Arsenic-containing hydrocarbons (AsHC), a subclass of arsenolipids (AsL), have been proven to exert neuro- and cytotoxic effects in in-vitro and in-vivo studies and were shown to pass through biological barriers like the blood-brain barrier. However, there has been no connection as to the environmental relevance of these findings, meaning there is no study based on samples from free living animals that are exposed to these compounds. Here, we report the identification of two AsHC as well as 3 arsenosugar phospholipids (AsPL) in the brains of a pod of stranded long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) as well as the absence of arsenobetaine (AsB) which is often found to be a dominant As species in fish. We show data which suggests that there is an age-dependent accumulation of AsL in the brains of the animals. The results show that, in contrast to other organs, total arsenic as well as arsenolipids accumulate in an asymptotic pattern in the brains of the animals. Total As concentrations were found to range from 87 to 260 μg As/kg wet weight and between 0.6 and 27.6 μg As/kg was present in the form of AsPL958 in the brains of stranded pilot whales which was the most dominant lipophilic species present. The asymptotic relationship between total As, as well as AsPL, concentration in the brain and whale age may suggest that the accumulation of these species takes place prior to the full development of the blood-brain barrier in young whales. Impact of zero valent iron (Fe°) amendment on grain-yield (GY) and grain-As and Cd accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars Kilombero and Faya were investigated. Rice plants were amended with Fe° dosages of 0, 3.1, 6.2, and 12.4 g Fe°/kg soil in pots in greenhouse experiments under continuous flooding water regime. GY in each treatment was determined at maturity, grain-As and Cd and arsenic species concentrations were determined using ICP-MS and HPLC tandem ICP-MS respectively. Mean GY in Faya (5.5 ± 1.0 g/plant) and Kilombero (4.2 ± 0.4 g/plant) amended with at least 6.2 g Fe°/kg soil were at least 57% and 22% respectively significantly higher (F = 11; p = 0.003) than that in controls (3.7 ± 0.6 and 3.4 ± 0.4 g/plant). For As bioaccumulation, mean grain-As concentration in Faya T2 (≤227 ± 32 μg/kg) and Kilombero (≤218 ± 25 μg/kg) amended with at least 6.2 g Fe°/kg soil in were at least 83% and 77% respectively significantly lower (F = 7; p = 0.004) than that in controls (973 ± 43 μg/kg and 1278 ± 208 μg/kg). Mean grain-Cd concentrations in Faya (10 ± 2 μg/kg) and Kilombero (13 ± 3 μg/kg) amended with corresponding Fe° dosages were at least 26% and 39% significantly lower (F = 4; p < 0.05) than that in controls (18 ± 3 and 23 ± 1 μg/kg). Results indicated that amending Kilombero with at least 6.2 g/kg Fe° effectively optimally regulated both grain-As and Cd accumulation to values lower than the European Commission's legislated maximum contaminant limits (MCL) of 200 μg/kg without negating grain yield benefits. Studies aiming to limit bioaccumulation of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in rice grain has attracted global attention. In this study, simultaneous impact of zero valent iron (Fe⁰) and various water management regimes (continuous flooding (CF), alternate wetting and drying (AWD) and low water (LW)) on rice grain yield (GYM) and bioaccumulation of As and Cd in unpolished rice grain (URG) were investigated. Compared to respective control treatments, Fe⁰ significantly reduced GYM under LW by 32% (p < 0.001) and significantly increased GYM under AWD by 24% (p = 0.009; F = 5.9) but had no significant effect on GYM under CF water management regime (p > 0.05). The grain harvest index was significantly higher in Fe⁰ amended rice under AWD (67%; p < 0.001) and CF (35%; p = 0.001) compared to those without Fe⁰ amendment. Fe⁰ significantly reduced tAs in URG under LW by 32% (p < 0.017) and significantly increased tAs in URG under AWD by 37% (p = 0.007) but had no significant effect on tAs in URG under CF (p > 0.05). The Cd concentrations were significantly reduced by 51% (p = 0.002) and 61% (p < 0.003) in URG under LW and AWD respectively compared to the respective control treatments. The Dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in unpolished rice (URG) under AWD (+Fe⁰) was significantly higher (p < 0.01; F = 11.3) compared to that accumulated in URG under AWD(-Fe°). Despite increasing As accumulation in AWD water management, simultaneous use of AWD water management and Fe° increased grain yield, enhanced accumulation of less toxic methylated As in rice grains and accumulated low Cd concentrations comparable to that attainable with CF water management indicating that simultaneous use AWD and Fe° can be effective in controlling Cd accumulation in paddies highly contaminated with Cd., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Macroalgae (seaweed) has been shown to be an effective environmental indicator. We investigate the trace element chemistry of macroalgae samples from locations along the Firth of Forth and Forth Estuary in Scotland. The overall trend in elemental abundance (Os ≪ Re < Ag < U < Cd < Co < Ni < Pb < Cu < As < Zn ≪ I), and changes along the estuary (seawards: increase As, I, Cd, U, Re, Os; decrease Pb, Cu; mid-estuary peak Zn; based on certain species), are controlled by a number of factors, including: salinity, mixing and macroalgal species differences. Within the same macroalgal species, some elemental abundances (As, I, Pb, Cu, Cd and U) are affected by mixing between freshwater riverine and North Sea marine saltwater. Additional mixing of natural and anthropogenic inputs from the surrounding geology and industry are also observed, affecting Zn, Ni, Co, Re and Os. Macroalgae is also an increasingly popular food, with some species harvested in the Firth of Forth. Iodine (67-5061 ppm), lead (0.047-4.1 ppm) and cadmium (0.006-0.93 ppm) macroalgal abundances are at safe levels for human consumption (WHO limits). However, many samples exceed the American (3 ppm) and Australian (1 ppm) limits for inorganic arsenic in macroalgae, with values ranging 0-67 ppm. In most of the samples, soaking and cooking the macroalgae reduced the inorganic arsenic content to within the American and Australian limits. Cadmium and lead were determined in fruit and vegetable produce (~1300 samples) collected from a field and market basket study of locally grown produce from the South-West of Britain (Devon and Cornwall). These were compared with similarly locally grown produce from the North-East of Britain (Aberdeenshire). The concentrations of cadmium and lead in the market basket produce were compared to the maximum levels (ML) set by the European Union (EU). For cadmium 0.2% of the samples exceeded the ML, and 0.6% of the samples exceeded the ML for lead. The location of cadmium and lead in potatoes was performed using laser ablation ICP-MS. All tested samples exhibited higher lead concentrations, and most exhibited increased concentrations of cadmium in the potato skin compared to the flesh. Background: In Bihar state, India, the cure rate of antimonial compounds (eg, sodium stibogluconate) in the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has fallen from more than 85% to less than 50%. This reduction has been attributed to long-term, widespread misuse of antimonial drugs within the Indian private health-care system. We aimed to test the hypothesis that exposure to arsenic in drinking water in this region has resulted in antimony-resistant Leishmania parasites., Methods: L donovani parasites were serially passaged in mice exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of arsenic in drinking water. Arsenic concentrations in murine organs were quantified and the sensitivity of L donovani to sodium stibogluconate assessed at each passage. A retrospective field study on a cohort of antimony-treated patients with VL was performed in an arsenic-contaminated area of Bihar to assess risk of treatment failure and death in people exposed to arsenic., Findings: Arsenic accumulation in organs of exposed mice was proportional to exposure level. After five passages, isolated parasites were refractory to sodium stibogluconate in in-vitro drug sensitivity assays. Treatment of arsenic exposed, infected mice with this drug confirmed that these parasites retained resistance in vivo. In the field work study, 110 patients with VL treated with sodium stibogluconate, failure rate was 59%. Patients using well water with high mean arsenic concentrations had a higher risk of treatment failure than patients using wells with arsenic levels of less than 10 μg/L (odds ratio 1·78, 95% CI 0·7-4·6, p=0·23). 21 patients died, 16 directly as a result of their disease. Mean arsenic concentrations of more than 10 μg/L increased the risk of all-cause and VL-related mortality (hazard ratio 3·27, 95% CI 1·4-8·1, and 2·65, 0·96-7·65, respectively)., Interpretation: These data suggest that arsenic contamination might have contributed to the development of antimonial resistance in Leishmania parasites in Bihar. Our epidemiological study was underpowered and retrospective in nature, so firm conclusions cannot be made. Determination of the speciation of arsenic in groundwaters, using cathodic stripping voltammetry (CSV), is severely hampered by high levels of iron and manganese. Experiments showed that the interference is eliminated by addition of EDTA, making it possible to determine the arsenic speciation on-site by CSV. This work presents the CSV method to determine As(III) in high-iron or -manganese groundwaters in the field with only minor sample treatment. The method was field-tested in West-Bengal (India) on a series of groundwater samples. Total arsenic was subsequently determined after acidification to pH 1 by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). Comparative measurements by ICP-MS as reference method for total As, and by HPLC for its speciation, were used to corroborate the field data in stored samples. Most of the arsenic (78±0.02%) was found to occur as inorganic As(III) in the freshly collected waters, in accordance with previous studies. The data shows that the modified on-site CSV method for As(III) is a good measure of water contamination with As. The EDTA was also found to be effective in stabilising the arsenic speciation for longterm sample storage at room temperature. Without sample preservation, in water exposed to air and sunlight, the As(III) was found to become oxidised to As(V), and Fe(II) oxidised to Fe(III), removing the As(V) by adsorption on precipitating Fe(III)-hydroxides within a few hours., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
