- Abstract
We present optical and near-infrared observations of two Type Ibn supernovae (SNe), SN 2018jmt and SN 2019cj. Their light curves have rise times of about ten days, reaching an absolute peak magnitude of M
g (SN 2018jmt) = −19.07 ± 0.37 and MV (SN 2019cj) = −18.94 ± 0.19 mag, respectively. The early-time spectra of SN 2018jmt are dominated by a blue continuum, accompanied by narrow (600−1000 km s−1 ) He I lines with the P-Cygni profile. At later epochs, the spectra become more similar to those of the prototypical SN Ibn 2006jc. At early phases, the spectra of SN 2019cj show flash ionisation emission lines of C III, N III, and He II superposed on a blue continuum. These features disappear after a few days, and then the spectra of SN 2019cj evolve similarly to those of SN 2018jmt. The spectra indicate that the two SNe exploded within a He-rich circumstellar medium (CSM) lost by the progenitors a short time before the explosion. We modelled the light curves of the two SNe Ibn to constrain the progenitor and the explosion parameters. The ejecta masses are consistent with either what is expected for a canonical SN Ib (∼2 M⊙ ) or for a massive Wolf Rayet star (> ∼4 M⊙ ), with the kinetic energy on the order of 1051 erg. The lower limit on the ejecta mass (> ∼2 M⊙ ) argues against a scenario involving a relatively low-mass progenitor (e.g. MZAMS ∼ 10 M⊙ ). We set a conservative upper limit of ∼0.1 M⊙ for the56 Ni masses in both SNe. From the light curve modelling, we determined a two-zone CSM distribution, with an inner, flat CSM component and an outer CSM with a steeper density profile. The physical properties of SN 2018jmt and SN 2019cj are consistent with those expected from the core collapse of relatively massive envelope-stripped stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

We present the results of our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up of the intermediate-luminosity optical transient AT 2017jfs. At peak, the object reaches an absolute magnitude of Mg = −15.46 ± 0.15 mag and a bolometric luminosity of 5.5 × 1041 erg s−1. Its light curve has the double-peak shape typical of luminous red novae (LRNe), with a narrow first peak bright in the blue bands, while the second peak is longer-lasting and more luminous in the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands. During the first peak, the spectrum shows a blue continuum with narrow emission lines of H and Fe II. During the second peak, the spectrum becomes cooler, resembling that of a K-type star, and the emission lines are replaced by a forest of narrow lines in absorption. About 5 months later, while the optical light curves are characterized by a fast linear decline, the NIR ones show a moderate rebrightening, observed until the transient disappears in solar conjunction. At these late epochs, the spectrum becomes reminiscent of that of M-type stars, with prominent molecular absorption bands. The late-time properties suggest the formation of some dust in the expanding common envelope or an IR echo from foreground pre-existing dust. We propose that the object is a common-envelope transient, possibly the outcome of a merging event in a massive binary, similar to NGC 4490−2011OT1.

supernovae: general ,supernovae: individual (PTF12os, SN 2012P, iPTF13bvn, PTF11eon, SN 2011dh) ,galaxies: individual (NGC 5806) ,techniques: image processing - Abstract
$\textit{Context.}$ We investigate two stripped-envelope supernovae (SNe) discovered in the nearby galaxy NGC 5806 by the (intermediate) Palomar Transient Factory [(i)PTF]. These SNe, designated PTF12os/SN 2012P and iPTF13bvn, exploded within ~ 520 days of one another at a similar distance from the host-galaxy center. We classify PTF12os as a Type IIb SN based on our spectral sequence; iPTF13bvn has previously been classified as Type Ib having a likely progenitor with zero age main sequence (ZAMS) mass below ~ 17 M$_\odot$ . Because of the shared and nearby host, we are presented with a unique opportunity to compare these two SNe. $\textit{Aims.}$ Our main objective is to constrain the explosion parameters of iPTF12os and iPTF13bvn, and to put constraints on the SN progenitors. We also aim to spatially map the metallicity in the host galaxy, and to investigate the presence of hydrogen in early-time spectra of both SNe. $\textit{Methods.}$ We present comprehensive datasets collected on PTF12os and iPTF13bvn, and introduce a new automatic reference-subtraction photometry pipeline (FPipe) currently in use by the iPTF. We perform a detailed study of the light curves (LCs) and spectral evolution of the SNe. The bolometric LCs are modeled using the hydrodynamical code $\Tiny{HYDE}$. We analyze early spectra of both SNe to investigate the presence of hydrogen; for iPTF13bvn we also investigate the regions of the Paschen lines in infrared spectra. We perform spectral line analysis of helium and iron lines to map the ejecta structure of both SNe. We use nebular models and late-time spectroscopy to constrain the ZAMS mass of the progenitors. We also perform image registration of ground-based images of PTF12os to archival $\small{HST}$ images of NGC 5806 to identify a potential progenitor candidate. $\textit{Results.}$ We find that our nebular spectroscopy of iPTF13bvn remains consistent with a low-mass progenitor, likely having a ZAMS mass of ~ 12 M$_\odot$ . Our late-time spectroscopy of PTF12os is consistent with a ZAMS mass of ~ 15 M$_\odot$. We successfully identify a source in pre-explosion $\small{HST}$ images coincident with PTF12os. The colors and absolute magnitude of this object are consistent between pre-explosion and late-time $\small{HST}$ images, implying it is a cluster of massive stars. Our hydrodynamical modeling suggests that the progenitor of PTF12os had a compact He core with a mass of 3.25$^{+0.77}_{−0.56}$ M$_\odot$ at the time of the explosion, which had a total kinetic energy of 0.54$^{+0.41}_{−0.25}$ × 10$^{51}$ erg and synthesized 0.063$^{+0.020}_{−0.011}$ M$_\odot$ of strongly mixed $^{56}$Ni. Spectral comparisons to the Type IIb SN 2011dh indicate that the progenitor of PTF12os was surrounded by a thin hydrogen envelope with a mass lower than 0.02 M$_\odot$. We also find tentative evidence that the progenitor of iPTF13bvn could have been surrounded by a small amount of hydrogen prior to the explosion. This result is supported by possible weak signals of hydrogen in both optical and infrared spectra.

We present our findings based on pre- and post-explosion data of the type II-Plateau SN 2018aoq that exploded in NGC 4151. As distance estimates to NGC 4151 vary by an order of magnitude, we utilised the well-known correlation between ejecta velocity and plateau brightness, i.e. the standard candle method, to obtain a distance of 18.2 ± 1.2 Mpc, which is in very good agreement with measurements based on geometric methods. The above distance implies a mid-plateau absolute magnitude of M
V 50 = − 15.76 ± 0.14 M V 50 = − 15.76 ± 0.14 $ M_{V}^{50}=-15.76\pm0.14 $ suggesting that it is of intermediate brightness when compared to IIP SNe such as SN 2005cs at the faint end, and more typical events such as SN 1999em. This is further supported by relatively low expansion velocities (Fe IIλ5169 ∼ 3000 km s−1 at +42 d). Using archival HST/WFC3 imaging data, we find a point source coincident with the supernova position in the F350LP, F555W, F814W, and F160W filters. This source shows no significant variability over the ∼2 month time span of the data. From fits to the spectral energy distribution of the candidate progenitor, we find log(L/L⊙ ) ∼ 4.7 and Teff ∼ 3.5 kK, implying an M-type red supergiant progenitor. From comparisons to single and binary star models, we find that both favour the explosion of a star with a zero-age main sequence mass of ∼10 M⊙ . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
