Abstract

In the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), protoplanetary disks exhibit ionized gas clouds in the form of a striking teardrop shape as massive stars irradiate the disk material. We present the first spatially and spectrally resolved observations of 12 such objects, known as proplyds, using integral field spectroscopy observations performed with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument in Narrow Field Mode (NFM) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We present the morphology of the proplyds in seven emission lines and measure the radius of the ionization front (I-front) of the targets in four tracers, covering transitions of different ionization states for the same element. We also derive stellar masses for the targets. The measurements follow a consistent trend of increasing I-front radius for a decreasing strength of the far-UV radiation as expected from photoevaporation models. By analyzing the ratios of the I-front radii as measured in the emission lines of Hα, [O I] 6300 A, [O II] 7330 A, and [O III] 5007 A, we observe the ionization stratification, that is, the most ionized part of the flow being the furthest from the disk (and closest to the UV source). The ratios of ionization front radii scale in the same way for all proplyds in our sample regardless of the incident radiation. We show that the stratification can help constrain the densities near the I-front by using a 1D photoionization model. We derive the upper limits of photoevaporative mass-loss rates (Ṁloss) by assuming ionization equilibrium, and estimate values in the range 1.07–94.5 × 10−7M⊙ yr−1, with Ṁloss values decreasing towards lower impinging radiation. We do not find a correlation between the mass-loss rate and stellar mass. The highest mass-loss rate is for the giant proplyd 244–440. These values of Ṁloss, combined with recent estimates of the disk mass with ALMA, confirm previous estimates of the short lifetime of these proplyds. This work demonstrates the potential of this MUSE dataset and offers a new set of observables to be used to test current and future models of external photoevaporation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Understanding the chemical link between protoplanetary disks and planetary atmospheres is complicated by the fact that the popular targets in the study of disks and planets are widely separated both in space and time. The 5 Myr PDS 70 systems offers a unique opportunity to directly compare the chemistry of a giant planet's atmosphere to the chemistry of its natal disk. To that end, we derive our current best physical and chemical model for the PDS 70 disk through forward modelling of the $^{12}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and C$_2$H emission radial profiles with the thermochemical code DALI and find a volatile C/O ratio above unity in the outer disk. Using what we know of the PDS 70 disk today, we analytically estimate the properties of the disk as it was 4 Myr in the past when we assume that the giant planets started their formation, and compute a chemical model of the disk at that time. We compute the formation of PDS 70b and PDS 70c using the standard core accretion paradigm and account for the accretion of volatile and refractory sources of carbon and oxygen to estimate the resulting atmospheric carbon-to-oxygen number ratio (C/O) for these planets. Our inferred C/O ratio of the gas in the PDS 70 disk indicates that it is marginally carbon rich relative to the stellar C/O = 0.44 which we derive from an empirical relation between stellar metallicity and C/O. Under the assumption that the disk has been carbon rich for most of its lifetime, we find that the planets acquire a super-stellar C/O in their atmospheres. If the carbon-rich disk is a relatively recent phenomenon (i.e. developed after the formation of the planets at $\sim 1$ Myr) then the planets should have close to the stellar C/O in their atmospheres. Abstract

International audience; The evolution of young stars and disks is driven by the interplay of several processes, notably the accretion and ejection of material. These processes, critical to correctly describe the conditions of planet formation, are best probed spectroscopically. Between 2020 and 2022, about 500orbits of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are being devoted in to the ULLYSES public survey of about 70 low-mass ( M ⋆ ≤ 2 M ⊙ ) young (age < 10 Myr) stars at UV wavelengths. Here, we present the PENELLOPE Large Program carried out with the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) with the aim of acquiring, contemporaneously to the HST, optical ESPRESSO/UVES high-resolution spectra for the purpose of investigating the kinematics of the emitting gas, along with UV-to-NIR X-shooter medium-resolution flux-calibrated spectra to provide the fundamental parameters that HST data alone cannot provide, such as extinction and stellar properties. The data obtained by PENELLOPE have no proprietary time and the fully reduced spectra are being made available to the whole community. Here, we describe the data and the first scientific analysis of the accretion properties for the sample of 13 targets located in the Orion OB1 association and in the σ -Orionis cluster, observed in November–December 2020. We find that the accretion rates are in line with those observed previously in similarly young star-forming regions, with a variability on a timescale of days (≲3). The comparison of the fits to the continuum excess emission obtained with a slab model on the X-shooter spectra and the HST/STIS spectra shows a shortcoming in the X-shooter estimates of ≲10%, which is well within the assumed uncertainty. Its origin can be either due to an erroneous UV extinction curve or to the simplicity of the modeling and, thus, this question will form the basis of the investigation undertaken over the course of the PENELLOPE program. The combined ULLYSES and PENELLOPE data will be key in attaining a better understanding of the accretion and ejection mechanisms in young stars.

Abstract

We present spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) images of 12CO J = 3−2 emission from the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star, HD 100546. We expand upon earlier analyses of this data and model the spatially-resolved kinematic structure of the CO emission. Assuming a velocity profile which prescribes a flat or flared emitting surface in Keplerian rotation, we uncover significant residuals with a peak of ≈7δv, where δv = 0.21 km s-1 is the width of a single spectral resolution element. The shape and extent of the residuals reveal the possible presence of a severely warped and twisted inner disk extending to at most 100 au. Adapting the model to include a misaligned inner gas disk with (i) an inclination almost edge-on to the line of sight, and (ii) a position angle almost orthogonal to that of the outer disk reduces the residuals to
