Background: Mainly due to the use of different inclusion criteria and quality assessments, systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) with homeopathic intervention studies (HOMIS) have shown inconsistent results. We aimed to build recommendations for "Summarizing evidence from Homeopathic Intervention Studies" (Sum-HomIS recommendations) in order to approach standardization., Methods: Against the background of a framework-project to update the evidence from homeopathic intervention studies, we launched an expert panel on how to assess the quality of HOMIS and how to summarize evidence from HOMIS. The results of a literature review and the expert communications in advance of the panel as well as the consensus from the discussions are presented here. We added specific considerations for homeopathic veterinary research., Results: On top of the general guidelines when planning a review we report five basic Sum-HomIS recommendations. These are: 1) A broad literature search including special archives and consideration of so-called grey-literature; 2) The inclusion of controlled observational studies alongside randomized controlled trials; 3) The choice of a clear clinical research question in the terms that, if possible, the review project includes studies with predominantly homogeneous populations, interventions, comparators and outcomes (PICOs); 4) The use of a global quality assessment including the assessment of external, model and internal validity; 5) A summary of evidence using the GRADE-approach if the body of evidence is sufficiently large and homogenous or a descriptive summary if it is not so., Conclusions: We present recommendations for designing, conducting, and reporting SRs and MAs with HOMIS., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest Authors declare none., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Background: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are an established research method to investigate the effects of an intervention. Several recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses of RCTs with homeopathic interventions have identified shortcomings in design, conduct, analysis, and reporting of trials. Guidelines for RCTs in homeopathic medicine are lacking., Objectives: This paper aims to fill this gap in order to enhance the quality of RCTs in the field of homeopathy., Methods: Identification of the homeopathy-specific requirements for RCTs by reviewing literature and experts' communications. Systematization of the findings using a suitable checklist for planning, conducting, and reporting RCTs, namely the SPIRIT statement, and high-quality homeopathy RCTs as examples. Cross-checking of the created checklist with the RedHot-criteria, the PRECIS criteria, and a qualitative evaluation checklist. Consideration of the REFLECT statement and the ARRIVE Guidelines 2.0 for veterinary homeopathy., Results: Recommendations for future implementation of RCTs in homeopathy are summarized in a checklist. Background: and purpose. COVID-19 is a novel viral disease causing worldwide pandemia. The aim of this study was to describe the effect of adjunctive individualized homeopathic treatment delivered to hospitalized patients with confirmed symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection., Patient Presentation: Thirteen patients with COVID-19 were admitted. Mean age was 73.4 ± 15.0 (SD) years. Twelve (92.3%) were speedily discharged without relevant sequelae after 14.4 ± 8.9 days. A single patient admitted in an advanced stage of septic disease died in hospital. A time-dependent improvement of relevant clinical symptoms was observed in the 12 surviving patients. Six (46.2%) were critically ill and treated in the intensive care unit (ICU). Mean stay at the ICU of the 5 surviving patients was 18.8 ± 6.8 days. In six patients (46.2%) gastrointestinal disorders accompanied COVID-19., Conclusion: The observations suggest that adjunctive homeopathic treatment may be helpful to treat patients with confirmed COVID-19 even in high - risk patients especially since there is no conventional treatment of COVID-19 available at present., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: From a pharmaceutical point of view, we see a need to develop stable preclinical test systems to identify and investigate effects of potentized remedies as used in Anthroposophic Medicine and Homeopathy. We evaluated a plant bioassay regarding its capacity to distinguish homeopathic remedies from placebo, applied as sucrose pillules., Methods: Pea seed (Pisum sativum L) was soaked for 24 hours in water with dissolved homeopathic or placebo pillules, or in water only. Shoot length was measured 14 days after planting and treatment groups were compared by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The stability of the system was validated by systematic negative control experiments., Results: The system is suitable to test a common application form - sucrose pillules - of a potentized preparation without influence of the pharmaceutical carrier substance. A screening of 13 potentized preparations revealed Calcium carbonicum to affect pea shoot growth (p < 0.05). Three independent series of main experiments were performed with potentized Calcium carbonicum to assess reproducibility. Meta-analysis of all data revealed significant effects of Calcium carbonicum 12c and 30c on pea shoot growth (p < 0.05), which were however dependent on the date of experiment and/or the experimental series., Conclusions: Potentized Calcium carbonicum, applied as sucrose pillules, influenced pea shoot growth in the assay investigated. However, due to the small effect size and due to the modulation of the effects by still unknown external factors, further optimization of this bioassay is necessary to be used in pharmaceutical quality control or in investigating the biological or pharmaceutical mode of action of potentized preparations., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. In this short communication we present a re-analysis of homeopathic patient data in comparison to control patient data from the same Outpatient´s Unit "Homeopathy in malignant diseases" of the Medical University of Vienna. In this analysis we took account of a probable immortal time bias. For patients suffering from advanced stages of cancer and surviving the first 6 or 12 months after diagnosis, respectively, the results show that utilizing homeopathy gives a statistically significant (p<0.001) advantage over control patients regarding survival time. In conclusion, bearing in mind all limitations, the results of this retrospective study suggest that patients with advanced stages of cancer might benefit from additional homeopathic treatment until a survival time of up to 12 months after diagnosis., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: The use of complementary and alternative medicine has increased over the past decade. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether homeopathy influenced global health status and subjective wellbeing when used as an adjunct to conventional cancer therapy., Design: In this pragmatic randomized controlled trial, 410 patients, who were treated by standard anti-neoplastic therapy, were randomized to receive or not receive classical homeopathic adjunctive therapy in addition to standard therapy. The study took place at the Medical University Vienna, Department of Medicine I, Clinical Division of Oncology., Main Outcome Measures: The main outcome measures were global health status and subjective wellbeing as assessed by the patients. At each of three visits (one baseline, two follow-up visits), patients filled in two different questionnaires., Results: 373 patients yielded at least one of three measurements. The improvement of global health status between visits 1 and 3 was significantly stronger in the homeopathy group by 7.7 (95% CI 2.3-13.0, p=0.005) when compared with the control group. A significant group difference was also observed with respect to subjective wellbeing by 14.7 (95% CI 8.5-21.0, p<0.001) in favor of the homeopathic as compared with the control group. Control patients showed a significant improvement only in subjective wellbeing between their first and third visits., Conclusion: Results suggest that the global health status and subjective wellbeing of cancer patients improve significantly when adjunct classical homeopathic treatment is administered in addition to conventional therapy., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Current literature suggests a positive influence of additive classical homeopathy on global health and well-being in cancer patients. Besides encouraging case reports, there is little if any research on long-term survival of patients who obtain homeopathic care during cancer treatment., Design: Data from cancer patients who had undergone homeopathic treatment complementary to conventional anti-cancer treatment at the Outpatient Unit for Homeopathy in Malignant Diseases, Medical University Vienna, Department of Medicine I, Vienna, Austria, were collected, described and a retrospective subgroup-analysis with regard to survival time was performed. Patient inclusion criteria were at least three homeopathic consultations, fatal prognosis of disease, quantitative and qualitative description of patient characteristics, and survival time., Results: In four years, a total of 538 patients were recorded to have visited the Outpatient Unit Homeopathy in Malignant Diseases, Medical University Vienna, Department of Medicine I, Vienna, Austria. 62.8% of them were women, and nearly 20% had breast cancer. From the 53.7% (n=287) who had undergone at least three homeopathic consultations within four years, 18.7% (n=54) fulfilled inclusion criteria for survival analysis. The surveyed neoplasms were glioblastoma, lung, cholangiocellular and pancreatic carcinomas, metastasized sarcoma, and renal cell carcinoma. Median overall survival was compared to expert expectations of survival outcomes by specific cancer type and was prolonged across observed cancer entities (p<0.001)., Conclusion: Extended survival time in this sample of cancer patients with fatal prognosis but additive homeopathic treatment is interesting. However, findings are based on a small sample, and with only limited data available about patient and treatment characteristics. The relationship between homeopathic treatment and survival time requires prospective investigation in larger samples possibly using matched-pair control analysis or randomized trials., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Study Objective: To evaluate the ease of use of two airway devices, the EasyTube (EzT) versus the esophageal-tracheal Combitube (ETC)., Design: Prospective, randomized controlled trial., Setting: University hospital., Subjects: 80 adult, ASA physical status 1 and 2 patients scheduled for elective surgery., Interventions: Patients' tracheas were intubated with the EzT or the ETC in randomized fashion., Measurements: Difficulty of insertion, time to achieve an effective airway, insertion success rate, maneuvers to achieve an effective airway, oropharyngeal leak pressure, intracuff pressure, ventilatory parameters, success rate of gastric tube insertion, and frequency of adverse effects were compared., Main Results: Insertion was easier in the EzT than in ETC; insertion of the EzT was rated easy in 36 7 cases and moderately difficult in 4 cases versus 26 and 14 cases, respectively, for the ETC (P = 0.014). Less time was required to achieve an effective airway with the EzT than the ETC: 19.4 ± 5.3 sec versus 30.6 ± 4.1 seconds, respectively (P < 0.001). Oropharyngeal leak pressure was higher with the EzT than the ETC (34.3 ± 5.95 vs 31.6 ± 2.42 cm H(2)O; P = 0.011). Peak airway pressures for the EZT and the ETC were 22.2 ± 0.99 cm H(2)0 and 33.7 ± 1.82 cm H(2)O, respectively (P < 0.001). Gastric tube insertion was successful with both devices; however, the EzT allowed insertion of gastric tubes of wider diameter. No severe perioperative adverse events were recorded for either device., Conclusion: The EzT has distinct advantages over the ETC in airway management, including shorter time to achieve an effective airway and easier insertion., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Study Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness, safety, ease of placement, and ventilatory parameters of a new alternate airway device, the EasyTube (EzT; Teleflex Ruesch, Research Triangle Park, NC), in comparison to the endotracheal tube (ETT)., Design: Prospective, randomized controlled trial., Setting: University Hospital., Subjects: 200 adult ASA physical status I and II patients scheduled for surgery., Interventions: Patients were randomized to two groups, one to receive ventilation via the EzT (n = 100) or the ETT (n = 100). After preoxygenation and induction with fentanyl and propofol, patients received muscle relaxation. The respective airway device was then inserted and mechanical ventilation was instituted., Measurements: Ease of insertion, number of insertion maneuvers, time until airtight seal of the airway was achieved, duration of surgery, leak pressure as well as arterial oxygen saturation (SpO(2)), and end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO(2)) data, were recorded., Main Results: Mallampati airway class was higher in the EzT group (P < 0.029), while thyromental distance showed no difference between the two groups. Ease of insertion was noted in the EzT group (P < 0.043). Number of insertions was equal in both groups; insertion time was shorter with the EzT (15.5 +/- 3.6 sec vs. 19.3 +/- 4.6 sec; P < 0.0001). Leak pressure and SpO(2) were not significantly different, while ETCO(2) was lower with the ETT (P < 0.024). Adjustments had to be made for two EzT group patients. No difference in frequency of laryngo-pharyngeal discomfort was observed in either group., Conclusion: Insertion of an EzT appears to reduce time and facilitate placement of an airway device when compared with direct laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation.

Study Objective: To measure plasma nitrate concentrations after inhalation of nitric oxide for treatment of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis., Design: Prospective pilot study., Setting: Intensive care unit at a university-affiliated hospital., Patients: Nine consecutive medical intensive care unit patients with ARDS and sepsis., Interventions: After diagnosis of ARDS, all patients received a balloon-tipped triple-lumen thermodilution pulmonary artery catheter (Baxter Healthcare Corp, Irvine, CA). Inhaled nitric oxide was initiated starting at a dose of one part per million and titrated according to the maximal achievable increase in arterial oxygenation. Hemodynamic measurements including intrapulmonary shunt fraction and blood as analyses were performed before nitric oxide application, as well as 1 and 24 hours after starting nitric oxide, respectively. Plasma samples for determination of nitrate were taken from the arterial line and from the pulmonary thermodilution catheter and analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography., Measurements and Main Results: Eight of 9 patients were nitric oxide responders (intrapulmonary shunt decrease >5%). There was no statistically significant increase in nitrate plasma concentration measured both in peripheral arterial and in mixed venous blood with inhaled nitric oxide up to a concentration of 40 parts per million., Conclusion: Inhalation of nitric oxide in patients with ARDS and sepsis does not result in increased plasma nitrate concentrations.

Background: Stringy, tenacious tracheal secretions may prevent extubation in patients weaned from the respirator. This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with parallel assignment was performed to assess the influence of sublingually administered potassium dichromate C30 on the amount of tenacious, stringy tracheal secretions in critically ill patients with a history of tobacco use and COPD., Methods: In this study, 50 patients breathing spontaneously with continuous positive airway pressure were receiving either potassium dichromate C30 globules (group 1) [Deutsche Homoopathie-Union, Pharmaceutical Company; Karlsruhe, Germany] or placebo (group 2). Five globules were administered twice daily at intervals of 12 h. The amount of tracheal secretions on day 2 after the start of the study as well as the time for successful extubation and length of stay in the ICU were recorded., Results: The amount of tracheal secretions was reduced significantly in group 1 (p < 0.0001). Extubation could be performed significantly earlier in group 1 (p < 0.0001). Similarly, length of stay was significantly shorter in group 1 (4.20 +/- 1.61 days vs 7.68 +/- 3.60 days, p < 0.0001 [mean +/- SD])., Conclusion: These data suggest that potentized (diluted and vigorously shaken) potassium dichromate may help to decrease the amount of stringy tracheal secretions in COPD patients.

Study Objective: To investigate prospectively whether blood gas samples drawn from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) cannulae help to exclude at least clinically significant recirculation volumes in patients with acute respiratory failure., Design: Feasibility study., Setting: Intensive care unit at a university-affiliated hospital., Patients: Ten consecutive adult patients suffering from severe respiratory failure and undergoing ECMO., Interventions: The drawing (venous) ECMO cannula was placed into the inferior vena cava via a femoral vein, and the oxygenated blood was returned via the right subclavian vein by supraclavicular access directly into the right atrium. Blood gas samples were obtained from both cannulae., Measurements and Main Results: The median arterial oxygen tension (PaO(2)) obtained from the arterial cannula was 537 mmHg (range, 366 to 625 mmHg), the median mixed venous oxygen tension (PvO(2)) drawn from the venous cannula was 42 mmHg (range, 25 to 54 mmHg), which was less than 10% of that observed in the arterial cannula, and also within the physiologic range of PvO(2). The ECMO flow necessary to maintain patients' oxygen saturation above 90% (4.1 L/min; range, 1.95 to 5.8 L/min) was significantly lower than the patients' cardiac output (CO; 6.2 L/min; range, 4.1 to 7.9 L/min; p < 0.001). CONSLUSIONS; We recommend obtaining blood gas samples-immediately after initiation of ECMO-from both cannulae. A PvO(2) within physiologic range and below 10% of PaO(2) rules out any clinically relevant recirculation volume.

The Combitube (Tyco-Healthcare-Kendall-Sheridan, Mansfield, MA) is an easily inserted and highly efficacious device to be used as an alternative airway whenever conventional ventilation fails. The Combitube allows ventilation and oxygenation whether the device locates in the esophagus (very common) or the trachea (rare). In this report, we review studies that suggest the Combitube is a valuable and effective airway in the emergency and prehospital settings, in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, in elective surgery, and in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Also reviewed are studies that demonstrate the superiority of the Combitube over other supraglottic ventilatory devices in resuscitation with respect to success rates with insertion and ventilation. Contrary to the Laryngeal Mask Airway, the Combitube may help in patients with limited mouth opening. The Combitube may be of special benefit in patients with massive bleeding or regurgitation, and it minimizes the risk of aspiration.

Study Objective: To assess whether postoperatively administered prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) might prevent bleeding in patients after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)., Design: Prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled trial., Setting: University-affiliated hospital., Patients: 49 patients scheduled for elective CABG surgery., Interventions: The PGE1 group received intravenous PGE(1) up to 15 ng/kg/min for 72 hours after surgery, whereas the placebo group received isotonic saline for the same time period., Measurements and Main Results: Nine patients (4 in the PGE1 group vs. 5 in the placebo group) had to be excluded because of hemodynamic instability, and 1 in the placebo group because of gastric bleeding. In the remaining 39 patients (20 vs. 19), no significant differences with regard to hemoglobin levels or platelet count could be observed. There was no significant difference between the groups concerning the amount of packed red blood cells, platelet concentrates, or fresh frozen plasma transfused. No significant differences could be observed regarding laboratory markers of coagulation activation or hepatic synthesis either., Conclusions: PGE1 did not prevent coagulation disturbances and blood loss when administered postoperatively in patients undergoing CABG. The absence of these expected effects might be explained by the concomitant administration of acetylsalicylic acid, whose antiaggregatory acivity seems to exceed the effects of PGE1.

Investigation of drug interactions between blood cells and endothelium is of high interest. The current study describes the development of a rapid fluorescence-based leukocyte transmigration system through endothelial cell monolayers for investigation of drug influences. To test the new assay, endothelial cells were cultured on microporous filters, pore size 3.0 microm, in 96-well-plates. Freshly isolated neutrophils were seeded on endothelial cell monolayers and transmigrated cells were measured after incubation for three hours. Migration of non-stimulated neutrophils through non-stimulated endothelial cell monolayer was used as control and set as 100%. The influence of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac was investigated. Assay precision tests were done using intraassay (within-day variability) and interassay (day-to-day variability) controls. Transmigration rate was decreased to 53 +/- 6.8% SD (diclofenac 0.7 microg/mL). Different concentrations showed a dose dependent effect (0.07 microg/mL: 97 +/- 9.5%, 7 microg/mL: 37 +/- 4.7%). Analysis of assay accuracy of the new 96-well-sized transmigration assay showed reliable results (coefficient of variation: intraassay 8.2 %; interassay 11.8%). In conclusion, this new, rapid, and sample saving 96-well-microtiter transmigration assay allows examination of drug influence on neutrophil migration through endothelial cell monolayers. Moreover, this assay can also be used for other cell-cell interactions.

Background: Adequate anticoagulation is a precondition to prevent extracorporeal blood clotting and to improve biocompatibility during hemodialysis. In this study, we performed a morphologic analysis by using scanning electron microscopy to compare three modes of anticoagulation-conventional unfractionated heparin (UFH), low molecular weight heparin (LMWH; dalteparin sodium), or sodium citrate during hemodialysis-on membrane-associated coagulation activation., Methods: Fifteen patients on regular hemodialysis therapy were investigated. Five patients received UFH, five patients LMWH, and five patients sodium citrate as an anticoagulant during a standardized hemodialysis protocol using a single-use polysulfone capillary dialyzer. Membrane-associated clotting was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope. A dialyzer clotting score was used for quantitative description of coagulation activation on membrane segments., Results: Using UFH as an anticoagulant revealed the most pronounced cell adhesion and thrombus formation and the highest dialyzer clotting score (11.5 +/- 1.3 of a maximal 20 points). LMWH had a lower dialyzer clotting score than UFH (10.4 +/- 1.2 of 20 points). During the use of sodium citrate, a negligible thrombus formation and the lowest dialyzer clotting score (1.6 +/- 0.6 of 20 points, P < 0.05) were observed., Conclusion: The results of this investigation indicate that using sodium citrate as an anticoagulant during hemodialysis induces a lower activation of coagulation than both conventional and fractionated heparin, which might contribute to an improvement of biocompatibility of hemodialysis extracorporeal circulation.

Leukocyte interactions with endothelial cell monolayers (ECM) and smooth muscle cells (SMC) play an important role during inflammatory processes. Several studies describe an inhibitory effect of dexamethasone on polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL), endothelial cell function, and interleukin-1 (IL-1) release. Aim of the current study was to investigate the influence of dexamethasone on leukocyte migration through an endothelial cell monolayer towards SMC-layers stimulated by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). Using a recently developed triple chamber migration system, SMC-layers were cultured on the bottom of a 24-well plate. On the upper surface of the first filter, ECM were cultured, the second filter was a collecting filter. The amount of leukocyte migration through ECM towards TNF-alpha-stimulated smooth muscle cell layers with and without dexamethasone-pretreatment was measured using a fluorescence technique. The pretreatment of SMC-layers with dexamethasone reduced the amount of leukocyte migration down to 92 +/- 8.8% (0.001 mM, p=n.s.), to 67 +/- 5.7% (0.01 mM, p<0.05), to 53 +/- 4.6% (0.1 mM, p<0.05), and to 41 +/- 5.0% (1 mM, p<0.05). In conclusion, dexamethasone treatment of smooth muscle cell layers inhibits leukocyte migration through ECM towards smooth muscle cell layers. The inhibition seems to be due to a decrease in IL-1 release. Treatment of all cell types, PMNL, endothelial cells, as well as smooth muscle cell layers, simulating an in-vivo situation, seems to have an additive effect.

Study Objective: To test the hypothesis that the correct depth of the endotracheal tube can be confirmed by transillumination method using the Trachlight device, which is a newly introduced lighted stylet for guided, blind tracheal intubation., Design: Prospective, nonrandomized pilot-trial., Setting: University-affiliated hospital., Patients: 72 intubated and mechanically ventilated critically ill adult patients., Interventions: Patients were briefly disconnected from the respirator. The centimeter marks of the Trachlight cather were brought into line with those of the endotracheal tube, resulting in congruence of the bulb of the Trachlight and the tube tip., Measurements and Main Results: To measure the distance from the tip of the tube to that of the sternal notch, the Trachlight wand was retracted without moving the endotracheal tube until the bright light appeared in the sternal notch. A chest radiograph was taken to measure the distance between the carina and the tip of the tube. The Trachlight showed a distance of 4.0 +/- 1.3 cm from the tip of the tube to the sternal notch. Chest radiography revealed a distance of 3.3 +/- 1.6 cm between the carina and the tip of the tube, so that the calculated distance between sternal notch and carina was 7.3 +/- 1.5 cm., Conclusion: To achieve proper depth of the endotracheal tube, it is recommended that the tip of the endotracheal tube be placed 3 cm beyond the sternal notch. The Trachlight provides a simple and easy technique to achieve this goal.

Examination of the interactions between various cells of the vascular wall and blood components are essential for understanding different pathophysiological processes. Such investigations require appropriate techniques. Several groups have attempted to establish different methods. In all blood vessels except capillaries, endothelial cells (EC) and smooth muscle cells (SMC) coexist and interact very closely. The current study describes a new 3-dimensional triple chamber migration assay, studying leukocyte migration through human endothelial cell monolayers (ECM) towards human SMC layers simultaneously. To test the new assay, SMC-layers were prestimulated with different concentrations of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha, 1 ng/ml, 10 ng/ml, 100 ng/ml) over 6 hours. Then, two microporous membranes, a collecting membrane and a third membrane with cultured ECM, were inserted. Freshly isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) were seeded on the ECM and transmigrated cells were measured after further 3 hours incubation. The migration against non stimulated SMC-layers was used as control. Prestimulated SMC-layers led to a dose dependent increase of PBMNC migration into the subendothelial cell space. Antibodies against interleukin-1 reduced the PBMNC migration. In conclusion, this assay allows to study cell migration into the subendothelial space and interactions between different vascular cells. Moreover, this assay can also be used for studies on other cell-cell interactions in man.

A patient presented with neck impalement after a traffic accident. Respiratory arrest demanded immediate tracheal intubation, which was impossible as a wooden splinter had partially obstructed the pharynx and prevented laryngoscopy. An oesophageal tracheal Combitube airway was inserted successfully and the patient's lungs were ventilated adequately until tracheotomy was performed.

The success of cardiopulmonary resuscitation after cardiac arrest depends not only on the duration of the arrest, but also on the prompt establishment of a patent airway. In this study, we tested the safety and promptness of intubation with esophageal tracheal combitube (ETC) when compared to conventional endotracheal airway. Effectiveness of ventilation via the ETC as shown by blood gas analyses appeared to be comparable to endotracheal airway. Data suggest that the ETC might serve as a useful device during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
