Moso bamboo is an essential forest resource in China, covering the largest area and stock of any bamboo species. Four provinces (Fujian, Hunan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi) each have more than 70 million hectares, collectively accounting for 80 % of the total area of Moso bamboo in China. We named these four provinces as the core area for Moso bamboo and the remaining area in other provinces as non-core area. There has been limited research on how climate, topography, and soil factors collectively affect Moso bamboo biomass in both the core and non-core areas. To better understand the variations, data on DBH and individual biomass were gathered from 348 plots from 25 literature sources and a total of 18 plots from four field surveys conducted in 2019. We found evidence that the above-ground biomass of Moso bamboo forests is influenced by a combination of climate, soil nutrients and topography, with different factors playing a more significant role in the core and non-core areas. Moso bamboo had higher individual above-ground biomass in the core area compared to the non-core area. In the core area, above-ground biomass of Moso bamboo was more influenced by climate than by soil nutrients. In this area, annual minimum temperature had a negative effect on above-ground biomass, while precipitation had a positive effect. In contrast, soil total nitrogen had the largest positive effect on above-ground biomass in non-core area. These findings may contribute to the development of a future biomass model for Moso bamboo forests.

The biliary epithelial cells release CC chemokine receptor 6 (CCR6) ligand 20 (CCL20), leading to recruitment of CCR6+ T cells and subsequent infiltration into the biliary epithelium in primary biliary cholangitis patients. Previous genome-wide multi-national meta-analysis, including our Han Chinese cohort, showed significant association of CCR6 and CCL20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with PBC. We report here that significantly associated SNPs, identified in the CCR6 locus based on our Han Chinese genome-wide association study, can be separated into “protective” and “risk” groups, but only “risk” SNPs were confirmed using a separate Han Chinese PBC cohort. Only weak association of CCL20 SNPs was observed in Han Chinese PBC cohorts. Fine-mapping and logistical analysis identified a previously defined functional variant that, leads to increased CCR6 expression, which contributed to increased genetic susceptibility to PBC in Han Chinese cohort.

Objective: Understanding the characteristics of alveolar bone resorption in an East Asian population after maxillary incisor extraction and providing a reference for implant treatment plans. Study design: Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) data of 125 East Asian patients with unilateral extraction of maxillary incisors for 3 months were collected. The alveolar bone width and height in the extraction sites were measured and compared with the corresponding contralateral sites. Results: The differences in alveolar bone width between the extraction site and contralateral site were as follows: 4.11 mm, 2.68 mm, and 2.09 mm (3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm apical from CEJ of the contralateral tooth). Data are expressed as the median. The horizontal resorption ratio of alveolar bone was 49.94 %, 31.5 %, and 24.46 %. The difference in alveolar bone height was 0.78 mm. The vertical resorption ratio was 7.78 %. The resorption did not differ significantly between sexes and was not significantly affected by tooth positions. Conclusions: In the studied East Asian population, significant horizontal and vertical alveolar bone resorption occurs after natural healing of maxillary incisor extraction for 3 months. The closer to the alveolar ridge crest, the more significant the horizontal resorption, resulting in an “inverted triangle” shape residual alveolar bone.

With the swift advancement of online teaching in vocational education, an increasing number of web-based course materials are being made available to students, granting them the freedom to select resources that suit their personal needs. To optimize the effectiveness of artificial intelligence-enabled smart vocational education, this study presents a course recommendation model centered on learning behaviors and interests. The model utilizes short-term preferences reconstruction behavior contribution to identify fluctuations in learners' interests in real-time. A model for recommending courses is proposed based on short-term preferences and enhancements to learning behavior. Its purpose is to tackle the issue of generalization arising from sparsity and weak correlation in learning behavior. The outcomes demonstrated the model put forth in the study achieved higher Hit Rate (HR) and Normalized Discounted Cumulative Gain (NDCG) values in comparison experiments with multiple models. Hence, this suggested that creating a novel component of historical learning behavior, powered by dynamic interest factors, could resolve the issue of changing learning interests and enhance the efficacy of course recommendation models. Furthermore, the introduction of a correlation mapping network enables the forward mapping transformation from weak to strong learning behavior, thus improving and optimizing input for the agent strategy, reducing data sparsity, and enhancing the performance and generalization of the course recommendation model.

Objectives: Antibodies to gp210 and sp100 are specific and unique anti-nuclear autoantibodies (ANAs) associated with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). Importantly the presence of anti-gp210 and anti-sp100 responses is indicative of poor clinical outcomes. However, the utility of measuring titers of these antibodies remains unclear. Materials and methods: Using the in-house purified gp210 (HSA108-C18) and sp100 (amino acid position 296–386), we quantitatively measured serum autoantibodies to gp210 and sp100 using chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) in a very large cohort of 390 patients with PBC, including 259 cases with no prior ursodesoxycholic acid (UDCA) treatment and 131 cases with UDCA treatment. We also analyzed serial changes in anti-gp210 and anti-sp100 levels in 245 sequential samples from 88 patients. Results: In our cross-sectional analysis, we detected anti-gp210 immunoglobulin G (IgG) and anti-sp100 IgG autoantibodies in 129 out of 390 (33.1%) and 80 out of 390 (20.5%) PBC patients, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that serum IgG (st.β = 0.35, P = 0.003) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) (st.β = 0.23, P = 0.042) levels at baseline were independently associated with anti-gp210 concentrations. In serial testing, we observed significant fluctuations in anti-gp210 antibody levels. These fluctuations reflected responsiveness to UDCA therapy, particularly in anti-gp210-positive patients with initially lower concentrations in the stages of disease. Conclusions: Our study reflects that quantitative changes of anti-gp210 antibody are indicative of UDCA responses. There is a great need for newer metrics in PBC and we suggest that a more detailed and longer study of these unique ANAs is warranted.

Introduction: Although previous studies investigated the potential adverse effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on biological age acceleration and aging-related diseases, the mixed effect of multiple types of EDCs on biological age acceleration, including its potential underlying mechanism, remains unclear. Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used to analyze biological age measures, including Klemera-Doubal method biological age (KDM-BA), phenotypic age, and homeostatic dysregulation (HD). Weight quantile sum (WQS) regression was performed to screen biological age-related EDCs (BA-EDCs) and assess the mixed effect of BA-EDCs on biological age acceleration and aging-related disease. Targets of BA-EDCs were obtained from three databases, while heart aging-related genes were obtained from the Aging Anno database. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) network and MCODE algorithm were applied to identify potential interactions between BA-EDC targets and heart aging-related genes. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis were performed to identify related pathways. Results: This cross-sectional study included 1,439 participants. A decile increase in BA-EDCs co-exposure was associated with 0.31 years and 0.17 years of KDM-BA and phenotypic age acceleration, respectively. The mixed effect of BA-EDCs was associated with an increased prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Vitamins C and E demonstrated a significant interaction effect on the association between BA-EDCs and KDM-BA acceleration. PPI network and functional enrichment analysis indicated that the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications was significantly enriched. Conclusion: Our results showed that the co-exposure effect of BA-EDCs was associated with biological age acceleration and ASCVD, with the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway being the underlying mechanism. Vitamins C and E may also be an actionable target for preventing EDC-induced biological aging.

Foam ceramics were prepared by using 80 wt.% sand shale, 8 wt.% coal fly ash, 8 wt.% steel slag and 4 wt.% magnesite as raw materials and 0.3 wt.% SiC as foam agent. Effects of firing temperature and holding time on performance and phases of foam ceramics were investigated. Grey system theory was used to explore the correlation between pore structure parameters and thermal conductivity. The foam ceramics sintered at 1160 °C for 50 min exhibit the optimal comprehensive properties: bulk density of 0.651 g/cm3, flexural strength of 4.75 MPa, total porosity of 73.58%, closed porosity of 54.16%, and thermal conductivity of 0.081 W/(m·K). The Micro-CT results show that the pores with the average pore volume of 1.083 mm3 are relatively independent and uniform; and the pore wall thickness presents a normal distribution, which is conducive to improving the properties. Among the pore structure parameters, the fractal dimension has the greatest correlation with the thermal conductivity of foam ceramics.

This study aimed to investigate the interaction between maltodextrin/starch of different molecular weight distributions and soy protein isolate (SPI)–wheat gluten (WG) matrix during high-moisture extrusion. Two maltodextrins (dextrose equivalent (DE): 10 and 20) and wheat starch were extruded with SPI–WG blend in a system of 65, 70, and 75% moisture to investigate their effects on texture and thermal stability. Incorporating 5% maltodextrin (DE10) in the SPI–WG matrix improved the fiber structure and thermal stability. When wheat starch was thoroughly gelatinized during subsequent sterilization, the fiber structure and thermal stability were also improved. It was found that the plasticization caused by small-molecular weight saccharides and enhanced phase separation caused by large-molecular weight saccharides changed the melting temperature of blends and significantly improved the texture and thermal stability of extrudates.

Purpose: To explore which restoration strategy generates the most favorable stress distribution in an endodontically-treated maxillary first molar with mesial-occlusal-distal-palatal defect. Methods: Models with one post in palatal canal (PP), each post in palatal and distobuccal canals (PDP), each post in palatal and mesiobuccal canals (PMP), and each post in all canals (PDMP) were established for an endodontically-treated maxillary first molar with mesial-occlusal-distal-palatal defect either with fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) post or gold alloy cast (GAC) post. A 400-N vertical force and a 225-N lateral force were respectively applied. The Mohr-Coulomb stress ratio (σMC ratio) in the residual tooth structure (RTS), the resin cement, and the crowns, the tensile stress (σt) and compressive stress (σc) in the FRC posts, the von-Mises stress ratio (σvM ratio) in the GAC post-and-cores, and the σt and shear stress (σs) at the adhesive interfaces were calculated using finite element analysis. Results: FRC posts generated lower σMC ratio than GAC posts in the RTS (0.3274–0.3643 vs. 0.3399–0.4118). Among the FRC post groups, the PDMP group got the lowest σs at the dentin-post interface (14.92 MPa) and the abutment-crown interface (8.242 MPa) under vertical loading, as well as the lowest σMC ratio in the RTS (0.3381) and the lowest σs at the dentin-post interface (38.00 MPa) under lateral loading. Conclusions: From the point of stress distribution, placing FRC posts in the palatal, distobuccal, and mesiobuccal canals is the optimal strategy in restoring a severely damaged maxillary first molar, provided that lateral occlusal force is reduced.

Objective: Right-sided cardiac thrombus is rare and may be caused by venous thromboembolism, in association with medical devices or stasis of blood in atrial fibrillation (AF) and cardiomyopathies. Complications include pulmonary embolism (PE) and paradoxical stroke. Current data are limited and mostly from case series and PE registries. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, echocardiographic features, treatments, and outcomes of right-sided cardiac thrombus patients. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study of 97 consecutive patients with right-sided cardiac thrombus detected on echocardiography. We studied co-morbidities, predisposing factors, thrombus characteristics, and therapeutic interventions and assessed their associations with the development of PE, paradoxical stroke, circulatory collapse, and all-cause mortality. Results: The mean age was 58.7 years, and 55/97 (56.7%) of the participants were female. Ischemic heart disease (IHD), heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and malignancy were common co-morbidities. Right atrial (RA) thrombus was often associated with medical devices, while right ventricular (RV) thrombus was more commonly associated with cardiomyopathy. Thrombus mobility did not affect embolic events but was associated with greater short-term mortality. On multivariable analysis, anticoagulation (HR 0.25, 95% CI 0.09–0.68) and thrombus resolution (HR 0.28, 95% CI 0.13–0.62) were associated with greater survival. Conclusion: Right-sided cardiac thrombus is rare but may have potentially life-threatening complications such as PE and paradoxical stroke. Further research is needed to determine the optimal therapeutic strategies for this poorly studied population.

Introduction: The burden of cognitive impairment in heart failure (HF) patients is significant and leads to longer hospital stay, higher readmission rates, and increased mortality. This review seeks to synthesize the available studies to determine the prevalence and incidence of cognitive impairment and dementia in HF patients. Methods: PubMed, Embase, PsychoINFO, and Cochrane databases were systematically searched from their inception through to May 3, 2021. Study and population characteristics, total patients with HF, prevalence of cognitive impairment and dementia in HF patients, and cognitive assessment tool were abstracted by two reviewers. Results: In HF patients, the overall prevalence for cognitive impairment and dementia was 41.42% (CI) and 19.79% (dementia), respectively. We performed a meta-regression analysis, which demonstrated that the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia increased with age. Discussion: Further research should investigate whether HF accelerates the rate of cognitive decline and the progression of dementia.

The shortage of electric energy in the supply process and supply interruption will not only directly affect the production level of all walks of life, but also affect the normal life order, and cause adverse effects on the development of the whole society. In order to ensure the stable operation of the system under the premise of ensuring safety, the actual control system is often affected by constraints. In this paper, the intelligent control strategy based on supervised machine learning is used to restrict the output of the system. The back stepping method and Lyapunov method are used to design the control, and then the supervised machine learning sensor of multi-machine power system under the constraint condition is optimized and improved. By introducing the k-class function adjusted according to the error, the system gain is automatically corrected. The simulation results show that the designed controllers can ensure that the output of the speed difference of the system is in the constrained range. Through comparison, it is concluded that the constrained fuzzy adaptive controller can further improve the rotation speed of the speed difference, reduce the vibration amplitude of the speed difference, and achieve better results.

Summary: Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common chronic liver disease, and among the non-invasive tests, controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) have shown better diagnostic performance in NAFLD. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the performance of CAP and LSM for assessing steatosis and fibrosis in NAFLD. Methods: We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases for relevant articles published up to February 13th, 2022, and selected studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and evaluated the quality of evidence. Then we pooled sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), and area under receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves. A random effect model was applied regardless of heterogeneity. Meta-regression analysis and subgroup analysis were performed to explore heterogeneity, and Fagan plot analysis was used to evaluate clinical utility. This meta-analysis was completed in Nanjing, Jiangsu and registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022309965). Findings: A total of 10537 patients from 61 studies were included in our meta-analysis. The AUROC of CAP were 0·924, 0·794 and 0·778 for steatosis grades ≥ S1, ≥ S2 and = S3, respectively, and the AUROC of LSM for detecting fibrosis stages ≥ F1, ≥ F2, ≥ F3, and = F4 were 0·851, 0·830, 0·897 and 0·925, respectively. Subgroup analysis revealed that BMI ≥ 30 kg/m² had lower accuracy for diagnosing S ≥ S1, ≥ S2 than BMI

Chronic diabetic wounds affect the quality of life of patients, resulting in significant social and economic burdens on both individuals and the health care system. Although treatment methods for chronic diabetic wounds have been explored, there remains a lack of effective treatment strategies; therefore, alternative strategies must be explored. Recently, the abnormal expression of non-coding RNA in diabetic wounds has received widespread attention since it is an important factor in the development of diabetic wounds. This article reviews the regulatory role of three common non-coding RNAs (microRNA [miRNA], long non-coding RNA [lncRNA], and circular RNA [circRNA]) in diabetic wounds and discusses the diagnosis, treatment potential, and challenges of non-coding RNA in diabetic wounds. This article provides insights into new strategies for diabetic wound diagnosis and treatment at the genetic and molecular levels.

The present study was conducted to characterize microRNA-200c (miR-200c) and its regulators in adipogenic differentiation, obesity, and periodontitis in obese subjects (PiOSs), and to determine the therapeutic efficacy of plasmid DNA encoding miR-200c as a treatment for PiOSs. We report that highly expressed miR-200c in gingival tissues was downregulated in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice and during adipogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (hBMSCs). Local injection of Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (Pg-LPS) in the maxilla interdental gingiva of DIO mice reduced miR-200c in gingival and adipose tissues and induced periodontal inflammation associated with systemic elevation of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and impaired glucose tolerance. The inhibitory functions of Pg-LPS and IL-6 on miR-200c and their effectiveness on Zeb1 were confirmed in vitro. Injection of naked plasmid DNA encoding miR-200c into the gingiva effectively rescued miR-200c downregulation, prevented periodontal and systemic inflammation, and alleviated the impaired glucose metabolism in obese mice with LPS-induced periodontitis. Increased circulating exosomal miR-200c and its function on suppressing proinflammatory cytokines and adipogenesis explained the mechanism(s) of gingival application of miR-200c in attenuating systemic inflammation in PiOSs. These results demonstrated that miR-200c reduced by Pg-LPS and IL-6 in periodontitis and obesity might lead to the pathogenesis of PiOSs, and upregulation of miR-200c in the gingiva presents a therapeutic approach for PiOSs.

ABSTRACT: Lagotis brachystachya Maxim (L. brachystachya) is an herb widely used in traditional Tibetan medicine. In the present study, the antibacterial activity of L. brachystachya extract to extended-spectrum-lactamases (ESBLs)-producing E. coli was determined by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) methods as well as time-kill curve assay. Meanwhile, the biofilm inhibition and eradication effects of L. brachystachya extract on the ESBLs-producing E. coli were evaluated by crystal violet staining, and further confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that L. brachystachya extract exhibited moderate antibacterial activity, with diameter of inhibition zones varying from 15.4 to 20.3 mm, and the MIC and MBC values were 6.25 to 25 mg/mL and 12.5 to 100 mg/mL, respectively. Time-kill curve showed that 4 × MIC level of L. brachystachya extract concentration of was able to kill 99.9% of ESBLs-producing E. coli after 16 h treatment. The biofilm inhibition rate and eradication rate for the ESBLs-producing E. coli were 35.66 to 79.91% and 22.18 to 56.21% at MIC level of extract concentration, respectively. CLSM images showed that the biofilm became thinner as the ESBLs-producing E. coli isolate exposed to L. brachystachya extract with a concentration-dependent manner from 1/4 × MIC to MIC compared with the control isolate. SEM images indicated that L. brachystachya extract at 1/2 × MIC and MIC levels could evidently inhibit the biofilm formation or eradicate the mature biofilms. The effect of L. brachystachya highlights its potential of antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against the ESBLs-producing E. coli.

High level of carbohydrate in aquafeed could achieve cost-sparing effect, but it may cause adverse effects on flesh quality of aquatic products. An eight-week trial was conducted to investigate whether oligosaccharides-supplementation, including Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and xylo-oligosaccharide (XOS), could systematically improve the growth performance, texture characteristics and nutrition composition of Nile tilapia fed with high-carbohydrate diet. The results indicated that GOS-supplementation improved the amino acid composition, while XOS-supplementation showed beneficial effects on growth performance. High-carbohydrate diet had adverse effects on fillet texture, while oligosaccharide-supplementation regulated the expression of muscle development-related genes to help restoring muscle texture properties. Furthermore, either high-carbohydrate or addition of oligosaccharides could change the intestinal microbiota composition and their metabolites. Further correlation analysis suggested that intestinal microbiota may account for the improvement in fish growth condition and texture characteristics. Application of oligosaccharides may be an innovative strategy for flesh quality modulation in aquaculture.

Object-based image analysis (OBIA), which has been commonly used for land cover and land use classification, may encounter challenges when satellite images’ spatial resolution achieves at the sub-meter level. An image object may exhibit spectral heterogeneity, causing traditional object-level statistical measures such as mean values of the pixels in an object not suited to represent the feature of the object. Additionally, an image object may have strong spatial association with its surroundings. Traditional OBIA only considers spatial features of individual object, but ignoring spatial arrangement or spatial association between objects. This paper proposes a new OBIA method by integrating within-object spectral variability and between-object spatial association. The within-object spectral variability is captured by the histograms of the pixels in an object across multispectral bands to reflect the heterogeneity of their pixel values. Based on this, the initial classification result is obtained using non-parametric curve matching methods. Then, the between-object spatial association is represented by curves derived from the frequency of pairwise classes in four main directions, also in the form of curves. The curves now composed of both the histograms of spectral feature and the class pair frequency of spatial feature are then fused for another curve matching based classification. This recurrent process is repeated and the spatial association is recaptured from the previous classification result at each iteration until a stopping criterion is satisfied. The curve matching classification method based on histograms of spectral feature is superior to traditional OBIA based on only object-level statistical measures since it fully characterizes spectral variability in the objects. The between-object spatial association works as a spatial filter that considers spatial arrangement of classes in a neighborhood. The developed method is especially suitable for classifying high spatial resolution (HSR) images with land cover/land use classes in typical urban areas.

L-carnitine is a functional aquafeed additive for enhancing lipid catabolism by elevating mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation and modulating energy metabolism to provide a “protein sparing effect”. However, results on the effects of dietary l-carnitine on nutrient metabolism in fish are still conflicting. We explored comprehensively the effects of dietary l-carnitine on energy metabolism in Nile tilapia. We fed Nile tilapia for eight weeks with diets supplemented with l-carnitine or not. We conducted metabolic tracking tests by intraperitoneally injecting individual fish with 14C-labeled palmitic acid (PA), glucose (Glu) and an amino acid mixture (AAs). After the feeding trial, insignificant growth-promoting effect of l-carnitine was obtained in treated fish. However, l-carnitine significantly reduced the lipid content in whole body and muscle accompanied by increasing the free carnitine concentration and fatty acid β-oxidation efficiency. Moreover, l-carnitine elevated concentrations of serum glucose, pyruvate and lactate, and increased glycogen and protein deposition in muscle. These results suggest that ingested glucose and protein prefer to be reserved in carnitine-fed fish with sufficient fatty acids oxidation for energy. Nevertheless, after a 14C-labeled single nutrient injection, carnitine-fed fish showed a higher oxidation rate of [1-14C]-PA, d-[1-14C]-Glu and l-[14C (U)]-AAs. Our study indicates that, the effects of l-carnitine on nutrient metabolism are correlated with the abundance of individual macronutrients such that an inadequate lipid supply would cause dietary l-carnitine supplementation to elevate higher breakdown of glucose and protein for energy generation. The present study provides new insights on the regulation mechanism of l-carnitine on nutrient metabolism in fish.

High-fat diet (HFD) caused some adverse effects in farmed fish, thus the adaptation to HFD in fish is an important research topic. This study was conducted to examine the roles of carnitine and its related mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) in the adaptation to HFD in Nile tilapia. Nile tilapias were fed with HFD (13 %), HFD + mildronate (HFD + MD, inhibitor of carnitine synthesis, 1000 mg/kg body per day) or a normal fat diet (NFD, 7 %) for eight weeks. After the feeding trail, the fish fed with HFD showed higher hepatic free carnitine content and FAO activities, and similar levels of serum triglyceride (TG) and whole body fat. However, the HFD + MD-fed fish remarkably decreased carnitine content and FAO efficiency in tissues than those in the HFD-fed fish, and increased contents of serum free fatty acids (FFA) and TG, whole body fat and hepatic TG. Moreover, the HFD-fed fish upregulated the expressions of the genes associated to FAO, lipid transport and lipolysis. Nevertheless, the fish fed with HFD + MD showed lower transcriptional levels of the genes related to lipolysis and lipid transport, and higher lipogenesis genes. These results indicate that the adaptive changes in the fish fed with HFD were eliminated by dietary MD supplementation, and show that carnitine and its related FAO activity play important roles in the adaptation to HFD in fish. This study illustrates that in the practical usage of HFD in aquaculture, the endogenous carnitine concentration and mitochondrial FAO activities should be important checkpoints. We investigated the effects of high-pressure homogenization processing (HPHP), thermal treatment (TT), and milk matrix (soy, skimmed, or whole milk) on 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) scavenging activity and in vitro bioaccessibility of total and individual phenolics in pomelo juice (PJ) and kiwi juice (KJ). HPHP and TT resulted in an increase of 10.6–17.5% in the phenolic contents of KJ and PJ but diminished phenolic bioaccessibility from 1.3% to 46.8%. Addition of milk matrix effectively enhanced phenolic bioaccessibility in KJ and PJ from 21.6% to 37.8% and 60.1% to 63.3%, respectively, except that addition of soy milk reduced total phenolic (TP) bioaccessibility by 14.9% in PJ. Skimmed milk improved TP bioaccessibility in KJ to a greater extent than did soy or whole milk, and whole milk effectively enhanced bioaccessibility in PJ. Our results suggest that the bioaccessibility of phenolics in fruit can be improved by regulating processing conditions and food matrices.

Purpose: The mechanisms for persistent and progressive loss of myocardial function in advanced heart failure (HF) remain incompletely characterized. In the current study, we sought to determine the impact of TGF-β on fibroblasts transcriptional profiles and assess if exosomes from TGF-β treated fibroblasts could induce a heart failure phenotype in co-cultured cardiomyocytes. Method: Normal heart fibroblasts were treated with TGF-β with a final conc. of 2.5 ng/ml in serum free media. HF fibroblasts were also obtained from patients undergoing implantation of left ventricular assist devices. Exosomes were collected using three-step ultracentrifugation. Cardiomyocytes were co-cultured with exosomes from TGF-β-treated, HF and control fibroblasts. RNA was extracted from the fibroblasts, exosomes, and the cardiomyocytes for a targeted panel of genes using Ion AmpliSeq. Fibroblast function was evaluated by collagen gel contraction. Results: Fibroblasts treated with TGF-β differentially express 21 of the 140 genes in our targeted panel. These fibroblasts exhibit enhanced collagen gel contraction similar to HF fibroblasts. Fifty of these targeted genes were also differentially expressed in fibroblast exosomes. Pathway analysis of these transcriptional changes suggest hypertrophic signaling to cardiac muscle. Cardiomyocytes, co-cultured with exosomes from TGF- β treated fibroblasts or heart failure patients, differentially expressed 40 genes compared to controls. Cardiomyocytes co-cultured with exosomes of TGF-β treated fibroblasts induced a molecular phenotype similar to cardiomyocytes co-cultured with exosomes from HF fibroblasts. These changes involve contractile proteins, adrenergic receptors, calcium signaling, metabolism and cell renewal. Conclusion: TGF-β induces broad transcriptional changes in fibroblasts as well as their exosomes. These exosomes induce a heart failure phenotype in cardiomyocytes. Exosome signaling from fibroblasts likely contributes to disease progression in heart failure.

RNA expression analysis was performed on the corpus luteum tissue at five time points after prostaglandin F2 alpha treatment of midcycle cows using an Affymetrix Bovine Gene v1 Array. The normalized linear microarray data was uploaded to the NCBI GEO repository (GSE94069). Subsequent statistical analysis determined differentially expressed transcripts ± 1.5-fold change from saline control with P ≤ 0.05. Gene ontology of differentially expressed transcripts was annotated by DAVID and Panther. Physiological characteristics of the study animals are presented in a figure. Bioinformatic analysis by Ingenuity Pathway Analysis was curated, compiled, and presented in tables. A dataset comparison with similar microarray analyses was performed and bioinformatics analysis by Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, DAVID, Panther, and String of differentially expressed genes from each dataset as well as the differentially expressed genes common to all three datasets were curated, compiled, and presented in tables. Finally, a table comparing four bioinformatics tools’ predictions of functions associated with genes common to all three datasets is presented. These data have been further analyzed and interpreted in the companion article “Early transcriptome responses of the bovine mid-cycle corpus luteum to prostaglandin F2 alpha includes cytokine signaling” [1].

Background: Previous studies have linked single metal to hemoglobin levels in children and adolescents; however, studies with regards to metal mixtures are still limited., Objective: We aimed to investigate the associations of single metal and metal mixtures with hemoglobin levels in children and adolescents., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 2064 children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 years in Liuzhou, China in 2018. The concentrations of 15 metals in urine were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Generalized linear regression and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were used to estimate the associations of single metal and metal mixtures with hemoglobin levels, respectively., Results: The multivariable-adjusted β-values for the highest versus the first quartiles of urinary metal concentrations were - 1.57 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: -3.01, -0.13) for chromium, -2.47 (95 % CI: -3.90, -1.05) for nickel and 1.88 (95 % CI: 0.49, 3.28) for copper. In addition, we found a significant negative association between the WQS index and hemoglobin levels (adjusted β = -0.93, 95 % CI: -1.69, -0.19), with nickel contributing the most to the WQS index at 59.0 %. Subgroup analyses showed that exposure to urinary nickel or metal mixtures were associated with decreased hemoglobin levels in adolescents, but not in children (all P interation  < 0.001)., Conclusion: Among children and adolescents, urinary chromium and nickel concentrations were associated with decreased hemoglobin levels, while copper showed a positive relationship. Moreover, a negative association was observed between exposure to metal mixtures and hemoglobin levels. In this work, a triphenylamine-benzofuran-derived fluorescent probe TBSF was developed for monitoring the sulfite level in Chinese medicinal materials and imaging in living cells. In the testing system, under 445 nm excitation, TBSF responded to sulfite steadily with a 540 nm fluorescence reporting signal. The testing system showed advantages including high sensitivity, rapid response, and high selectivity. In particular, TBSF achieved the sulfite detection in the water decoction of Chinese medicinal materials from both addition and excessive fumigation. It also realized the intracellular imaging of both exogenous and endogenous sulfite in living HepG2 cells. Diabetes has become an increasingly serious global health crisis. Long-term hyperglycemia can lead to vascular and neurological disorders, thus deterring wound healing. Therefore, exploring treatment modalities for wounds in individuals with diabetes is clinically significant. Bletilla striata polysaccharide and bioactive natural polymers carbomer 940 and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) are cross-linked to form the Bletilla striata polysaccharide hydrogel (named CCHG/BSP). Upon characterization, we found that the hydrogel has a porous structure and good mechanical and moisture retention properties. A hemolysis test revealed that the hydrogel had high safety. Furthermore, the hydrogel effectively promoted proliferation and migration in mouse L929 fibroblasts. In back wounds inflicted in a streptozotocin-induced mouse model of diabetes, the CCHG/BSP hydrogel significantly promoted wound healing. Hematoxylin-eosin, Masson's trichrome, and immunohistochemical staining of tissues around the wound suggest that the mechanism underlying wound healing in diabetes may involve the promotion of angiogenesis, regulation of inflammation, and promotion of collagen regeneration. Background: The gut microbiome is central to human health, but the potential impact of ozone (O 3 ) exposure on its establishment in early life has not been thoroughly examined. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between prenatal O 3 exposure and the variations of the human gut microbiome during the first two years of life., Design: A cohort study design was used. Pregnant women in the third trimester were recruited from an obstetric clinic, and long-term follow-ups were conducted after delivery. The gut microbiome was analyzed using the 16 S rRNA V3-V4 gene regions. Functional pathway analyses of gut microbial communities in neonates were performed using Tax4fun. The average concentrations of ambient O 3 and other air pollutants from pregnancy to delivery were calculated using the China High Air Pollutants (CHAP) dataset, based on the permanent residential addresses of participants. Multiple linear regression and mixed linear models were utilized to investigate the associations between prenatal O 3 exposure and gut microbiome features., Results: Prenatal O 3 exposure did not significantly affect the gut microbial alpha diversity of mothers and neonates. However, it was found to be positively associated with the gut microbial alpha diversity in 24-month-old infants. Prenatal O 3 exposure explained 13.1 % of the variation in neonatal gut microbial composition. After controlling for potential covariates, prenatal O 3 exposure was associated with neonatal-specific gut microbial taxa and functional pathways. Furthermore, the mixed linear models showed that prenatal O 3 exposure was negatively associated with variations of Streptococcus (p-value = 0.001, q-value = 0.005), Enterococcus (p-value = 0.001, q-value = 0.005), Escherichia-Shigella (p-value = 0.010, q-value = 0.025), and Bifidobacterium (p-value = 0.003, q-value = 0.010)., Conclusions: This study is the first to examine the effects of prenatal O 3 exposure on gut microbial homeostasis and variations. It demonstrates that prenatal O 3 exposure is associated with variations in certain aspects of the gut microbiome. The earlobes of chickens exhibit a range of colors, but there has been relatively little research on the formation of structural blue earlobes. Previous results showed that the structural color earlobes were related to the interplay between melanin and collagen in light reflection. To investigate the metabolic differences in these earlobe colors, we conducted nontargeted liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer (LC-MS) for metabolomic sequencing on structural blue (Green and Blue groups) and nonstructural color (Black group) earlobes tissue of Jiangshan black-bone chickens. The content detection in earlobe tissues of different groups shows that there were significant differences in melanin and collagen content between the Black and Green group. The metabolome identified a total of 6,102 mass spectroscopic peaks and ultimately identified 919 annotated metabolites. Variable importance in the projection (VIP) analysis identified the common differential expressed metabolites (DMs) "Tyr Thr Ala Glu" among the 3 groups. By combining those DMs with differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in our previous transcriptome data from the same sample, and associated with KEGG pathway analysis, multiple pathways related to melanogenesis and collagen metabolism were enriched across the 3 groups. By analyzing the metabolites and genes in these pathways, as well as the interaction network diagram of DEGs, we identified some key genes, Wnt Family Member 6 (WNT6), Transcription Factor 7 (TCF7), Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and Calcium/Calmodulin Dependent Protein Kinase II Alpha (CAMK2A), and some key DMs like DG (11M3/9M5/0:0) and gentisic acid. Indoor formaldehyde pollution seriously jeopardizes human health. The development of efficient and stable non-precious metal catalysts for low-temperature catalytic degradation of formaldehyde is a promising approach. In this study, TiO 2 {001} and {101} supports were loaded with different ratios of Mn and Ce active components, and the effects of the ratios of the active components on the catalytic activity were investigated. The elemental oxidation states, redox capacities, active oxygen mobilities and acid site distributions of the catalysts were determined using characterization techniques such as XPS, H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, and NH 3 -TPD. In situ infrared spectroscopy was utilized to reveal the differences in the two-step dehydrogenation reactions of dioxymethylene (DOM) in 5Mn1Ce/Ti-NS and 5Mn1Ce/Ti-NP. Density-functional theory was used to investigate the differences in the catalytic steps and maximum energy barriers of Mn-Ce/Ti-NS and Mn-Ce/Ti-NP for HCHO. The differences in catalytic activity due to the influence of the manganese and cerium active components on the {001} and {101} crystal faces of anatase titanium dioxide are comprehensively revealed. Exposure of the supported crystalline surfaces alters the catalytic activity centers and reaction pathways at the molecular level. Due to the coastal wetland degradation caused by human activities and environmental changes, many coastal wetland restoration studies have been carried out in China to restore the degraded ecosystems, but it still lacks a comprehensive assessment of restoration effectiveness at national scale. In this study, a meta-analysis of 78 field studies was conducted to quantitatively assess the restoration effectiveness of biodiversity and ecosystem services in China's coastal wetlands. At the same time, we evaluated the impact factors such as ecosystem types, restoration methods and measures, and restoration time on restoration effectiveness. The results show that coastal wetland ecological restoration has improved the biodiversity and ecosystem services by 36.8 % and 38.2 % respectively within the time range reported in the research literature, but neither has returned to the level of natural ecosystems. Biodiversity recovery is significantly positively correlated with the recovery of ecosystem services, indicating the simultaneous recovery outcome. Compared with degraded wetlands, the effectiveness of passive restoration is better than that of active restoration. In the mangrove ecosystem, invasive species removal is the most effective among the restoration measures, and the restoration effectiveness of polyculture plantations is better than that of monoculture plantations. When time ranges from 0 to 20 years, the recovery level of coastal wetlands tends to increase with the extension of restoration time. However, when the restoration time is >20 years, the recovery level decreases, which may be related to the lack of maintenance and management measures in the later stage. Introduction: To examine the influence of adjuvant chemoradiation therapy (CRT) on survival, stratified by varying numbers and level involved of metastatic lymph nodes in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC)., Methods: Patients who underwent surgery for metastatic, negative margin HNSCC without extranodal extension were retrospectively enrolled and divided into two groups based on adjuvant therapy received: radiotherapy (RT) and CRT. The impact of RT versus CRT, stratified by the number of positive lymph nodes and the level involved, on Disease-Free Survival (DFS) and Overall Survival (OS) was analyzed., Results: Following propensity score matching, a total of 580 patients were included. The burden and level of lymph node metastasis were independent predictors of poorer survival. Among patients with no more than two positive lymph nodes or involvement of levels I-III, the addition of chemotherapy to RT did not demonstrate a significant improvement in prognosis. However, in patients with three or more positive lymph nodes, CRT showed improved DFS and OS compared to RT. In patients with involvement of levels IV-V, the addition of chemotherapy to RT resulted in a significant 24 % reduction in the risk of recurrence and a 20 % decrease in the risk of death., Conclusion: Incorporation of adjuvant chemoradiation can lead to a favorable prognosis in patients with metastatic HNSCC. Phyllosphere microbes play a crucial role in plant health and productivity. However, the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on these communities is poorly understood. Here, we used amplicon sequencing to investigate the microbiome variations across eight grape cultivars and three distinct leaf ages. The diversity and richness of phyllosphere microbiomes were significantly affected by cultivars and leaf age. Young leaves of most grape cultivars had a higher diversity. Beta-diversity analyses revealed notable differences in microbial communities across leaf ages, with bacterial communities varying substantially between cultivars. The main bacterial genera included Staphylococcus, Exiguobacterium, Acinetobacter, Enterococcus, and Erwinia; the principal fungal genera were Cladosporium, Moesziomyces, Alternaria, Didymella, and Coprinellus across all samples. LEfSe analysis revealed significant differences in bacterial and fungal biomarkers at different leaf ages, with no biomarkers identified among different cultivars. Fungal biomarkers were more abundant than bacterial at three leaf ages, and older leaves had more fungal biomarkers. Notably, beneficial microbial taxa with biocontrol potential were present on the phyllosphere at 45 d, whereas certain fungal groups associated with increased disease risk were first detected at 100 d. The bacterial network was more complex than the fungal network, and young leaves had a more complex network in most cultivars. Background: Lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (LIRI) poses a significant challenge in various clinical scenarios. Despite extensive research on the pathogenesis and potential treatments of LIRI, there is a notable absence of bibliometric analysis., Materials and Methods: We summarized the results of LIRI research through two searches on the Web of Science, covering data from 1979 to 2023 with topic words "lung" and "reperfusion injury". The collected data were analyzed and visualized based on country, author(s), and keywords by bibliometric software. The keyword "programmed cell death" was further added to explore the hotspot of the LIRI research field., Results: The initial analysis of 1648 research articles showed a total of 40 countries and 7031 researchers were involved in the publications, with America being the most productive country in the research field of LIRI. Keyword analysis revealed that the evolving focus of LIRI research has progressively transitioned from, lung transplantation, primary graft dysfunction, inflammation, oxidative stress, and ex vivo lung perfusion to cell death. Subsequently, 212 publications specifically addressing programmed cell death (PCD) in LIRI were identified, which clarified the recent hotspot of the LIRI field., Conclusion: With closer international cooperation and increasing research scale, the LIRI research focused mainly on the pathogenesis and potential therapeutic interventions for LIRI. PCD in LIRI is becoming a trending topic and will continue to be a hotspot in this field. Vegetation resilience is critical for understanding the dynamic feedback effect of regional ecological environment stability against interferences. Thus, based on quantify the interferences of climate dryness and vegetation water deficit affecting vegetation growth function, incorporate mechanical Hooke's law to develop a vegetation resilience assessment model by quantitatively expressing vegetation growth function maintenance ability, to reveal the ecological environment stability and its feedback effect on interferences in the study area. The essential discoveries of the study are as follows: (1) with the increase of precipitation and the improvement of afforestation on soil erosion, the interferences intensity of climate dryness and vegetation water deficit in the ecological environment decreased by 5.88 % and 4.92 % respectively, the regional vegetation growth function loss was improved, especially in the southern region; (2) the decrease of vegetation growth function loss promoted the vegetation resilience level fluctuated from class II to class IV, with the average annual vegetation resilience increased by 7.02 %, reflecting that the regional ecological environment stability increased from difficult to rapid recovery after disturbance, and the benefit was especially noticeable in the eastern and southern forested areas; (3) the contribution rates of climate dryness and vegetation water deficit to the variation of vegetation resilience caused by vegetation restoration were -1.38 % and 4.73 %, respectively, and the prominent positive feedback effect of increasing vegetation resilience with decreasing vegetation water deficit degree in forest restoration area, indicating that the vegetation water deficit greatly impacts ecological environment stability in the study area, and forest restoration constantly improves regional ecological environment stability more than grassland restoration. Microplastics have emerged as environmental hazards in recent years. This study was intended to prove the toxic effects of microplastics on the male reproductive system and further elucidate its mechanism. C57bl/6 mice were exposed to ultrapure water or different doses (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/d) of 5 μm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) for 4 weeks, and the GC-1 mouse spermatogonium was treated with different concentrations of PS-MPs. The results showed that sperm count and motility were decreased, and sperm deformity rate was increased after exposure to PS-MPs. The morphology of testes in PS-MPs groups exhibited pathological changes, such as abnormal development of spermatogenic tubules, and inhibited spermatogonium function. Furthermore, the fluorescence intensity of TUNEL staining and the BAX/BCL2 ratio were increased. Exposure to PS-MPs resulted in impaired mitochondrial morphology of spermatogonium, decreased activity of GSH-px and SOD, and increased the MDA level. In vitro, after treatment with PS-MPs, the cell apoptosis rate of spermatogonium was significantly increased, mitochondrial membrane potential was decreased, mitochondrial morphology was damaged, and exposure to PS-MPs increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, inducing an oxidative stress state in spermatogonia. Background: PM 2.5 and its chemical components increase health risks and are associated with depression and gut microbiota. However, there is still limited evidence on whether gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) mediate the association between PM 2.5 , PM 2.5 chemical components, and antenatal depression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of maternal gut microbiota in correlations between short-term exposure to PM 2.5 , short-term exposure to PM 2.5 chemical components, and antenatal depression., Methods: Demographic information and stool samples were collected from 75 pregnant women in their third trimester. Their exposure to PM 2.5 and PM 2.5 chemical components was measured. Participants were divided into the non-antenatal depression group or the antenatal depression group according to the cut-off of 10 points on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The gut microbiota were analyzed using the 16 S rRNA-V3/V4 gene sequence, and the concentration of PM 2.5 and its chemical components was calculated using the Tracking Air Pollution in China (TAP) database. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze SCFAs in stool samples. In order to assess the mediating effects of gut microbiota and SCFAs, mediation models were utilized., Results: There were significant differences between gut microbial composition and SCFAs concentrations between the non-antenatal depression group and the antenatal depression group. PM 2.5 and its chemical components were positively associated with EPDS scores and negatively associated with genera Enterococcus and Enterobacter. Genera Candidatus&#95;Soleaferrea (β = -7.21, 95%CI -11.00 to -3.43, q = 0.01) and Enterococcus (β = -2.37, 95%CI -3.87 to -0.87, q = 0.02) were negatively associated with EPDS scores, indicating their potential protective effects against antenatal depression. There was no significant association between SCFAs and EPDS scores. The mediating role of Enterococcus between different lagged periods of PM 2.5 , PM 2.5 chemical component exposure, and antenatal depression was revealed. Objective: Due to the infiltrative nature and high local recurrence of gliomas, particularly high-grade gliomas, gross total resection (GTR) of a tumor is the first critical step in treatment. This study aimed to determine whether the integration of intraoperative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and fluorescein sodium can improve the identification of tumor boundaries and residuals, and increasethe extent of resection (EOR) to better protect neurological function., Methods: We retrospectively analysed clinical data from 87 glioma surgeries and categorised the patients into 3 groups: CEUS plus fluorescein sodium, fluorescein sodium alone and microsurgery alone., Results: In terms of EOR, GTR was achieved in 22 (91.7%) patients in the CEUS plus fluorescein sodium group, which was significantly higher than that in other groups. In the subgroup analysis of tumors with lobulated or satellite lesions and WHO grade III or IV gliomas, CEUS plus fluorescein sodium group showed the highest GTR (86.7% and 88.9% respectively) among the groups. Logistic regression analysis of factors that may affect the GTR of tumors showed that the functional areas involvement and the presence of lobulated or satellite lesions were risk factors, whereas CEUS plus fluorescein sodium group was a protective factor. However, CEUS plus fluorescein sodium group had the longest surgery time., Conclusions: Intraoperative CEUS with fluorescein sodium is a real-time, straightforward, safe, and effective approach to perform surgical resection of gliomas. The current outbreak of mpox presents a significant threat to the global community. However, the lack of mpox-specific drugs necessitates the identification of additional candidates for clinical trials. In this study, a network medicine framework was used to investigate poxviruses-human interactions to identify potential drugs effective against the mpox virus (MPXV). The results indicated that poxviruses preferentially target hubs on the human interactome, and that these virally-targeted proteins (VTPs) tend to aggregate together within specific modules. Comorbidity analysis revealed that mpox is closely related to immune system diseases. Based on predicted drug-target interactions, 268 drugs were identified using the network proximity approach, among which 23 drugs displaying the least side-effects and significant proximity to MPXV were selected as the final candidates. Lastly, specific drugs were explored based on VTPs, differentially expressed proteins, and intermediate nodes, corresponding to different categories. These findings provide novel insights that can contribute to a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of MPXV and development of ready-to-use treatment strategies based on drug repurposing., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
