1. Accelerated weathering performance of injection moulded PP and LDPE composites reinforced with calcium rich waste resources

Abstract

This study aims to assess and understand the accelerated weathering performance of injection moulded PP and LDPE composites reinforced with calcium rich waste resources for the first time. Two different calcium rich wastes: FGD gypsum and marble waste are incorporated without any chemical treatment in the polymer matrices. Visual appearance, chemical changes, flexural properties (strength, modulus and elongation) and surface morphology are analysed. Weathered surfaces are studied to analyse the structural changes with morphology by FTIR and SEM. LDPE showed higher visual stability by weathering with enhanced flexural properties for FGD gypsum composites. FTIR analysis revealed that the composites prepared with LDPE had a stabilizing effect on photo-degradation (minimum carbonyl index=1.09–1.14), which correlates well with the results of mechanical testing, showing these composites retained remarkable mechanical properties (retention rate>85%.) after weathering. Visual appearances, physical and mechanical properties of polymer composites are affected by the accelerated weathering condition. UV radiation in combination with temperature, humidity and water spray leads to polymer crystallinity with degradation resulting in weaker interfacial bonding and detachment of filler from matrix. Results show that the flexural strength of weathered FGD gypsum-PP, marble waste-PP and marble waste-LDPE composites decreased about 7–38%, 50–59% and 5–6%, respectively. Flexural strength of the weathered FGD gypsum-LDPE composites increased about 7–12%. The present study implies that both the reinforcements can enhance the properties of PP and LDPE composites after accelerated UV weathering exposure with potential for civil engineering applications. FGD gypsum is more prominent while structural and durability performances are taken into account.

Abstract

Platelets contain a multitude of growth factors and play a crucial role in physiological processes such as thrombogenesis, tissue repair, and angiogenesis. As a result, platelet-derived products have significant potential for efficient utilization in the realm of regenerative medicine due to their therapeutic and biological attributes. Numerous studies have already substantiated the therapeutic viability of platelets in various canine ailments. The existing literature indicates a substantial surge in the clinical application of canine platelets, positioning platelet-derived products as a viable alternative to conventional therapeutic agents. Platelet concentrates, including platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin are commonly used as a therapeutic modality in clinical cases. These therapeutic derivatives exhibit effectiveness in tissue regeneration and can serve as complementary therapies. Notably, they offer a cost-effective and easily accessible therapeutic option, which has demonstrated its benefits in chronic inflammatory disorders such as osteoarthritis and tendinitis, ophthalmic conditions, wound healing, and mandibular injuries in canine patients. The broad spectrum of therapeutic effects displayed by platelets is providing researchers with novel perspectives for crafting therapeutic models in future investigations. This review centers on exploring the therapeutic potential of canine platelets across diverse disorders. Further exploration into platelet products, encompassing their preparation and applicability in canine medicine, is imperative. Abstract

Aims: The aim of this study was to find out a mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) source from human dental tissues of the same donor (follicle, papilla and pulp), which exhibits higher neurogenic differentiation potential in vitro., Main Methods: MSCs were isolated from dental tissues (follicle, papilla and pulp) by digestion method. All MSCs were analyzed for pluripotent makers by western blot, cell surface markers by flow cytometry, adipo- and osteocytes markers by RT-qPCR. The neuronal differentiated MSCs were characterized for neuronal specific markers by RT-qPCR and immunofluorescence. Functional neuronal properties were analyzed by electrophysiology and synaptic markers expression., Key Findings: All MSCs expressed pluripotent markers (Oct4, Sox2 and Nanog) and were found positive for mesenymal markers (CD44, CD90, CD105) while negative for hematopoietic markers (CD34 and CD45). Furthermore, MSCs were successfully differentiated into adipocytes, osteocytes and trans-differentiated into neuronal cells. Among them, dental pulp derived MSCs exhibits higher neurogenic differentiation potential, in term of expression of neuronal specific markers at both gene and protein level, and having higher Na(+) and K(+) current with the expression of synaptic markers., Significance: The three types of dental MSCs from a single donor broadly possessed similar cellular properties and can differentiate into neuronal cells; however, pulp derived MSCs showed higher neurogenic potential than the follicle and papilla, suggesting their use in future stem cells therapy for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors.
