Search

Over recent years there has been mounting evidence that accreting supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and stellar mass black holes have similar observational signatures: thermal emission from the accretion disk, X-ray corona, and relativisitic jets. Further, there have been investigations into whether or not AGN have spectral states similar to that of X-ray binaries (XRBs) and what parallels can be drawn between the two using a hardness-intensity diagram (HID). To address whether AGN jets might be related to accretion states as in XRBs, we explore whether populations of radio-AGN classified according to their radio jet morphology (Fanaroff-Riley classes I and II; FR I and II), excitation class (HERG and LERG), and radio jet linear extent (compact to giant) occupy different and distinct regions of the AGN hardness-intensity diagram (total luminosity vs. hardness). We do this by cross correlating 15 catalogs of radio galaxies with the desired characteristics from the literature with XMM Newton and Swift X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) source catalogs. We calculate the luminosity and hardness from the X-ray and UV photometry, place the sources on the AGN hardness-intensity diagram, and search for separation of populations and analogies with the XRB spectral state HID. We find that (a) FR Is and IIs, (b) HERGs and LERGs, (c) FR I-LERGs and FR II-HERGs occupy distinct areas of the HID at a statistically significant level (p-value < 0.05) and no clear evidence for population distinction between the different radio jet linear extents. The separation between FR I-LERG and FR II-HERG populations is the strongest in this work. Our results indicate that radio-loud AGN occupy distinct areas of the HID depending on the morphology and excitation class, showing strong similarities to XRBs., 24 pages with 10 figures. arXiv:2007.07260v1, [Context]: We present a ~130 ks observation of the prototypical wind-accreting, high-mass X-ray binary Vela X-1 collected with XMM-Newton at orbital phases between 0.12 and 0.28. A strong flare took place during the observation that allows us to investigate the reaction of the clumpy stellar wind to the increased X-ray irradiation., [Aims]: To examine the wind’s reaction to the flare, we performed both time-averaged and time-resolved analyses of the RGS spectrum and examined potential spectral changes., [Methods]: We focused on the high-resolution XMM-Newton RGS spectra and divided the observation into pre-flare, flare, and post-flare phases. We modeled the time-averaged and time-resolved spectra with phenomenological components and with the self-consistent photoionization models calculated via CLOUDY and XSTAR in the pre-flare phase, where strong emission lines due to resonant transitions of highly ionized ions are seen., [Results]: In the spectra, we find emission lines corresponding to K-shell transitions in highly charged ions of oxygen, neon, magnesium, and silicon as well as radiative recombination continua (RRC) of oxygen. Additionally, we observe potential absorption lines of magnesium at a lower ionization stage and features identified as iron L lines. The CLOUDY and XSTAR photoionization models provide contradictory results, either pointing towards uncertainties in theory or possibly a more complex multi-phase plasma, or both., [Conclusions]: We are able to demonstrate the existence of a plethora of variable narrow features, including the firm detection of oxygen lines and RRC that RGS enables to observe in this source for the first time. Context. Seyfert 1.8/1.9 are sources showing weak broad H components in their optical spectra. According to unification schemes, they are seen with an edge-on inclination, similar to type 2 Seyfert galaxies, but with slightly lower inclination angles. Aims. We aim to test whether Seyfert 1.8/1.9 have similar properties at UV and X-ray wavelengths. Methods. We used the 15 Seyfert 1.8/1.9 in the Véron Cetty and Véron catalog with public data available from the Chandra and/or XMM-Newton archives at different dates, with timescales between observations ranging from days to years. All the spectra of the same source were simultaneously fit with the same model and different parameters were left free to vary in order to select the variable parameter(s). Whenever possible, short-term variations from the analysis of the X-ray light curves and long-term UV variations from the optical monitor onboard XMM-Newton were studied. Our results are homogeneously compared with a previous work using the same methodology applied to a sample of Seyfert 2. Results. X-ray variability is found in all 15 nuclei over the aforementioned ranges of timescales. The main variability pattern is related to intrinsic changes in the sources, which are observed in ten nuclei. Changes in the column density are also frequent, as they are observed in six nuclei, and variations at soft energies, possibly related to scattered nuclear emission, are detected in six sources. X-ray intra-day variations are detected in six out of the eight studied sources. Variations at UV frequencies are detected in seven out of nine sources. Conclusions. A comparison between the samples of Seyfert 1.8/1.9 and 2 shows that, even if the main variability pattern is due to intrinsic changes of the sources in the two families, these nuclei exhibit different variability properties in the UV and X-ray domains. In particular, variations in the broad X-ray band on short timescales (days to weeks), and variations in the soft X-rays and UV on long timescales (months to years) are detected in Seyfert 1.8/1.9 but not in Seyfert 2. Overall, we suggest that optically classified Seyfert 1.8/1.9 should be kept separated from Seyfert 2 galaxies in UV/X-ray studies of the obscured AGN population because their intrinsic properties might be different. © ESO, 2017., We acknowledge the AGN group at the IAA for helpful comments during this work. Context. By studying the optical brightness surface density of the globular cluster NGC 6388, it has been recently proposed that it harbors a central intermediate-mass black hole with mass ≃5.7 x 10 3 M ⊙ . Aims. We expect that the compact object in the center of NGC 6388 emits radiation in the X-ray band as a consequence of the accretion from the surrounding matter. We searched for XMM-Newton and Chandra observations towards NGC 6388 to test this hypothesis. Methods. We determine both the hardness ratios and luminosity with a minimum set of assumptions for each of the identified field sources. Results. The Chandra satellite disentangles several point-like X-ray sources, probably low mass X-ray binaries, well within the core radius of the globular cluster. However, three of them, coinciding with the cluster center of gravity, remain unresolved. Their total luminosity is L Obs X ≃ 2.7 x 10 33 erg s -1 . If one of these sources is the X-ray counterpart of the intermediate-mass black hole in NGC 6388, the corresponding upper limit on the accretion efficiency, with respect to the Eddington luminosity, is 3 x 10 -9 . This measurement could be tightened if moderately deep radio observations of the field were performed.

Low-mass X-ray binaries are binary systems composed of a compact object and a low-mass star. Recently, a new class of these systems, known as symbiotic $X$-ray binaries (with a neutron star with a M-type giant companion), has been discovered. Here, we present long-duration ${\it XMM}$ observations of the source 1RXS J180431.1-273932. Temporal and spectral analysis of the source was performed along with a search for an optical counterpart. We used a Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis for the period search and evaluated the confidence level using Monte-Carlo simulations. The source is characterized by regular pulses so that it is most likely a neutron star. A modulation of $494.1\pm0.2$ s (3$\sigma$ error) was found with a confidence level of $>$99%. Evidence of variability is also present, since the data show a rate of change in the signal of $\sim -7.7\times 10^{-4}$ counts s$^{-1}$ hr$^{-1}$. A longer observation will be necessary in order to determine if the source shows any periodic behavior. The spectrum can be described by a power law with photon index $\Gamma\sim 1$ and a Gaussian line at 6.6 keV. The X-ray flux in the 0.2--10 keV energy band is $5.4\times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. The identification of an optical counterpart (possibly an M6III red-giant star with an apparent visual magnitude of $\simeq 17.6$) allows a conservative distance of $\sim 10$ kpc to be estimated. IGR J16318-4848 is the prototype and one of the more extreme examples of the new class of highly obscured Galactic X-ray sources discovered by INTEGRAL. A monitoring campaign on this source has been carried out by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL, consisting in three simultaneous observations performed in February, March and August 2004. The long-term variability of the Compton-thick absorption and emission line complexes will be used to probe the properties of the circumstellar matter. A detailed timing and spectral analysis of the three observations is performed, along with the reanalysis of the XMM-Newton observation performed in February 2003. The results are compared with predictions from numerical radiative transfer simulations to derive the parameters of the circumstellar matter. Despite the large flux dynamic range observed (almost a factor 3 between observations performed a few months apart), the source remained bright (suggesting it is a persistent source) and Compton-thick (NH >1.2x10^24 cm-2). Large Equivalent Width (EW) emission lines from Fe Kalpha, Fe Kbeta and Ni Kalpha were present in all spectra. The addition of a Fe Kalpha Compton Shoulder improves the fits, especially in the 2004 observations. Sporadic occurrences of rapid X-ray flux risings were observed in three of the four observations. The Fe Kalpha light curve followed the continuum almost instantaneously, suggesting that the emission lines are produced by illumination of small-scale optically-thick matter around the high-energy continuum source. Using the iron line EW and Compton Shoulder as diagnostic of the geometry of the matter, we suggest that the obscuring matter is in a flattened configuration seen almost edge-on., accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present analysis of the optical and X-ray spectra of the low Galactic latitude bright (F(2-10) = 3.6 10^{-11} erg/cm2/s) source 4U 1344-60. On the basis of the optical data we propose to classify 4U 1344-60 as an intermediate type Seyfert galaxy and we measure a value of z=0.012+/-0.001 for its redshift. From the XMM-Newton observation we find that the overall X-ray spectral shape of 4U 1344-60 is complex and can be described by a power-law continuum (Gamma ~ 1.55) obscured by two neutral absorption components (Nh(f) ~ 10^{22} cm^{-2} and Nh(p) ~ 4 10^{22} cm^{-2}), the latter covering only the ~50% of the primary X-ray source. The X-ray data therefore lend support to our classification of 4U 1344-60. It exhibits a broad and skewed Fe Kalpha line at 6.4 keV, which suggests the existence of an accretion disk that is able to reprocess the primary continuum down to a few gravitational radii. Such a line represents one of the clearest examples of a relativistic line observed by XMM-Newton so far. We observed with XMM-Newton 4 objects selected from the Grossan catalog, with the aim to search for new 'changing-look' AGN. The sample includes all the sources which showed in subsequent observations a flux much lower than the one measured with HEAO A-1: NGC 7674, NGC 4968, IRAS 13218+0552 and NGC 1667. None of the sources was caught in a high flux state during the XMM-Newton observations, whose analysis reveal they are all likely Compton-thick objects. We suggest that, for all the sources, potential problems with the HEAO A-1 source identification and flux measurement prevent us from being certain that the HEAO A-1 data represent a putative 'high' state for these objects. Nonetheless, based on the high flux state and Compton-thin spectrum of its GINGA observation, NGC 7674 represents probably the sixth known case of a 'changing-look' Seyfert 2 galaxy. From the X-ray variability pattern, we can estimate a likely lower limit of a few parsec to the distance of the inner walls of the torus in this object. Remarkably, IRAS 13218+0552 was not detected by XMM-Newton, despite being currently classified as a Seyfert 1 with a large [OIII] flux. However, the original classification was likely to be affected by an extreme velocity outflow component in the emission lines. We present the analysis of XMM-Newton observations of three X-ray weak quasars: PG 1001+054, PG 1535+547 and PG 2112+059. All objects are absorbed by ionized material showing high column densities, NH = 2.9 × 10 22 cm −2 to NH = 1.9 × 10 23 cm −2 , and ionization parameters, ξ = 147 erg cm s −1 to ξ = 542 erg cm s −1 . The spectra of PG 1535+547 require an additional partial covering by neutral material with a column density of NH ≈ 9 × 10 22 cm −2 at a covering factor of ≈0.96. The spectra of PG 1535+547 show systematic residuals in the energy range from ∼ 4k eV to∼6 keV, which are inconsistent with Kα-fluorescence-emission of neutral or ionized iron under the assumption of a Gaussian line profile. They can be described with a relativistic disk line (Laor) and establish therefore the second X-ray weak quasar with such a spectral characteristic. Our results together with the findings of Brinkmann et al. (2004, A&A, 414, 107) and Piconcelli et al. (2004a, MNRAS, 351, 161), indicate that warm absorbers characterized by high column densities and ionization parameters are typical of X-ray weak quasars. The occurrence of a variable relativistic broad Fe Kα fluorescence line in two out of the five well studied X-ray weak quasars might indicate a second general characteristic of the entire object class. We present a 30 ks XMM-Newton observation of the z = 2.35 Type II radio quiet quasar RX J1343.4+0001. These data provide the first good quality X-ray spectrum for this object. We measured a continuum slope Gamma = 1.85+/-0.10 with only an upper limit on the column density of the absorbing material of Nh(z), Comment: Accepted by A&A

We present results of a systematic analysis of the XMM-Newton spectra of 40 quasars (QSOs) (z = 1.89+/-0.11 and = 1.63^(+0.02)_(-0.01) for the RQQs and RLQs, respectively. Below 2 keV, a strong, broad excess is present in most QSO spectra. This feature has been fitted with four different models assuming several physical scenarios. All tested models (blackbody, multicolor blackbody, bremsstrahlung and power law) satisfactorily fitted the majority of the spectra. However, none of them is able to provide an adequate parameterization for the soft excess emission in all QSOs, indicating the absence of an universal shape for this spectral feature. An additional cold absorption component was required only in three sources. On the other hand, as recently pointed out by Porquet et al. (2004) for a smaller sample of PG QSOs, warm absorber features are present in ~50% of the QSO spectra in contrast with their rare occurrence (~5-10%) found in previous studies. The XMM-Newton view of optically-selected bright QSOs therefore suggests that there are no significant difference in the X-ray spectral properties once compared with the low-luminosity Seyfert 1 galaxies. We report the XMM-Newton discovery of the first Compton-thick obscured AGN in a Broad Line Radio Galaxy, the Gigahertz Peaked-Spectrum source Mkn668 (OQ+208). The remarkably flat 2-10 keV X-ray spectrum (observed photon index, \Gamma ~ 0.7), alongside with a prominent iron K-alpha fluorescent emission line, is a clear signature of a Compton-reflection dominated spectrum. Mkn688 represents a remarkable example of discrepancy between X-ray spectral properties and optical classification, as its optical spectrum is characterized by broad and asymmetric Balmer lines. The obscuring matter is constrained to be located within the radio hotspots, in turn separated by about 10 pc. If the jets are piercing their way through a Compton-thick medium pervading the nuclear environment, one could be largely underestimating the radio activity dynamical age determined from the observed hotspot recession velocity. The soft X-ray spectrum is dominated by a much steeper component, which may be due to nuclear continuum electron scattering, or inverse Compton of the - remarkably large - far infrared emission. Soft X-rays are suppressed by a further Compton-thin (N_H ~ 10^21/cm/cm) absorbing system, that we identify with matter responsible for free-free absorption of the radio lobes.

We present a detailed discussion of the spectral and spatial components of NGC 5506, based on XMM-Newton, Chandra and BeppoSAX observations. The overall picture consists of a nucleus absorbed by cold gas with column density of $\approx10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and surrounded by a Compton-thick torus, whose existence is inferred by a cold reflection component and an iron K$\alpha$ line. On a much larger scale, a photoionized gas extended on $\approx350$ pc reprocesses the nuclear radiation, producing a soft excess and ionized iron lines. Noteworthy, we find no evidence for the presence of the accretion disc., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present and discuss Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy and Compton-thick absorbed source, Tololo~0109-383. The hard X-ray emission (i.e. above $\sim$2 keV), is dominated by a spatially unresolved reflection component, as already discovered by previous ASCA and BeppoSAX observ ations. The soft X-ray emission is partly ($\sim$15%) extended over about 1 kpc. Below 2 keV, the spectrum is very steep and two emission lines, probably due to recombination to He-like ions of oxygen and neon, are clearly present. Combining X-rays and optical information taken from the literature, we propose an overall scenario for the nuclear regions of this source., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, A&A 399, 519

The bright Narrow Emission Line Galaxy, NGC 5506, has been observed simultaneously by XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX. The iron line is complex, with at least two components: one narrow and corresponding to neutral iron, the second one broad and corresponding to ionized iron. The latter line is equally well fitted by a truly broad line or by a blend of He- and H-like narrow lines. The bulk of the Compton reflection continuum originates in neutral matter, and is therefore associated with the narrow line: they are most likely emitted in distant matter. The origin of the ionized line(s) is less certain, but the solution in terms of a blend of narrow lines from photoionized matter seems to be preferable to emission from an ionized, relativistic accretion disc., accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We describe an XMM-Newton observation of the PKS0312-770 field, which facilitates the spectral analysis of serendipitous sources previously detected by CHANDRA. The combination of larger effective area and longer exposure duration allows a significant increase in detected photons, and a lower limit in source detection sensitivity. In particular the hard X-ray normal galaxy unveiled by Fiore et al (2000) is most likely explained as a moderately absorbed (N_H ~ 1e22 cm^-2) AGN. We detect 52 sources (45 previously unreported) at a limiting flux of ~2e-15 cgs in the 0.5-2keV band. The LogN-LogS curve is consistent with that derived from by XMM-Newton observations of the Lockman Hole field. The flux determinations allow to check for any inconsistency between the calibrations of the two observatories, which is discussed., 6 pages, 6 figures

We report an X-ray observation of the Fairall 9 Seyfert 1 galaxy performed in July 2000 with the EPIC cameras and Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) on board the XMM-Newton observatory. Above 2 keV, the high signal to noise ratio of the EPIC spectra shows an emission line at 6:38 0:03 keV with a measured equivalent width of 120 eV. An absorption edge is also detected at 7:64 +0:21 0:36 in the source rest frame that has not been reported before. Spectral tting of the measured spectra with reflection models indicates that these imprinted features are likely the result of partial reprocessing of a primary X-ray continuum by optically thick material. The positions in energy of the emission line and absorption edge are consistent with Compton reflection models from material containing iron in states of ionization lower than FeXVII. The Fe K emission line is narrow suggesting that the reflection process arises from material relatively far from a putative central black hole. The best t models show that the reflected spectrum mask a steeper intrinsic power law slope even at energies lower than 5 keV. The extrapolation of this primary continuum to energies lower than 2 keV reveals the presence of a soft excess component contributing to 14 6% of the overall flux in the 0.3 1.0 keV energy range. No evidence is found for a warm absorber in this low energy part of the spectrum. The analysis results are discussed within the frame of recent accretion disc models in which X-rays from the primary continuum source heat up the upper layers of the disc thus creating very hot, optically thin plasmas on top of cooler denser material.

The XMM-Newton Observatory is a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency's Horizon 2000 programme, and is the largest scientific satellite it has launched to date. This paper summarises the principal characteristics of the Observatory which are pertinent to scientific operations. The scientific results appearing in this issue have been enabled by the unprecedentedly large effective area of the three mirror modules, which are briefly described. The in-orbit performance and preliminary calibrations of the observatory are briefly summarised. The observations from the XMM-Newton calibration and performance verification phase, which are public and from which most papers in this issue have been derived, are listed. The flow of data from the spacecraft, through the ground segment, to the production of preliminary science products supplied to users is also discussed.

The BeppoSAX observations of the bright Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564 are presented along with a high quality optical spectrum taken at the 1.5m telescope at La Silla. The 0.1-10 keV X-ray spectrum is characterized by a strong soft component which is best described by blackbody-like emission with a temperature of about 160 eV. At higher energies a steep (Gamma = 2.4) power-law tail is present. There is evidence of an ionized reflector in the form of an iron line and edge. We do not find significant evidence of soft X-ray features if the spectrum is modelled with a two component continuum. The optical and X-ray spectral properties support the hypothesis of a high accretion rate onto a low mass black hole., 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present 3 methods for the subtraction of non-cosmic and unresolved cosmic backgrounds observed by the Low-Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (LECS) on-board BeppoSAX. Removal of these backgrounds allows a more accurate modeling of the spectral data from point and small-scale extended sources. At high (> ) galactic latitudes, subtraction using a standard background spectrum works well. At low galactic latitudes, or in complex regions of the X-ray sky, two alternative methods are presented. The first uses counts obtained from two semi-annuli near the outside of the LECS field of view to estimate the background at the source location. The second method uses ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) all-sky survey data to estimate the LECS background spectrum for a given pointing position. A comparison of the results from these methods provides an estimate of the systematic uncertainties. For high galactic latitude fields, all 3 methods give 3σ confidence uncertainties of (0.1-10 keV), or (0.1-2 keV). These correspond to 0.1-2.0 keV fluxes of 0.7-1.8 and erg cm-2 s-1 for a power-law spectrum with a photon index of 2 and photoelectric absorption of and atom cm-2 , respectively. At low galactic latitudes, or in complex regions of the X-ray sky, the uncertainties are a factor ~2.5 higher.

Context. Pile-up in X-ray charged couple device (CCD) detectors is defined as the reconstruction of independent events in the same detection cell as a single event during a read-out cycle. Pile-up can seriously compromise the spectral performance, modifying both the flux and the spectral shape of celestial sources. Aims. In this paper we define rigorous metrics to characterise the effect of pile-up in terms of flux loss and spectral distortion. Methods. We extend analytical formulae derived for pile-up on CCD detectors with the inclusion of the calibrated energy-dependence of the point spread function. We validated our analytical results through both Monte-Carlo simulations of the EPIC cameras on-board XMM-Newton and comparison with pile-up diagnostics in observed data. Results. We estimate new count rate levels corresponding to a given degree of flux loss and spectral distortion for each EPIC imaging acquisition mode and provide guidance to observers wishing to estimate these values in their own observations. Conclusions. We strongly recommend using these thresholds in planning future observations with the EPIC cameras.

We aim to examine the relative cross-calibration accuracy of the on-axis effective areas of the XMM-Newton EPIC pn and MOS instruments. Spectra from a sample of 46 bright, high-count, non-piled-up isolated on-axis point sources are stacked together, and model residuals are examined to characterize the EPIC MOS-to-pn inter-calibration. The MOS1-to-pn and MOS2-to-pn results are broadly very similar. The cameras show the closest agreement below 1 keV, with MOS excesses over pn of 0-2% (MOS1/pn) and 0-3% (MOS2/pn). Above 3 keV, the MOS/pn ratio is consistent with energy-independent (or only mildly increasing) excesses of 7-8% (MOS1/pn) and 5-8% (MOS2/pn). In addition, between 1-2 keV there is a `silicon bump' - an enhancement at a level of 2-4% (MOS1/pn) and 3-5% (MOS2/pn). Tests suggest that the methods employed here are stable and robust. The results presented here provide the most accurate cross-calibration of the effective areas of the XMM-Newton EPIC pn and MOS instruments to date. We present results from a ~55 ks long XMM-Newton observation of the obscured AGN, NGC 5643, performed in July 2009. A previous, shorter (about 10 ks) XMM-Newton observation in February 2003 had left two major issues open, the nature of the hard X-ray emission (Compton-thin vs Compton-thick) and of the soft X-ray excess (photoionized vs collisionally ionized matter). The new observation shows that the source is Compton-thick and that the dominant contribution to the soft X-ray emission is by photoionized matter (even if it is still unclear whether collisionally ionized matter may contribute as well). We also studied three bright X-ray sources that are in the field of NGC 5643. The ULX NGC 5643 X-1 was confirmed to be very luminous, even if more than a factor 2 fainter than in 2003. We then provided the first high quality spectrum of the cluster of galaxies Abell 3602. The last source, CXOJ143244.5-442020, is likely an unobscured AGN, possibly belonging to Abell 3602., 6 pages. X-ray reflection off the accretion disc surrounding a black hole, together with the associated broad iron K$\alpha$ line, has been widely used to constrain the innermost accretion-flow geometry and black hole spin. Some recent measurements have revealed steep reflection emissivity profiles in a number of active galactic nuclei and X-ray binaries. We explore the physically motivated conditions that give rise to the observed steep disc-reflection emissivity profiles. We perform a set of simulations based on the configuration of a possible future high-resolution X-ray mission. Computations are carried out for typical X-ray bright Seyfert-1 galaxies. We find that steep emissivity profiles with $q\sim 4-5$ (where the emissivity is $\epsilon (r) \propto r^{-q}$) are produced considering either i) a lamp-post scenario where a primary compact X-ray source is located close to the black hole, or ii) the radial dependence of the disc ionisation state. We also highlight the role of the reflection angular emissivity: the radial emissivity index $q$ is overestimated when the standard limb-darkening law is used to describe the data. Very steep emissivity profiles with $q \geq 7$ are naturally obtained by applying reflection models that take into account radial profile $\xi (r)$ of the disc ionisation induced by a compact X-ray source located close to the central black hole., Comment: 10 pages, 17 figures, accepted to A\&A

Reliable timing calibration is essential for the accurate comparison of XMM-Newton light curves with those from other observatories, to ultimately use them to derive precise physical quantities. The XMM-Newton timing calibration is based on pulsar analysis. However, as pulsars show both timing noise and glitches, it is essential to monitor these calibration sources regularly. To this end, the XMM-Newton observatory performs observations twice a year of the Crab pulsar to monitor the absolute timing accuracy of the EPIC-pn camera in the fast Timing and Burst modes. We present the results of this monitoring campaign, comparing XMM-Newton data from the Crab pulsar (PSR B0531+21) with radio measurements. In addition, we use five pulsars (PSR J0537-69, PSR B0540-69, PSR B0833-45, PSR B1509-58 and PSR B1055-52) with periods ranging from 16 ms to 197 ms to verify the relative timing accuracy. We analysed 38 XMM-Newton observations (0.2-12.0 keV) of the Crab taken over the first ten years of the mission and 13 observations from the five complementary pulsars. All the data were processed with the SAS, the XMM-Newton Scientific Analysis Software, version 9.0. Epoch folding techniques coupled with \chi^{2} tests were used to derive relative timing accuracies. The absolute timing accuracy was determined using the Crab data and comparing the time shift between the main X-ray and radio peaks in the phase folded light curves. The relative timing accuracy of XMM-Newton is found to be better than 10^{-8}. The strongest X-ray pulse peak precedes the corresponding radio peak by 306\pm9 \mus, which is in agreement with other high energy observatories such as Chandra, INTEGRAL and RXTE. Spectroscopy of X-ray emission lines emitted in accretion discs around supermassive black holes is one of the most powerful probes of the accretion flow physics and geometry, while also providing in principle observational constraints on the black hole spin.[...] We aim at determining the ultimate physical driver of the strength of this relativistic reprocessing feature. We first extend the hard X-ray flux-limited sample of Seyfert galaxies studied so far (FERO, de la Calle Perez et al. 2010) to obscured objects up to a column density N_H=6x10^23 atoms/cm/cm. We verify that none of the line properties depends on the AGN optical classification, as expected from the Seyfert unification scenarios. There is also no correlation between the accretion disc inclination, as derived from formal fits of the line profiles, and the optical type or host galaxy aspect angle, suggesting that the innermost regions of the accretion disc and the host galaxy plane are not aligned. [...]. Data are not sensitive enough to the detailed ionisation state of the line-emitting disc. However, the lack of dependency of the line EW on either the luminosity or the rest-frame centroid energy rules out that disc ionisation plays an important role on the EW dynamical range in Seyferts. The dynamical range of the relativistically broadened K-alpha iron line EW in nearby Seyferts appears to be mainly determined by the properties of the innermost accretion flow. We discuss several mechanisms (disc ionisation, disc truncation, aberration due to a mildly relativistic outflowing corona) which can explain this. [...] Observational data are still not in contradiction with scenarios invoking different mechanisms for the spectral complexity around the iron line, most notably the "partial covering" absorption scenario. Accretion models predict that fluorescence lines broadened by relativistic effects should arise from reflection of X-ray emission onto the inner region of the accretion disc surrounding the central black hole of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The theory behind the origin of relativistic lines is well established, and observational evidence from a moderate number of sources seems to support the existence of these lines. The aim of this work is to establish the fraction of AGN with relativistic Fe Kalpha lines, and study possible correlations with source physical properties. An XMM-Newton collection of 149 radio-quiet Type 1 AGN has been systematically and uniformly analyzed in order to search for significant evidence of a relativistically broadened Fe Kalpha line. To enable statistical studies, an almost complete, flux-limited subsample of 31 sources has been defined. The 2-10 keV spectra of the FERO sources have been compared with a complex model including most of the physical components observed in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert galaxies: a power law primary continuum modified by non-relativistic Compton reflection and warm absorption, plus a series of narrow Fe line reflection features. The observed fraction of sources in the flux-limited sample that show significant evidence of a relativistic Fe Kalpha line is 36%. The average line Equivalent Width (EW) is of the order of 100 eV, while the average disc inclination angle is 28+/-5 deg and the average power-law index of the radial disc emissivity law is 2.4+/-0.4. The spin value is well constrained only in 2 cases (MCG-6-30-15 and MRK509), and in the rest of the cases, whenever a constraint can be placed, it always implies the rejection of the static black hole solution. The Fe Kalpha line EW does not correlate with disc parameters or with system physical properties, such as black hole mass, accretion rate and hard X-ray luminosity., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures.
