The extensive utilization of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) in agricultural practices ultimately poses a significant threat to both the environment and human health. This work focuses on the efficient degradation and detoxification of the representative NNI, thiamethoxam (THX), and explores the underlying mechanism using a Co-Fe-Mn mixed spinel doped carbon composite catalyst activated persulfate. The findings demonstrate that the composite effectively degrades THX, achieving a degradation rate of 95% in 30 mins, while requiring only a fraction (one-sixteenth) of the oxidant dosage compared to pure carbon. The study aimed to examine the negative impact of reactive halogens on reactive oxygen species within a saline environment. The degradation byproducts were linked to the presence of two common electron-withdrawing groups, namely halogens and nitro in the THX molecule. It was hypothesized that the degradation process was primarily influenced by C-N bond breaking and hydroxylation occurring between the diazine oxide and 2-chlorothiazole rings. Consequently, dehalogenation and carbonylation processes facilitated the elimination of halogenated components and pharmacophores from the THX, leading to detoxification. In addition to the identified free radical pathway including SO 4 •- , •OH and O 2 •- contributed to THX degradation, the participation of non-radical pathways ( 1 O 2 and electron transfer) were also confirmed. A green, high-efficiency, and wide pH tolerance water remediation process has been urgently acquired for the increasingly exacerbating contaminated water. In this study, a Fe 3+ /persulfate (Fe 3+ /PS) system was employed and enhanced with a green natural ligand cysteine (Cys) for the degradation of quinclorac (QNC). The introduction of Cys into the Fe 3+ /PS system widened the effective pH range to 9 with a superior removal rate for QNC. The mechanism revealed that the Fe 3+ /Cys/PS system can enhance the ability of degrading QNC by accelerating the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle, maintaining Fe 2+ concentration and thereby generating more HO • and SO 4 •- . The impact factors (i.e., pH, concentrations of PS, Fe 3+ and Cys) were optimized as well. This study screened a Trichoderma strain (Trichoderma pubescens DAOM 166162) from activated sludge to solve the limitation of traditional biological processes in the treatment of amoxicillin (AMO) containing wastewater. The mechanism of the removal of AMO wastewater by T. pubescens DAOM 166162 (TPC) was studied. AMO resulted in a higher protein percentage in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted by TPC, which facilitated the removal of AMO from the wastewater. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and excitation-emission matrix were used to characterize EPS produced by metabolizing different carbon sources. It was found that the hydroxyl group was the primary functional group in EPS. The life activity of TPC was the cause of the pH rise. The main pathway of degradation of AMO by TPC was the hydroxyl group uncoupling the lactam ring and the hydrolysis of AMO in an alkaline environment. The removal efficiency of AMO in wastewater by TPC was >98 % (24 h), of which the biodegradation efficiency was 70.01 ± 1.48 %, and the biosorption efficiency was 28.44 ± 2.97 %. In general, TPC is an effective strain for treating wastewater containing AMO. With the rapid depletion of fossil energy and increasingly severe environmental pollution, the development of biomass resources for biorefineries has become a new research focus. However, heavy metals may be released during the thermochemical treatment when the biomass materials used in biomass conversion are contaminated by heavy metals. This can cause secondary environmental pollution or transference to the target products, reducing product quality. Therefore, having a systematic understanding of the fate of heavy metals in biomass conversion is necessary for alleviating potential risks. This study presents the current status of contaminated biomass and conversion products involving thermochemical processes, the migration, transformation, and impact of heavy metals in biomass conversion was investigated, and the utilization of heavy metals in contaminated biomass was briefly outlined. Acidification caused by excessive fertilization and heavy metals contamination are two prominent problems of agricultural soils. Diazotrophic cyanobacteria play important role in nitrogen (N) input in agricultural ecosystem. However, the effects of diazotrophic cyanobacteria on the growth of rice and heavy metal uptake by rice grain in acidified and heavy metal contaminated paddy soil remain unknown. In this study, a newly recorded diazotrophic cyanobacterium Aliinostoc sp. YYLX235 was isolated from acidified paddy soil. The results of pot experiment and in situ field plot experiment demonstrated that Aliinostoc sp. YYLX235 could promote rice grain yield and decrease cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice grain. Nitrogen input by N 2 -fixation and increase of bio-available phosphorus (P) by promotion of activity of soil phosphatase may be the main mechanisms for growth-promoting effects of Aliinostoc sp. YYLX235 on rice. Binding and immobilization of Cd through hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino groups may be the reason for decrease of Cd accumulation in rice grain by Aliinostoc sp. YYLX235 inoculation. Background: The need for an effective tool to predict prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients is critical and unmet. Microbiota has recently been found involved in tumor progression and response to immunotherapy. However, the association of microbiota with the prognosis of HNSCC patients remains obscure. This study aims to investigate the association between tumor microbiota and outcomes of HNSCC patients., Methods: A retrospective study including 129 primary tumors of HNSCC was conducted. Using 16S rRNA sequencing, the profile and the composition of tumor microbiota were measured and their associations with overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS) were examined., Results: We observed a reduced richness and enriched abundances of genera Schlegelella and Methyloversatilis in tumor microbiota of HNSCC patients with poor prognosis. However, a richer tumor microbiota with greater abundances of genera Bacillus, and Lactobacillus and Sphingomonas was characterized in the patients with favorable prognosis.The ratio of these differentially abundant taxa, microbial dysbiosis index (MDI), was significantly associated with OS (hazard ratio [HR], 4.67, 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.51 to 8.69,P < 0.001) and DFS (HR, 2.89; 95% CI, 1.74 to 4.80, P < 0.001) independently of age, tumor size, lymph node metastasis, differentiation and p16 status. The risk score of multivariate Cox regression exhibited an excellent performance for estimating three-year OS (AUC of 0.826). We also found a richer tumor microbiota was correlated with moderate peritumoral inflammatory infiltration., Conclusion: These results indicate that tumor microbiota associates with outcomes of HNSCC patients., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The extensive use of neonicotinoid pesticides in the past two decades caused serious impacts on many kinds of living beings. Therefore, it has been strongly suggested to detoxify and eliminate neonicotinoids' residual levels in environment. Here, the degradation and detoxification of thiamethoxam (THX) by white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium was conducted. Results shown that P. chrysosporium can tolerate THX and degraded 49% of THX after incubation for 15 days, and then 98% for 25 days at the initial concentration of 10 mg/L, which indicates the excellent degradation ability of this fungus to THX. Based on the by-products identified, THX underwent dechlorination, nitrate reduction, and C-N cleavage between the 2-chlorothiazole ring and oxadiazine. (Z)-N-(3-methyl-1,3,5-oxadiazinan-4-ylidene)nitramide and 3-methyl-1,3,5-oxadiazinan-4-imine were identified as the main metabolites. The impacts of THX and its corresponding degradation intermediates on the growth of E. coil and Microcystis aeruginosa as well as the germination of rape and cabbage demonstrated that P. chrysosporium effectively degrades THX into metabolites and reduces its biotoxicity. The phytogenic algicide sanguinarine shows strong inhibitory effects on some bloom-forming cyanobacteria and exhibits great potential in cyanobacterial bloom mitigation. To evaluate the possible ecological effects of sanguinarine on microalgae, the effects and possible mechanisms of sanguinarine on the competition between bloom-forming cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii (formerly named Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii) and green alga Scenedesmus obliquus were investigated through co-culture competition test and comparative toxicological study including growth characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence transients, activities of antioxidant enzymes, and lipid peroxidation. The results of Raphidiopsis-Scenedesmus co-culture competition test showed that sanguinarine decreased the competition ability of R. raciborskii, which benefitted S. obliquus in winning the competition. Toxicological studies have shown that sanguinarine exhibited high inhibitory effects on the growth and photosynthesis of R. raciborskii but no obvious toxicity on S. obliquus at concentrations of no more than 80 μg L -1 . Oxidative damage partially contributed but was not the primary mechanism for the toxicity of sanguinarine on R. raciborskii. Aims: Infantile hemangioma (IH) is one of the most common tumors in infancy, which etiology and pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated, hypoxia and abnormal glucose metabolism is regarded as critical pathogenic factors. This study investigated the expression and function of glycolysis-associated molecules (GLUT1, HK2, PFKFB3, PKM2, and LDHA) under normoxic and hypoxic conditions to further understand the pathogenesis of IH., Main Methods: Hemangioma-derived endothelial cells (HemECs) were isolated from proliferating phase infantile hemangiomas and identified by immunofluorescence. HemECs and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. RNA and protein expression of glycolysis-associated molecules were analyzed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry. Glucose consumption, ATP production and lactate production were measured. Glycolysis-associated molecules were inhibited by WZB117, 3BP, 3PO, SKN, and GSK 2837808A and the resulting effects on HemECs proliferation, migration, and tube formation were quantified., Key Findings: Glycolysis-associated molecules were highly expressed at both mRNA and protein levels in HemECs compared with HUVECs (P < 0.05). Glucose consumption and ATP production were higher in HemECs than in HUVECs, while lactate production in HemECs was lower than in HUVECs (P < 0.05). Inhibition of some glycolysis-associated molecules reduced the proliferation, migration, and tube formation capacity of HemECs (P < 0.05)., Significance: Our study revealed that glycolysis-associated molecules were highly expressed in IH. Glucose metabolismin HemECs differed from normal endothelial cells. Quinclorac (3,7-dichloroquinoline-8-carboxylic acid, QNC) is a highly selective auxin herbicide that is typically applied to paddy rice fields. Its residue is a serious problem in crop rotations. In this study, Oryza sativa L. seedlings was used as a model plant to explore its biochemical response to abiotic stress caused by QNC and nZVI coexposure, as well as the interactions between QNC and nZVI treatments. Exposure to 5 and 10 mg/L QNC reduced the fresh biomass by 26.6% and 33.9%, respectively, compared to the control. The presence of 50 and 250 mg/L nZVI alleviated the QNC toxicity, but the nZVI toxicity was aggravated by the coexist of QNC. Root length was enhanced upon exposure to low or medium doses of both QNC and nZVI, whereas root length was inhibited under high-dose coexposure. Both nZVI and QNC, either alone or in combination, significantly inhibited the biosynthesis of chlorophyll, and the inhibition rate increased with elevated nZVI and QNC concentration. It was indicated that nZVI or QNC can affect the plant photosynthesis, and there was a significant interaction between the two treatments. Effects of QNC on the antioxidant response of Oryza sativa L. differed in the shoots and roots; generally, the introduction of 50 and 250 mg/L nZVI alleviated the oxidative stress (POD in shoots, SOD and MDA in roots) induced by QNC. However, 750 mg/kg nZVI seriously damaged Oryza sativa L. seedlings, which likely resulted from active iron deficiency. Phthalate esters (PAEs) are one of the most frequently detected organic pollutants in soils. In this work, the adsorption behaviors of di-ethyl phthalate (DEP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) on soils, humins (HM) and Clay organo-mineral complexes (Clay-OM) from four regions in China, Changchun (CC), Cangzhou (CZ), Yinchuan (YC), and Changsha (CS) were studied. The surface and structural properties of these sorbents were characterized using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance methods. The results showed that the CC soil has the largest pore volume (PV) and specific surface area (SSA). PV, SSA, and aliphatic carbon content of the samples ranked as Clay-OM > HM > soil. Adsorption experiments indicated that the Clay-OM exhibited the strongest adsorption affinity for both DBP and DEP, followed by HM, and then the soil samples. Furthermore, DEP and DBP adsorption amounts on the samples declined as follows: CC > CS > CZ > YC. To illustrate the dominant mechanisms for PAEs adsorption onto soil, the soil organic carbon content normalized adsorption coefficient (LogK oc ) was correlated with several possible parameters using multiple parameter linear regression and significance testing. The R 2 values of the DBP and DEP in multi-regression equations were 0.825 and 0.741 respectively, and the significance test suggested that pore structure and specific surface area had crucial influences on the adsorption progress., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. In this study, influences of cations (Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ), anions (NO 3 - , Cl - , and SO 4 2- ), and humic acid (HA) on the antimicrobial efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)/Ag + against Phanerochaete chrysosporium were investigated by observing cell viability and total Ag uptake. K + enhanced the antimicrobial toxicity of AgNPs on P. chrysosporium, while divalent cations decreased the toxicity considerably, with preference of Ca 2+ over Mg 2+ . Impact caused by a combination of monovalent and divalent electrolytes was mainly controlled by divalent cations. Compared to AgNPs, however, Ag + with the same total Ag content exhibited stronger antimicrobial efficacy towards P. chrysosporium, regardless of the type of electrolytes. Furthermore, HA addition induced greater microbial activity under AgNP stress, possibly originating from stronger affinity of AgNPs over Ag + to organic matters. The obtained results suggested that antimicrobial efficacy of AgNPs was closely related to water chemistry: addition of divalent electrolytes and HA reduced the opportunities directly for AgNP contact and interaction with cells through formation of aggregates, complexes, and surface coatings, leading to significant toxicity reduction; however, in monovalent electrolytes, the dominating mode of action of AgNPs could be toxic effects of the released Ag + on microorganisms due to nanoparticle dissolution., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Biochar and compost have been widely used for pollution remediation of heavy metals in soil. However, little research was conducted to explore the efficiency of biochar, compost and their combination to reduce heavy metals availability, and the effects of their additive on soil biological properties are often neglected. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of biochar, compost and their combination on availability of heavy metals, physicochemical features and enzyme activities in soil. Results showed that adding amendments to polluted soil significantly altered soil properties. Compared to the separate addition of biochar or compost, their combined application was more effective to improve soil pH, organic matter (OM), organic carbon (TOC) and available potassium (AK). All amendments significantly decreased the availability of Cd and Zn, but slightly activated As and Cu. In addition, soil enzyme activities were activated by compost and inhibited by biochar, but exhibited highly variable responses to their combinations. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that electrical conductivity (EC) and AK were the most important environmental factors affecting metal availability and soil enzyme activities including dehydrogenase, catalase, β-glucosidase, urease, acid and alkaline phosphatase, arylsulfatase except for protease and invertase. Availability of As, Cu, Cd and Zn affected dehydrogenase, catalase and urease activities. The ecological implications of livestock production intensification have received sustained attention across the globe. Anaerobic digestion is the main process for livestock waste treatment. However, the ecological consequences of dissolved organic matter originating from anaerobic digestion (AD-DOM) in eutrophic water bodies remain elusive. In this study, the physiological responses of a bloom-forming cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, to AD-DOM were investigated. Moreover, the composition of AD-DOM was identified by using thermochemolysis followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The growth of M. aeruginosa FACHB905 was not sensitive to low levels (0.625-1.25%, V/V) of AD-DOM but was inhibited by high levels (2.5-5%, V/V) of AD-DOM, resulting from photoinhibition damage to photosystem II (PSII). The main target of AD-DOM in PSII was the electron accepting side (ψ 0 ) or the electron donor side (φ P 0 ), depending on time variables. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) level showed a positive correlation with AD-DOM addition; however, it was higher than that of the control for 3.75-5% AD-DOM on the 6th day. The intracellular microcystin contents (including MC-LR and Dha 7 -MC-LR) decreased in response to AD-DOM addition, but extracellular microcystin increased after 6 days of exposure. In addition, GC-MS detection showed that AD-DOM is mainly composed of lignin-derived aromatic compounds, alkanes/alkene, nitrogen-containing compounds, and sterols. The results presented in this study suggested that AD-DOM released from the livestock industry may play a subtle role in affecting harmful algal blooms through level-dependent variables. As an atypical guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF), Dock5 has been extensively studied in cellular functions. However, the role of Dock5 on B-cell immunity still remain elusive. In this study, we generated a Dock5 knockout mouse model to study the effect of Dock5 deficiency on B cell development, differentiation and BCR signaling. We found that the absence of Dock5 leads to a moderate effect on B cell development in the bone marrow and reduces follicular (FO) and marginal zone (MZ) B cells. Mechanistically, the key positive upstream B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling molecules, CD19 and Brutons tyrosine kinase (Btk), whose activation determines the fate of FO and MZ B cells, is reduced in Dock5 KO B cells upon antigenic stimulation by using total internal reflection fluorscence microscopy (TIRF) and immunoblot. Interestingly we found that the cellular filamentous actin (F-actin), also decreased in Dock5 KO B cells upon stimulation, which, in turn, offers feedback to BCR signaling. Sixteen treatments of soil contaminated by Cu, Pb, and Zn by the addition of a different percentage of biochar and compost were incubated for 120 days. The abundance of denitrifying genes such as narG, nirK, nirS and nosZ and the ammonia-oxidizing amoA genes of ammonia-oxidizing archaea/bacteria (AOA/AOB), soil nitrite reductase activity (S-NiR) and their shaping factors were also determined. The relationships between functional genes, S-NiR, and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed using the Pearson correlation method. The study found that the changes in physico-chemical parameters, including water-soluble organic carbon (WSC), nitrate (NO 3 - ) and ammonium (NH 4 + ), were predominant in different treatments. The abundance of nirK and narG genes is most sensitive to the changes in the properties of the soil sample. Bacterial 16S rDNA gene abundance was significantly affected by NO 3 - and S-NiR (P < 0.05). Nitrifying genes were mainly correlated to WSC and S-NiR, while denitrifying genes were associated with pH, electrical conductivity, NO 3 - and S-NiR. The adsorption capacity of calcium alginate (Ca-alginate) beads was evaluated by measuring the removal of three organic compounds with different charges (malachite green, p-chlophenol and methyl orange). The diffusion was investigated in Ca-alginate hydrogel as a function of solute charge. It was found that an increased electrostatic attraction between the hydrogel and solute would improve the mobility of solute and hence enhance its adsorption efficiency. The degradation kinetics of charged pollutants by Ca-alginate with NZVI entrapped (NZVI-alginate) beads was compared to that of bare NZVI and the data followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Negatively charged Ca-alginate hydrogel strongly adsorbed positively charged pollutant, which led to an enhancement in degradation rate. However, the degradation efficiency of neutral and negatively charged pollutants by NZVI-alginate was comparable with that by bare NZVI. Thus, the degradation ability of NZVI-alginate was related with the diffusion and adsorption behavior of solutes in Ca-alginate hydrogel. The experimental results showed that the free calcium ions containing in Ca-alginate had a significant impact on the adsorption and degradation behaviors of positively charged pollutant, but those of neutral and negatively charged pollutants were only moderately affected. With the dispersity of NZVI particles in beads (1:1-1:4, w/w) increasing, the degradation efficiency of malachite green was improved, whereas further increase of NZVI dispersity (1:6, w/w) brought about a depressed degradation., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Due to the widespread application of white-rot fungi for the treatment of pollutants, it's crucial to exploit the special effects of pollutants on the microbes. Here, we studied the effects of cadmium on calcium homeostasis in the most studied white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The response of P. chrysosporium to cadmium stress is concentration-dependent. A high concentration of cadmium caused the release of calcium from P. chrysosporium, while a hormesis effect was observed at a lower cadmium concentration (10 μM), which resulted in a significant increase in calcium uptake and reversed the decrease in cell viability. Calcium (50 μM) promoted cell viability (127.2% of control), which reflects that calcium can protect P. chrysosporium from environmental stress. Real-time changes in the Ca 2+ and Cd 2+ fluxes of P. chrysosporium were quantified using the noninvasive microtest technique. Ca 2+ influx decreased significantly under cadmium exposure, and the Ca 2+ channel was involved in Ca 2+ and Cd 2+ influx. The cadmium and/or calcium uptake results coupled with the real-time Ca 2+ and Cd 2+ influxes microscale signatures can enhance our knowledge of the homeostasis of P. chrysosporium with respect to cadmium stress, which may provide useful information for improving the bioremediation process., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. The growing potential of quantum dots (QDs) in biomedical applications has raised considerable concerns regarding their toxicological impact. Consequently, there has been a need to understand the underlying toxicity mechanism of QDs. In this work, we comprehensively investigated the bioaccumulation and toxicity of three CdSe/ZnS QDs (COOH CdSe/ZnS 525, NH 2 CdSe/ZnS 525, and NH 2 CdSe/ZnS 625) in Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium) using confocal laser scanning microscopy, reactive oxygen species (ROS) measurements, and cell viability assays. Confocal laser scanning microscopy analytical results indicated that all the CdSe/ZnS QDs, with the concentration ranging from 10 to 80nM, could accumulate largely in the hyphae and induce the generation of ROS, showing a direct toxicity to P. chrysosporium. And the bioaccumulation and toxicity of CdSe/ZnS QDs presented dose-dependent and time-dependent effects on P. chrysosporium. Furthermore, the CdSe/ZnS QDs-induced cytotoxicity was also related to their physicochemical properties, including particle size and surface charges: NH 2 CdSe/ZnS 525 with small size was more cytotoxic as compared to NH 2 CdSe/ZnS 625 with large size, and the smaller negative charged NH 2 CdSe/ZnS 525 resulted in greater cytotoxicity than the larger negative charged COOH CdSe/ZnS 525. Remediating uranium contamination is of worldwide interest because of the increasing release of uranium from mining and processing, nuclear power leaks, depleted uranium components in weapons production and disposal, and phosphate fertilizer in agriculture activities. Iron-based technologies are attractive because they are highly efficient, inexpensive, and readily available. This paper provides an overview of the current literature that addresses the application of iron-based technologies in the remediation of sites with elevated uranium levels. The application of iron-based materials, the current remediation technologies and mechanisms, and the effectiveness and environmental safety considerations of these approaches were discussed. Because uranium can be reduced and reoxidized in the environment, the review also proposes strategies for long-term in situ remediation of uranium. Unfortunately, iron-based materials (nanoscale zerovalent iron and iron oxides) can be toxic to microorganisms. As such, further studies exploring the links among the fates, ecological impacts, and other environmentally relevant factors are needed to better understand the constraints on using iron-based technologies for remediation., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. This study investigated the performance of immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles in the treatment of raw landfill leachate with a very low biodegradability ratio (BOD5/COD) of 0.09. The effects of various operating parameters, such as initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration, pH, temperature, and biosorbent dosage, were evaluated with respect to the removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N). For the immobilized biosorbents, an optimum pH of 6.0 for TOC and 7.0 for NH3-N were found suitable for TOC and NH3-N removal at temperature of 37°C, respectively. The most superior removal efficiencies of TOC and NH3-N of landfill leachate were over 75% and 74% in 72 h at an initial COD concentration of 200 mg L(-1), respectively. In addition, heavy metals were partly removed by the immobilized biosorbents during the process of landfill leachate treatment. The species and mass percentage of organic compounds in landfill leachate after the treatment were found to have considerably declined according to the gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system. These results indicate that the immobilized P. chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles could be a convenient and efficient method for the treatment of landfill leachate., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. A novel biosorbent, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium, was applied to the bioremediation of composite-polluted wastewater, containing both cadmium and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The optimum removal efficiency achieved was 78% for Cd(II) and 95.4% for 2,4-DCP at initial concentrations of 20 mg/L Cd(II) and 40 mg/L 2,4-DCP. PPBs had significantly enhanced the resistance of P. chrysosporium to 2,4-DCP, leading to the degradation rates of 2,4-DCP beyond 90% with varying initial 2,4-DCP concentrations. This research demonstrated that 2,4-DCP and secreted proteins might be used as carbon and nitrogen sources by PVA-immobilized P. chrysosporium beads (PPBs) for Cd(II) removal. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of PPBs were dominant in Cd(II) binding. The mechanism underlying the degradation of 2,4-DCP into fumaric acid and 1-hexanol was investigated. Despite the knowledge about increasing discharge of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into wastewater and its potential toxicity to microorganisms, the interaction of AgNPs with heavy metals in the biological removal process remains poorly understood. This study focused on the effect of AgNPs (hydrodynamic diameter about 24.3±0.37 nm) on the removal of cadmium (Cd(II)) by using a model white rot fungus species, Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Results showed that the biological removal capacity of Cd(II) increased with the concentration of AgNPs increasing from 0.1 mg/L to 1 mg/L. The maximum removal capacity (4.67 mg/g) was located at 1 mg/L AgNPs, and then decreased with further increasing AgNPs concentration, suggesting that an appropriate concentration of AgNPs has a stimulating effect on the removal of Cd(II) by P. chrysosporium instead of an inhibitory effect. Results of Ag(+) and total Ag concentrations in the solutions together with those of SEM and XRD demonstrated that added AgNPs had undergone oxidative dissolution and transported from the solution to the surface of fungal mycelia (up to 94%). This study details a novel method for the extracellular microbial synthesis of cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) by the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium. P. chrysosporium was incubated in a solution containing cadmium nitrate tetrahydrate, which became yellow from 12h onwards, indicating the formation of CdS nanocrystals. The purified solution showed a maximum absorbance peak between 296 and 298 nm due to CdS particles in the quantum size regime. The fluorescence emission at 458 nm showed the blue fluorescence of the nanoparticles. X-ray analysis of the nanoparticles confirmed the production of CdS with a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure. The average grain size of the nanoparticles was approximately 2.56 nm, as determined from the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) measurement of the most intense peak using Scherer's equation. Transmission electron microscopic analysis showed the nanoparticles to be of a uniform size with good crystallinity. The changes to the functional groups on the biomass surface were investigated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the secretion of cysteine and proteins was found to play an important role in the formation and stabilization of CdS QDs.
