 turfgrass species lateral growth, soil colonisation and injury recovery, but are also key constituents of mature swards. This study consisted in an extensive investigation on the effective leaf, stolon and rhizome tensile strength of Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. var. dactylon × C. transvaalensis Burt-Davy cv. Tifway 419, Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr. cv. Zeon and Paspalum vaginatum Swartz. cv. Salam, as measured with a Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)-approved dynamometer and correlating the results with laboratory investigations on key tissue constituents. Tensile strength per unit area was influenced by both tissue constituents and tissue dimension. In rhizomes and stolons, tissue breakage usually occurred in the area at the intercalary meristem at the apical zone in the immediate proximity of a node. Older tissues had higher tensile strength owing to their higher levels of lignification. Lignin was the principal constituent determining tissue tensile strength and as such it could be used as a turfgrass wear resistance predictor in the cultivar breeding stages. Stolon total soluble sugars were generally inversely proportional to lignin content and, therefore, can also be considered clear markers of tissue mechanical strength.
