1. How to estimate variability in affinity relationships in partially observed groups of domestic herbivores?

Abstract

Animal sociability measurements based on inter-individual distances or nearest-neighbour distributions can be obtained automatically with telemetry collars. So far, all the indices that have been used require the whole group to be observed. Here, we propose an index of the variability in affinity relationships in groups of domestic herbivores, whose definition does not depend on group size and that can be used even if some data are missing. This index and its estimators are based on a function that measures how frequently an animal is closer than another one from a third animal. When no data are missing, we show that our estimator and the variance of the sociability matrixsensu Sibbald (considered as the reference method) are strongly correlated. We then consider two cases of missing data. In the first case, some animals are randomly missing, that is, to account for random breakdown of telemetry collars. Our estimator is unbiased by such missing data and its variance decreases as the number of observation dates increases. In the second case, the same animals are missing at all observation dates, that is, in large herds where there are more individuals to be observed than available telemetry collars. Our estimator of affinity variance within a group is biased by such missing data. Thus, it requires changing animals equipped with telemetry collars regularly during the experiment. Conversely, the estimator remains unbiased at the population level, that is, if several independent groups are being analysed. We finally illustrate how this estimator can be used by investigating changes in the variability of affinities according to group size in grazing heifers.

Abstract

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by a complex etiopathogenesis encompassing both host genetic and environmental -infectious/toxic- factors responsible for altered fibrogenesis and diffuse microangiopathy. A wide spectrum of clinical phenotypes may be observed in patients' populations from different geographical areas. We investigated the prevalence of specific clinical and serological phenotypes in patients with definite SSc enrolled at tertiary referral centres in different Italian geographical macro-areas. The observed findings were compared with those reported in the world literature.Materials and methods: The clinical features of 1538 patients (161 M, 10.5%; mean age 59.8 +/- 26.9 yrs.; mean disease duration 8.9 +/- 7.7 yrs) with definite SSc recruited in 38 tertiary referral centres of the SPRING (Systemic sclerosis Progression INvestiGation Group) registry promoted by Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR) were obtained and clustered according to Italian geographical macroareas.Results: Patients living in Southern Italy were characterized by more severe clinical and/or serological SSc phenotypes compared to those in Northern and Central Italy; namely, they show increased percentages of diffuse cutaneous SSc, digital ulcers, sicca syndrome, muscle involvement, arthritis, cardiopulmonary symptoms, interstitial lung involvement at HRCT, as well increased prevalence of serum anti-Scl70 autoantibodies. In the same SSc population immunusppressive drugs were frequently employed. The review of the literature underlined the geographical heterogeneity of SSc phenotypes, even if the observed findings are scarcely comparable due to the variability of methodological approaches.Conclusion: The phenotypical differences among SSc patients' subgroups from Italian macro-areas might be correlated to genetic/environmental co-factors, and possibly to a not equally distributed national network of information and healthcare facilities.

Abstract

Cryoglobulinemic vasculitis (CV) or cryoglobulinemic syndrome is a chronic small vessel vasculitis characterized by serum positive cryoglobulins, namely immune complexes which precipitate or form a gel at a temperature less than 37°C and redissolve after rewarming. Mixed cryoglobulinemia, is triggered by chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV), but it may also, less commonly, complicate connective tissue diseases, lymphoproliferative disorders and other chronic infections. In the last decades a number of steps forward have been made in the knowledge of this disorder and CV has changed from being considered solely an immune-complex mediated disease to a viral triggered condition. Nowadays we view this disease as a multifaceted condition with autoimmune features, triggered by HCV infection, coexisting with chronic smouldering lymphoproliferative process which usually remains unmodified for years or even decades, but which can turn into a frank malignant lymphoma on long-term follow-up in a limited numbers of cases. In this chapter we will review most recent progresses in this disease.

12. Conditions for patchiness in plankton models

Abstract

Plankton patchiness in homogeneous physical environments is studied in this paper assuming that all involved populations disperse diffusively. A recent but powerful sufficient condition for the emergence of spatial patterns in models with any number of species is systematically applied to all food chain and food web plankton models and the result is rather sharp: all models explicitly containing phytoplankton, zooplankton and planktivorous fish suggest zooplankton patchiness, while models not containing phytoplankton or fish populations do not. The results are in agreement with many previous but particular theoretical studies on plankton patchiness and Turing instability, and a testable prediction of the models satisfying the sufficient predictions is that zooplankton should be more patchy than phytoplankton, a property that is often seen in natural settings. An application to a complex model with five compartments (nutrient, phytoplankton, zooplankton, planktivorous fish, carnivorous fish) highlights the predictive power of the method.

We develop a mathematical model for mimicking the love story between Scarlett and Rhett described in "Gone with the Wind". In line with tradition in classical physics, the model is composed of two Ordinary Differential Equations, one for Scarlett and one for Rhett, which encapsulate their main psycho-physical characteristics. The two lovers are described as so-called insecure individuals because they respond very strongly to small involvements of the partner but then attenuate their reaction when the pressure exerted by the partner becomes too high. These characteristics of Scarlett and Rhett clearly emerge during the first part of the film and are sufficient to develop a model that perfectly predicts the complex evolution and the dramatic end of the love story. Since the predicted evolution of the romantic relationship is a direct consequence of the characters of the two individuals, the agreement between he model and the film supports the high credibility of the story. Although credibility of a fictitious story is not necessary from a purely artistic point of view, in most cases it is very appreciated, at the point of being essential in making the film popular. In conclusion, we can say that we have explained with a scientific approach why "Gone with the Wind" has become one of the most successful films of all times.

Abstract

We show in this paper that the analysis of diffusion-induced instability in spatially extended models can be performed by separating local dynamics from diffusion. This is possible not only in the case studied by Turing, namely models with two interacting variables, but also in the general case of three or more variables. The advantage of this decomposition, based on the notion of potential Turing instability, is illustrated through the analysis of two spatially extended plant-insect models.

Abstract

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by a complex etiopathogenesis encompassing both host genetic and environmental -infectious/toxic- factors responsible for altered fibrogenesis and diffuse microangiopathy. A wide spectrum of clinical phenotypes may be observed in patients' populations from different geographical areas. We investigated the prevalence of specific clinical and serological phenotypes in patients with definite SSc enrolled at tertiary referral centres in different Italian geographical macro-areas. The observed findings were compared with those reported in the world literature., Materials and Methods: The clinical features of 1538 patients (161 M, 10.5%; mean age 59.8 ± 26.9 yrs.; mean disease duration 8.9 ± 7.7 yrs) with definite SSc recruited in 38 tertiary referral centres of the SPRING (Systemic sclerosis Progression INvestiGation Group) registry promoted by Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR) were obtained and clustered according to Italian geographical macroareas., Results: Patients living in Southern Italy were characterized by more severe clinical and/or serological SSc phenotypes compared to those in Northern and Central Italy; namely, they show increased percentages of diffuse cutaneous SSc, digital ulcers, sicca syndrome, muscle involvement, arthritis, cardiopulmonary symptoms, interstitial lung involvement at HRCT, as well increased prevalence of serum anti-Scl70 autoantibodies. In the same SSc population immunusppressive drugs were frequently employed. Abstract

Background: A high percentage of systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients experience interstitial lung disease (ILD) during the disease course. Recent data have shown that lung ultrasound (LUS) can assess ILD by the evaluation of B-lines, the sonographic sign of pulmonary interstitial involvement., Research Question: To establish the prognostic value of B-lines in a large number of patients with SSc., Study Design and Methods: A total of 396 consecutive patients with SSc, who were enrolled at three Rheumatology Departments, underwent a comprehensive LUS examination on the anterolateral and posterior chest for a total of 58 scanning sites. All available clinical, imaging, and functional data were recorded. Patients were followed after enrolment to establish the prognostic role of LUS., Results: The median number of B-lines was higher in patients with the diffuse cutaneous subset (44 vs 17 B-lines; P < .0001), topoisomerase I autoantibodies (39 vs 16 B-lines; P < .0001), and the presence of ILD at chest high-resolution CT (45 vs 9 B-lines; P < .0001). At multivariable analysis, the number of posterior B-lines ≥5 was associated with new development or worsening ILD (hazard ratio, 3.378; 95% CI, 1.137-9.994; P = .028), with additional value over topoisomerase I positivity. The prognostic value was further confirmed in the subgroup of patients with known ILD at baseline (hazard ratio, 1.010; 95% CI, 1.003-1.018; P = .008)., Interpretation: Lung ultrasound B-lines are associated with worsening or development of pulmonary deterioration. In the near future, LUS might become part of the diagnostic and prognostic armamentarium in patients with SSc, which would allow a more sustainable and user-friendly approach to this very fragile population., (Copyright © 2020 American College of Chest Physicians. Abstract

The term "rhupus" is traditionally used to describe patients with coexistence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim of the present work was to investigate prevalence, clinical and radiological picture as well as the serological profile of a series of rhupus patients; SLE patients and RA patients from our Unit were used as disease control groups. A total of 103 consecutive SLE patients were screened; among the entire cohort, 10 patients (9.7%) were classified as "rhupus". In our rhupus patients SLE features preceded the onset of arthritis in 5 patients (50%) while in the remaining patients arthritis appeared before or simultaneously (3 and 2 patients respectively). As compared with SLE patients, rhupus patients have significantly less kidney involvement (p=0.01) while no differences were observed between neuropsychiatric, cutaneous, hematological involvement or serositis. At our physical examination, 9 (90%) rhupus patients were presenting active joint involvement; CRP positivity and ESR levels resulted significantly higher than in SLE (p=0.006) patients while no differences were observed with respect to RA patients. In all rhupus patients, at least one pathological finding was revealed by ultrasound (US) examination at wrist and/or hand joints; overall, rhupus patients presented higher scores in all the US parameters with respect to SLE patients, especially at hands; no statistically significant differences have been observed with respect to RA patients. Magnetic resonance (MR) revealed erosions in all rhupus patients with a concomitant bone edema in five patients. The cumulative erosive burden in rhupus patients was significantly higher than in SLE patients and similar to RA patients (SLE vs rhupus p=0.005); bone pathology distribution was also similar between rhupus patients and RA patients. These data suggest the importance of assessing joint involvement in SLE with advanced imaging techniques and of evaluating the presence of prognostic factors for joint disease severity in order to establish adequate disease monitoring and to institute early appropriate therapies to avoid late consequences of unrecognized concomitant rheumatoid arthritis (Amezcua-Guerra et al., 2006 [25]; Zhao et al., 2009 [26])., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a systemic necrotizing vasculitis affecting small to medium-sized vessels, and characterized by asthma, blood hypereosinophilia, and eosinophil-rich granulomatous inflammation of the respiratory tract. In the past few years the pathogenesis of the disease and its clinical manifestations have been clarified, fostering important advances in the treatment of CSS. Systemic corticosteroids are still considered the cornerstone of treatment. Many issues need to be addressed, such as how to maintain remission, prevent disease relapses, and treat refractory disease.
