Background: Currently, there is a lack of effective treatments or preventive strategies for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Pre-clinical studies with mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have yielded encouraging results. The safety of administering repeated intravenous doses of umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) has not yet been tested in extremely-low-gestational-age newborns (ELGANs)., Aims: to test the safety and feasibility of administering three sequential intravenous doses of UC-MSCs every 7 days to ELGANs at risk of developing BPD., Methods: In this phase 1 clinical trial, we recruited ELGANs (birth weight ≤1250 g and ≤28 weeks in gestational age [GA]) who were on invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) with FiO2 ≥ 0.3 at postnatal days 7-14. Three doses of 5 × 10 6 /kg of UC-MSCs were intravenously administered at weekly intervals. Adverse effects and prematurity-related morbidities were recorded., Results: From April 2019 to July 2020, 10 patients were recruited with a mean GA of 25.2 ± 0.8 weeks and a mean birth weight of 659.8 ± 153.8 g. All patients received three intravenous UC-MSC doses. The first dose was administered at a mean of 16.6 ± 2.9 postnatal days. All patients were diagnosed with BPD. All patients were discharged from the hospital. Traditionally, the management of rotator cuff tears in elderly individuals has involved surgical intervention, specifically biceps tenotomy. However, surgical procedures come with inherent medical risks and significant financial costs. As an alternative, ultrasound-guided biceps tenotomy combined with corticosteroid has emerged as a highly effective, well-tolerated, and cost-efficient option. Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLDs) represent a broad spectrum of lymphoid proliferations, frequently associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The molecular profile of pediatric monomorphic PTLDs (mPTLDs) has not been elucidated, and it is unknown whether they display similar genetic features as their counterpart in adult and immunocompetent (IMC) pediatric patients. In this study, we investigated 31 cases of pediatric mPTLD after solid organ transplantation, including 24 diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs), mostly classified as activated B cell, and 7 cases of Burkitt lymphoma (BL), 93% of which were EBV positive. We performed an integrated molecular approach, including fluorescence in situ hybridization, targeted gene sequencing, and copy number (CN) arrays. Overall, PTLD-BL carried mutations in MYC, ID3, DDX3X, ARID1A, or CCND3 resembling IMC-BL, higher mutational burden than PTLD-DLBCL, and lesser CN alterations than IMC-BL. PTLD-DLBCL showed a very heterogeneous genomic profile with fewer mutations and CN alterations than IMC-DLBCL. Epigenetic modifiers and genes of the Notch pathway were the most recurrently mutated in PTLD-DLBCL (both 28%). Mutations in cell cycle and Notch pathways correlated with a worse outcome. All 7 patients with PTLD-BL were alive after treatment with pediatric B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma protocols, whereas 54% of patients with DLBCL were cured with immunosuppression reduction, rituximab, and/or low-dose chemotherapy. These findings highlight the low complexity of pediatric PTLD-DLBCL, their good response to low-intensity treatment, and the shared pathogenesis between PTLD-BL and EBV-positive IMC-BL. Introduction: It has been reported that after vaccination with RNAm or viral vectors from SARS-CoV-2 a significant number of solid organ transplant recipients do not develop an effective immune response. In this scenario, the use of tixagevimab-cilgavimab was approved by the European Medicines Agency for COVID-19 prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients in March 2022. We present our experience with a group of kidney transplant recipients who received prophylactic treatment with tixagevimab-cilgavimab., Material and Methods: Prospective study from a cohort of kidney transplant recipients who had been previously vaccinated with 4 doses and did not achieve a satisfactory immune response to vaccination, presenting antibody titers lower than 260 BAU/mL when measured by ELISA. A total of 55 patients who received a single dose of 150 mg of tixagevimab and 150 mg of cilgavimab between May and September of 2022 were included in this study., Results: No immediate or severe adverse reactions, including worsening of kidney function, were observed after administering the drug or during follow up. All patients who had received the drug 3 months prior presented positive antibody titers (> 260 BAU/mL). Seven patients were diagnosed with COVID, and one of those patients had to be admitted to the hospital and died 5 days later from infectious complications and a suspected diagnosis of bacterial coinfection., Conclusions: In our experience, all kidney transplant recipients reached antibody titers higher than 260 BAU/mL 3 months after receiving prophylactic treatment with tixagevimab-cilgavimab with no severe or irreversible adverse reactions., (© 2023 Sociedad Española de Nefrología. Purpose: To describe the evolution of the serum levels of soluble HLA-G (s-HLA-G) during the first 12 months after heart transplantation (HT) and to correlate it with clinical outcomes., Methods: Observational study based in a single-center cohort of 59 patients who underwent HT between December-2003 and March-2010. Soluble HLA-G levels were measured from serum samples extracted before HT, and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after HT. The cumulative burden of s-HLA-G expression during the first post-transplant year was assessed by means of the area under the curve (AUC) of s-HLA-G levels over time and correlated with the acute rejection burden -as assessed by a rejection score-, the presence of coronary allograft vasculopathy (CAV) grade ≥ 1 and infections during the first post-transplant year; as well as with long-term patient and graft survival. Mean follow-up was 12.4 years., Results: Soluble HLA-G levels decreased over the first post-transplant year (p = 0.020). The AUC of s-HLA-G levels during the first post-transplant year was higher among patients with infections vs. those without infections (p = 0.006). No association was found between the AUC of s-HLA-G levels and the burden of acute rejection or the development of CAV. Overall long-term survival, long-term survival free of late graft failure and cancer-free survival were not significantly different in patients with an AUC of s-HLA-G levels higher or lower than the median of the study population., Conclusions: Soluble HLA-G levels decreased over the first year after HT. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze whether subgroups of immunosuppressive (IS) medications conferred different outcomes in COVID-19., Methods: The study involved a multicenter retrospective cohort of consecutive immunosuppressed patients (ISPs) hospitalized with COVID-19 from March to July, 2020. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. A propensity score-matched (PSM) model comparing ISP and non-ISP was planned, as well as specific PSM models comparing individual IS medications associated with mortality., Results: Out of 16 647 patients, 868 (5.2%) were on chronic IS therapy prior to admission and were considered ISPs. In the PSM model, ISPs had greater in-hospital mortality (OR 1.25, 95% CI 0.99-1.62), which was related to a worse outcome associated with chronic corticoids (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.43-2.49). Other IS drugs had no repercussions with regard to mortality risk (including calcineurin inhibitors (CNI); OR 1.19, 95% CI 0.65-2.20). In the pre-planned specific PSM model involving patients on chronic IS treatment before admission, corticosteroids were associated with an increased risk of mortality (OR 2.34, 95% CI 1.43-3.82)., Conclusions: Chronic IS therapies comprise a heterogeneous group of drugs with different risk profiles for severe COVID-19 and death. Chronic systemic corticosteroid therapy is associated with increased mortality. Specialized paediatric and neonatal transport is a useful and essential resource in the interhospital transfer of these patients. It allows bringing the material and personal resources of an intensive care unit closer to the regional hospitals where the patient can be found. The benefits of these teams are very well demonstrated in the literature. These units should be part of the emergency systems, while it would be recommended that they be staff integrated in the tertiary hospitals, in order to maintain the necessary skills and competencies. The team, made up of physicians, nurses and emergency medical technicians, must master both the pathophysiology of transport and that of the critical patient in this age range. A high quality of both human and care is important, so continuous training and periodic recycling will be essential to be compliant with the quality indicators in transport. Likewise, it is essential to have specific vehicles adapted to this function, which allow carrying the wide variety of necessary material, as well as the electromedicine that is required. However, in Spain this paediatric and neonatal transport model is not standardized and therefore is not homogeneous: there are different models that do not always provide adequate quality, making it necessary to implement specialized units throughout the country to guarantee sanitary transport quality to any critical child or neonate., (Copyright © 2021 Asociación Española de Pediatría. The disc of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located between the mandibular condyle and temporal bone, and has an important load-bearing and stress absorbing function. The TMJ disc presents viscoelastic characteristics that are largely dependent on its collagen fibre and proteoglycan composition and organization. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible effects of region-specific dynamic viscoelastic properties on stress relaxation during prolonged clenching. Two finite element models were used to compare the stress distribution within the TMJ disc, namely, one with uniform disc material property and another one with region-specific disc material properties. Similar results were observed in both models with slight differences in the location of maximum stress. Larger stresses were observed in all cases for the model with uniform disc material property. Moreover, the higher values for the model with uniform disc material property appeared in the lateral region, while in the model with region-specific disc properties, these values moved to the lateral and central region. This investigation confirms that both models are sufficiently accurate to investigate stress distribution in the TMJ disc, and, particularly, the model with the region-specific disc material properties ensure better simulations of the TMJ disc behaviour., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: The present study aimed to determine the association between chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), sociodemographic aspects, and health conditions with COVID-19 mortality in Colombia., Methods: We performed an ecological study using data at the municipality level. We used COVID-19 data obtained from government public reports up to and including July 17th, 2020. We defined PM 2.5 long-term exposure as the 2014-2018 average of the estimated concentrations at municipalities obtained from the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service Reanalysis (CAMSRA) model. We fitted a logit-negative binomial hurdle model for the mortality rate adjusting for sociodemographic and health conditions., Results: Estimated mortality rate ratios (MRR) for long-term average PM 2.5 were not statistically significant in either of the two components of the hurdle model (i.e., the likelihood of reporting at least one death or the count of fatal cases). We found that having 10% or more of the population over 65 years of age (MRR = 3.91 95%CI 2.24-6.81), the poverty index (MRR = 1.03 95%CI 1.01-1.05), and the prevalence of hypertension over 6% (MRR = 1.32 95%CI1.03-1.68) are the main factors associated with death rate at the municipality level. Having higher hospital beds capacity is inversely correlated to mortality., Conclusions: There was no evidence of an association between long-term exposure to PM 2.5 and COVID-19 mortality rate at the municipality level in Colombia. Demographics, health system capacity, and social conditions did have evidence of an ecological effect on COVID-19 mortality. A facile and greener methodology to obtain pure chitosan-based 3D porous structures in the form of monoliths and films is proposed. It is based on a modified evaporation-induced phase separation process in a chitosan solution precursor. In this approach, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) is used as the nonsolvent system and an ecofriendly, cost effective, simple and versatile alternative for the production of highly structured chitosan materials. The porous heterogeneous structure can be fine-tuned by varying the chitosan content in the precursor solution and chitosan/DES ratio, and enabled the structured polymer to absorb large amounts of water to form hydrogels. This is a versatile and unexplored approach to design porous chitosan with tailored morphology in the absence of crosslinkers, which, based on preliminary studies on V. cholerae biofilm formation, is expected to open new avenues for various applications in biomedical, catalysis, water purification, filtration and other areas where the control of bacterial biofilm formation is critical., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Single-use technologies are increasingly used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Despite their advantages, these plastic assemblies draw concern because they are a potential source of contamination due to extractable and leachable compounds (E&Ls). Characterising E&Ls from such materials is a necessary step in establishing their suitability for use. Therefore, there is an urgent need for sensitive methods to identify and quantitatively assess compounds in plastic materials. Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) is a powerful technique that can be reliably used for this purpose. In this study, ASE followed by liquid chromatography and Orbitrap-based High Resolution Accurate Mass (HRAM) mass analysis was found to be an efficient and versatile method for the determination of additives in different multilayer polymer systems from single-use bags. ASE optimisation was performed using a design of experiments approach. The type of solvent, temperature, swelling agent addition, static time and number of cycles were the selected variables. Optimum conditions were dependent on the type of plastic film. Ethyl acetate and cyclohexane were selected individually as optimum solvents. Optimum temperatures were 90-100 °C. Pressure was set at 1500 psi and extraction time was 30 min in 2 cycles. Swelling agent addition was necessary with polar extraction solvents. More than 100 additives and degradation products were confidently identified by HRAM MS. Correlations between the type and levels of identified additives and the type of polymer system were established. Background: Several studies have proved that physical activity (PA) regulates energetic metabolism associated with mitochondrial dynamics through AMPK activation in healthy subjects. Obesity, a condition that induces oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and low AMPK activity leads to mitochondrial fragmentation. However, few studies describe the effect of PA on mitochondrial dynamics regulation in obesity., Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a single session of PA on mitochondrial dynamics regulation as well as its effect on mitochondrial function and organization in skeletal muscles of obese rats (Zucker fa/fa)., Main Methods: Male Zucker lean and Zucker fa/fa rats aged 12 to 13 weeks were divided into sedentary and subjected-to-PA (single session swimming) groups. Gastrocnemius muscle was dissected into isolated fibers, mitochondria, mRNA, and total proteins for their evaluation., Key Findings: The results showed that PA increased the Mfn-2 protein level in the lean and obese groups, whereas Drp1 levels decreased in the obese group. OMA1 protease levels increased in the lean group and decreased in the obese group. Additionally, AMPK analysis parameters (expression, protein level, and activity) did not increase in the obese group. Objective: Depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder have been widely reported in patients with dystonia. On the other hand, cognitive impairment, frontal lobe function, impulsiveness and pseudobulbar affect are less studied. The objective of the study is to assess these neuropsychiatric symptoms along with the quality of life of subjects with craniocervical dystonia., Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in patients with craniocervical dystonia. Sex- and age-matched healthy controls were included. Neuropsychiatric assessment included the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), Barrat Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), Center for Neurologic Study-Lability Scale (CNS-LS), Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), and the 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12)., Results: A total of 44 patients with craniocervical dystonia and 44 controls were included. The mean age was 57 ± 13.7 years. Depression (56.1 % vs 9.1 %, p < 0.001), anxiety (56.8 % vs 6.8 %, p < 0.001), and pseudobulbar affect (31.8 % vs 9.1 %, p = 0.02) were more common in the dystonia group in comparison to controls. No difference between groups was found in impulsiveness (p = 0.65), MoCA score (p = 0.14) or executive dysfunction (p = 0.42). Quality of life was worst in the dystonia group with 90.9 % (p = 0.03) and 61.4 % (p < 0.001) of the subjects scoring under average in the Physical Composite Score (PCS) and Mental Composite Score (MCS) of the SF-12., Conclusion: MoCA scores ≤18, pseudobulbar affect, depression and anxiety are more prevalent in subjects with craniocervical dystonia in comparison to sex- and age-matched healthy controls. It is well-known that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can escape to intracellular or extracellular compartments under different stress conditions, yet understanding their escape mechanisms remains a challenge. Although Bax/Bak pores and VDAC oligomers are the strongest possibilities, other mechanisms may be involved. For example, mitochondria permeability transition, altered mitophagy, and mitochondrial dynamics are associated with intracellular mtDNA escape, while extracellular traps and extracellular vesicles can participate in extracellular mtDNA escape. The evidence suggests that mtDNA escape is a complex event with more than one mechanism involved. In addition, once the mtDNA is outside the mitochondria, the effects can be complex. Different danger signal sensors recognize the mtDNA as a damage-associated molecular pattern, triggering an innate immune inflammatory response that can be observed in multiple metabolic diseases characterized by chronic inflammation, including autoimmune diseases, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disorders. Anterior cruciate ligament revision surgery poses a number of specific difficulties. These include the lack of bone mass to enable effective fixation of the reconstruction, morbidity of the donor area when bone autograft is used to fill the tunnels, and absence of the semitendinosus and gracilis homolateral tendons in cases in which they have already been used in the primary surgical procedure. To address all these problems, we describe a 2-stage revision technique that uses bone allograft for tunnel filling and Achilles allograft for ligament reconstruction. In addition, the intervention includes an extra-articular phase in which the anterolateral ligament is reinforced to increase the rotational stability of the knee, thus improving the prognosis of operation., (© 2019 by the Arthroscopy Association of North America. Treatment of pediatric acute leukemia might involve combined therapies targeting the FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) receptor (i.e. quizartinib - AC220) and nucleotide metabolism (cytarabine - AraC). This study addressed the possibility of FLT3 modulating nucleoside salvage processes and, eventually, cytarabine action. Bone marrow samples from 108 pediatric leukemia patients (B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia, BCP-ALL: 83; T-ALL: 9; acute myeloid leukemia, AML: 16) were used to determine the mRNA expression levels of FLT3, the cytarabine activating kinase dCK, and the nucleotidases cN-II and SAMHD1. FLT3 mRNA levels positively correlated with dCK, cN-II and SAMHD1 in the studied cohort. FLT3 inhibition using AC220 promoted the expression of cN-II in MV4-11 cells. Indeed, inhibition of cN-II with anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid (AdiS) further potentiated the synergistic action of AC220 and cytarabine, at low concentrations of this nucleoside analog. FLT3 inhibition also down-regulated phosphorylated forms of SAMHD1 in MV4-11 and SEM cells. Thus, inhibition of FLT3 may also target the biochemical machinery associated with nucleoside salvage, which may modulate the ability of nucleoside-derived drugs. In summary, this contribution highlights the need to expand current knowledge on the mechanistic events linking tyrosine-kinase receptors, likely to be druggable in cancer treatment, and nucleotide metabolism, particularly considering tumor cells undergo profound metabolic reprogramming., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Equipoise exists regarding the benefit of adjuvant therapy (AT) in patients with gallbladder cancer (GBC). The aim of this study was to critically review the available evidence for the effectiveness of AT in patients with GBC following surgery with curative intent., Methods: A systematic review was performed. Relevant studies were identified from Trip Database, BIREME-BVS, SciELO, Cochrane Central Register, WoS, MEDLINE, EMBASE and SCOPUS. Adjuvant therapies considered included chemotherapy, chemoradiotherapy, and radiotherapy. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS). Subgorup analysis of patients with positive lymph node disease (PLND), positive surgical margin (PSM), or advanced stage (AS) were performed., Results: 748 related articles were identified; 27 met the selection criteria (3 systematic reviews and 24 observational studies). Evidence provided was moderate, poor and very poor for chemotherapy, chemoradiotherapy, and radiotherapy. Existing evidence is not robust, but suggests certain benefits with AT in improving OS, especially in patients with PLND, PSM and AS., Conclusion: Results do not provide strong evidence that AT is effective in patients who undergo resection for GBC. Subgroups of PLND and PSM may have a survival advantage. Herpes zoster is caused by the reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus from dorsal root ganglia. Although infrequent, simultaneous damage to the anterior horn cells or anterior nerve roots at the same level may result in motor neuropathy. When motor involvement is localized in the abdominal wall, a pseudohernia may be the clinical presentation. We report a case of abdominal wall post-herpetic pseudohernia, with clinical, ultrasound and MRI correlation. MRI demonstrated increased T2/STIR signal intensity in the abdominal wall muscles, suggesting acute denervation. Hypothyroidism (Hypo) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure. Hypo rapidly induces Ca 2+ mishandling and contractile dysfunction (CD), as well as atrophy and ventricular myocytes (VM) remodeling. Hypo decreases SERCA-to-phospholamban ratio (SERCA/PLB), and thereby contributes to CD. Nevertheless, detailed spatial and temporal Ca 2+ cycling characterization in VM is missing, and contribution of other structural and functional changes to the mechanism underlying Ca 2+ mishandling and CD, as transverse tubules (T-T) remodeling, mitochondrial density (D mit ) and energy availability, is unclear. Therefore, in a rat model of Hypo, we aimed to characterize systolic and diastolic Ca 2+ signaling, T-T remodeling, D mit , citrate synthase (CS) activity and high-energy phosphate metabolites (ATP and phosphocreatine). We confirmed a decrease in SERCA/PLB (59%), which slowed SERCA activity (48%), reduced SR Ca 2+ (19%) and blunted Ca 2+ transient amplitude (41%). Moreover, assessing the rate of SR Ca 2+ release (dRel/dt), we found that early and maximum dRel/dt decreased, and this correlated with staggered Ca 2+ transients. However, dRel/dt persisted during Ca 2+ transient relaxation due to abundant late Ca 2+ sparks. Isoproterenol significantly up-regulated systolic Ca 2+ cycling. T-T were unchanged, hence, cannot explain staggered Ca 2+ transients and altered dRel/dt. Therefore, we suggest that these might be caused by RyR2 clusters desynchronization, due to diminished Ca 2+ -dependent sensitivity of RyR2, which also caused a decrease in diastolic SR Ca 2+ leak. Furthermore, D mit was unchanged and CS activity slightly decreased (14%), however, the ratio phosphocreatine/ATP did not change, therefore, energy deficiency cannot account for Ca 2+ and contractility dysregulation. Background: The effects of individualised perioperative lung-protective ventilation (based on the open-lung approach [OLA]) on postoperative complications is unknown. We aimed to investigate the effects of intraoperative and postoperative ventilatory management in patients scheduled for abdominal surgery, compared with standard protective ventilation., Methods: We did this prospective, multicentre, randomised controlled trial in 21 teaching hospitals in Spain. We enrolled patients who were aged 18 years or older, were scheduled to have abdominal surgery with an expected time of longer than 2 h, had intermediate-to-high-risk of developing postoperative pulmonary complications, and who had a body-mass index less than 35 kg/m 2 . Patients were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1) online to receive one of four lung-protective ventilation strategies using low tidal volume plus positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP): open-lung approach (OLA)-iCPAP (individualised intraoperative ventilation [individualised PEEP after a lung recruitment manoeuvre] plus individualised postoperative continuous positive airway pressure [CPAP]), OLA-CPAP (intraoperative individualised ventilation plus postoperative CPAP), STD-CPAP (standard intraoperative ventilation plus postoperative CPAP), or STD-O 2 (standard intraoperative ventilation plus standard postoperative oxygen therapy). Patients were masked to treatment allocation. Investigators were not masked in the operating and postoperative rooms; after 24 h, data were given to a second investigator who was masked to allocations. The primary outcome was a composite of pulmonary and systemic complications during the first 7 postoperative days. We did the primary analysis using the modified intention-to-treat population. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02158923., Findings: Between Jan 2, 2015, and May 18, 2016, we enrolled 1012 eligible patients. Data were available for 967 patients, whom we included in the final analysis. Risk of pulmonary and systemic complications did not differ for patients in OLA-iCPAP (110 [46%] of 241, relative risk 0·89 [95% CI 0·74-1·07; p=0·25]), OLA-CPAP (111 [47%] of 238, 0·91 [0·76-1·09; p=0·35]), or STD-CPAP groups (118 [48%] of 244, 0·95 [0·80-1·14; p=0·65]) when compared with patients in the STD-O 2 group (125 [51%] of 244). Inference generation is a crucial skill in language comprehension. Recent research suggests that readers use both the contents from prior written text and their background knowledge, stored in long-term memory, to generate predictive inferences about what will come up next in a sentence. We recorded Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) to examine the reader's ability to make online inferences even in the presence of pseudowords (orthographically legal, but meaningless letter strings), that is, in the presence of referents with no a priori match to vocabulary stored knowledge. As expected, a large and sustained negativity (250-900ms) was elicited by the target word 'fly' when preceded by the pseudoword 'Sias' in the sentence 'Sias fly.' relative to when preceded by 'Birds' in the sentence 'Birds fly'. However, when readers were provided with an initial statement inviting to make an inference: 'Sias have wings', the word 'fly' in 'Sias fly' only elicited a negative voltage deflection over 100ms period (250-350), rapidly falling down to baseline. This result indicates that participants rapidly generated online inferences even with a hindered access to a referent's meaning (i.e. not knowing what 'Sias' are). Remarkably, brainwave traces to the access to a word's meaning in long-term memory (access to a well-known fact such as 'Birds fly') only diverged from ERPs for an inferred-from-reading knowledge ('Sias fly') for 100ms. We conclude that a fundamental search for across sentence coherence drives fast inference making processes in reading tasks. Cardiac hypertrophy is a compensatory mechanism maladapted because it presents an increase in the oxidative stress which could be associated with the development of the heart failure. A mechanism proposed is by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) oxidation, which evolved to a vicious cycle because of the synthesis of proteins encoded in the genome is committed. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the mtDNA damage and enzyme repairing the 8-oxo-deoxyguanosine glycosylase mitochondrial isoform 1-2a (OGG1-2a) in the early stage of compensated cardiac hypertrophy induced by abdominal aortic constriction (AAC). Results showed that after 6 weeks of AAC, hearts presented a compensated hypertrophy (22%), with an increase in the cell volume (35%), mitochondrial mass (12%), and mitochondrial membrane potential (94%). However, the increase of oxidative stress did not affect mtDNA most probably because OGG1-2a was found to increase 3.2 times in the mitochondrial fraction. Besides, mitochondrial function was not altered by the cardiac hypertrophy condition but in vitro mitochondria from AAC heart showed an increased sensibility to stress induced by the high Ca 2+ concentration. The increase in the oxidative stress in compensated cardiac hypertrophy induced the OGG1-2a migration to mitochondria to repair mtDNA oxidation, as a mechanism that allows maintaining the cardiac function in the compensatory stage., (Copyright © 2017 American Society of Hypertension. Despite their advantages, there is concern that single-use systems used in biopharmaceutical manufacture might release potentially toxic substances during standard unit operations that negatively impact cell growth. Characterization of the extractables profile for single-use systems is necessary to know which compounds potentially become leachables under operational cell culture conditions. A key issue in the design of extractables studies is the composition of the model solvent, in particular its pH and polarity. In this study, a new approach, based on design of experiments (DoE), has been applied to determine the composition of the model solvent for extractable profiling of single-use bags (SUBs). Particular focus was placed on the determination of the degradation products of the antioxidant Irgafos 168 ® , due to evidence that some of these degradation products have cytotoxic effects on CHO cells. Results indicated that 2-propanol:water is the most appropriate solvent for the extraction of highly hydrophobic compounds with polar groups and/or acid-base properties from SUBs. The described DoE approach simplifies the number of experiments, evaluates all possible solvent water mixtures to select the best extraction solvent based on polarity, establishes the influence of each variable and provides information about variable interaction, which represents an important improvement over current best practice. The aim of this study was to compare a quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) validated for the detection of Leishmania infantum in dogs with a nested PCR but in wild Leporidae. Additionally, L. infantum results from indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and in vitro culture were also compared with qPCR. Different samples (spleen, skin and hair) recovered from 224 European rabbits and 70 Iberian hares from two green areas of Madrid Council were analysed for the detection of L. infantum. The presence of Leishmania kDNA was detected by qPCR in 58 out of 221 (26.24%), 162 out of 203 (79.8%) and 22 out of 33 (66.67%) analysed rabbits on spleen, skin and hair samples, respectively; and in 7 out of 69 (10.14%), 39 out of 70 (55.71%) and 17 out of 32 (53.13%) test hares on spleen, skin and hair samples, respectively. The qPCR in all test samples resulted to be more sensitive than nested PCR, with a limit of detection of 1.43 fg/reaction (0.039 parasites) for L. infantum genomic DNA. Additionally, the percentage of positive animals detected by qPCR in at least two out of three samples (n=221 rabbits and 70 hares) tested was higher than those detected by IFAT (n=190 rabbits and 61 hares) and isolation (n=75 rabbits and 20 hares). The highest level of agreement was obtained by nested PCR on spleen/skin (89%/83%) samples and qPCR on spleen samples (81%), followed by IFAT (48%) and qPCR on skin (32%) samples. Our results demonstrate this qPCR is a suitable method for detecting L. infantum DNA in different samples suggesting hair could be considered an adequate sample for direct, reliable and non-invasive diagnosis of L. infantum in wild animals., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. A method for the identification of leachables in chemically defined media for CHO cell culture using dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and UHPLC-MS is described. A Box-Behnken design of experiments (DoE) approach was applied to obtain the optimum extraction conditions of the target analytes. Performance of DLLME as extraction technique was studied by comparison of two commercial chemically defined media for CHO cell culture. General extraction conditions for any group of leachables, regardless of their specific chemical functionalities can be applied and similar optimum conditions were obtained with the two media. Extraction efficiency and matrix effects were determined. The method was validated using matrix-matched standard calibration followed by recovery assays with spiked samples. Finally, cell culture media was incubated in 7 single use bioreactors (SUBs) from different vendors and analysed. TBPP was not detected in any of the samples, whereas DtBP and TBPP-ox were found in all samples, with bDtBPP detected in six SUBs. Purpose: This work shows an effective methodology to characterize the creep-recovery behavior of silicones before their application in podiatry. The aim is to characterize, model and compare the creep-recovery properties of different types of silicone used in podiatry orthotics., Methods: Creep-recovery phenomena of silicones used in podiatry orthotics is characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Silicones provided by Herbitas are compared by observing their viscoelastic properties by Functional Data Analysis (FDA) and nonlinear regression. The relationship between strain and time is modeled by fixed and mixed effects nonlinear regression to compare easily and intuitively podiatry silicones., Results: Functional ANOVA and Kohlrausch-Willians-Watts (KWW) model with fixed and mixed effects allows us to compare different silicones observing the values of fitting parameters and their physical meaning. The differences between silicones are related to the variations of breadth of creep-recovery time distribution and instantaneous deformation-permanent strain. Nevertheless, the mean creep-relaxation time is the same for all the studied silicones. Silicones used in palliative orthoses have higher instantaneous deformation-permanent strain and narrower creep-recovery distribution., Conclusions: The proposed methodology based on DMA, FDA and nonlinear regression is an useful tool to characterize and choose the proper silicone for each podiatry application according to their viscoelastic properties., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. In Ca(2+)-overloaded ventricular myocytes, SERCA is crucial to steadily achieve the critical sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca(2+) level to trigger and sustain Ca(2+) waves, that propagate at constant rate (ʋwave). High luminal Ca(2+) sensitizes RyR2, thereby increasing Ca(2+) sparks frequency, and the larger RyR2-mediated SR Ca(2+) flux (dF/dt) sequentially activates adjacent RyR2 clusters. Recently, it was proposed that rapid SERCA Ca(2+) reuptake, ahead of the wave front, further sensitizes RyR2, increasing ʋwave. Nevertheless, this is controversial because rapid cytosolic Ca(2+) removal could instead impair RyR2 activation. We assessed whether rapid SR Ca(2+) uptake enhances ʋwave by changing SERCA activity (ҡDecay) over a large range (∼175%). We used normal (Ctrl) and hyperthyroid rat (HT; reduced phospholamban by ∼80%) myocytes treated with thapsigargin or isoproterenol (ISO). We found that ʋwave and dF/dt had a non-linear dependency with ҡDecay, while Ca(2+) waves amplitude was largely unaffected. Furthermore, SR Ca(2+) also showed a non-linear dependency with ҡDecay, however, the relationships ʋwave vs. SR Ca(2+) and ʋwave vs. dF/dt were linear, suggesting that high steady state SR Ca(2+) determines ʋwave, while rapid SERCA Ca(2+) uptake does not. An accurate and sensitive method for the determination of selected EDCs in soil and compost from wastewater treatment plants is developed and validated. Five parabens, six benzophenone-UV filters and the antibacterials triclosan and triclocarban were selected as target analytes. The parameters for ultrasound-assisted extraction were thoroughly optimized. After extraction, the analytes were detected and quantified using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Ethylparaben (ring-(13)C6 labelled) and deuterated benzophenone (BP-d10) were used as internal standards. The method was validated using matrix-matched calibration and recovery assays with spiked samples. The limits of detection ranged from 0.03 to 0.40 ng g(-1) and the limits of quantification from 0.1 to 1.0 ng g(-1), while precision in terms of relative standard deviation was between 9% and 21%. Recovery rates ranged from 83% to 107%. The validated method was applied for the study of the behavior of the selected compounds in agricultural soils treated and un-treated with compost from WWTP. A lixiviation study was developed in both agricultural soil and treated soil and first order kinetic models of their disappearance at different depths are proposed. The application of organic composts in the soil leads to an increase of the disappearance rate of the studied compounds. The lixiviation study also shows the risk of pollution of groundwater aquifers after disposal or waste of these EDCs in agricultural soils is not high., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Aims: Obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) frequently coexist and increase the propensity of cardiovascular dysfunction by numerous mechanisms. Chief among them are oxidative stress and Ca(2+) dysregulation, and both are inducers of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP). Nevertheless, it is unknown whether MPTP formation is triggered in DM2 animals, and thereby contributing to cardiac dysfunction. We assessed MPTP sensitivity and reactive oxygen species production in cardiac mitochondria, as well as cytosolic Ca(2+) handling in ventricular myocytes from rats with DM2., Main Methods: Male Zucker Fa/fa rats (Fa/fa) 32weeks old presenting DM2, concentric hypertrophy, and diastolic dysfunction were used. MPTP formation was evaluated in isolated mitochondria and Ca(2+) handling in ventricular myocytes, by spectrophotometric and confocal microscope techniques, respectively., Key Findings: We found that the systolic Ca(2+) transient relaxation was ~40% slower, while mitochondrial H2O2 production increased by ~6-fold. MPTP opening in isolated mitochondria from Fa/fa (mFa/fa) was more sensitive to Ca(2+) than in mitochondria from lean rats (mLean), and correlated with increased thiol group exposure. The mFa/fa showed decreased oxidative phosphorylation capacity. The ATP content decreased in myocytes, while the PCr/ATP ratio remained unchanged and caspase 9 activity largely increased in myocytes from Fa/fa animals., Significance: Our results showed that oxidative stress and diastolic Ca(2+) dysregulation increased MPTP sensitivity leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis. Mitochondrial dysfunction could compromise ATP synthesis, and lower ATP could be linked to decreased SERCA2 activity, which might underlie diastolic dysfunction. A sensitive and accurate analytical method for the determination of methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butylparaben and bisphenol A in human milk samples has been developed and validated. The combination of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and a simplified and rapid clean-up technique that uses sorbent materials has been successfully applied for the preparation of samples prior to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) analysis. The analytes were extracted from freeze-dried human milk samples using acetonitrile and ultrasonic radiation (three 15-min cycles at 70% amplitude), and further cleaned-up with C18 sorbents. The most influential parameters affecting the UAE method and the clean-up steps were optimized using design of experiments. Negative electrospray ionization (ESI) in the selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode was used for MS detection. The use of two reactions for each compound allowed simultaneous quantification and identification in one run. The analytes were separated in less than 10min. Deuterium-labeled ethylparaben-d5 (EPB-d5) and deuterium-labeled bisphenol A-d16 (BPA-d16) were used as surrogates. The limits of quantification ranged from 0.4 to 0.7ngmL(-1), while inter- and intra-day variability was under 11.1% in all cases. In the absence of certified reference materials, recovery assays with spiked samples using matrix-matched calibration were used to validate the method. Recovery rates ranged from 93.8% to 112.2%. The use of compost from sewage sludge for agricultural application is nowadays increasing, since composting is recognized as one of the most important recycling options for this material, being a source of nutrients for plants but also of contamination by persistent pollutants. In the present work, a multi-residue analytical method for the determination of 17 quinolone antibiotic residues in compost using multivariate optimization strategies and ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry has been developed. It is based on the use of microwave-assisted extraction at drastic conditions with ACN:m-phosphoric acid (1% w/v) for 5 min at 120°C, in order to achieve a quantitative extraction of the compounds (>76% of extraction recovery). Extracts were cleaned-up by salt-assisted liquid-liquid extraction (SALLE) with NaCl at pH 1.5 (with HClO4) and then using a dispersive sorbent (PSA). After LC separation, the MS conditions, in positive electrospray ionization mode (ESI), were individually optimized for each analyte to obtain maximum sensitivity in the selected reaction monitoring mode (SRM). The analytes were separated in less than 7 min. Cincophen was used as surrogate standard. The limits of detection ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 ng g(-1), and the limits of the quantification from 0.5 to 1.5 ng g(-1), while intra- and inter-day variability (% RSD) was under 7% in all cases. A recovery assay was performed with spiked samples. Recoveries ranging from 95.3% to 106.2% were obtained. Cleanup procedure reduced significantly matrix effects, which constitutes an important achievement, considering the important drawbacks of matrix components in quality and validation parameters. This method was applied to several commercial compost samples. Only 6 of the studied antibiotics were not detected in any of the samples. The antibiotics with the highest concentrations were ciprofloxacin (836 ng g(-1)), ofloxacin (719 ng g(-1)), and enrofloxacin (674 ng g(-1)), which were also the only ones found in all the analyzed samples. A new sample preparation method for the determination of five benzophenone UV-filters in human breast milk has been developed. The procedure involves the lyophilization of the sample, and its subsequent extraction by ultrasound sonication using acetonitrile. In order to reduce matrix effects produced by milk components that are coextracted, mainly proteins, sugars and lipids, a further clean-up step with a mixture of dispersive-SPE sorbents, C18 and PSA, was applied. Extraction parameters were optimized using experimental design, and the compounds were detected and quantified by ultrahigh performance liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) in positive ESI mode. Analytes were separated in 10 min. BP-d10 was used as internal standard. The limits of detection (LODs) were between 0.1 and 0.2 ng mL(-1), and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were between 0.3 and 0.6 ng mL(-1) for the target analytes. The inter- and intra-day variability was <12%. The method was validated using matrix-matched calibration and recovery assays with spiked samples. Recovery rates were between 90.9 and 109.5%. The method was successfully applied for the determination of these compounds in human milk samples collected from volunteers lactating mothers with no known occupational exposure to these compounds who live in the province of Granada (Spain). The sharpsnout seabream Diplodus puntazzo is of interest in Mediterranean fish farming. Disease is an important problem because parasites can spread quickly in culture conditions and fish often develop high parasite burdens. Here we assess the risk that documented parasites pose to the sustainability of D. puntazzo farming. This study specifically considers metazoan and protist parasites recorded from wild and farmed D. puntazzo in scientific literature. Risk assessment studies involve the identification, characterization and qualitative quantification of the risk in question (parasitoses in this case) and the probability of establishment. We considered the parasite species which may be difficult to manage as a priority for research into potential management strategies. Those parasites which could be transmitted from cultures of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) were also included in this study. Four groups of parasites represented a risk to D. puntazzo farming, ranging from moderate to high: Ciliophora, Myxozoa, Monogenea and Copepoda. Three parasite species were considered high risk to D. puntazzo cultures: Amyloodinium sp., Cryptocaryon sp. and Enteromyxum leei. These species were responsible for high mortalities in cultures of these and other fish species. In addition Sparicotyle chrysophrii, Caligus ligusticus and Gnathia vorax entail a moderate risk to D. puntazzo Mediterranean farms. No important episodes have been related to caligids and isopods in Mediterranean sparids, nevertheless they should be properly managed to prevent future problems., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. An analytical method based on a sample treatment by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) followed by ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis (UHPLC-MS/MS) for the determination of 17 quinolones and 14 β-lactams (penicillins and cephalosporins) in raw cow milk, was validated according to the European Commission guidelines as cited in the Decision 2002/657/EC. The extraction efficiency of the DLLME depends on several parameters such as the nature and volumes of extractant and dispersive solvents, pH, concentration of salt, shaking time and time of centrifugation. These variables were accurately optimized using multivariate optimization strategies. A Plackett-Burman design to select the most influential parameters and a Doehlert design to obtain the optimum conditions have been applied. Two different pH values were used for the extraction of compounds (pH 3 for acidic quinolones and β-lactams and pH 8 for amphoteric quinolones). The method was validated using matrix-matched standard calibration followed by a recovery assay with spiked samples. The limits of quantification found ranged from 0.3 ng g(-1) for amoxicillin to 6.6 ng g(-1) for ciprofloxacin, and the precision was lower than 15% in all cases as is required by the European Regulation. The decision limits (CCα) ranged between 4.1 and 104.8 ng g(-1), while detection capabilities (CCβ) from 4.2 to 109.7 ng g(-1). These values were very close to the corresponding maximum residue limits (MLRs) for the studied antibiotics. Recoveries between 72 and 110% were also obtained. Finally, in order to evaluate the applicability of the method, 28 raw cow milk samples were analysed and it was observed that 28% of the samples were positive. An outbreak of human leishmaniasis was confirmed in the southwest of the province of Madrid, Spain, between July 2009 and December 2012. Incidence of Leishmania infection in dogs was unchanged in this period, prompting a search for alternative sylvatic infection reservoirs. We evaluated exposure to Leishmania in serum samples from animals in the area with an indirect immunofluorescence test (IFAT). Using promastigotes from six culture passages and a 1/25 threshold titer, we found anti-Leishmania infantum seroreactivity in 9.3% of cats (4 of 43), 45.7% of rabbits (16/35) and 74.1% of hares (63/85). Use of promastigotes from >10 in vitro passages resulted in a notably IFAT lower titer, suggesting antigenic changes during extended culture. Postmortem inspection of seropositive animals showed no clinical signs of infection. Avocado fruit is a rich source of health-related lipophilic phytochemicals such as monounsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols, carotenes, acetogenins and sterols. However, limited information is available on the contribution of specific phytochemicals to the overall antioxidant capacity (AOC) of the fruit. Centrifugal partition chromatography was used as fractionation tool, guided by an in vitro chemical assay of oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). Subsequent experiments focused on isolation and characterization of the chemical nature of the main contributors to lipophilic AOC of avocado pulp. ORAC values obtained for acetogenins were contrasted with results from an isolated kidney mitochondria membrane lipid peroxidation bioassay. The present study established that lipophilic AOC of the pulp was significantly higher than its hydrophilic AOC. Our results confirmed the presence of acetogenins in the fractions with highest lipophilic AOC, and for the first time linked them as contributors to lipophilic-ORAC values. Further HPLC-PDA/MS-TOF analysis led to structural elucidation of two novel acetogenins, not previously reported as present in avocado pulp, along with five already known related-compounds. Antioxidant properties observed for avocado pulp acetogenins by the ORAC assay suggested that, in the presence of an emulsifying agent, acetogenins could serve as novel lipophilic antioxidants in a food matrix. Results from isolated mitochondria lipid peroxidation bioassay, indicated that L-ORAC values which may have relevance for food matrix applications, should not be interpreted to have a direct relevance in health-related claims, compounds need to be evaluated considering the complexity of biological systems., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. This work presents a comparison of three extraction techniques -ultrasound-assisted extraction (USE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) - and evaluates their efficiency in the determination of quinolone antibiotics in sewage sludge samples. Extraction parameters for each technique were optimized using design of experiments, and the compounds were detected and quantified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), operating in positive electrospray ionization (ESI) mode. The use of two selected reaction monitoring transitions for each compound allowed simultaneous quantification and identification in one run. Analytes were separated in less than 10 min. Marbofloxacin and cincophen were used as surrogates for amphoteric and acid quinolones, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) were between 2 and 5 ng g(-1), and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were between 4 and 18 ng g(-1) for the various analytes. The inter- and intra-day variability was <7%. Due to the absence of certified reference materials (CRMs), the method was validated using matrix-matched calibration and a recovery assay with spiked samples. Recovery rates were between 97.9% and 104.8%. Statistical comparison demonstrated no significant differences between the three extraction techniques. The methods were successfully applied for the determination of quinolones in sewage sludge samples collected from different wastewater treatments plants (WWTPs) located in the province of Granada (Spain). Laboratory-scale batch experiments were developed to investigate the main removal routes for 6 commonly found quinolones (ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, pipemidic acid, and piromidic acid), in wastewaters from a wastewater treatment plant, at μg L(-1) levels in an aerobic sludge system from a membrane bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant. It was demonstrated that sorption and biotransformation were the main removal routes for the target antibiotics over other possible pathways, as volatilization or hydrolysis, under the experimental conditions. Mass balances indicated that sorption on sludge played a dominant role in the elimination of antibiotics from waters. The sorption coefficient K(d) depended strongly on temperature and on the quinolone type and were higher at lower temperatures and for piperazinylic quinolones. K(d) values were between 516 and 3746 L kg(-1) in the temperature range of 9-38°C. Higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) increased quinolone removal efficiency mainly by sorption. Quinolone biodegradation constituted a secondary pathway, and could be described by first-order kinetics with degradation-rate constants ranging from 8.0 × 10(-4)h(-1) to 1.4 × 10(-2)h(-1) within the same temperature range and MLSS from 7000 to 15,000 mg L(-1). Biodegradation depended on the MLSS and temperature, but also on the initial chemical oxygen demand (COD). Higher biodegradation rates were observed at higher MLSS and temperature, as well as at low initial COD. Ciprofloxacin and moxifloxacin registered the highest biodegradation percentages (52.8% and 47.2%, respectively, at 38°C and 15,000 mg L(-1) MLSS), which is evidence that, despite the known persistence of this group of antibiotics and removal from waters mainly by sorption, it was possible to improve their removal by biodegradation, with an appropriate selection of conditions and control of process variables, as a preliminary step towards the elimination of these antibiotics from the environment. A selective, sensitive, robust and accurate method for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA) and its chlorinated derivatives in sewage sludge samples using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is presented. Prior to instrumental analysis, an extraction procedure using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) was carried out in order to obtain the highest recoveries and improve sensitivity. After LC separation, the MS conditions, in negative atmospheric pressurized chemical ionization (APCI) mode, were individually optimized for each analyte to obtain maximum sensitivity in the selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode. The use of two reactions for each compound allowed simultaneous quantification and identification in one run. The analytes were separated in less than 6 min. BPA-d(16) was used as internal standard. The limits of detection of the method ranged from 4 to 8 ng g(-1) and the limits of quantification from 14 to 26 ng g(-1), while inter- and intra-day variability was under 6% in all cases. Due to the absence of certified materials, the method was validated using matrix-matched calibration and a recovery assay with spiked samples. Recovery rates ranged from 97.7% to 100.6%. The method was satisfactorily applied for the determination BPA and its chlorinated derivatives in sewage sludge samples collected from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in the province of Granada (Spain). Background: The aim of the study was to analyze the mechanism of deterioration of implanted arteries., Methods: Eleven patients were included. Samples of vascular segments obtained from multiorgan donors and samples of the same vascular segments after explantation in the recipient were analyzed. Blood group, time of cold and warm ischemia, cause of death, time spent in the intensive care unit, time of storage of the cryopreserved grafts, and anatomopathological and immunohistochemical studies were analyzed using the preimplant samples obtained from the multiorgan donor. For samples obtained from the recipient, blood group, duration for which the tissue from the donor has been implanted, reason for graft explantation, and anatomopathological and immunohistochemical studies were analyzed., Results: Histopathologically, the main finding has been the substitution of the muscular cap of the arterial wall by an intense fibrosis, in most of the cases, of a symmetrical nature. Besides this degeneration of myocytes, there is marked perivascular fibrosis and fibrointimal thickening also exists. The T lymphocytes suggest the importance of the immunological mechanism in the distortion of the architecture of the arteries. The atherosclerosis plays a less relevant role., Conclusions: Evidence of immune-mediated injury was found, and this mechanism seems to be responsible for the degenerative process in cryopreserved homografts., (Copyright © 2012 Annals of Vascular Surgery Inc.
