The existing solid waste management practice of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has been focused in this paper. Approximately 4000 - 4500 metric tons of solid waste is generated per day and they collect only 50%. DCC only collects waste from roadside stationary bins and demountable containers at different locations with 100 demountable trucks and 95 open trucks. These collected wastes are disposed of at different dumping sites without following any scientific disposal methods. There is no cleanliness standard and planning of waste management. Waste bins and containers are mainly placed on the side of main road or near any house that creates an obstruction for traffic flow. Due to this unplanned placement of bins and containers, creates social and environmental problem because of improper use, irregular cleaning and road blockage by collection vehicle, bad smell, rodent, vermin, flies and unhygienic condition. As a result, this management system creates great environmental problem by spreading odor, microorganisms as well as disease and producing leachate and gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
