Abstract

73Ge(n,γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300 keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8 keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30 keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. The new cross sections result in a substantial decrease of 73Ge produced in stars, which would explain the low isotopic abundance of 73Ge in the solar system. Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of 154Gd was measured from 1 eV to 300 keV in the experimental area located 185 m from the CERN n_TOF neutron spallation source, using a metallic sample of gadolinium, enriched to 67% in 154Gd. The capture measurement, performed with four C6D6 scintillation detectors, has been complemented by a transmission measurement performed at the GELINA time-of-flight facility (JRC-Geel), thus minimising the uncertainty related to sample composition. An accurate Maxwellian averaged capture cross section (MACS) was deduced over the temperature range of interest for s process nucleosynthesis modelling. We report a value of 880(50) mb for the MACS at kT=30 keV, significantly lower compared to values available in literature. The new adopted 154Gd(n,γ) cross section reduces the discrepancy between observed and calculated solar s-only isotopic abundances predicted by s-process nucleosynthesis models. Abstract

This work reports on accurate, high-resolution measurements of the 25Mg(n,γ)26Mg and 25Mg(n,tot) cross sections in the neutron energy range from thermal to about 300 keV, leading to a significantly improved 25Mg(n,γ)26Mg parametrization. The relevant resonances for n+25Mg were characterized from a combined R-matrix analysis of the experimental data. This resulted in an unambiguous spin/parity assignment of the corresponding excited states in 26Mg. With this information experimental upper limits of the reaction rates for 22Ne(α,n)25Mg and 22Ne(α,γ)26Mg were established, potentially leading to a significantly higher (α,n)/(α,γ) ratio than previously evaluated. The impact of these results has been studied for stellar models in the mass range 2 to 25 M⊙.

Abstract

In the measurement of neutron capture cross-sections of fissile isotopes, the fission channel is a source of background which can be removed efficiently using the so-called fission-tagging or fission-veto technique. For this purpose a new compact and fast fission chamber has been developed. The design criteria and technical description of the chamber are given within the context of a measurement of the 233U(n, ������) cross-section at the n_TOF facility at CERN, where it was coupled to the n_TOF Total Absorption Calorimeter. For this measurement the fission detector was optimized for time resolution, minimization of material in the neutron beam and for alpha-fission discrimination. The performance of the fission chamber and its application as a fission tagging detector are discussed., This work was partially supported by the French NEEDS/NACRE Project and by the European Commission within HORIZON2020 via the EURATOM Project EUFRAT.

Abstract

7th International Topical Meeting on Industrial Radiation and Radioisotope Measurement Application. Czech Tech univ, Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC. JUN 22-27, 2008, In 2002, an innovative neutron time-of-flight facility started operation at CERN: n_TOF. The main characteristics that make the new facility unique are the high instantaneous neutron flux, high resolution and wide energy range. Combined with state-of-the-art detectors and data acquisition system, these features have allowed to collect high accuracy neutron cross-section data on a variety of isotopes, many of which radioactive, of interest for Nuclear Astrophysics and for applications to advanced reactor technologies. A review of the most important results on capture and fission reactions obtained so far at n_TOF is presented, together with plans for new measurements related to nuclear industry.

7. Voltammetric methodology for the quality control and monitoring of sulfamethoxazole removal from water.

Abstract

Sulfamethoxazole is an antibiotic that is among the drugs most frequently found in waters around the world because of its habitual consumption and its high chemical stability that prevents it from being eliminated from the environment. In this study, an electroanalytical methodology based on differential pulse voltammetry is developed for the analysis of sulfamethoxazole at trace levels in water. After the optimization of the instrumental parameters a linear range from 6.59 to 96.27 μM was found with limits of detection and quantification of 1.98 and 6.59 μM, respectively, with an RSD below 6 %. Moreover, several validation studies involving different pH values, water samples and instrumentation-techniques were performed in order to ensure the robustness of the method. For this purpose, the peak area was used as quantitative variable since it is not affected by the pH of the medium even if there is any modification of this parameter during the experiments. Furthermore, the effect of other drug such as trimethoprim on the analytical signal of sulfamethoxazole was also evaluated. Once the method was developed it was tested on the quality control of Soltrim®, obtaining recoveries between 98 and 102 %. Lastly, the voltammetric method was applied for the in situ monitoring of sulfamethoxazole's removal from water samples, specifically by anodic oxidation and electro-Fenton treatments. While the former was coupled to an adsorption process, the latter was carried out with different iron sources including commercial medicines that can be found in wastewater. The problem of significant variation in pH during the treatment was solved by working with the peak area, and so obtaining valid and reliable kinetic data. 8. Screen-printed electrodes-based technology: Environmental application to real time monitoring of phenolic degradation by phytoremediation with horseradish roots.

Abstract

The following is a description of a simple strategy for monitoring phenolic pollutants from highly-contaminated water samples. These phenolic compounds are removed from tap water using horseradish roots (Raphanus sativus) that contain peroxidase as catalyst and H 2 O 2 to generate hydroxyl radicals. The later ( • OH) acts on the aromatic structure, causing them to degrade to non-toxic by-products. The tool used to follow up the evolution of the process is based on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) as electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (Epa at 0.047 V), m-cresol (Epa at 0.506 V) and 4-nitrophenol (Epa at 0.696 V) by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). This electroanalytical methodology enables close monitoring of the situation and rapid sensor response time. Furthermore, this direct methodology works for opaque and heterogeneous samples, as tap water with chopped horseradish roots, without any treatment of samples previously to the analysis. For better knowledge of the electrodic-transfer process, the electrochemical behavior of these phenolic compounds by cyclic voltammetry (CV) is also included. This simple methodology shows a low detection limit (below to 5 μM) and an excellent selectivity (peak potential separation between them up to 200 mV or greater) in a linear range of three orders of concentration (from 1-5 μM to 1 mM) for all of the analytes studied. The DPV responses of the phenolic compounds during the phytoremediation process are simultaneously monitored by this direct, cheap, reproducible (RSD < 2.3%) and rapid DPV-SPCE electroanalytical methodology. Portable device as electrochemical sensor with this optimized and validated technology can be applied for decentralized analysis, on-site assays and rapid screening purposes. Abstract

A simple strategy for covalent immobilizing DNA sequences, based on the formation of stable diazonized conducting platforms, is described. The electrochemical reduction of 4-nitrobenzenediazonium salt onto screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) in aqueous media gives rise to terminal grafted amino groups. The presence of primary aromatic amines allows the formation of diazonium cations capable to react with the amines present at the DNA capture probe. As a comparison a second strategy based on the binding of aminated DNA capture probes to the developed diazonized conducting platforms through a crosslinking agent was also employed. The resulting DNA sensing platforms were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The hybridization event with the complementary sequence was detected using hexaamineruthenium (III) chloride as electrochemical indicator. Finally, they were applied to the analysis of a 145-bp sequence from the human gene MRP3, reaching a detection limit of 210 pg μL(-1)., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

10. Determining alpha-tocopherol distributions between the oil, water, and interfacial regions of macroemulsions: novel applications of electroanalytical chemistry and the pseudophase kinetic model.

Abstract

The assumptions of the pseudophase model for chemical reactivity in homogeneous microemulsions are used to determine the distribution of alpha-tocopherol (TOC) in macroemulsions from changes in the observed rate constant (k(obs)) for reaction between 4-hexadecylarenediazonium ion (16-ArN2+) probe and TOC with increasing surfactant concentration. Two partition constants are needed to describe the distribution of TOC or other antioxidant (AO) or polar uncharged molecule between the oil and interfacial (P(O)(I)) and the water and interfacial (P(W)(I)) regions of stirred fluid emulsions. The observed rate constants are measured electrochemically. Here we report values of P(O)(I) and P(W)(I) for the distribution of TOC in octane/acidic water/C12E6 (hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether) and octane/acidic water/C12E4 (Brij 30, tetraethylene glycol dodecyl ether) emulsions obtained by fitting two kinetic data sets with an equation based on the pseudophase model and solving two equations in two unknowns. The partition constants were used to estimate the %TOC in each region of the emulsions. In 1:1 oil:water C12E6 emulsions, at 2% volume fraction of C12E6, 73% of TOC is in the interfacial region, 26% in the octane and about 1% in the water. The distributions of TOC in C12E4 emulsions are similar. The combined electrochemical-pseudophase model approach is applicable to any AO or other compound that reacts with 16-ArN2+. The second-order rate constant, k(I), for reaction in the interfacial region of the emulsions is also estimated from the kinetic data and is about the same for both surfactants (k(I) approximately 0.1-0.2 M(-1)s(-1)) showing that the medium properties of the interfacial regions of C12E6 and C12E4 emulsions are similar. Comparison of these rate constants for a variety of AOs may provide a scale of AO efficiency that is independent of AO distribution between the oil, interfacial and aqueous regions of emulsions.

11. Monitoring dediazoniation product formation by high-performance liquid chromatography after derivatization.

Abstract

A derivatization protocol that exploits the rapid reaction between arenediazonium ions and a suitable coupling agent followed by high-performance liquid chromatography analyses of the reaction mixture was employed to determine the product distribution, the rate constants for product formation and the association constant of 4-nitrobenzenediazonium, PNBD, ion with beta-cyclodextrin, beta-CD. The derivatization of PNBD with the coupling agent leads to the formation of a stable azo dye that prevents by-side reactions of PNBD with the solvents of the mobile phase, including water, or the metallic parts of the chromatographic system that would eventually lead to erroneous identification and quantification of dediazoniation products. The results show that in the presence of beta-CD, nitrobenzene is formed at the expense of 4-nitrophenol, which is the major product in its absence. The observed rate constants for the interaction between PNBD and beta-CD increase upon increasing [beta-CD] showing a saturation profile indicative of the formation of an inclusion complex between PNBD and beta-CD. By fitting the experimental data to a simplified Lineaweaver-Burk equation, the corresponding association constant and the maximum acceleration rate of beta-CD towards PNBD were estimated. The protocol is applicable under a variety of experimental conditions provided that the rate of the coupling reaction is much faster than that of dediazoniation.
