Following two initial campaigns [1], Stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) has now completed the construction phase by installation of active cooling of all plasma facing components. The machine is presently commissioned for the next campaign (OP2) aiming at 1 GJ per pulse, e.g. 100 s at 10 MW, eventually aiming at 18 GJ, e.g. 1800 s at 10 MW. The key heating system is the Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) system, consisting of 10 gyrotrons with power per gyrotron ranging from 0.6 MW up to 1.0 MW at 140 GHz. A phased upgrade of the installation is in progress with the addition of 2 gyrotrons and the development of 1.5 MW and 2.0 MW gyrotrons, such that at the end of the upgrade 4 gyrotrons will be available in each power class of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 MW [2]. The increased ECRH power, combined with O2 and X3 heating schemes at high densities, will lead to increased microwave stray radiation. This is non-absorbed microwave power that diffuses inside the vessel and is incident on all in-vessel components including vacuum windows and attached diagnostic systems. A fraction of the stray radiation is absorbed by resistive or dielectric losses of these components, leading to thermal loads that scale with stray radiation levels and pulse length. At W7-X a high power microwave stray radiation launch facility 'MISTRAL' is available that is used to qualify invessel components for use at specified microwave surface power densities [Wm−2]. This paper reports on MISTRAL campaigns in 2020 2021 for testing of stray radiation loads during OP2 in W7-X, as well as on an EUROfusion program assessing stray radiation loads on ITER components. A dedicated, absolutely calibrated, caloric load was developed for the campaign to obtain measurement of stray radiation power levels as well as to conveniently expose samples. A new series of MW-class, RF loads were developed that can dissipate power levels exceeding 1.5 MW at frequencies from 28 GHz to 180 GHz. The new loads are designed to reflect less than 0.25% of the input power and operate continuously (CW). Stainless-steel and anodized aluminum versions were developed. The stainless steel version is designed to meet requirements for nuclear facilities, such as ITER, while the aluminum version is capable of power levels exceeding 2 MW CW. The ITER ECH&CD system is designed to inject 20 MW of millimetre-wave at 170 GHz into the vacuum vessel. The system is composed of many sub-systems, namely High-Voltage Power Supplies (HVPS), Gyrotrons, Transmission Lines (TL), Ex-vessel Waveguides (EW), Launchers. It is the role of the EC Plant Controller (ECPC) to integrate all the Sub-system Control Units (SCU), to prepare the system for operation and to execute the real-time requests coming from the plasma control system. The ECPC also implements plant level protection functions involving more than one sub-system and it interfaces with the ITER Central I&C. This paper gives an overview of the EC system and a description of the control system development focusing on the architecture and the interfaces. Control and protection functions are presented together with a functional allocation to better define interfaces and responsibilities. The integration of the voltage-source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) system makes the set-point of its active power adaptive to the changes in the power flow, and contributes to the curative congestion management. To further exploit the dynamic behavior of a hybrid AC/DC power system in curative congestion management scenarios, this paper investigates a novel control scheme for voltage angle droop controlled HVDC (VAD-HVDC) systems. The proposed scheme to alleviate the circuit overload is estimated firstly by calculating the severity index when the power flow changes under N-1 situations. Then the voltage angle controlled HVDC system is applied on the modified IEEE 39-bus 10-machine test power system for the time-domain simulation. The dynamic behavior in the HVDC station validates that the VAD control can stabilize the DC voltage and possess a good ability against interference. In addition, the dynamic characteristics analysis on the AC transmission lines proves that the hybrid AC/DC system integrated with the VAD controlled HVDC system are in possession of good stability after the N-1 contingency event. The VAD controller employed in the HVDC system is capable of effective congestion management to mitigate the critical loadings on the transmission lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) system of China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) is designed to inject 20 MW RF power into the plasma for heating and current drive (H&CD) applications. The ECRH system consists of 20 gyrotrons, the associated power supplies, the transmission lines and one launcher. In order to compare the launcher performance from equatorial and upper ports, two types of launcher are designed in this paper. In equatorial launcher (EL), twenty in-vessel transmission lines are divided into four groups. Every five gaussian beams from in-vessel transmission lines face one fixed focusing mirror and one steering mirror. All gaussian beams are injected into the plasma with optimal toroidal and poloidal angles calculated by C3PO/LUKE code. In upper launcher (UL), twenty-one transmission lines are supposed and divides into three groups. Every seven gaussian beams are injected into one fixed focusing mirrors and all twenty-one beams reflected to one common steering mirror finally. The optical transmission characteristics and the convergence information of gaussian beams are checked and optimized. This paper presents a review of the state of the art for fault location methods in transmission lines based on travelling waves. The motivations that led to these methods are explained historically. Also, a critical analysis, showing the advantages and disadvantages of each of them and their most common applications, is performed. Finally, a comparative analysis between two of the most widely used methods is carried out using real faults, in order to show the results' sensitivity to changes in the line parameters. The 2 MW cw requirement for ITER EC transmission lines has led GA to design a number of new and modified components, namely power monitors and polarizers to meet this requirement. In addition, the ITER transmission lines may require sliding joints or bellows to accommodate the thermal expansion of the lines and/or vessel motion. The ex-vessel sections of the EC launchers require double seal waveguides, miter bends and possibly double seal sliding joints to assure tritium retention in this region. GA has developed designs for many of these components and some of them have already been tested at high power at the JAEA RF Test Stand. Thermal analyses of the standard GA power monitor miter bend show that our standard design is suitable for 1 MW cw operation when the H-field is in the plane of the miter bend. For 2 MW cw operation a modified design, which also requires H-plane orientation, has been developed and a prototype has been fabricated and is ready for testing. For long pulse/cw operation, a 2 MW calorimetric miter bend with thermally isolated mirror has been designed and a prototype has been fabricated. Since the mirror is thermally isolated, calorimetry on the mirror cooling water can provide a measure of absorbed power. Such a miter bend, when made in a double seal version, could be useful for monitoring total power at the end of an EC transmission line just before the in-vessel section of an EC launcher. A mode analyzer using an all metal water-cooled beam splitter is being developed for use in measuring in real time the HE11 and higher order mode content or total power in EC transmission lines. Such a high power diagnostic can be very useful in optimizing the alignment of the MOU output into a transmission line and in monitoring the HE11 mode purity at various locations in a transmission line. Prior to making a 63.5 mm 170 GHz version suitable for use on ITER, several prototype 31.75 mm 110 GHz versions have been fabricated and tested at DIII-D. A 170 GHz version is now being fabricated. This paper addresses the performance characteristics, design features and test results for the new and modified components being developed to assure low loss transmission and acceptable component stresses for 2 MW cw opération. The ITER ECE diagnostic has recently been through a conceptual design review for the entire system including front end optics, transmission line, and back-end instruments. The basic design of two viewing lines, each with a single ellipsoidal mirror focussing into the plasma near the midplane of the typical operating scenarios is agreed upon. The location and design of the hot calibration source and the design of the shutter that directs its radiation to the transmission line are issues that need further investigation. In light of recent measurements and discussion, the design of the broadband transmission line is being revisited and new options contemplated. For the instruments, current systems for millimeter wave radiometers and broad-band spectrometers will be adequate for ITER, but the option for employing new state-of-theart techniques will be left open. Many future fusion devices will rely heavily, if not solely, on electron cyclotron (EC) heating subsystems to provide bulk heating, instability control (neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) stabilization), and thermal instability control. Efficient use of the installed heating power (gyrotrons) requires low-loss transmission of the power over 100s of meters since the mm-wave sources need to be installed where the stray magnetic field has a small amplitude. Transmission lines are used to propagate the mm-wave power over this long distance. Quasi-optical techniques (mirrors) are used at W7X and are planned for DTT, for example. Guided components are installed at DIII-D, TCV and elsewhere and are planned at JT60SA and ITER. High power test facilities exist to evaluate the power transmission of assemblies of guided components (transmission lines). The European test facility FALCON was setup by Switzerland and Fusion for Energy (F4E) in Lausanne Switzerland at the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) in the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Operations are funded through a framework contract with F4E. SPC operates the facility. Two ITER-class 170GHz gyrotrons are housed within the facility and used to evaluate the thermal behaviour of components provided by various ITER partners. Loss measurements are presented for miter bends and waveguides of several materials at two different diameters. The results are used to model the expected losses in the ITER ex-vessel waveguides (EW) of all five EC launchers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The DTT tokamak, whose construction is starting in Frascati (Italy), will be equipped with an ECRH system of 16 MW for the first operation phase and with a total of 32 gyrotrons (170 GHz, ≥ 1 MW, 100 s), organized in 4 clusters of 8 units each in the final design stage. To transmit this large number of power beams from the gyrotron hall to the torus hall building a Quasi-Optical (QO) approach has been chosen by a multi-beam transmission line (MBTL) similar to the one installed at W7-X Stellarator. This compact solution, mainly composed of mirrors in "square arrangement" shared by 8 different beams, minimizes the mode conversion losses. The single-beam QOTL is used to connect each gyrotron MOU output to a beam-combiner mirror unit and, after the MBTL, from a beam-splitter mirror unit to the exvessel and launchers sections located in the equatorial and upper ports of 4 DTT sectors. A novelty introduced is that the mirrors of the TLs are embodied in a vacuum enclosure, using metal gaskets, to avoid atmospheric absorption losses and microwave leaks. The TL, designed for up to 1.5 MW per single power beam, will have a total optical path length between 84 m and 138 m from the gyrotrons to the launchers. The main straight section will travel along an elevated corridor ~10 m above the ground level. The development of the optical design reflects the constraints due to existing buildings and expected neutron flux during plasma operation. MAST-Upgrade (MAST-U) is undergoing several enhancements to deliver increased performance and functionality. One such enhancement is the design, development, and implementation of an Electron Bernstein Wave (EBW) Heating and Current Drive (HCD) System. The MAST-U EBW System aims to provide experimental data for model validation, and to provide a greater understanding of EBW physics and its capabilities. The MAST-U EBW System provides up to 1.8 MW of microwave power into the plasma, through a system comprising: high voltage power supplies; two gyrotrons; evacuated transmission lines; a steerable in-vessel launching system; and associated control and ancillary systems. The gyrotrons from Kyoto Fusioneering have a 0.9 MW output power capability at the dual frequencies of 28GHz and 34.8GHz, allowing start-up and current drive studies to be carried out at their respective optimum frequencies. Additional diagnostics, termed interceptor plates, are proposed to sit in the path of the first reflection. These will measure the reflected power from the plasma, to both act as an interlock if the reflected power is too high, and provide key information on the coupling efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new 105 GHz/500 kW/1 s electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system has been designed and being constructed on J-TEXT Tokamak. This system mainly consists of a microwave source, a transmission line, a launcher and other auxiliary units. Based on corrugated waveguides, the wave from the gyrotron can be efficiently transmitted with HE11 mode to the steerable quasi-optical launcher for injection. The transmission efficiency is about 85%, and the injection angle of the wave can be adjusted by the flat mirror of the launcher. In ITER, an Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) diagnostic is planned to measure the electron temperature by measuring the cyclotron radiation in the frequency range of 70-1000 GHz. The cyclotron radiation is usually of low power and needs to be transported with low attenuation over a long distance of ~ 43 m, through a suitable transmission system. Pertaining to long distance, the transmission system will consist of straight waveguide sections, miter bends and waveguide joints. Low power, low loss transmission in a broadband frequency range over long distance makes the design of the transmission system challenging. To arrive at a suitable transmission system, attenuation measurements of three types of transmission lines (TLs) have been performed i.e. circular smooth walled, corrugated and dielectric coated waveguide. A polarizing Michelson interferometer based on Martin-Puplett design has been used to measure the spectrum from waveguide set ups and liquid nitrogen has been used as the black body radiation source. The measured spectrum shows atmospheric water vapour absorption lines in all types of TLs. The preliminary measurement shows that the attenuation of smooth walled waveguide is found to be comparable to corrugated waveguide up to ~ 600GHz and better than corrugated waveguide above 600 GHz for the chosen set of experimental conditions. Further, to avoid water absorption lines, a smooth walled TL is evacuated up to rough vacuum (~10-2mbar) and it was observed that the attenuation is decreased and overall transmission is improved. High Voltage (HV) equipment such as power switches, current or voltage transformers, and flexible HV transmission lines insulated by pressurized SF6 (or SF6/N2 mixtures) offer component compactness, high reliability and low maintenance demands compared to all conventionally insulating components (i.e. air, organic solid insulants, and mineral oils). Though SF6 insulation for HV applications was initially proposed during late '60s, it was spread worldwide rapidly due to offered significant economic advantages, and now SF6 GIS substations dominate the share in electrical networks in densely populated districts. However, it was in mid '90s when the first ecological concerns were brought about the SF6 gas use. These mainly stream out by either of the following facts: (i) SF6 is a strong green-house gas with a global warming potential of almost 25,000 greater than that of CO2 and its molecules exhibit an exceptionally high lifetime in earth atmosphere estimated to vary between 750 and 2500 years, and (ii) when electrically stressed (independent of temperature i.e. either high-power arcs developing at 20,000K during the switching actions, or corona discharges developing at 300K due to high electric field effects) toxic byproducts may be formed, some having high cyto-toxicities i.e. S2F10, oxyfluorides, H2S and HF.
