Cosmic neutrinos are expected to include a significant flux of tau neutrinos due to flavor mixing over astronomical length scales. However, the tau-neutrino content of astrophysical neutrinos is poorly constrained and a significant flux of cosmogenic tau neutrinos awaits discovery. Earth-skimming tau neutrinos undergo charged-current interactions that result in a tau lepton exiting the Earth. The tau lepton decay generates anextensive air shower and geomagnetic radio emission. To target the tau neutrinos, we present a new tau neutrino detector concept that uses phased antenna arrays placed on high elevation mountains. Simulation studies indicate that a modest array size and small number of stations can achieve competitive sensitivity, provided the receivers are at highs enough elevation.

The study of correlations between observations of fundamentally different nature from extreme cosmic sources promises extraordinary physical insights into the Universe. With the Pierre Auger Observatory, we can significantly contribute to multi-messenger astrophysics by searching for ultra-high energy particles, particularly neutrinos and photons which, being electrically neutral, point back to their origin. Using Pierre Auger Observatory data, stringent limits at EeV energies have been established on the photon and neutrino fluxes from a large fraction of the sky, probing the production mechanisms of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The good angular resolution and the neutrino identification capabilities of the Observatory at EeV energies allow the follow-up of events detected in gravitational waves, such as the binary mergers observed with the Advanced LIGO/Virgo detectors, or from other energetic sources of particles.

Traditionally, the depth of maximum shower development Xmax has been used as a surrogate observable for composition. Here we present the possibility of a new methodology to discriminate between light and heavy cosmic-ray primaries on an event-by-event basis. This method is based on comparisons between detected radio signals and Monte Carlo simulations, but instead of first reconstructing Xmax, we try to infer the cosmic-ray composition directly. We show that a large discrimination efficiency could in principle be reached for zenith angles above θ≃65°, even when some of the typical uncertainties in radio detection are taken into account.

The ANITA experiment consists on an aerostatic balloon flying over Antarctica and carrying a payload with antennas. Although ANITA was designed to detect the electric field of netrino-induced showers in the ice cap, it has also detected 16 radio pulses coming from extensive air showers, and the ANITA collaboration has used these data to produce the first cosmic ray flux measurement obtained by employing radio as a stand-alone technique. We review the experimental results and its interpretation. We also focus on the simulations and the method used for obtaining the cosmic ray flux.

We explore transition radiation at MHz-GHz frequencies as a possible way to detect ultrahigh-energy (UHE) particles. We have developed a general method to calculate transition radiation that extends the well-known Zas-Halzen-Stanev (ZHS) algorithm. We have applied it to the characterization of the frequency and angular properties of the electric field from high-energy showers crossing the boundary between two media. We discuss the potential of transition radiation for the detection of UHE particles in different situations of experimental interest.

The lunar technique is a method for maximising the collection area for ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic ray and neutrino searches. The method uses either ground-based radio telescopes or lunar orbiters to search for Askaryan emission from particles cascading near the lunar surface. While experiments using the technique have made important advances in the detection of nanosecond-scale pulses, only at the very highest energies has the lunar technique achieved competitive limits. This is expected to change with the advent of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the low-frequency component of which (SKA-low) is predicted to be able to detect an unprecedented number of UHE cosmic rays. In this contribution, the status of lunar particle detection is reviewed, with particular attention paid to outstanding theoretical questions, and the technical challenges of using a giant radio array to search for nanosecond pulses. The activities of SKA’s High Energy Cosmic Particles Focus Group are described, as is a roadmap by which this group plans to incorporate this detection mode into SKA-low observations. Estimates for the sensitivity of SKA-low phases 1 and 2 to UHE particles are given, along with the achievable science goals with each stage. Prospects for near-future observations with other instruments are also described.
