The systematic evaluations of spectrum averaged cross sections of dosimetric reactions over a broad range of energies were performed in 252Cf (spontaneous fission) and 235U(nth,f) neutron fields. The neutron sources used in this study were LR-0, VR-1 zero power research light water reactors, LVR-15 10 MW research light water reactor, and 252Cf neutron source with emission specified precisely by the manganese sulphate bath. All spectral averaged cross sections were inferred from measured reaction rates which were derived from gamma spectrometry. These gamma spectrometry measurements were performed using a single detector in all cases. The ratios of 252Cf and 235U spectral averaged cross sections can be used to specify the high energy tail of the 235U prompt fission neutron spectrum as the 252Cf spontaneous fission spectrum is considered as a standard. Furthermore, ratios are independent of cross section uncertainties since uncertainties in the cross sections are eliminated. Theoretical models of fission can be tested based on our measurements. The calculations were performed in MCNP6.2 transport code using different prompt fission neutron spectra and IRDFF-II cross sections for threshold reactions. The ratios are in good agreement using only ENDF/B-VIII.0 235U prompt fission neutron spectrum suggesting it to be harder than in other evaluations.

The leakage neutron spectrum measurements have been done on benchmark spherical assembly-nickel sphere with a diameter of 50 cm and a copper cube (block) with dimensions of 49.5 x 49.5 x 48 cm3 in Research Centre Rez (RC Rez). The 252Cf neutron source was placed into the centre of nickel sphere and copper cube. The proton recoil method was used for the neutron spectrum measurement using spherical hydrogen proportional detectors (HPD) with pressure of 400 and 1000 kPa (diameter of detectors is 4 cm) and scintillation stilbene (ST) detector (diam. of 1 x 1 cm). The neutron energy range of spectrometer is from 0.04 MeV to 1.3 MeV for HPD and from 1 MeV to 12 MeV for ST. The adequate MCNP neutron spectrum calculations based on data libraries ENDF/B-VII.1, ENDF/B-VIII.0, JEFF-3.3, BROND-3.1 were done and compared with the experiment, i.e., calculation to experiment ratio C/E was determined.

Physical quantities derived from integral experiments can usually be measured much more accurately than that from differential nuclear data. The accurate knowledge of integral parameters provide excellent grounds for testing and tuning differential data such as, for instance, cross sections. Measurement of neutron leakage spectra with 252Cf neutron source located at sphere center is often used for integral experiments. While this type of experiments provide information for cross section tuning, however, care must be taken to avoid misleading interpretation, namely, at high energies due to the very low portion of high energy neutrons in 252Cf spectrum. This issue can be alleviated by the use of point source with different spectra shape. For that purpose one suitable candidate seems to be the AmBe neutron source which has a relatively high average energy and peak character of emitted neutrons. Indeed, AmBe seems an interesting option because the calculated leakage neutron spectra are not very sensitive to the input shape of the neutron spectra. Thus the neutron leakage spectra calculated using tabulated of International Organization for Standardization spectra is nearly the same as stilbene measured AmBe spectra as an input.

The results of systematic evaluations of spectrum averaged cross section (SACS) measurements in the fission neutron fields of 252Cf and 235U are presented. The data form a complete database of high-threshold experimental SACS measured in the same installation under the same conditions and using the same high purity germanium gamma spectrometer. This is crucial to reduce the uncertainty of the ratio and the data scattering and therefore, to minimize discrepancies compared to cross section measured under different conditions in different laboratories. This new dataset complements and extends earlier experimental evaluations. The total emission of the 252Cf neutron source during the experiments varied from 9.5E8 to 4.5E8 neutrons per second. The emission was derived in accordance to the data in the Certificate of Calibration involving absolute flux measurements in a manganese sulphate bath. Concerning 235U fission neutron field, the irradiations were carried out in a specifically designed core assembled in the zero power light water LR-0 reactor. This special core has a well described neutron field. After the irradiation, the low volume irradiated samples to be measured by gamma spectrometry were placed directly on the upper cap of a coaxial high purity germanium (HPGe) detector in a vertical configuration (ORTEC GEM35P4). High volume samples were homogenized and strewn into the Marinelli beaker. The HPGe detector is surrounded by the lead shielding box with a thin inner copper cladding and covered with rubber for suppression of background signal and bremsstrahlung. The experimental reaction rates were derived for irradiated samples from the Net Peak Areas (NPA) measured using the semiconductor HPGe detector. The measured reaction rates are used to derive the spectrum-averaged cross sections. Furthermore, measured reaction rates are also compared with MCNP6 calculations using various nuclear data libraries, in particular IRDFF evaluations.

The cross section is a fundamental quantity which affects the accuracy of Monte Carlo simulations widely used in nuclear applications. A new dosimetry library IRDFF-II that contains cross section evaluations that include full uncertainty quantification is being developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency and expected to be released in January 2020; a preliminary version IRDFF-1.05 was released in 2014 and is being tested in this work. Validation of the cross-section evaluations proposed for this library is a high priority task. The validation can be realized using integral cross sections measured in standard and/or reference neutron benchmark fields. Integral quantities feature significantly lower uncertainties than differential nuclear data. If the neutron spectrum where the cross section is measured is well characterized, then the Spectrum Averaged Cross Section can be used for validating of existing evaluations.

We argue that energy and momentum deposition from hard partons into quark-gluon plasma induces an important contribution to the final state hadron anisotropies. We also advocate a novel method of Event Shape Sorting which allow to analyse the azimuthal anisotropies of the fireball dynamics in more detail. The presented paper aims to compare the calculated and experimental reaction rates of 23 Na(n,2n)22 Na in a well-defined reactor spectra and in the spontaneous fission spectrum of 252 Cf. The experimentally determined reaction rate, derived using gamma spectroscopy of irradiated NaF sample, is used for average cross section determination.Estimation of this cross-section is important as it is included in International Reactor Dosimetry and Fusion File and is also relevant to the correct estimation of long-term activity of Na coolant in Sodium Fast Reactors. The calculations were performed with the MCNP6 code using ENDF/B-VII.0, JEFF-3.1, JEFF-3.2, JENDL-3.3, JENDL-4, ROSFOND-2010, CENDL-3.1 and IRDFF nuclear data libraries. In the case of reactor spectrum, reasonable agreement was not achieved with any library. However, in the case of 252 Cf spectrum agreement was achieved with IRDFF, JEFF-3.1 and JENDL libraries.

Minijets and jets are produced in large numbers in nuclear collisions at TeV energies, so that there are many of them in a single fireball. They deposit non-negligible amount of momentum and energy into the hydrodynamically expanding bulk and cause anisotropies of the expansion. Moreover, due to their multiple production in a single event the resulting anisotropies are correlated with the collision geometry and thus contribute positively also to event-averaged anisotropies in non-central collisions. Using simulations with three-dimensional ideal hydrodynamic model we demonstrate the importance of this effect. The planned lifetime of the first commercial VVER-1000 units were designed for 30 to 35 years. Most of the early VVER plants are now reaching and/or passing the 35-year mark. Service life extension for another 10 to 30 years is now under investigation. Life extension requires the evaluation of pressure vessel internals degradation under long-term irradiation. One of the possible limiting factors for the service life of VVERs is a void swelling of the Russian type titanium stabilized stainless 08Ch18N10T steel used to construct the baffle surrounding the core. This article aims to show first steps towards deeper analysis of the baffle degradation process and to demonstrate the possibilities of precise calculation and measurements on the VVER-1000 mock-up in LR-0 reactor.

The pin power density is an important quantity which has to be monitored during the reactor operation, for two main reasons. Firstly, it is part of the limits and conditions of safe operation and, secondly, it is source term in neutron transport calculations used for the adequate assessing of the state of core structures and pressure vessel material. It is often calculated using deterministic codes which may have problems with an adequate definition of boundary conditions in subcritical regions. This may lead to overestimation of real situation, and therefore the validation of the utility codes contributes not only to better fuel utilization, but also to more precise description of radiation situation in structural components of core. Current paper presents methods developed at LR-0 reactor, as well as selected results for pin power density measurement in peripheral regions of VVER-1000 mock-up. The presented data show that the results of a utility diffusion code at core boundary overestimate the measurement. This situation, however satisfactory safe, may lead to unduly conservative approach in the determination of radiation damage of core structures.
