Pectin, a polysaccharide found in plant cell walls, is characterized by a high abundance of hydroxyl groups and carboxylic acid groups, which results in a strong affinity for water and limits its suitability as a film material. This study aimed to modulate the esterification degree of PEC films by adjusting the concentration of acetic anhydride, and assess the impact of acetic anhydride esterification modification on the properties of the resultant PEC films. The results demonstrated successful grafting of acetic anhydride onto the galacturonic acid ring in the PEC molecule through the esterification process. The hydrophobicity, thermal stability, barrier properties, and mechanical properties of the esterified PEC films were investigated. Among the various concentrations tested, the E-PEC-0.25 film exhibited the highest contact angle of 103.46° and tensile strength of 33.44 MPa, showcasing optimal performance. The E-PEC-0.1 film achieved the highest esterification degree of 0.94 and elongation at a break of 21.11 %. It also exhibited the transparency of 11.66 and the lowest water vapor transmission rate of 0.56 g·mm/(m 2 ·h·kpa). Additionally, TGA and DSC tests revealed enhanced thermal stability of the esterification-prepared films. The control of laccase-catalyzed efficiency often relies on the utilization of modifying enzyme molecules and shielding agents. However, their elevated costs or carcinogenicity led to the inability for large-scale application. To address this concern, we found that a low-cost protein from soybean meal can reduce lignin's ineffective adsorption onto enzymes for improving the efficiency of thymol grafting to lignosulfonate. The results demonstrated that by adding 0.5 mg/mL of additional soybean meal protein, the thymol reaction ratio of the modified lignosulfonate (L-0.5 S) significantly boosted from 18.1 % to 35.0 %, with the minimal inhibitory concentrations of the L-0.5 S against Aspergillus niger dramatically improved from 12.5 mg/mL to 3.1 mg/mL. Multiple characterization methods were employed to better understand the benefit of the modification under the addition of the soybean meal protein. The CO and R 1 -O group content increased from 20.5 % to 37.8 % and from 65.1 % to 75.5 %, respectively. The proposed potential reaction mechanism was further substantiated by the physicochemical properties. The incorporation of soybean meal effectively mitigated the non-specific adsorption of lignosulfonate, resulting in a reduction of the surface area of lignin from 235.0 to 139.2 m 2 /g. The utilization of soybean meal as a cost-effective and efficient shielding agent significantly enhanced the efficiency of subsequent enzyme catalysis. The limited anti-fungal activity of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) has been a challenge in its direct application as a bamboo preservative. To address this issue, the cinnamaldehyde modification of EHL was carried out to introduce anti-fungal structures into the lignin matrix, effectively enhancing its anti-fungal activity. The results demonstrated that the minimal inhibitory concentrations of the modified lignin (EHL-DC) against Aspergillus niger significantly improved from 16 mg/mL to 1 mg/mL, with comparable enhancements in anti-fungal activity against other fungi. As a result of the modification, the EHL-DC is more prone to interact with fungal cell membranes, contributing to a roughened, shrunken hyphal surface and a decrease in mycelial biomass. Multiple characterization methods were employed to better grapple with the EHL-DC chemical changes. The nitrogen content increased from 2.3 % to 8.3 %, and alterations in elemental compositions further support the proposed reaction mechanism and its role in enhancing EHL's anti-fungal activity. Sulfate in wastewater can be reduced to sulfide and its impact on the stability of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is still unclear. In this study, the metabolic changes and subsequent recovery of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) were investigated at different sulfide concentrations. The results showed that the metabolic activity of PAOs and GAOs was mainly related to H 2 S concentration. Under anaerobic conditions, the catabolism of PAOs and GAOs was promoted at H 2 S concentrations below 79 mg/L S and 271 mg/L S, respectively, and inhibited above these concentrations; whereas anabolism was consistently inhibited in the presence of H 2 S. The phosphorus (P) release was also pH-dependent due to the intracellular free Mg 2+ efflux from PAOs. H 2 S was more destructive to the esterase activity and membrane permeability of PAOs than those of GAOs and prompted intracellular free Mg 2+ efflux of PAOs, resulting in worse aerobic metabolism and subsequent recovery of PAOs than GAOs. Additionally, sulfides facilitated the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), especially tightly bound EPS. The amount of EPS in GAOs was significantly higher than that in PAOs. Titanium salt coagulant, as a new type of water treatment agent, has been widely studied, but most researches do not consider its effect on the biological treatment. In this study, different doses of TiCl 4 were added to the biological phosphorus removal (BPR) system to investigate the impact of TiCl 4 on BPR. The results showed that the addition of TiCl 4 not only significantly reduced the phosphorus concentration in effluent (below 0.5 mg/L), but also kept it stable. Moreover, the sedimentation performance of activated sludge was improved, which was superior to the control group. According to the results of flow cytometry (FCM), a small amount of TiCl 4 significantly improved the bioactivities, but excessive dosage caused inhibition. When the dosage of TiCl 4 below 20 mg/L, polyphosphate accumulating metabolism (PAM) was strengthened. In addition, the richness of microbial community and the relative abundance of Candidatus Accumulibacter clades also increased. However, when the dosage reached 60 mg/L, the relative abundance of Candidatus Competibacter increased and the BPR system was deteriorated. Tetrasphaera are polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) that play an important role in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) from wastewater. The effect of a wide range of temperature changes (1-30 °C) on phosphorus removal, metabolism and clade-level community structure of Tetrasphaera-dominated PAOs was investigated. At 10 °C, the bioactivities of Tetrasphaera-dominated communities were obviously inhibited and the EBPR efficiency was only 73 %. Yet at 20-30 °C, EBPR efficiency reached 99 % and the relative abundance of Tetrasphaera was up to 90 %. The temperature variation changed the community distribution of Tetrasphaera clades, which was possibly a main reason for EBPR performance. Amino acids and PHA with different contents were intracellular metabolite of Tetrasphaera-dominated communities during phosphorus release and uptake at different temperatures. Moreover, Tetrasphaera fermented protein and amino acids and released VFAs. The N and O isotope fractionation effects in NO 2 - -N oxidation and nitrification performance of an activated sludge system treating municipal wastewater are unknown. The nitrifying sludge was cultured under different temperature (33 ± 1 °C, 25 ± 1 °C,and 18 ± 1 °C) and dissolved oxygen (DO: 0.5-1 mg/L, 3-4 mg/L, and 7-8 mg/L). The inverse kinetic isotope effects of N and O ( 15 ε NO2 and 18 ε NO2 ) were -0.62‰ to -7.08‰ and -0.87‰ to -1.68‰ in the process of NO 2 - -N oxidation, respectively. 15 ε NO3 gradually increased with increasing of temperature ( 15 ε NO3 - 33 °C (14.49‰) >  15 ε NO3 - 25 °C (10.43‰) >  15 ε NO3 - 18 °C (7.3‰)), while the 15 ε NO3 : 18 ε NO3 was maintained at 1.02-5.32. The increase of temperature improved the nitrification activity, which promoted the fractionation effect, but the change of DO did not highlight this difference. The exchange of NO 2 - -N and H 2 O (X NOB ) was 32.5 ± 1.5%, and the kinetic isotope effect of H 2 O participating in the reaction ( 18 ε k, H2O, 2 ) was 22.57 ± 1.79‰, indicating that H 2 O was involved in the NO 2 - -N oxidation rather than DO. In summary, the elevated temperature enhanced the fractionation effect of NO 2 - -N oxidation. The immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) targeting on PD-1/PD-L1 has shown remarkable promise in treating cancers. However, the low response rate and frequently observed severe side effects limit its broad benefits. It is partially due to less understanding of the biological regulation of PD-L1. Here, we systematically and comprehensively summarized the regulation of PD-L1 from nuclear chromatin reorganization to extracellular presentation. In PD-L1 and PD-L2 highly expressed cancer cells, a new TAD (topologically associating domain) (chr9: 5,400,000-5,600,000) around CD274 and CD273 was discovered, which includes a reported super-enhancer to drive synchronous transcription of PD-L1 and PD-L2. The re-shaped TAD allows transcription factors such as STAT3 and IRF1 recruit to PD-L1 locus in order to guide the expression of PD-L1. After transcription, the PD-L1 is tightly regulated by miRNAs and RNA-binding proteins via the long 3'UTR. At translational level, PD-L1 protein and its membrane presentation are tightly regulated by post-translational modification such as glycosylation and ubiquitination. In addition, PD-L1 can be secreted via exosome to systematically inhibit immune response. Achieving enhanced biological phosphorus removal dominated by Tetrasphaera utilizing waste activated sludge (WAS) as carbon source could solve the problems of insufficient carbon source and excessive discharge of WAS in biological phosphorus removal. Up to now, the sludge reduction ability of Tetrasphaera remained largely unknown. Furthermore, the difference between traditional sludge fermentation and sludge fermentation dominated by Tetrasphaera was still unclear. In this study, two different sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated. WAS from SBR-parent was utilized as sole carbon source to enrich Tetrasphaera with the relative abundance of 91.9% in SBR-Tetrasphaera. PO 4 3- -P removal and sludge reduction could simultaneously be achieved. The effluent concentration of PO 4 3- -P was 0, and the sludge reduction efficiency reached about 44.14% without pretreatment of sludge. Cell integrity detected by flow cytometry, the increase of DNA concentration in the sludge supernatant and decrease of particle size of activated sludge indicated that cell death and lysis occurred in sludge reduction dominated by Tetrasphaera. Stable structure of activated sludge was also damaged in this process, which led to the sludge reduction. By analyzing the excitation-emission matrix spectra of extracellular polymeric substances and the changes of carbohydrate and protein concentration, this study proved that slowly biodegradable organics (e.g., soluble microbial byproduct, tyrosine and tryptophan aromatic protein) could be better hydrolyzed and acidized to volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in sludge fermentation dominated by Tetrasphaera than traditional sludge fermentation, which provided carbon source for biological nutrients removal and saved operation cost in wastewater treatment., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. The dual isotope fractionation of nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) is an effective way to track the transformation of NO 3 - -N in biological denitrification process. The Sulfur autotrophic denitrification combined with the different concentrations of S 2 O 3 2- was investigated using the dual isotope fractionation of nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) to reveal the nitrogen removal mechanism of the activated sludge. Based on successful autotrophic denitrification incubation, the modified Logistic model responded to the short-term effects of S 2 O 3 2- addition on NO 3 - -N removal and SO 4 2- generation. Under the S 2 O 3 2- addition of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 times of the incubation stage (49.29 mg/L-394.32 mg/L), the fractionation effect of N in NO 3 - -N ( 15 ε NO3 ) decreased from 8.74 ± 1.81‰ to 2.08 ± 0.06‰, and the fractionation effect of O in NO 3 - -N ( 18 ε NO3 ) declined from 11.34 ± 0.46‰ to 5.48 ± 0.46‰. The 15 ε NO3 / 18 ε NO3 was maintained at 0.46-0.94, indicating a negative correlation between addition amount and isotope effect, and the addition of high concentrations of S 2 O 3 2- was not suitable for system stabilization. Moreover, the 18 O-labeled H 2 O (δ 18 O H2O ) tests significantly proved the presence of O exchange between NO 2 - -N/NO 3 - -N and H 2 O (67%/97%) during the nitrogen removal process, while the reoxidation of NO 2 - -N was explored in the autotrophic denitrification. Many of the most invasive plants are clonal, and clonal integration has been proposed as an important mechanism promoting invasiveness. When the availabilities of two essential resources are negatively correlated in space, clonal integration may benefit clonal plants through division of labor. We hypothesized that environments with reciprocal patchiness of light and soil water may induce division of labor, and nutrient addition may increase both the division of labor and the benefits of clonal integration. To test this, we grew pairs of connected and disconnected ramets of the clonal invader Mikania micrantha under negative spatial covariance of light and soil water such that the proximal ramets were grown under high light and low soil water conditions and the distal ramets were grown under low light and high soil water conditions. In half of the ramet pairs, both ramets of a pair received a nutrient addition treatment. The results showed that connection decreased the root to shoot ratio in proximal ramets and increased it in distal ramets, indicating that division of labor was induced. In addition, connection increased the root to shoot ratio of distal ramets more under high soil nutrient conditions than under low soil nutrient conditions, indicating that nutrient addition increased the division of labor. Connection increased plant biomass at the whole clonal fragment level, and this increase was larger under high soil nutrient conditions than under low soil nutrient conditions. This study showed, for the first time, that in environments with reciprocal patchiness of two essential resources, the capacity for division of labor and its influence on plant performance may depend on the availability of a third essential resource. Attributable risk is an important indicator for planning and evaluating public health interventions. However, most current measures of the attributable risk of air pollutants have not considered temporal relationships between exposure and risk. More importantly, limited information is available regarding the attributable risk due to ambient air pollutants in basin regions like the Sichuan Basin, China. To quantify the association between PM 10 and deaths in the Basin region, we used a measure proposed recently within the framework of the distributed lag non-linear model to estimate the attributable risk in Chengdu, China. Meanwhile, we examined the association between PM 10 and years of life lost (YLL). Our analysis showed that population-attributable fractions for non-accidental, respiratory, and cardiovascular mortality were 0.569% (95% CI: -3.474%, 4.374%), 0.695% (95% CI: -5.260%, 6.457%), and 0.631% (95% CI: -6.973%, 7.390%), respectively. On average, a 1μg/m 3 increase in PM 10 was associated with cumulative increases of 0.26893, 0.30437, and 0.21924 YLL for non-accidental, respiratory, and cardiovascular mortality, respectively, referring to 20μg/m 3 . In addition, we found an inverse U-shaped pattern for the cumulative risk with 350μg/m 3 as the reverse point. With a 1μg/m 3 increase in PM 10 , YLL changed more significantly than mortality. The effect modification of meteorological factors on the association between ambient Sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ) and mortality is critical for designing intervention policy. Existing studies did not result in consistent conclusions on the effect modification, and Years of life lost (YLLs) was rarely used as a health impact indicator to examine the modifying effect. This study aims to estimate the mean air temperature and relative humidity modification effects on the impact of SO 2 on daily mortality and YLLs in Chengdu, China. Mortality, YLLs, air pollution and meteorological data were collected for 2011-2014. Three analytical approaches based on generalized additive models (GAMs) were used, including bivariate response surface model, product term model, and stratification model. We found that the effects of SO 2 on mortality and YLLs depended on temperature at various lags, but did not depend on relative humidity. SO 2 exhibited larger adverse effects on mortality in high temperature level (22.8-29.4°C) days than in low temperature level (-0.3-9.3°C) days, with a 10μg/m 3 increment in SO 2 , non-accidental death increased by 0.8% (0.001, 0.015)at low temperature level, but increased by 1.4% (0.005, 0.024) at high temperature level. On the contrary, SO 2 showed greater adverse effects on YLLs in low temperature days than in high temperature days, with a 10μg/m 3 increment in SO 2 , non-accidental YLL increased by 40.580 (31.478, 49.682) at high temperature level, but increased by -2.703 (-14.668, 9.261) at low temperature level. We concluded that the effect of SO 2 on mortality and YLLs may depend on temperature in Chengdu, China. Our results highlight the importance of considering the interaction between SO 2 and temperature on health outcomes in future research.
