The health status of residents impacted by connected diseases is urgently needed. A twelve-year study was carried out to identify the spatial distribution pattern of high fluoride/arsenic groundwater in an arid/semi-arid area and to estimate the population exposed to related disease. A geostatistical interpolation method and a disease inversion model were used. The results indicated that fluoride/arsenic-rich groundwater primarily accumulated in basins of Shanxi Province. Groundwater fluoride exposure provided a health concern to 3.16 million persons (9.08 % of the population), including 2.50 million children at risk of dental caries. Exposure to groundwater arsenic caused a health risk to 4.38 million inhabitants (12.58 % of total), with 1.92 million at risk of lung cancer, 1.87 million at risk of bladder cancer, and 0.29 million at risk of skin cancer, respectively. The pollution and impact of groundwater fluoride and arsenic vary greatly among residents in different environments, and accurate assessment of the affected population is of great significance for residents' health and water quality management. Flavonoids, common natural polyphenolic compounds from plants, have been proposed as highly effective and safe algicides. However, the molecular mechanism of flavonoids inhibiting Microcystis aeruginosa remains unclear. This study aims in exploring the global transcriptional changes and molecular docking in cyanobacterial cells in response to flavonoids. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that 5,4'-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) primarily affected the genes transcription of iron and zinc ion transport, resulting in the blockage of transport for iron (II), iron (III) and zinc (II), which eventually led to a decrease in intracellular iron and zinc content. 5,4'-DHF can also interfere with iron and zinc transport by binding to metal ion transport-related proteins, leading to eliminated biological activities in M. aeruginosa. Meanwhile, 5,4'-DHF inhibit microcystin synthesis and reduce the content of intercellular toxin by inhibiting the transcription of mcyC and binding with McyC protein, implying that 5,4'-DHF have potential to reduce the risk of microcystins in the environment. Moreover, iron starvation and down-regulation of photosynthesis-related genes transcription led to the inhibition of electron transport in photosynthetic system. Calcium peroxide (CP) is an oxidizing agent that can gradually release hydrogen peroxide (HP) to achieve selective killing of cyanobacteria in water blooms, and reduce the phosphorus content in the water column. Despite the potential of CP for use in cyanobacterial water bloom disposal, there is a lack of research on the mechanism of oxidative damage on cyanobacterial cells by calcium peroxide. Further studies are required to comprehend the underlying scientific principles and potential risks and benefits of applying this approach to cyanobacteria disposal. In this investigation, we employed varying doses of CP for the treatment of Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), which resulted in the following findings: (1) the HP released from CP can damage the photosystem II of M. aeruginosa, reduce cell photosynthetic pigment content, intensify the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation, and increase the extracellular protein content; (2) CP significantly increased the soluble extracellular polysaccharide (sEPS) and bound extracellular polysaccharide (bEPS) content of cells (p < 0.05), causing the cells to exist as agglomerates and effectively allowing them to flocculate and precipitate, reducing the turbidity of the water body; (3) The increased dose elevated the pH and calcium ions significantly decreased the orthophosphate content, resulting in an increase in extracellular alkaline phosphatase activity, but possibly increasing the total extracellular nitrogen content. A detailed understanding the metals binding with algal organic matter (AOM) is essential to gain a deeper insight into the toxicity and migration of metals in algae cell. However, the molecular complexation mechanism of the metals binding with AOM remains unclear. In this study, cadmium ion (Cd 2+ ) binding properties of AOMs from Scenedesmus obliquus, which included extracellular organic matter (EOM) and intracellular organic matter (IOM), were screened. When Cd 2+ < 0.5 mg/L, the accumulation of Cd 2+ could reach 40%, while Cd 2+ > 0.5 mg/L, the accumulation of Cd 2+ was only about 10%. EOM decreased gradually (from 8.51 to 3.98 mg/L), while IOM increased gradually (from 9.62 to 21.00 mg/L). The spectral characteristics revealed that IOM was richer in peptides/proteins and had more hydrophilic than EOM. Both EOM and IOM contained three protein-like components (containing tryptophan and tyrosine) and one humic-like component, and their contents in IOM were higher than that in EOM. The tryptophan protein-like substances changed greatly during Cd 2+ binding, and that the tryptophan protein-like substances complexed to Cd 2+ before tyrosine protein-like substances in IOM was identified. Moreover, the functional groups of N-H, O-H, and CO in AOM played an important role, and the N-H group was priority to interacts with Cd 2+ in the complexing process. More functional groups (such as C-O and C-N) were involved in the metals complexing in EOM than in IOM. It could be concluded that Cd 2+ stress promoted the secretion of AOM in Scenedesmus obliquus, and proteins in AOM could complex Cd 2+ and alleviate its toxicity to algal cell. The largest engineered water diversion project-the Middle Route of the South to North Water Diversion Project (MRP), is of strategic importance in solving the problem of the northern water shortage in China. Eukaryotic plankton are important to the water quality stability in the MRP, but little has been reported about their dynamics and assembly processes, especially for abundant and rare communities. In this study, amplicon sequencing was used to investigate the eukaryotic plankton communities. The results revealed both abundant and rare communities exhibited similar distance-decay patterns, but abundant communities were particularly subject to environmental heterogeneity and played an important role in determining seasonal differences in eukaryotic plankton communities and alpha diversity. In the MRP, with its strong hydrodynamic exchange, abundant and rare communities were mainly affected by stochastic processes, especially homogenizing dispersal. In addition, abundant communities were subject to moderate variable selection (25 %) and rare communities were affected by a higher proportion of dispersal limitation (27 % vs. 10 %). The variation in water temperature and water velocity led to a shift from a stochastic to a deterministic process dominating the assembly of abundant communities. Rivers are severely polluted by multiple anthropogenic stressors. An unevenly distributed landscape pattern can aggravate the deterioration of water quality in rivers. Identifying the impacts of landscape patterns on the spatial characteristics of water quality is helpful for river management and water sustainability. Herein we quantified the nationwide water quality degradation in China's rivers and analyzed its responses to spatial patterns of anthropogenic landscapes. The results showed that the spatial patterns of river water quality degradation had a strong spatial inequality and worsened severely in eastern and northern China. The spatial aggregation of agricultural/urban landscape and the water quality degradation exhibits high consistency. Following the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) impoundment, many tributaries were turned into bays; hydrodynamic conditions of TGR profoundly changed the residence time, temperature, and nutrient distributions of bays, and nutrient enrichment occurred in these bays. However, little research has been done on the effects of water level qqfluctuations (WLFs) of TGR on the bay. In this study, Xiangxi Bay (XXB), one of the tributaries of TGR, was selected as the delegate to construct and calibrate a two-dimensional hydrodynamic-temperature-tracer-water quality model based on the CE-QUAL-W2. The results were the following: 1) In spring, as total nitrogen (TN) in the TGR tended to be higher than that in the XXB, the downward WLF increased water exchange, TGR-XXB nutrient flux and TN in the epilimnion of the XXB, and decreased the water exchange and TN in the hypolimnion of the XXB. The upward WLF did the opposite. The situation would be reversed in autumn. 2) Under a larger magnitude or a shorter period of WLF, its corresponding effects on the water exchange and TN increased. 2) Both the downward and upward modes of WLF helped to decrease the thermal stratification of XXB. 4) The upward/downward WLF could be used to decrease the epilimnetic TN of XXB in spring/autumn, and was suggested to reduce the local algal bloom. Single-cell studies can help to understand individual differences and obtain atypical cellular characteristics in view of cellular heterogeneity. Herein, the accumulation of mercury (Hg) in single algae cells was studied by droplet chip-time resolved inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analytical system, and the relation of Hg accumulation to the physiological responses of algae cell was explored. When low concentrations of Hg 2+ (5-20 μg/L) were used in the exposure experiment, the content of Hg in single cells increased in first 2 h, then decreased with further increase of exposure time to 96 h, probably due to the growth dilution effect of the algae. When exposed to 30 μg/L Hg 2+ , the uptake of Hg by individual cells increased over time, which was associated with increased cell membrane permeability. The exposure to Hg 2+ (5-30 μg/L) inhibited the growth of algae in a concentration-dependent manner and serious growth inhibition occurred under the exposure concentration of 30 μg/L. While the exposure concentration was lower than 20 μg/L, algal cells exhibited a recover tendency due to the self-protection mechanism of algal cells. Bivariate results showed that intracellular Hg accumulation was significantly negatively correlated with cells growth in terms of OD 680 , photosynthetic pigments, F v /F m and PI abs . On the contrast, reactive oxygen species content, superoxide dismutase activity, and cell membrane permeability were significantly positively correlated with the accumulation of intracellular Hg. The critical role of nitrogen in the global proliferation of cyanobacterial blooms is arousing increasing attention. However, the mechanism underlying the algal responses to differential nitrogen forms remains unclarified. The physiological and transcriptomic changes of Microcystis aeruginosa supplied with different nitrogen forms (nitrate and ammonium) were highlighted in this study. The results indicated that ammonium behaves better in stimulating the initial growth in N-limited cells than nitrate. However, a concomitant side effect is that cellular growth and photosynthesis decreased due to photosystem II damage induced by excess absorbed light energy under 10 mg L -1 ammonium. By contrast, adequate nitrate supply favored more efficient photosynthesis, higher biomass yield and microcystin quotas than ammonium. Depending on the supplied nitrogen form, different transcriptomic patterns were observed in M. aeruginosa. Under nitrate, the upregulation of genes involved in Arg biosynthesis, ornithine-urea cycle and photosynthesis increased nitrogen storage and cellular growth, while genes involved in cyclic electron flow around photosystem I and CO 2 -concentrating mechanism were heightened to dissipate excess energy under high ammonium. Investigations of microplastics have increased exponentially over the past decade, yet no information is currently available on the status of microplastics in strictly regulated, artificial bodies of water. The Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) in China, a highly regulated canal, supplies water to 19 cities and more than 53.10 million residents since 2014, as part of the world's largest inter-basin drinking water diversion project. In this study, the spatiotemporal distribution, characteristics, and polymer types of microplastics were surveyed for the first time in the Middle Route of the SNWDP. On average, microplastics were distributed at abundances of 516 items m -3 in water, 20 items kg -1 in biofilms (wet weight), and 24 items kg -1 in sediments (wet weight), lower than that in other typical inland waters. Both sites and seasons significantly affected microplastic abundance in water, biofilms, and sediments; microplastic abundance in water was also significantly positively correlated with distance to the headwork. The main microplastics in the canal were small (0.05-1 mm) polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers. Interestingly, microplastics were concentrated in biofilms, indicating that biofilms could serve as a sink for microplastics in the canal. Vehicular harvester was used to demonstrate the practicality of biofilm harvest to mitigate contamination with microplastics. Shanxi Province of northern China is a typical mining concentration and arsenism area. Years of mining activities have resulted in serious regional groundwater problems in Shanxi. Therefore, it is of great significance to know the health risk of groundwater arsenic on residents under the background of mining activities. Kriging interpolation was used to illustrate the spatio-temporal dynamics of the health risks on groundwater arsenic based on a ten-year investigation. The groundwater arsenic concentrations decreased over time and the distribution of high arsenic concentrations shrank. High arsenic concentrations were mainly distributed in the northern and middle basin areas. The forecasted area of high risks in coal mining areas was 5623 km 2 , which was larger than that in non-coal mining areas. The residents living around mining areas were more vulnerable to exposure to groundwater arsenic. Further, the output map outlines the high-risk zones in order to protect the safety of drinking water for residents. Groundwater pollution is becoming a more serious issue because of various anthropogenic activities. A large proportion of the population living in the urbanized and industrialized world is exposed daily to hazardous materials. However, despite the knowledge that protecting groundwater is necessary, little is known about the role of land-use change for human health risks. In this study, we analyzed the temporal and spatial variation of groundwater fluoride (F) and arsenic (As) during 2010-2018 in Shanxi Province of Northern China. Distribution areas of high F and As increased from 2010 to 2018 and spread over time. We assessed human health risk by calculating carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic risk. The results showed that F exposure, frequency of high concentration, and risk from 2016 to 2018 were higher than that in 2010-2015, and similar results were obtained for As exposure. Further, land-use change caused by anthropogenic activities increased F and As pollution in groundwater and placed humans at a higher health risk. Our study sheds light on anthropogenic activities that could increase human health risks caused by groundwater F and As via changing land-use. Exposomics is assessment of organism exposure to high priority environmental pollutants in an ecosystem using OMIC technologies. A virtual organism (VO) is an artificial property-tool (OMIC) reflecting exposomic process in compartments of real organisms. The exposomics of aquatic organisms inhabiting Lake Victoria (L.V.) and Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) were compared using VOs. The two reservoirs are heavily depended on for food and water both in Africa and China. The target priority pollutants in the reservoirs were polyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and persistent organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), medium chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs). The VOs showed that in a period of 28 days, aquatic organisms in TGR were exposed to total (∑) PAHs of 8.71 × 10 -6  mg/L, PCBs of 2.81 × 10 -6  mg/L, OCPs of 2.80 × 10 -6  mg/L, MCCPs of 8.9 × 10 -10  mg/L and SCCPs of 1.13 × 10 -7  mg/L. While in a period of 48 days, organisms in L. V. were exposed to total (∑) PAHs of 7.45 × 10 -6  mg/L, PCBs of 4.70 × 10 -6  mg/L, OCPs of 3.39 × 10 -8  mg/L, MCCPs of 4.6 × 10 -10  mg/L and SCCPs of 3.6 × 10 -9  mg/L. The exposomic levels in TGR after 28 days were higher than those in Lake Victoria after 48 days. In both reservoirs, bioaccumulation levels are above set standards for aquatic organisms. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) accumulated by semipermeable membrane device (SPMD)-based virtual organisms (VOs) and local feral fish were studied in Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), China. VOs were deployed at seven sites in TGR for two periods in 2009 and 5 species of fish with different living habitats and feeding habits collected in the same periods from two counties in TGR. The concentration and profile of PAHs and PCBs in fish were quite different from those in VOs. Most high-molecular-weight-PAHs were detected in VOs, while they were undetected in fish. Most PCBs were undetected in VOs, while most of them were detected in fish. Low-molecular-weight-PAHs were predominant contaminants of PAHs and non-dioxin-like-PCBs were the main PCBs in fish. The levels of PAHs and PCBs in the few fish samples were low and were not of concern based on chemical contaminant limits of non-carcinogenic effect.

Mass fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were calculated for the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in China, based on concentration and discharge data from the Yangtze River. Virtual Organisms (VOs) have been applied during four campaigns in 2008, 2009 (twice) and 2011 at sampling sites distributed from Chongqing to Maoping. The total PAH mass fluxes ranged from 110 to 2,160 mg s(-1). Highest loads were determined at Chongqing with a decreasing trend towards Maoping in all four sampling campaigns. PAH remediation capacity of the TGR was found to be high as the mass flux reduced by more than half from upstream to downstream. Responsible processes are thought to be adsorption of PAH to suspended particles, dilution and degradation. Furthermore, the dependence of PAH concentration upon water depth was investigated at Maoping in front of the Three Gorges Dam. Although considerable differences could be revealed, there was no trend observable. Sampling of water with self-packed filter cartridges confirmed more homogenous PAH depth distribution. Moreover, PAH content of suspended particles was estimated from water concentrations gathered by VOs based on a water-particle separation model and subsequently compared to PAH concentration measured in water and in filter cartridges. It could be shown that the modeled data predicts the concentration caused by particle-bound PAHs to be about 6 times lower than PAHs dissolved in water. Daning River is a deep tributary of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in China, with water level fluctuations of 30 m annually. It was assumed that the hydrologic regime would be the main driving force in the self-assembling of the phytoplankton community in the river. In order to test this hypothesis, limnological study was performed monthly in the estuary, midstream and upstream of this tributary from May 2008 to April 2009. We identified 17 phytoplankton functional groups among 63 genera. These phytoplankton functional groups varied significantly, both seasonally and longitudinally. During the flood season (March-September), low water level and high inflows caused a marked increase in the turbidity, especially in the estuary and upstream, allowing functional group MP (the meroplanktonic diatoms) to dominate the phytoplankton community. Meanwhile, constant water level and high temperature led to the stability and thermal stratification in the midstream. These conditions resulted in a high phytoplankton biomass and the dominance of phytoplankton functional groups Y (Cryptomonas spp.) and Lo (motile Peridiniopsis niei and Peridinium) that were adapted to water stratification. During the dry season (October-February), although the inflows were low and water retention time was long, the thermal stratification was disrupted by the disturbance due to the impoundment of TGR, and the water column was deeply mixed. The phytoplankton biomass reduced and functional groups changed: group Lo declined, and group C (small diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana) increased in the estuary and midstream. Group Y replaced group MP to dominate the phytoplankton community in the upstream with the water becoming clear and stagnant. In this study, we investigated the combined effects of UV-B irradiation and herbicides (glyphosate, GPS; 2-Methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, MCPA-Na; 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, DCMU) and the antioxidant (ascorbic acid, ASC) on photosynthesis, antioxidant enzymes and DNA damage in two bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Anabaena sp. and Microcystis viridis. UV-B irradiance increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which decreased chlorophyll a fluorescence yield, pigment content and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content and caused serious DNA damage. The degree of these damages was aggravated by the addition of DCMU, GPS and MCPA, and was partially mitigated by the addition of ASC. During the recovery process, the degree and mechanism in restoring DNA damage and photosynthesis inhibition were different by the removal of UV-B and herbicides (DCMU, GPS and MCPA) in both cyanobacteria. These results suggest that the combination of UV-B and exogenous herbicides have detrimental effects on cyanobacterial metabolism through either a ROS-mediated process or by affecting the electron transport chain, and may cause the shifts in the phytoplankton community., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc.
