Southern New England Telecommunications Inc (SNET) is planning to acquire cellular telephone service territory rights from Bell Atlantic Corp and Nynex Corp at a cost of about $450 million. Bell Atlantic and Nynex are selling the rights to these territories as part of their Jun 1994 merger agreement with federal regulators that requires the companies to give up cellular services in areas where both companies offer service. SNET officials say that the acquisition of Bell Atlantic's territory in Rhode Island will add about 2.3 million subscribers to its cellular service area, giving that company 5.5 million potential subscribers. The acquisition is expected to give SNET a good position to compete with future competitors, which will include the merged Nynex and Bell Atlantic companies. SNET is also planning to test a service that will transmit videos over its telephone network in Connecticut.
