Introduction: Limited research has been conducted to determine how undergraduate dental students perceive team-teaching, especially when involving teachers from other allied dental professions. Therefore, the current study aimed to determine students’ perceptions of team-teaching in a preclinical dental materials science course. Methods: The current laboratory dental materials practical session was carried out for the second-year undergraduate dental students. The session was conducted solely by a dental technology lecturer in the dental technology laboratory. Students attended lectures on commonly used laboratory-based dental materials before the session comprising seven teaching and learning stations. 19 close-ended questions using 5-point Likert Scales to assess 4 domains (perception of learning, teacher, learning environment, and preference of learning) including 2 open-ended questions were administered at the end of the session. Mean scores for each questionnaire item were analysed, whereas content analysis was performed for open-ended responses. Result: The respondent rate was 100% (n = 68). Mean scores for domains 1, 2, 3, and 4 ranged from 4.35–4.69, 4.63–4.87, 4.53–4.69, and 2.93–3.74, respectively. Cronbach’s alpha value for all the questionnaire items was 0.85, while confirmatory factor analysis scores for all domains were >0.7, with 2 items being removed. Based on the open-ended responses, students enjoyed the communication between the teacher and students and wished to have more hands-on activity. Conclusion: Students generally showed positive perceptions towards their learning, teacher, and learning environment, despite showing mixed preference towards team-teaching. Additional research is required to evaluate teachers’ and policymakers’ perspectives as well as the impact of team-teaching on students' academic performance. Resumen: Introducción: Se han realizado una investigación limitada para determinar cómo perciben los estudiantes de odontología de pregrado la enseñanza en equipo, especialmente cuando involucra a docentes de otras profesiones dentales afines. Por lo tanto, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar las percepciones de los estudiantes sobre la enseñanza en equipo en un curso de ciencia de materiales dentales preclínicos. Métodos: La sesión práctica actual de materiales dentales de laboratorio se llevó a cabo para los estudiantes de odontología de segundo año. La sesión fue conducida únicamente por un docente de tecnología dental en el laboratorio de tecnología dental. Los estudiantes asistieron a conferencias sobre materiales dentales de laboratorio comúnmente utilizados antes de la sesión, que comprendía siete estaciones de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Se administraron 19 preguntas cerradas utilizando escalas Likert de cinco puntos para evaluar cuatro dominios (percepción del aprendizaje, del docente, del entorno de aprendizaje y preferencia de aprendizaje), incluyendo 2 preguntas abiertas al final de la sesión. Se analizaron las puntuaciones medias de cada ítem del cuestionario, mientras que se realizó un análisis de contenido para las respuestas abiertas. Resultado: La tasa de respuesta fue del 100% (n = 68). Las puntuaciones medias para los dominios 1, 2, 3 y 4 variaron oscilaron entre 4.35 y 4.69, 4.63 y 4.87, 4.53 y 4.69, y 2.93 y 3.74, respectivamente. El valor del Alfa de Cronbach para todos los ítems del cuestionario fue de 0.85, mientras que las puntuaciones del análisis factorial confirmatorio para todos los dominios fueron >0.7, con la eliminación de dos ítems. Basándose en las respuestas abiertas, los estudiantes disfrutaron de la comunicación entre el docente y los estudiantes y desearon tener más actividades prácticas. Conclusión: Los estudiantes generalmente mostraron percepciones positivas hacia su aprendizaje, maestro y entorno de aprendizaje, a pesar de tener preferencias mixtas hacia la enseñanza en equipo. Se requiere investigación adicional para evaluar las perspectivas de los docentes y los responsables políticos, así como el impacto de la enseñanza en equipo en el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes.

Background/purpose: The usage of bioceramic-based root canal sealers has escalated over the years due to their excellent properties. The present study aimed to fabricate a novel algin incorporated bioactive glass 58S calcium-silicate (Bio-G) sealer and characterise its surface microstructure and chemical compositions in comparison to commercially available bioceramic sealers (BioRoot RCS and iRoot SP). Materials and methods: The powder form of experimental Bio-G sealer consisted of synthesised BG 58S particle, calcium silicate, zirconia dioxide, calcium carbonate and alginic acid powder as binder. The liquid composed of 5% calcium chloride solution. Five standardised disc specimens were prepared for each sealer group according to the manufacturer's instructions. Subsequently, sealer disc-specimens were placed in an incubator at 37 °C, 95% relative humidity for 72 h to allow setting prior to testing under scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results: Experimental Bio-G sealer revealed irregular micro-sized particles ranging from 0.5 μm to 105 μm aggregated in clusters comparable to those of BioRoot RCS and iRoot SP. EDS microanalysis showed that Bio-G had high content of oxygen, silicon, and calcium, with the presence of aluminium and chloride similar to BioRoot RCS. Meanwhile, the FTIR and XRD findings suggested that all sealers predominantly contained calcium silicate hydrate, calcium carbonate, and zirconium dioxide, while calcium aluminium silicate oxide was detected in Bio-G. Conclusion: The present novel Bio-G sealer demonstrated desirable particle size distribution and acceptable degree of purity. Future studies are warranted to explore its properties and clinical application.

Objectives: Assess the impact of the Health Research Board (HRB) Ireland guidance on the uptake of core outcome sets (COSs)., Study Design and Setting: (1) Information on COS use, searching of the Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) database, and rationale for outcome selection were extracted from HRB funding applications (2) COMET was searched for relevant COS availability at the time of application or developed since (3) principal investigator choices were explored through online surveys., Results: Out of 187 funding applications, 44% (n = 82) searched the COMET database, and 13% (n = 11) of those found a relevant COS to inform their outcomes. Four applicants proposed COS development. However, 84% (n = 156) of applications had no relevant COS available at the time of submission, as identified by subsequent author COMET search. Among 84 principal investigators who participated in the surveys, 10 (12%) found and used a COS and 19 (42%) of the 45 respondents who did not have reference to COMET had searched the COMET database. A new question in the application form prompted a rise in those reporting a search of the COMET database from 6% to 99%., Conclusion: The study found low COS uptake in funding applications, but a new application question prompted an increase in reporting searches of the COMET database. Funder guidance promoted COS awareness and use, but more efforts are needed to facilitate COS development and adoption in clinical research., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc. The potential of Raman microspectroscopy of exfoliated cells has been demonstrated for oral cancer diagnosis. In this study, brush biopsies were collected from the buccal mucosa/tongue of healthy donors (n = 31) and from oral mucosal dysplastic lesions (n = 31 patients). Raman spectra were acquired and subjected to partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The patient samples could be differentiated from healthy donor samples with 96% sensitivity and 95% specificity. Furthermore, PLS-DA models were developed based on cytopathological and histopathological assessment. Low and high grade dysplasia could be discriminated with 64% sensitivity and 65% specificity based on cytopathological assessment, while 81% sensitivity and 86% specificity could be achieved when histopathological assessment was within six months of the brush biopsy sampling. Vibrational spectroscopy, based on either infrared absorption or Raman scattering, has attracted increasing attention for biomedical applications. Proof of concept explorations for diagnosis of oral potentially malignant disorders and cancer are reviewed, and recent advances critically appraised. Lymphangiectasias, or acquired lymphangiomas, are rare in the oral cavity, more typically occurring on the skin or the genital area and, to our knowledge, have not been reported previously in association with Crohn's disease. Lymphangiectasias can occur at any age and develop secondary to chronic obstruction of the lymphatics. This differentiates them from congenital lymphangiomas, which are congenital malformations of the lymphatic system. Background: Vulnerable preterm infants experience repeated and prolonged pain/stress stimulation during a critical period in their development while in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The contribution of cumulative pain/stressors to altered neurodevelopment remains unclear. The study purpose was to investigate the impact of early life painful/stressful experiences on neurobehavioral outcomes of preterm infants in the NICU., Methods: A prospective exploratory study was conducted with fifty preterm infants (28 0/7-32 6/7weeks gestational age) recruited at birth and followed for four weeks. Cumulative pain/stressors (NICU Infant Stressor Scale) were measured daily and neurodevelopmental outcomes (NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale) were examined at 36-37weeks post-menstrual age. Data analyses were conducted on the distribution of pain/stressors experienced over time and the linkages among pain/stressors and neurobehavioral outcomes., Results: Preterm infants experienced a high degree of pain/stressors in the NICU, both in numbers of daily acute events (22.97±2.30 procedures) and cumulative times of chronic/stressful exposure (42.59±15.02h). Both acute and chronic pain/stress experienced during early life significantly contributed to the neurobehavioral outcomes, particularly in stress/abstinence (p<0.05) and habituation responses (p<0.01), meanwhile, direct breastfeeding and skin-to-skin holding were also significantly associated with habituation (p<0.01-0.05)., Conclusion: Understanding mechanisms by which early life experience alters neurodevelopment will assist clinicians in developing targeted neuroprotective strategies and individualized interventions to improve infant developmental outcomes., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Circumorificial plasmacytosis is a rare plasma cell proliferative disorder of the orificial mucous membranes. The etiology is unknown, and there are no reported effective treatments to date. Objectives: Current recommendations for safe and effective dental management are less than optimal for some medical conditions because of limited evidence, conflicting conclusions, or both. This review (1) compiled and evaluated dental management recommendations for select medical conditions; (2) summarized recommendations and their assigned levels of evidence; (3) identified areas of conflict, ambiguity, or both; and (4) identified issues that warrant future research, enhanced consensus statements, or both., Study Design: Systematic literature searches were performed for guideline publications, systematic and narrative reviews, and opinion documents containing recommendations for (1) medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ); (2) cardiovascular diseases (CVDs); (3) prosthetic joints (PJs); and (4) systemic steroid therapy (SST)., Results: The search yielded the following numbers of publications that met the inclusion criteria: MRONJ - 116; CVDs - 54; prosthetic joints - 39; and systemic steroids - 12., Conclusions: Very few of the compiled recommendations were assigned or linked to levels of evidence by their authors. Key conclusions include the following: MRONJ-expert recommendations trend toward proceeding with dental treatment with little to no modification in osteoporotic patients on bisphosphonates; CVDs-current recommendations are primarily directed to general surgery and applied to dentistry; PJs-routine antibiotic prophylaxis is not indicated for dental treatment; and SST-steroid supplementation is not indicated for most patients undergoing dental procedures under local anesthesia., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. Objective: This study compared the efficacy of routine clinical evaluation with that of screening with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale for the detection of postpartum depression in a residency training program practice., Study Design: Three hundred ninety-one patients during a period of 1 year were assigned according to delivery date to screening for postpartum depression with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale or to a control group who had only spontaneous detection during routine clinical evaluation. The incidences of postpartum depression detection and demographic characteristics were compared between 79 patients in the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale group and 96 patients in the clinical evaluation group by means of chi(2) analyses., Results: The incidence of postpartum depression detection with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was significantly higher than the incidence of spontaneous detection during routine clinical evaluation (35.4% and 6.3%, respectively; P =.001)., Conclusions: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale is an effective adjunct to clinical interview for diagnosis of postpartum depression and should be considered in residency training.

Corneal epithelial cells synthesize an acidic (55 kDa) K12 and a basic (64 kDa) K3 keratin as their major differentiation products during an advanced stage of differentiation. In this paper, we describe the cDNA cloning of rabbit K12 keratin. We used a 36 base pairs (bp) oligonucleotide corresponding to a consensus sequence of many known acidic keratins as a probe to screen a cDNA library of normal rabbit corneal epithelium. Several partial cDNA clones were isolated. Hybrid-selection showed that the 3'keratin chain-specific portion of the cDNA hybridizes with K12 mRNA. A rabbit antiserum raised against the C-terminus of the cDNA-deduced amino acid sequence recognizes, in immunoblotting, the K12 keratin. In situ hybridization showed that K12 mRNA is present in all cell layers of central corneal epithelium, but in only the suprabasal cells of limbal epithelium indicating a parallel expression pattern between K12 and K3. Cultured rabbit corneal epithelial cells initially synthesize K14/K5 keratins, but later when the cells become heavily stratified they synthesize large quantities of K12 and K3 mRNAs, as detected by Northern blotting. Cultured esophageal epithelial cells do not make K12 mRNA confirming the tissue-specificity of K12 expression. Although it has been suggested that conjunctival epithelial cells can trans-differentiate into a bona fide corneal epithelium, we showed here that cultured conjunctival cells do not synthesize significant amounts of K12/K3 mRNAs. These results strongly suggest that conjunctival epithelial cells, whose differentiation can be modulated significantly by the extracellular matrix, form a lineage intrinsically distinct from the corneal/limbal epithelial lineage.
