In this paper, we introduce a new class of derivations that generalizes skew derivations and semi-derivations, and we call it skew semi-derivation. Furthermore, we present a study of the conditions under which this type of multiplicative derivation becomes additive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aggregated loads play a significant role in maintaining the frequency of power system when the generation is not able to follow frequency deviations. An automatic Demand Dispatch (DD) enables the power system to employ the aggregated loads for balancing demand and supply. In this paper, a Demand Side Frequency Droop (DSFD) has been proposed which provides ancillary service to the grid and maintains the frequency of the power system when the generation system is not capable of following the demand. At the time of a frequency fall/rise, Balancing Authority (BA) can detect aggregated load or group of aggregated loads that have power consumption above or below their standard maximum/minimum consumption levels. Then, the BA issues a droop-based signal to the relevant aggregator. Afterwards, the DSFD will be implemented in the aggregator or the group of aggregators to specify the required power consumption amount for bringing the frequency back to its rated level. Subsequently, this signal will be sent to the Appliance Management Unit (AMU) at each participating house. The AMU sends the signal in the form of deferral or interruptible commands to the appliances depending on the priority, availability and the specification of the appliances. Severe power quality problems can arise when a large number of single-phase distributed energy resources (DERs) are connected to a low-voltage power distribution system. Due to the random location and size of DERs, it may so happen that a particular phase generates excess power than its load demand. In such an event, the excess power will be fed back to the distribution substation and will eventually find its way to the transmission network, causing undesirable voltage-current unbalance. As a solution to this problem, the article proposes the use of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM), which regulates voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC), thereby ensuring balanced current flow from and to the distribution substation. Additionally, this device can also support the distribution network in the absence of the utility connection, making the distribution system work as a microgrid. This paper proposes a method for enhancing stability of an autonomous microgrid with distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) and power sharing with multiple distributed generators (DG). It is assumed that all the DGs are connected through voltage source converter (VSC) and all connected loads are passive, making the microgrid totally inertia less. The VSCs are controlled by either state feedback or current feedback mode to achieve desired voltage-current or power outputs, respectively. A modified angle droop is used for DG voltage reference generation. Power sharing ratio of the proposed droop control is established through derivation and verified by simulation results. A DSTATCOM is connected in the microgrid to provide ride through capability during power imbalance in the microgrid, thereby enhancing the system stability. This paper discusses the stability of an autonomous microgrid in which, load sharing by a gain scheduled angle droop controller with derivative feedback is proposed. It is assumed that all the DGs are connected through Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The VSCs are controlled by state feedback controller to achieve desired voltage and current outputs that are decided by a droop controller. First a load sharing strategy is derived in terms of droop controller gain and converter output inductance, combining angle droop controller and DC load flow analysis. Then state space models of converters with its associated feedback controller are derived to investigate system stability as a function of the droop controller gain and converter output inductance through eigen value analysis. It is shown that with proposed angle droop controllers, where the droop gains are scheduled based on the output power along with derivative feedback it is possible to achieve a higher stability margin with better load sharing. These observations are then verified through simulation studies using PSCAD/EMTDC. It will be shown that the simulation results closely agree with stability behavior predicted by the eigenvalue analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper discusses the operating principles and control characteristics of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). It is assumed that the source voltages contain interharmonic components in addition to fundamental components. The main aim of the DVR is to produce a set of clean balanced sinusoidal voltages across the load terminals irrespective of unbalance, distortion and voltage sag/swell in the supply voltage. An algorithm has been discussed for extracting fundamental phasor sequence components from the samples of three-phase voltages or current waveforms having integer harmonics and interharmonics. The DVR operation based on extracted components is demonstrated. The switching signal is generated using a deadbeat controller. It has been shown that the DVR is able to compensate these interharmonic components such that the load voltages are perfectly regulated. The DVR operation under deep voltage sag is also discussed. This paper investigates the use of trajectory sensitivity analysis (TSA) technique for assessing the transient stability of a power system at various operating conditions. The effect of placement of a thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) as well as the influence of the change in firing angle is also discussed. The TCSC is modeled by a variable capacitor, the value of which changes with the firing angle. The systems studied are the WSCC 3-machine, 9-bus system and IEEE 16 machine 68 bus system. This paper presents two different techniques of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) integration with an islanded microgrid (MG). The islanded microgrid operates in a frequency droop control where its frequency can vary around 50 Hz. The permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based variable speed WECS is considered, which converts wind energy to a low frequency ac power. Therefore it needs to be connected to the microgrid through a back to back (B2B) converter system. One way of interconnection is to synchronize the MG side converter with the MG bus at which it is connected. In this case, this converter runs at the MG frequency. The other approach is to bring back the MG frequency to 50 Hz using the isochronization concept. In this case, the MG side converter operates at 50 Hz. Both these techniques are developed in this paper. The proposed techniques are validated through extensive PSCAD/EMTDC simulation studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
