Context. The origin of the slow solar wind is still an open issue. One possibility that has been suggested is that upflows at the edge of an active region can contribute to the slow solar wind. Aims. We aim to explain how the plasma upflows are generated, which mechanisms are responsible for them, and what the upflow region topology looks like. Methods. We investigated an upflow region using imaging data with the unprecedented temporal (3 s) and spatial (2 pixels = 236 km) resolution that were obtained on 30 March 2022 with the 174 channel of the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imager (EUI)/High Resolution Imager (HRI) on board Solar Orbiter. During this time, the EUI and Earth-orbiting satellites (Solar Dynamics Observatory, Hinode, and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, IRIS) were located in quadrature (∼92), which provides a stereoscopic view with high resolution. We used the Hinode/EIS (Fe XII) spectroscopic data to find coronal upflow regions in the active region. The IRIS slit-jaw imager provides a high-resolution view of the transition region and chromosphere. Results. For the first time, we have data that provide a quadrature view of a coronal upflow region with high spatial resolution. We found extended loops rooted in a coronal upflow region. Plasma upflows at the footpoints of extended loops determined spectroscopically through the Doppler shift are similar to the apparent upward motions seen through imaging in quadrature. The dynamics of small-scale structures in the upflow region can be used to identify two mechanisms of the plasma upflow: Mechanism I is reconnection of the hot coronal loops with open magnetic field lines in the solar corona, and mechanism II is reconnection of the small chromospheric loops with open magnetic field lines in the chromosphere or transition region. Context. A solar prominence and the quiet-Sun (QS) were observed with SOHO/SUMER in October 1999. With this dataset we built the first comprehensive UV spectral atlas in the range 800–1250 A for a prominence, thus complementing the existing reference atlases for the QS. Aims. This is a detailed study based on the information in this atlas, with the aim of deriving the plasma parameters in two distinct regions. The large amount of information available allows us to establish these parameters with lower uncertainty than in previous studies, leading to reference values for theoretical investigations. Methods. The measured lines’ FWHM were used to derive the distribution of the non-thermal velocities at various temperatures. The lines intensities were used to derive the electron densities at temperatures of 7 × 10 4 Ka nd the differential emission measure. Results. The comparison with the QS shows lower velocities in the prominence for temperature T with log T < 5.4. The velocities derived in the highest part of the prominence show a lower gradient with the temperature. The value obtained for the electron density indicates a low pressure prominence. We conclude with a discussion of the energy budget in the prominence.

Context: Magnetohydrodynamic thermal modes may play an important role in the formation, plasma condensation, and evolution of solar prominences. Unstable thermal modes due to unbalance between radiative losses and heating can lead to rapid plasma cooling and condensation. An accurate description of the radiative loss function is therefore crucial for this process. Aims: We study the stability of thermal modes in unbounded and uniform plasmas with properties akin to those in solar prominences. Effects due to partial ionization are taken into account. Three different parametrizations of the radiative loss function are used. Methods: By means of a normal mode analysis, we investigate linear nonadiabatic perturbations superimposed on the equilibrium state. We find an approximate instability criterion for thermal modes, while the exact linear growth rate is obtained by numerically solving the general dispersion relation. The stability of thermal disturbances is compared for the three different loss functions considered. Results: Using up-to-date computations of radiative losses derived from the CHIANTI atomic database, we find that thermal modes may be unstable in prominences for lower temperatures than those predicted with previously existing loss functions. Thermal instability can take place for temperatures as low as 15,000 K, approximately. The obtained linear growth rates indicate that this instability might have an important impact on the dynamics and evolution of cool prominence condensations., Accepted for publication in A&A
