Methylmercury (MeHg) is a widespread contaminant that bioaccumulates in marine food webs, including those in the Mediterranean sea. It poses serious health risks, especially to developing infants and children, where exposure can cause neurological damage and developmental delays. In addition to health concerns, high MeHg levels in seafood can lead to economic losses through cognitive impairments that reduce productivity. Despite seafood being a dietary staple in Mediterranean countries, the full extent of MeHg's health and economic impacts remains underexplored, especially with the rising international trade. This study aims to (a) estimate MeHg exposures in Mediterranean populations from consumption of Mediterranean seafood and (b) quantify the economic costs associated with MeHg intake. We assessed population exposures in Mediterranean countries by combining a highly granular seafood supply data on Aquatic Resource Trade in Species (ARTIS), alongside Global Dietary Database (GDD) and review of MeHg levels in Mediterranean seafood. The economic cost was then derived by linking MeHg intake to productivity losses associated with cognitive deficits. As a result, we estimate that Mediterranean countries experience over €10 billion in annual economic losses due to IQ-related productivity decline associated with MeHg exposure from consuming seafood sourced from various fishing areas of the Mediterranean Sea. The novelty of this research lies in its transdisciplinary approach to MeHg impact assessment that incorporates highly detailed seafood supply data with dietary surveys, and scientific literature to provide a more realistic and detailed view of MeHg exposures and the associated cost-of illness from local seafood consumption accross Mediterranean countries. These findings highlight a critical aspect of MeHg management: while international trade can mitigate local exposure by providing access to less-contaminated imports, it simultaneously exports the contamination burden to other regions. Cadmium is a ubiquitous and highly toxic contaminant that can cause serious adverse effects. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) have shown that the risk related to food contamination by cadmium cannot be ruled out in Europe and France. Fertilizing material is one of the main sources of cadmium contamination in the food chain on which regulators can play to reduce cadmium exposure in the population. The aim of this work was to develop a mass-balance approach integrating the various environmental sources of cadmium to estimate the effects of a decrease in cadmium concentrations in crop fertilizers on dietary exposure and on the health risk. This approach led to a predictive model that can be used as a decision-making tool. Representative and protective fertilization scenarios associated with controlled cadmium levels in mineral phosphate fertilizers were simulated and converted into cadmium fluxes. Cadmium inputs from industrial mineral phosphate fertilizers were then compared with cadmium brought by the application of manure, sewage sludge and farm anaerobic digest, at the levels typical of French agricultural practices. Regardless of the fertilizer and scenario used, a flux lower than 2 g Cd.ha -1 .year -1 reduces both the accumulation in soils and the transfer of cadmium in the food chain. It corresponds to a cadmium content of 20 mg.kg P 2 O 5 -1 or less in mineral phosphate fertilizers. Modelling the transfer of cadmium from the soil to consumed food made it possible to propose cadmium limits in fertilizers applied in France. Ingested soil is a major vector of organic contaminants from environment to free-ranged animals, particularly for grazing herbivores. Therefore, a better understanding of processes driving soil intake may provide new insights to limit animal exposure to contaminants and ensure safety of animal products. To maintain the supply service of livestock farming activities in contaminated areas, it is necessary to design adapted farming practices aiming at controlling the risk for human health. This study was conducted in the French West Indies, where chlordecone, an organochlorine insecticide previously used to protect banana plantation against the black weevil and banned since 1993, has polluted nearly 20% of agricultural surfaces since the 1970s. A crossover study design was performed to estimate soil intake by twelve tethered Creole young bulls according to different grazing practices. The objectives were to characterize the influence of (i) daily herbage allowance (LOW, HIGH, ADLIB: 100, 150, 300 g DM/kg BW 0.75 respectively); (ii) and soil surface moisture (SSM) testing grazing on a water-saturated (HUM) vs dried (DRY) ground. The herbage offer was managed via the allocated surfaces varying the chain length as animal holders commonly do in informal Caribbean systems. The results evidenced an increase in soil intake with DHA reduction (2.1 to 3.8% of DM intake; P < 0.05) and with SSM increase (2.4 to 3.6% of DM intake; P < 0.05). Herbage offer reduction involved a closer-to-the-ground grazing with shorter post-grazing sward surface height (82.2 to 63.3 mm; P < 0.001), and both herbage offer reduction and SSM increase amplified sward soiling (measured from titanium content in unwashed herbage and image analysis). This work showed that soil intake is unavoidable even when herbage offer is very generous. Industrial wastewater containing heavy metals is generally decontaminated by physicochemical treatment consisting in insolublizing the contaminants and separating the two phases, water and sludge, by a physical process (filtration, settling or flotation). However, chemical precipitation does not usually remove the whole pollution load and the effluent discharged into the environment can be toxic even if it comes up to regulatory standards. To assess the impact of industrial effluent from 4 different surface treatment companies, we performed standardized bioassays using seeds of the lettuce Lactuca sativa. We measured the rate of germination, and the length and mass of the lettuce plantlet. The results were used to compare the overall toxicity of the different effluents: effluents containing copper and nickel had a much higher impact than those containing zinc or aluminum. In addition, germination tests conducted using synthetic solutions confirmed that mixtures of metals have higher toxicity than the sum of their separate constituents. These biological tests are cheap, easy to implement, reproducible and highlight the effects caused by effluent treated with the methods commonly applied in industry today. Background: Pollinosis is found more frequently in urban areas than in rural environments. This could be partly related to the different types of pollen exposure in these dissimilar areas. The objective of this study was to compare the distribution of pollen in these environments across an urbanization gradient., Methods: Daily pollen abundances were obtained in France using Hirst-type sensors. Sampling was conducted from January to June in 2003 and 2006 in a rural area, a semi-rural area and in two urban areas, which were characterized by several urbanization criteria., Results: Total allergenic pollen abundance was higher in rural and semi-rural areas than in urban areas irrespective of the sampling year. Multivariate analyses showed that pollen exposures differed according to the type of area and were strongly explained by the urbanization gradient. Grass, ash, birch, alder, hornbeam, hazel and plantain pollen quantities exceeded the allergy threshold more often in rural settings than in urban areas. In urban areas, only plane pollen quantities exceeded the allergy threshold more often than in rural areas., Conclusions: Allergenic pollen exposure is higher in rural areas than in urban areas, and the most abundant pollen in each area did not originated from the same taxa. This result should be taken into account in epidemiological studies comparing allergies in rural and urban areas to adapt the panel of pollen extracts for human environmental exposure. A comparative study of proteome maps from control and Cd-exposed rat liver was performed using a new technology of two-dimensional liquid chromatography separation method (PF-2D system, Beckman Coulter). Rats were fed for one month 0 or 100 μg Cd g(-1). The between-replicate and between-sample variations showed good repeatability and suitable reproducibility for the two dimensions of separation of proteins. In this complex mixture, PF-2D led to the separation of two major peaks which differed between control and Cd-exposed rat livers, one being identified by mass spectrometry as Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), a well-known biomarker of Cd exposure, the other as phosphatidylethanolamine binding protein (PEBP). SOD content was decreased in Cd-exposed rat liver, compared to the control group which was corroborated by a significant decrease of SOD activity. PEBP content also tended to be decreased after Cd exposure. Amphipods from the genus Gammarus are among the most frequently used organisms in ecotoxicological testing and in situ bioindication. Because of their importance in risk assessment, it is necessary to understand the potential roles of life stage, population source and inter-specific differences on the sensitivity of these organisms to contaminants. In the present study, the acute toxicity of deltamethrin, a commonly used pyrethroid insecticide, has been tested for Gammarus fossarum and Gammarus pulex (Crustacea, Amphipoda) to document the inter- and intra-specific variability at different developmental stages. Adult G. fossarum were about two-fold more sensitive to deltamethrin than adult G. pulex, 96-h LC50 being 33.2 and 68.0 ng L(-1), respectively. However, in the same species, significant differences of sensitivity were observed between individuals from different locations. Furthermore, G. fossarum from certain localities were less sensitive to deltamethrin than certain G. pulex. In addition, juveniles of both species were about 14- to 22-fold more sensitive to deltamethrin than adults: 48-h LC50 in G. fossarum and G. pulex juveniles were 4.0 and 5.7 ng L(-1). Therefore, lethal effects of deltamethrin on Gammarus sp. populations likely depend more on juvenile response rather than on adult response. All over the world, insecticides and fungicides are used to protect wood against pathogens. To document the environmental toxicity of wood preservative mixtures, freshwater amphipods Gammarus pulex (L.) were submitted to organic pesticides given independently or in mixtures. When given independently at environmentally realistic concentrations, propiconazole and tebuconazole (triazoles fungicides) were not toxic for G. pulex, 3-iodo-2-propinyl butyl carbamate (IPBC, fungicide) was moderately toxic, and cypermethrin (pyrethroid insecticide) was extremely toxic. 96-h LC50 were, respectively, 4703, 1643, 604, and 0.09 microg L(-1). When amphipods were submitted to a mixture mimicking the composition of a commercial solution (18.2% of cypermethrin, 45.8% propiconazole, 17.2% tebuconazole, 18.8% IPBC), the overall toxicity was equal to that of the most toxic component, namely cypermethrin. But, when organisms were submitted to the real commercial mixture containing pesticides, solvents and additives, the toxic effects were markedly higher. Moreover, a third mixture with only 0.002% cypermethrin showed lethality 2.5-18-fold higher than those predicted by the commonly used models. The present results show that toxicity of wood preservative mixtures cannot be assessed starting only from the toxicities of each single component. Furthermore, the present data strongly suggest that the environmental impacts of wood preservative mixtures might be frequently underestimated.

This article describes the adsorption of an anionic dye, namely C.I. Acid Blue 25 (AB 25), from aqueous solutions onto a cationized starch-based adsorbent. Temperature was varied to investigate its effect on the adsorption capacity. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms were measured for the single component system and the experimental data were analyzed by using Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, Generalized, Redlich-Peterson, and Toth isotherm equations. Five error functions were used to determine the alternative single component parameters by non-linear regression due to the bias in using the correlation coefficient resulting from linearization. The error analysis showed that, compared with other models, the Langmuir model described best the dye adsorption data. Both linear regression method and non-linear error functions provided the best-fit to experimental data with the Langmuir model.

In an experimental food chain, Wistar rats were fed cadmium (Cd) in an inorganic (CdCl(2)) or organic (mainly associated with metallothionein from Helix aspersa snail viscera) form. After 1 month of exposure to 100 microg inorganic Cd g(-1) in food, an induction of metallothionein was observed in all target tissues. In liver, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity decreased and alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) activity increased, suggesting that Cd causes hepatotoxicity. However, lipid peroxidation as well as catalase and caspase 3 (a marker of apoptosis) activities were not modified. At a rather low exposure (2.5 microg Cd g(-1)), metallothionein level in the kidney was found to be the most sensitive biomarker of exposure for both Cd forms. In the small intestine of rats ingesting inorganic Cd, metallothionein expression was significantly higher than that observed for rats fed organic Cd. Present results allowed proposing a simple design to assess the effect of a chemical in a trophic transfer approach.

Juvenile snails were exposed during their growth period to Cd-contaminated field and artificial soils and then transferred to uncontaminated soil to assess the sequels of previous exposure on adult reproduction. Growth modelling highlighted growth inhibitions of 5% and 10% after 70 and 84 days of exposure to 20 and 100 mg Cd kg(-1) in artificial soils, respectively. Growth disruption was accompanied by a decrease in the clutch number and a 4-week delay in the egg-laying cycle. Although it was also contaminated at 20 mg Cd kg(-1), the contaminated field soil did not lead to detectable effects in snails, suggesting a lower Cd bioavailability confirmed by the bioaccumulation analysis. We demonstrated that the 28-day growth test, as advised by the ISO-guideline, may not be sufficient to assess sublethal toxic effects of realistically contaminated soils. For this purpose, a life cycle experimental set-up is proposed, allowing a thorough assessment of toxicity during successive life stages.

Chitosan-based adsorbent (CHITOD material) is used for the removal of Basic Blue 3 (BB 3) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption of BB 3 on CHITOD material was studied as a function of time, sorbent mass and concentration. The influence of these parameters on the adsorption capacity was evaluated using the batch method. Results of adsorption experiments and kinetic data showed that (i) the CHITOD adsorbent exhibited high sorption capacities toward BB 3; (ii) the Langmuir equation represented the best fit of experimental data; (iii) the dye sorption on material was exothermic and spontaneous in nature; (iv) the kinetic measurements showed that the process was rapid; (v) the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second order model; and (vi) the sorption was dependent on the presence of sulfonate groups. Non-linear method was also found to be more appropriate method for estimating the isotherm and kinetic parameters.

We studied the effects of lead pollution on testate amoebae communities living on Sphagnum fallax by growing this moss under controlled conditions. A progressive series of lead (Pb) concentration was used in the growing solution of the mosses: 0 (control), 625 and 2,500 microgL(-1). The mosses were sampled and analysed for accumulated Pb and testate amoeba communities after 0, 6, 12, and 20 weeks. Species richness, total density and total biomass of testate amoebae declined in response to the Pb treatment and changed over time. The Pb x Time cross-effect was significant for species richness, and total density but not for the total biomass and Shannon diversity. Furthermore, the testate amoebae species richness and the total density were negatively correlated to the Pb concentrations actually accumulated in the moss at the end of the experiment. Species-specific responses of testate amoebae to Pb pollution were identified. Our results thus confirm the sensitivity of testate amoebae to lead pollution.

Despite the dramatic decrease of atmospheric lead (Pb) concentrations in urban areas of most industrialised countries, we hypothesised that urban common blackbirds (Turdus merula) may still be contaminated by Pb concentrations of toxicological concern due to transfer from soil through the food chain. We sampled blackbirds and earthworms, one of their main preys, in Besançon, a middle-size city of Eastern France (where atmospheric Pb concentrations decreased from 0.5 microg/m(3) in 1987 to nearly 0 in 2002) and in a rural reference site. Lead concentrations were determined in the tissues of the different functional groups of earthworms (anecic, epigeous and endogeous) and in blood, washed and unwashed outermost tail feathers and breast feathers of blackbirds. Fresh masses and an index of individual body condition were measured in the two blackbird populations as biomarkers of possible toxic effects. Lead concentrations in earthworms did not differ among functional groups but were significantly higher in urban individuals than in rural ones. Concentrations in outermost tail feathers, breast feathers and blood were significantly higher in urban blackbirds (7.75+/-4.50, 3.15+/-1.77 and 0.15+/-0.09 microg/g, respectively) than in rural individuals. In urban blackbirds, concentrations in washed and unwashed outermost tail feathers allowed estimating the external contamination (probably due to deposition of dusts and/or to excretion of the uropygial gland) at 37% of the total Pb concentration of the unwashed feathers. Remaining 63% should be linked to food chain transfer of persistent Pb from urban soils. Among the 23 sampled blackbirds, 4 of them (3 in the urban site and 1 in the rural site) exhibited blood Pb concentrations higher than the benchmark value (0.20 microg/g) related to subclinical and physiological effects in birds. Variations in body condition index were not correlated to Pb concentrations in blackbird tissues. Present results suggest that Pb may still be of environmental concern for blackbirds in urban areas because of the persistence of Pb in soils and its transfer through the food chain.

To evaluate the contribution of digestive and epithelial transfer of Cd from soil to snail, Helix aspersa was exposed to an artificial substrate contaminated with 0,100,500, and 1000 microg Cd.g(-1) for 4 weeks under laboratory conditions. Two modes of exposure were used: (1) the snails were in direct contact with the substrate (DC) or (2) were separated from substrate with a perforated plate (no contact (NC)) which allowed ingestion of substrate but avoided epithelial contact. Cd concentrations in DC snails were twice as high as in NC snails. The bioaccumulation factors were 0.51+/-0.13 in DC snails and 0.26+/-0.04 in NC snails. Juvenile Helix aspersa snails were exposed for 4 weeks to fresh rape leaves (Brassica napus), contaminated by simulating superficial deposits of increasing concentrations of cadmium (Cd). The Cd concentration in leaves was 0.1 in control and 38.4, 93.1, and 177.2 microg x g(-1) (dry mass) in Cd-treated food. The concentration in snail tissues increased with increasing Cd concentrations in the food. The bioaccumulation factors ranged from 4.8 (control) to 2.4 (highest exposed group), indicating a biomagnification of Cd in this food chain. The growth of the snails treated with Cd was reduced by 17, 24, and 43% respectively, compared to the control group. Comparison of these results with those obtained with snails exposed to similar Cd concentrations in a vegetable flour revealed that accumulation and effects were relatively consistent, demonstrating a comparable bioavailability of Cd in the two diets. Tests using growing H. aspersa snails exposed to metals in flour or fresh leaves can be useful for risk assessment purposes.

A quantitative analysis of 137Cs bioavailability in forest soils in the long term after the Chernobyl NPP accident based on a 3-year (1996-1998) investigation is presented. Five forest sites with different trees, composition and properties of soil were studied to identify factors determining radiocaesium transfer to different understory species. The following parameters were investigated: 137Cs activity concentrations and its speciation in various horizons of forest soil, accumulation of this radionuclide by different species of understory vegetation and distribution of root biomass in the soil profile. It has been shown that one decade after the deposition maximum 137Cs activity in soil of the experimental sites considered is located in different soil layers dependent on moisture regime, characteristics of litter and soil properties. A linear dependence between aggregated transfer factors for different species and groups of species of understory vegetation and exchangeable and available fractions of radiocaesium in soil was found. The vertical distribution of 137Cs activity, percentage of exchangeable radiocaesium in each horizon of litter and soil, as well as distribution of root systems (mycelia) over the soil profile are key factors governing variations in the availability of 137Cs for transfer to all forest understory components.
